Yes. Hello Kitty Island Adventure supports online play for two players on Nintendo Switch. Each player needs internet access and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. The game’s multiplayer connection is created from its in-game Phone: the host opens the Multiplayer application and shares a temporary session code, while the other player selects Join Friend and enters that code.

Nintendo lists one local player and one to two online players for the Switch version. The detailed code procedure comes from the game’s community wiki, so menu names and unlock requirements should be checked against your current game update if they differ.

What multiplayer supports on Nintendo Switch

The Switch edition has two different ways to play with other people:

Mode Players Connection Membership requirement
Local play 1 player On one Nintendo Switch Not listed as an online mode
Online play 1–2 players Internet connection through the game Paid Nintendo Switch Online membership required

The “1–2 online players” figure is Nintendo’s eShop product specification for the Switch version. It means one host and one visiting player, not a larger online group. If you want to play with a friend, plan for two separate players using the game’s online session flow rather than trying to add a second local player to the same console.

  • Team Up in Multiplayer: Everything is better with friends. Invite other players to your island and complete multiplayer challenges to boost each other’s stamina, solve the island’s trickiest puzzles, chase new high scores, or build beautiful vacation homes together. Multiplayer guests can even decorate their own Friendship Cabins on your island.

Nintendo’s general Switch guidance also matters here: multiplayer invitations and joining normally happen inside the game. The HOME Menu can provide a place to accept an invitation that you have received, but it is not a replacement for the game’s own session-code process.

Check these requirements first

Each player needs Nintendo Switch Online

Online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for the players using the online mode. Both players should also have a working internet connection and access to the Nintendo Switch version of Hello Kitty Island Adventure. A membership on only the host’s account does not satisfy the requirement for the visiting player.

Membership is a service requirement, not a substitute for owning or accessing the game. Make sure the account that launches the online session and the account that joins it can both use Nintendo Switch Online. If a console has several profiles, check the profile selected in the game rather than assuming another profile’s membership will apply.

Use matching game updates

The community wiki’s multiplayer guidance says both players should be on the same game update. If one console has downloaded a newer patch, update the other copy before trying to connect. The exact update number can change, so use the version shown by your consoles rather than relying on an old number in a guide.

Updating first also removes a common source of misleading errors. A code can be entered correctly and still fail if the two game clients are on different versions. Finish any pending update, restart the game if necessary, and then create a fresh code.

Confirm the multiplayer unlock

The community wiki says multiplayer functionality is unlocked by completing the “Small Gift Big Smile” quest and starting “Friends From Afar.” These quest names and the unlock sequence are community-reported rather than confirmed in a Nintendo support article. If Multiplayer is missing from the Phone, check your active and completed quests in the game and verify that your current version still uses those names.

The unlock is tied to game progress, so a new save may not show every multiplayer command immediately. The host should use a save where the Phone and its applications are available. The visiting player should also progress far enough to access the Phone and Multiplayer menus rather than relying on the host’s unlocked state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the platform pairing

The same community guidance recommends matching the platform and update version. A Switch player should therefore first try to connect with another player using the same Switch generation and game version. Reports that Switch 1 and Switch 2 cannot play together are not confirmed by a primary Nintendo source in the available documentation; treat that claim as unverified and check the current game information if you are attempting a cross-generation session.

How to host an online session

The host creates the session and gives the other player the code. Use this sequence from inside your save:

  1. Launch the game and load your island. Do not begin from the Switch HOME Menu invitation screen; the session is created from the game.
  2. Open the in-game Phone. Find the Phone interface used for the game’s applications.
  3. Select the Multiplayer application. The community wiki identifies this application as the place to create or join an online session.
  4. Display the session code. The host receives a code on the Multiplayer screen. Read or send that code to the friend through whatever private communication method you normally use.
  5. Leave the Multiplayer screen open while the friend connects. The wiki warns that codes are temporary and may change when the Multiplayer application is reopened. Reopening it can invalidate the code you already shared, so do not close and reopen the application while the other player is entering it.

