To connect an iPhone to a soundbar, use Bluetooth if the soundbar supports Bluetooth audio, or AirPlay if it supports AirPlay. For Bluetooth, put the soundbar in pairing mode, then choose it in Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone. For AirPlay, connect both devices to the same network, start playback, open Control Center, tap AirPlay in the media controls, and select the soundbar. A wired connection may work with a compatible HDMI adapter and audio route, but it depends on the iPhone connector and the inputs in your soundbar or TV setup.
Choose the connection method your soundbar supports
Check the soundbar’s manual or specifications for Bluetooth audio or AirPlay support. The exact steps and available inputs vary by model; a soundbar that lacks Bluetooth or AirPlay cannot use that wireless method.

Connect your iPhone to a soundbar with Bluetooth
- Set the soundbar to Bluetooth input. Use the soundbar’s controls or remote to select Bluetooth, then activate pairing or discovery mode. The button sequence differs by model, so consult its manual if needed.
- Open Bluetooth settings on iPhone. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Select the soundbar. Tap its name when it appears in the list of available devices. If a passcode is requested, use the instructions for that soundbar rather than guessing.
- Route audio to the soundbar. Start music, a podcast, or other audio. If it continues playing through the iPhone, use the playback destination control on the Lock Screen or in Control Center and select the soundbar.

Connect with AirPlay
- Check compatibility. Confirm that the exact soundbar model supports AirPlay. For example, Samsung’s HW-Q910C specification sheet lists AirPlay 2 support and an iOS 11.4-or-later requirement; this example does not establish support for other soundbars.
- Put both devices on the same network. Connect the iPhone and soundbar to the same network.
- Start audio on the iPhone. Open the app or content you want to play.
- Choose the soundbar as the destination. Open Control Center, tap AirPlay in the media playback controls, and select the soundbar. A supported app may also offer an AirPlay control.
Apple’s AirPlay instructions describe streaming from iPhone and the same-network requirement: Use AirPlay to stream audio. The model-specific details for the example above are in Samsung’s HW-Q910C specification sheet.

Can you connect an iPhone to a soundbar with a cable?
Sometimes, but there is no universal iPhone-to-soundbar cable setup. Apple’s Digital AV adapter guidance says the adapter must match the iPhone’s connector, which may be USB-C or Lightning on supported devices. Apple identifies an HDMI Digital AV adapter as the relevant adapter type when audio is needed; VGA does not carry audio.
Before buying or connecting an adapter, check the manual for the iPhone, soundbar, and any TV or receiver in the chain. Confirm that the HDMI inputs and audio routing support the path you intend to use. Apple’s adapter guidance is at Get Help with Apple Digital AV Adapters.

Troubleshoot a soundbar that does not appear or play audio
Bluetooth soundbar is missing from the iPhone list
- Verify the soundbar is on Bluetooth input and actively discoverable; selecting Bluetooth input alone may not start pairing mode.
- Make sure Bluetooth is on at Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone.
- If the soundbar was paired previously, select it as the playback destination rather than waiting for it to appear as a new accessory.
- Follow the soundbar manual if it asks for a passcode or uses a model-specific pairing procedure.
Apple’s Bluetooth guidance says an accessory must be discoverable to appear, and recommends checking the accessory’s instructions. AirPlay soundbar does not appear
- Check that the exact soundbar model supports AirPlay.
- Confirm the iPhone and soundbar are connected to the same network.
- Reopen the AirPlay destination list from Control Center or the supported app.
The iPhone is connected, but audio still comes from the phone
For Bluetooth, open the playback destination control on the Lock Screen or in Control Center and select the soundbar. For AirPlay, choose the soundbar from the AirPlay list in Control Center or the app you are using.

Which option should you use?
Use Bluetooth when the soundbar supports it and you want a direct wireless pairing. Choose AirPlay when the soundbar supports AirPlay and both devices can join the same network. Consider HDMI only after confirming the adapter matches the iPhone connector and the soundbar or connected TV can route audio from that input. The soundbar’s manual is the best source for its pairing controls, supported features, and input behavior.
