Yes—you can play the Nintendo Switch version of It Takes Two with a friend on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo marks the game as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” You can play with two people on one console, with two nearby consoles using local wireless, or with two players online. For the online option, Nintendo requires Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. One person can own the full game while the other downloads the free Friend’s Pass.
What works on Nintendo Switch 2
The game you need is the Nintendo Switch edition of It Takes Two; Nintendo does not list a separate Switch 2 edition in the compatibility information used for this guide. Nintendo’s current product listing marks that Switch version as “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” That means Switch 2 runs the game with the behavior Nintendo specifies for the Switch release.

Nintendo’s general Switch 2 guidance says the newer console can play compatible physical and digital Switch games, while noting that some titles may be unsupported or only partly compatible. Always check the current listing for your region if you are buying a cartridge or downloading the game after a store-page change.
It Takes Two is a two-player game. Nintendo lists all three of these arrangements:
#1 Best Overall
- Fully compatible with Switch 2. Reminder: The Nintendo Switch 2 system's hardware is different from Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2
- Pure Co-Op Perfection: As Cody and May, embark on a crazy journey built purely for two in couch co-op or online through Friend's Pass
- Gleefully Disruptive Gameplay: Master unique and connected character abilities with every new level; You'll never know what you're up against next
- A Universal Tale of Relationships: Discover a metaphorical merging of gameplay and narrative in a light-hearted story of the hardships in getting along
- Help each other across an abundance of unexpected obstacles and laugh-out-loud moments; Embrace a heartfelt and hilarious story where narrative and gameplay weave into a uniquely metaphorical experience
| Play arrangement | Players | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Single system | 2 | Both people play on the same Switch 2. |
| Local wireless | 2 | Each person uses a nearby compatible console; this is not internet play. |
| Online | 2 | Players connect over the internet. Nintendo requires Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. |
The game does not become a solo title if only one person owns it. The owner can use Friend’s Pass so the other player can join without buying a second full copy.
Choose the right way to play
Both players sharing one Switch 2
Choose the single-system option when you are sitting together and want to use one console. This is the simplest arrangement because there is no second console, local-wireless connection, or internet service involved. You still need a usable controller for each player.
Two consoles in the same place
Choose local wireless when each player has a nearby compatible console and you do not want to use an internet connection. Nintendo lists local wireless for two players separately from online play. Follow the game’s current on-screen prompts to create or join the local session; Nintendo’s published listing does not provide a fixed, button-by-button menu sequence.

Choose online play when your friend is not physically nearby. Nintendo lists online play for two players and states that it requires Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. The exact invitation labels can change with game or system updates, so use the prompts shown by the current version rather than relying on an old menu guide.
What each player needs
- A Nintendo Switch 2 running the compatible Nintendo Switch version of It Takes Two.
- A second player and a controller for each participant in a single-system session.
- For local wireless, a compatible console for each player and a nearby wireless connection.
- For online play, Nintendo Accounts and Nintendo Switch Online membership as required by Nintendo.
- If only one person bought the game, the other player needs the official Friend’s Pass download.
Nintendo warns that additional accessories may be required. Controller combinations depend on the hardware you already own. Nintendo Australia’s listing gives a specific couch-co-op requirement of one pair of Joy-Con controllers per player and says a compatible controller is needed for each player. That regional notice is useful when it applies to your store region, but do not assume every controller arrangement or regional listing is identical.
Set up two-player couch co-op on one Switch 2
- Prepare the controllers. Pair or attach the controllers you intend to use, then verify that the console recognizes one controller for each player. If you are using Joy-Con, check that each player has the arrangement required by the game and your regional Nintendo instructions.
- Start the Nintendo Switch version. Launch It Takes Two from the Switch 2 HOME Menu. Confirm that you are using the purchased game, not only the Friend’s Pass, if you are the player who owns the full adventure.
- Select the single-system option. On the game’s multiplayer screen, choose the option for two players on one system. The wording can vary after updates, so follow the current labels displayed on your console.
- Have the second player join. When the game asks for another player, press the requested button on the second controller. If no prompt appears, return to the console’s controller setup and reconnect or reorder the controllers before trying again.
- Confirm both profiles or guests. Choose the player profiles the game requests, or continue as guests if that is the option shown. Do not create a second game purchase merely because the console asks for a second participant.
- Start the session. Once both players appear in the lobby or character-selection screen, continue into the game. Keep both controllers connected for the entire couch session.
If your setup does not match Nintendo Australia’s one-pair-per-player Joy-Con guidance, use another compatible controller arrangement recognized by the game. The exact accessory requirement is hardware- and region-dependent, so check the current local listing before buying anything.
Set up local wireless with two consoles
Local wireless is for two players who are physically near each other but each want to use a separate console. Nintendo lists this as a two-player mode, distinct from online multiplayer.
Rank #2
- Step into the shoes of Cody and May, a clashing couple who turn into dolls through unknown magical means. Trapped in a fantastical world where unpredictability hides around every corner, they must reluctantly learn to overcome their differences, save their fractured relationship, and find their path back home to their beloved daughter Rose
- You and a friend can play couch co-op with a pair of Joycons and a second gamepad, utilize local wireless play by connecting two Switch consoles together, or play online co-op with another Switch player using Friend’s pass
- Voice-overs in Japanese, French, German, and Spanish, as well subtitles spread even further across regions, allow more players to experience the game's unpredictable world
- Filled with genre-bending challenges and character abilities to master as you experience a metaphorical merging of gameplay and narrative to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling like never before
- Put both consoles nearby. Turn on wireless communication on each system and keep the consoles within normal local-wireless range.
- Launch the game on both consoles. Use the Nintendo Switch edition on each system. If one player owns the full game and the other does not, install Friend’s Pass on the guest console first.
- Open the multiplayer choice. Select the local-wireless option on the relevant game screen. Because Nintendo has not published a stable sequence of exact menu names for this connection, use the prompts shown by the current software.
- Join the displayed session. One player should create or host the local session if the game asks for a host; the other should choose the matching session from the available list.
- Check both players before starting. Verify that each console shows one connected player, then continue when the game enables the start command.
Do not select online play when you intend to use local wireless. The two modes have different connection requirements, and local wireless does not substitute for Nintendo Switch Online membership when you switch to internet play.
Set up online play with a friend
- Confirm service requirements. Nintendo says online play requires Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. Make sure the participating accounts meet those requirements before troubleshooting the game.
- Install the correct game access. The owner launches the full Nintendo Switch game. The other player can download Friend’s Pass instead of purchasing another full copy.
- Open the online multiplayer option. Select online play from the game’s current multiplayer screen. Nintendo’s official pages do not establish one permanent sequence of invitation-menu labels, so follow the on-screen instructions provided by your installed version.
- Send or accept the invitation. Use the friend-selection or invite flow shown in the game. If the game presents a room, code, or invitation card, share or accept it exactly as displayed rather than using instructions from an older release.
- Wait for both players to appear. Check that the owner and Friend’s Pass player are shown in the same online session before starting the adventure.
- Start the game. Continue only after the game confirms both players. If the guest is restricted to a trial level, verify that the other account is the one that owns the full game.
Membership terms and online-service conditions can change by region. Check Nintendo’s current service and store information for the country associated with your account before subscribing or diagnosing an access problem.
How Friend’s Pass works
Friend’s Pass is Nintendo’s free guest option for this game. Nintendo’s store listing describes it as: “Download Friend’s Pass to play It Takes Two with a friend – for free!” The pass is not a second full-game license.
- The friend without the full purchase downloads Friend’s Pass.
- Nintendo says the first level is free for people who download the pass.
- When a friend owns the full game, that owner can invite the pass user into the full adventure.
- The owner still needs the complete game; two Friend’s Pass downloads do not replace a full-game purchase.
- Online sessions remain subject to Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online and Nintendo Account requirements.
Use the Friend’s Pass listing for the region of the guest account, because download availability and service details can differ by country. If the pass user sees only the opening level, check that the inviting player is running the purchased game and that the invitation was made from that owner’s session.