The code is a session credential, not a permanent friend code. If the friend reports that it no longer works, return to the host’s Multiplayer screen, confirm the displayed code, and send the current one again. Avoid copying a code from an earlier attempt after the application has been reopened.

Share the code privately rather than posting it publicly. Anyone who has a valid current code may be able to attempt the join flow, and the code is intended for the friend you are coordinating with. Once the visitor is connected, keep both players in the game until the session is finished instead of repeatedly reopening Multiplayer.

How the other player joins

  1. Start the game on the visiting player’s Switch. The visitor should use the same game version and compatible platform setup as the host.
  2. Open the in-game Phone.
  3. Choose Multiplayer.
  4. Select Join Friend. This is the menu identified by the community wiki for entering another player’s session code.
  5. Enter the host’s current code. Type the code exactly as displayed, including any characters that can be easy to confuse. Submit it while the host keeps the Multiplayer screen open.

After the code is accepted, the game handles the connection. If the joining screen rejects the code, do not assume the membership or save is defective immediately: first ask the host to check whether the Multiplayer application was reopened and whether a new code is now displayed.

If the host sends a replacement code, discard the old one and enter only the newest code. Both players should remain in the game while coordinating, because leaving the relevant screen or reopening the application can make an earlier code unusable.

Using a Nintendo Switch invitation

Nintendo distinguishes between accepting an invitation and sending one. If you receive a Switch invitation, Nintendo says you can accept it from the HOME Menu by opening your profile and selecting Online Play Invites. Follow the invitation’s prompt to return to the game.

That HOME Menu path applies to an invitation that has already been received. Nintendo also states that you cannot send an invitation to a specific person on your Friend List through the Nintendo Switch User Page menu. In other words, do not look for a “invite this friend” command in the profile page and expect it to create the game session.

“It is not possible to invite specific people on your Friend List to join a multiplayer game through the Nintendo Switch User Page menu.”

Nintendo Support

For Hello Kitty Island Adventure, use the game’s Multiplayer application to create and join the session. If a Nintendo invitation is available, accept it through HOME Menu profile → Online Play Invites, then follow the game’s own instructions.

Think of the two systems as separate paths. The in-game code is the practical way to create the session and identify the friend joining it. The HOME Menu is only where Nintendo lets you accept an invitation that has already been sent through a supported game flow.

Local play versus online play

The eShop specifications can prevent a common misunderstanding about “multiplayer.” Nintendo lists one local player but one to two online players. That means the Switch listing does not describe two people sharing one console in local co-op. The supported two-person mode is online, with each player connecting from a separate system and using the required online service.

Question Answer for the Switch version
Can two people play online together? Yes, for one to two online players.
Can two people play locally on one Switch? Nintendo lists one local player.
Is Nintendo Switch Online required for online play? Yes, a paid membership is required.
Where is the join command? Phone → Multiplayer → Join Friend, according to the community wiki.
Where does the host find the code? Phone → Multiplayer, according to the community wiki.

There is no larger party option in the listed Switch specification: the online range tops out at two players. If several friends want to participate, they would need to take turns or organize separate two-player sessions rather than expecting a four-player lobby.

Cost and time-sensitive Nintendo offers

The unavoidable online-play cost is a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for each player using the service. Nintendo’s listing does not establish a single universal price in the game specification, so check the membership options shown for your account’s region before purchasing.

Nintendo Canada announced a limited Game Trial for Nintendo Switch Online members from October 9, 2026, at 10 a.m. PT through October 15, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. PT, along with a 45% digital discount through October 18, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. PT. Troubleshooting connection and menu problems

The Multiplayer application is missing

Check the reported quest unlock first. The community wiki says to complete “Small Gift Big Smile” and start “Friends From Afar.” Because this is secondary, update-sensitive guidance, compare the quest names and requirements with what your current game displays. Also confirm that you are playing the Switch version and have loaded a save far enough for the Phone applications to be available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not troubleshoot the code itself until the Multiplayer application appears. A visitor cannot use Join Friend from the HOME Menu, and an invitation in your Friend List does not unlock the game’s in-game menu.

