Play Halo 4’s campaign first, then play Spartan Ops if you want the complete Halo 4 story. After that, you can start Halo: New Covenant, but Halo 4 is not a required prerequisite: New Covenant is a community campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST, not an official sequel to Halo 4. Its Workshop description places it after Halo 3.
The answer in one minute
There are two different questions hidden in the title. For the official Halo storyline, Halo 4 follows Halo 3. Within Halo 4, the recommended order is the main campaign followed by Spartan Ops. Xbox Wire describes Spartan Ops as episodic story content that continues directly from the end of the campaign.
Halo: New Covenant is a separate, fan-made project. Its Steam Workshop listing describes it as a campaign mod for Halo 3: ODST and sets it after Halo 3. It is not the official game that follows Halo 4, and its listing does not make Halo 4 a requirement. You may play Halo 4 first for additional Halo context, but you do not need to finish it to understand the mod’s stated setup.
What Halo 4 adds to the series
Microsoft’s November 5, 2012 launch announcement places Halo 4 nearly five years after the events of Halo 3. Master Chief and Cortana enter a mysterious new world and encounter an ancient threat. The game begins the Reclaimer Saga, so it introduces characters, conflicts and terminology that become important to later official Halo stories.

That position makes Halo 4 useful background even when you are primarily interested in a fan project. It shows the status of Chief and Cortana after the original trilogy and establishes the direction of the post-Halo 3 setting. It does not, however, turn every later community project into a direct Halo 4 sequel.
Where New Covenant fits
The Steam Workshop project titled Halo New Covenant is described as a community campaign mod built for Halo 3: ODST. The project’s own stated setting is after Halo 3. That makes it different from an official numbered installment and different from Halo 4’s Reclaimer Saga continuation.
Official game or fan project?
Do not use the title alone to infer release order. Microsoft’s official Halo announcements and Xbox Wire coverage identify the numbered games and their expansions; the Workshop page identifies New Covenant as a community modification. In October 2025, Xbox Wire also discussed Halo: Campaign Evolved, an officially announced remake project. That project is separate from the Workshop mod and should not be treated as the same game.

Do you need Halo 4 first?
No. If your goal is simply to start New Covenant, the mod’s stated starting point is after Halo 3, and the available project description does not specify Halo 4 as a prerequisite. Play Halo 4 first only if you want to follow the broader post-trilogy era or experience Halo 4’s own story before trying an unrelated community campaign.

Multiplayer, Forge and other sandbox modes are not needed to understand either the Halo 4 campaign or the mod’s premise. Treat them as optional activities rather than story chapters.
Timeline in plain language
The simplest chronology is Halo 3, then a gap of almost five years, then Halo 4. Microsoft’s launch description specifically follows Master Chief and Cortana into a new world during that later period. The numbered sequel therefore belongs to the official post-trilogy continuity, while New Covenant uses an earlier point in the timeline: after Halo 3 and within the setting of Halo 3: ODST.
That distinction explains why two apparently conflicting play orders can both be sensible. A player following Microsoft’s mainline chronology should go from Halo 3 to Halo 4. A player following the Workshop project’s own premise can go from Halo 3 directly to New Covenant. The mod’s placement does not move simply because you decide to play Halo 4 first.
How to play Halo 4 in the right order
1. Choose an access route
The most straightforward current route is Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), which includes Halo 4. Xbox Wire’s November 17, 2020 announcement documented PC availability through Xbox Game Pass for PC, the Microsoft Store and Steam, and described MCC optimization for Xbox Series X|S. Those were the options and terms reported at that time; storefront availability, pricing and subscription requirements can change, so confirm the listing you intend to use before buying or subscribing.
A second route is the original Xbox 360 release. A physical disc can still be relevant if you specifically want the 360 version, but used-copy condition and availability vary. The 360 version’s online-service limitations are materially different from MCC’s.