One console, two players
The game requires a compatible controller per player. A single detached Joy-Con may or may not fit the arrangement you intend, depending on the game’s current prompt and your regional hardware guidance. Nintendo Australia specifically describes one pair of Joy-Con controllers per player for couch co-op. Treat that as a regional requirement rather than a universal statement about every market.
Two consoles
Each player controls the game from the controller assigned to that player’s console. Pair controllers before entering the multiplayer screen so the game can identify both participants without interrupting the connection setup.
When the second player is not detected
- Open the Switch 2 controller settings and verify that both controllers are connected.
- Disconnect unused controllers that could be assigned to the wrong player.
- Return to the game’s multiplayer screen and repeat the join prompt.
- If using Joy-Con, try the physical arrangement shown by the game rather than assuming every orientation is supported.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game will not start on Switch 2
Check that you installed the Nintendo Switch edition and that the console has the latest available system and game updates. Nintendo’s compatibility label confirms support for this version, but Nintendo also warns generally that not every Switch title is fully compatible with Switch 2. If your store page shows a different compatibility notice, follow that regional notice.
Rank #3
- Experience the classic run and gun action with a pal in 2-player local co-op
- Includes the “Delicious Last Course” expansion filled with new bosses and brand-new character Ms. Chalice
- Includes exclusive “Cuphead Funnies” comic collector cards & vintage-inspired “Cuphead Club Membership”, and a hand-drawn reversible coversheet
The guest cannot enter the full game
Confirm that one account in the session owns the complete game and that the other account installed Friend’s Pass. The pass provides the first level free; access to the full adventure depends on joining the owner’s session. Recreate the invitation from the owner’s game if the guest launched the pass independently and remains in its trial state.

Verify the Nintendo Account sign-in and the Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement first. If those are correct, close and reopen the game, then repeat the current in-game invite flow. Avoid substituting local wireless instructions for online setup.
Local wireless does not find the other console
Confirm that both players selected local wireless, not online, and that both consoles are nearby with wireless communication enabled. Restart the multiplayer search on both systems and follow the session prompts shown by the game. Nintendo’s listing confirms the mode and player count but does not publish a universal menu path to troubleshoot every software version.
The game asks for another controller
Connect a compatible controller for the second player and check the regional accessory guidance. Nintendo warns that additional accessories may be required; the exact need depends on whether you are sharing one console and which Joy-Con or other controllers you have.
What Nintendo’s listings do—and do not—promise
Nintendo’s information establishes compatibility, two-player support, local wireless, online play, Friend’s Pass conditions, and the online-service requirement. It does not establish cross-platform play with other consoles, a particular matchmaking system, or permanent names for every invitation menu. Do not assume that a friend on a different platform can join a Switch 2 session, and do not rely on an old guide’s button sequence if the current game presents different prompts.
Fast decision checklist
- Same room, one console: choose single-system play and prepare one compatible controller per player.
- Same room, two consoles: choose local wireless on both systems.
- Different locations: choose online play, use Nintendo Accounts, and meet Nintendo Switch Online requirements.
- Only one full-game purchase: have the other player install Friend’s Pass; the owner must host access to the full adventure.
- Unsure about accessories: check the current regional listing, especially the controller notice for couch co-op.
With the compatible Nintendo Switch version installed, the correct multiplayer mode selected, and the required controller or service setup in place, two people can play It Takes Two together on Nintendo Switch 2 without buying a second full copy for the Friend’s Pass guest.