The code is rejected or has expired

  • Ask the host to look at the Multiplayer screen again; reopening the application can generate a different temporary code.
  • Have the host keep that screen open while you enter the code.
  • Enter the newest code rather than one copied from an earlier attempt.
  • Check that both copies of the game are on the same update.
  • Confirm that both players still have internet access and an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Retype the code carefully before changing accounts or saves. The code is temporary, so a failure immediately after reopening Multiplayer is more likely to indicate a stale code than a permanent account problem.

The friend cannot find Join Friend

Both players must open the game’s Phone and then select Multiplayer. Join Friend is an in-game command, not a Nintendo HOME Menu profile option. If the application is present but the command is unavailable, check whether the visiting save has completed the game’s multiplayer unlock requirements.

The game connects one way but not the other

Compare the two consoles’ game versions and platform generations. The community wiki recommends matching both. A Switch 1/Switch 2 incompatibility has been reported by the community, but it is not established by the primary Nintendo material available here, so do not treat that report as a definitive rule. If your setup crosses generations, verify current compatibility information for the game before changing accounts or memberships.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Nintendo invitation does not appear

Only a received invitation can be accepted from the HOME Menu profile’s Online Play Invites section. The absence of an invitation does not mean the game lacks online play. Return to the in-game Phone → Multiplayer flow and have the host share the session code instead. Nintendo’s support guidance specifically rules out sending a targeted Friend List invitation through the User Page menu.

One player lacks online access

Online sessions require internet access and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for the players using the service. Check the membership status on the account that is attempting to join, not only on the account that created the session. If the requirement is not met, the code workflow cannot substitute for the membership.

The host and visitor keep missing each other

Coordinate the timing: the host should open Multiplayer, send the code, and remain on that screen while the visitor opens Phone → Multiplayer → Join Friend. If either player pauses to reopen the application, assume the code may have changed and start with the newly displayed code.

A reliable first-session checklist

Use this checklist before troubleshooting more complicated causes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Both players are using Hello Kitty Island Adventure on Nintendo Switch.
  • Both consoles have internet access.
  • Both players have a current paid Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • The game has been updated on both consoles.
  • The host has unlocked multiplayer in the save; the community wiki identifies “Small Gift Big Smile” and “Friends From Afar” as the relevant early quests.
  • The host opens Phone → Multiplayer and shares the code currently on screen.
  • The host leaves that screen open until the visitor finishes entering the code.
  • The visitor opens Phone → Multiplayer → Join Friend and enters the current code.
  • If an invitation was received separately, it is accepted from HOME Menu profile → Online Play Invites.

This sequence keeps the two connection systems separate: the game’s temporary code creates the session, while the HOME Menu path only handles a Nintendo invitation that already exists.

What is confirmed and what remains version-sensitive

Nintendo’s Switch eShop information establishes the platform, the one-player local specification, the one-to-two-player online specification, and the paid Nintendo Switch Online requirement. Nintendo Support establishes the HOME Menu location for accepting received online-play invitations and explains why a targeted Friend List invitation cannot be sent from the User Page.

The menu-by-menu code flow, the quest names used to unlock multiplayer, the temporary nature of the code, and the same-update recommendation come from the game’s community wiki. Those details can change with a game update, so use the labels visible in your current copy if they differ. The reported Switch 1/Switch 2 incompatibility has not been confirmed by a primary Nintendo source here; present it as a compatibility issue to verify, not as a guaranteed limitation.

Bottom line for playing with a friend

For two-player online play, each person needs the Switch game, internet access, and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. After multiplayer is unlocked, the host uses Phone → Multiplayer to display a temporary code. The friend uses Phone → Multiplayer → Join Friend and enters that code before it changes. Use the HOME Menu’s Online Play Invites only to accept an invitation you have received; the game’s own multiplayer screen is the dependable place to create the session.