2. Start the main campaign
- Launch MCC or the Xbox 360 version of Halo 4.
- Open the campaign menu and select the main Halo 4 campaign, not Spartan Ops.
- Choose a difficulty appropriate for your group. Difficulty changes combat challenge, not the story order.
- Play the missions in the game’s listed sequence. Avoid jumping into Spartan Ops between campaign missions if you want the intended narrative progression.
- Finish the campaign before moving to Spartan Ops. The campaign’s ending is the handoff point for the episodic content.
3. Decide whether to play cooperatively
Halo 4’s campaign can be enjoyed alone or with other players, depending on the edition and platform features available to you. Cooperative play does not change the mission order. On legacy 360 hardware, local split-screen and LAN options remain among the features identified by Halo Support after the 2022 service reduction; service-dependent online functions may behave differently.
4. Move to Spartan Ops
After the campaign, open the Spartan Ops section from the Halo 4 menu. Xbox Wire characterizes these missions as weekly, episodic, cooperative story content that picks up where the main campaign concludes. Playing them after the campaign preserves that direct continuation.

What Spartan Ops is—and what it is not
An episodic continuation
Spartan Ops uses separate mission episodes rather than adding those missions into the main campaign list. The episodes expand the post-campaign setting and are designed for cooperative play, although the precise way you play depends on your platform and available services.
Not a prerequisite for New Covenant
Because New Covenant is described as an ODST mod set after Halo 3, there is no established requirement to complete Spartan Ops before launching it. Completing Spartan Ops is a completeness choice for Halo 4, not a documented installation or story dependency for the Workshop project.
Cost and purchase considerations
There is no stable price that applies to every reader. MCC pricing, Game Pass terms, store editions and regional discounts change, so check the live Steam, Microsoft Store or Xbox listing when you are ready to buy. A subscription may provide access while active, whereas a purchase gives you the listed edition under that storefront’s terms.

A disc can provide the campaign even when legacy online features have been reduced, but it does not convert the 360 service environment into MCC’s modern service stack. If your priority is campaign-only play on existing 360 hardware, the disc may be sufficient; if you want current collection support or PC mod access, evaluate MCC instead.
Starting the New Covenant mod safely
Use the project’s current Steam Workshop page as the authority for installation instructions, supported game build and required files. The available project description establishes its format and setting, but it does not establish a universal, permanent set of compatibility steps. Workshop projects can change as creators update files or as the host game changes.
- Open the current Workshop listing for Halo New Covenant.
- Read the author’s stated prerequisites, supported version and installation notes before subscribing or downloading anything.
- Confirm that your copy of the required Halo 3: ODST host game is installed and updated as the project specifies.
- Install or subscribe using the method documented on that page; do not rely on an old video or an archived file path.
- Launch the host game and verify that the mod appears in the location the author documents.
- If it does not appear, stop and compare your game version, enabled content and file location with the current project instructions before deleting or replacing files.
Do not assume that Halo 4 files, Halo 4 campaign completion or Spartan Ops unlocks are needed for the mod. If the Workshop author later adds a dependency, follow that current project-specific instruction rather than an assumed series order.

- Identify the exact host game named by the creator: the project is described as an Halo 3: ODST campaign mod.
- Check whether the page names a particular edition, build or platform.
- Read update notes for changed prerequisites before launching an older save.

What the 2022 Xbox 360 change means
Halo Support states that Xbox 360 Halo servers were turned off or reduced on January 13, 2022. The campaign and Spartan Ops remain available, along with features such as custom games, Forge, split-screen and LAN identified in the support notice. Features that depend on the retired services are affected, so an original 360 copy should not be treated as having the same online behavior as MCC.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking New Covenant for an official sequel
The name sounds like a numbered Halo follow-up, but the Workshop listing identifies a community mod for ODST. Keep official series chronology and fan-project chronology in separate notes when planning your playthrough.
Starting Spartan Ops before the campaign
Spartan Ops is the episodic continuation. Starting it first can expose you to post-campaign context prematurely. Finish the main campaign, then open Spartan Ops.
Assuming Halo 4 is required for the mod

Context-first route without unnecessary detours
- Play Halo 3.
- Play the Halo 4 campaign.
- Skip Spartan Ops if you only want the main arc, or complete it if you want every Halo 4 story episode.
