There is no single Gundam game timeline. Gundam is a multiverse: Universal Century (UC), SEED, Wing, 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans and other universes each have their own continuity, while crossover games intentionally combine them. Use release order to follow how modern games arrived, or use story order inside one universe. For a broad introduction, start with SD GUNDAM BATTLE ALLIANCE; for custom mobile-suit building, start with GUNDAM BREAKER 4. Do not place either game into a single UC chronology.
What order should I play Gundam games?
Choose the order that matches what you want from the franchise:
- A tour of many eras: play SD GUNDAM BATTLE ALLIANCE.
- Custom Gunpla construction: play GUNDAM BREAKER 4.
- One anime universe: select a game tied to that universe and follow the animation or timeline for that continuity.
- Competitive fighting: use the currently available MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM EXTREME VS. product in your region, treating it as competitive content rather than a story sequence.
- Strategy across several series: choose the specific SD GUNDAM G GENERATION edition and verify which eras it includes.
The release list below is a practical modern starting path, not a complete history of every Japanese-only, arcade, mobile or legacy title. The story guide then explains how to place games without mixing separate universes.

| GUNDAM BREAKER 4 | 29 August 2024 | Custom-Gunpla action game | Builds original mobile suits rather than following one anime chronology | Co-op and creation sharing are part of the game’s loop |
| MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED BATTLE DESTINY REMASTERED | 22 May 2025 | SEED-focused action title | Belongs to the SEED continuity, not UC | Availability and features depend on the edition and region |
| SD GUNDAM G GENERATION ETERNAL | Current or announced catalog entry; date varies by release information | Strategy RPG | Multi-series collection; included eras depend on the edition | Check the specific release listing for current services |
| MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM EXTREME VS. | Current catalog entry; regional release information applies | Competitive fighting/action | Roster-based crossover rather than one chronological campaign | Platform and network availability must be checked locally |
| GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT | Announced/current project with activity documented around 2026 | Format and final release details depend on the project’s launch information | Do not assign it a fixed story position until its continuity is stated | Check current regional information before purchasing or planning co-op |
Dates in the first three rows are the dates listed by Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe. The later entries are part of the official Gundam game catalog, but an announced or currently listed project should not be treated as a confirmed worldwide launch at every platform or storefront.

1. SD GUNDAM BATTLE ALLIANCE (2022)
This is the best release-order starting point when you want recognizable moments from several Gundam eras in one campaign. Its premise is a distorted G: Universe: the official description says, “The story takes place in G: Universe, a world where Gundam canon twists and turns in ways no one can predict.” That premise is the reason it can place mobile suits and scenes from different works together without claiming that they share one canonical timeline.
Bandai Namco describes it as an action RPG in which SD mobile suits fight through those distortions. The launch description recreates pivotal moments from Mobile Suit Gundam through Iron-Blooded Orphans, and the campaign supports a three-player team. Play it as a guided sampler: it can show you which series you want to explore next, but it does not replace watching or reading the individual continuities.
2. GUNDAM BREAKER 4 (2024)
GUNDAM BREAKER 4 follows the “Break, Build, and Battle” loop. You assemble a custom Gunpla, upgrade its parts and use the resulting machine in battles rather than moving through a fixed anime chronology. Co-op and creation sharing make it suitable when the appeal is experimentation with a build, not reconstructing a canonical plot.

Other platform, language and regional listings can differ, so confirm the storefront for your country before buying. The game is a later release than Battle Alliance, but that date does not make its custom story a sequel to the earlier game.
3. MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED BATTLE DESTINY REMASTERED (2025)
The remastered title belongs in the SEED lane. Its 22 May 2025 listing makes it a useful current release-order entry, but its placement in release order must not be mistaken for a place after UC games. If you are following SEED, use the relevant SEED animation and timeline as your spine, then place this game where its own edition identifies the events.

4. Current and announced catalog
SD GUNDAM G GENERATION ETERNAL, MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM EXTREME VS. and GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT represent the continuing catalog. Their presence in a catalog is not enough to establish one worldwide date, one platform list or one narrative position. The RG Project documents activity around GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT and related media during 2026, so check the current regional listing when you are ready to play.
Do Gundam games follow one timeline?
No. Gundam games use three broad structures:
- Single-universe adaptations or side stories: a game tied to UC, SEED, Wing, 00 or another universe can be placed against that universe’s own events.
- Original or custom scenarios: the game uses Gundam designs but creates missions, characters or battles that are not a direct retelling of one anime.
- Crossover collections: several eras appear together. These are intentionally outside a single chronological lane.
The title, roster or release date does not by itself establish canon. Look for the game’s stated universe, the year it names, and whether it describes itself as a retelling, side story, simulation or crossover.
How to play Universal Century games in story order
Universal Century is the most useful continuity for a timeline-based route, but the safe method is to use the dated UC history as the spine rather than guessing from a game’s launch year.
- Begin with the original Mobile Suit Gundam era. This establishes the initial UC conflict and the mobile suits that later games revisit.
- Continue with direct UC sequels and films. Follow the events named by the official UC history, not the order in which their games were released.
- Identify a side-story game’s stated UC year. A game that names a particular year belongs around that point in the UC chronology, even if it launched decades later.
- Place the side story after you know its year and scope. If its missions overlap the events of a main work, treat it as a parallel account rather than inserting it between scenes you have not verified.
- Keep crossover games separate. SD GUNDAM BATTLE ALLIANCE can include UC material, but its G: Universe distortions mix eras and prevent a strict UC placement.
The official Gundam history document is the appropriate reference for dated UC events. A game’s packaging or mission list may summarize the era, but it cannot override the continuity label supplied for that title.
What “story order” means for UC games
Story order can mean either the chronological year of the events or the order in which a player should experience the source narrative. Those are not always identical. A side-story game may be set during the original era but assume that you already recognize its characters. If your priority is comprehension, play the principal UC work first and then return to the side story; if your priority is calendar chronology, place the side story by its stated UC year.

How to order SEED, Wing, 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans and other universes
Each alternate universe is its own lane. Follow the relevant animation, film, manga or official timeline, then place a game according to the events it says it depicts.

Keep MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED BATTLE DESTINY REMASTERED with SEED material. Do not place it after a UC game merely because the remaster released in 2025. If an edition specifies that it covers a particular SEED series or period, finish the corresponding source material first when you want the character and political context.
Wing and 00
Use the Wing or 00 story sequence independently. A roster appearance in a crossover does not move a Wing or 00 event into UC, and a later game release does not make one universe a sequel to another.
Iron-Blooded Orphans
The official Battle Alliance description names stories through Iron-Blooded Orphans. That makes the game useful for sampling the series, but the crossover structure still prevents it from being a chronological Iron-Blooded Orphans entry. For a continuity-first route, use the series’ own narrative order and treat the crossover as optional.
G, X and newer universes
Apply the same rule to G, X and newer settings: identify the universe, find the work’s stated point in that universe, and ignore unrelated release dates. If no position is stated, describe the game as an original or crossover scenario rather than inventing one.

Which Gundam game should I play first?
| Your priority | First choice | Why it fits | What it is not |
|---|---|---|---|
| See many eras in one campaign | SD GUNDAM BATTLE ALLIANCE | Action RPG, distorted G: Universe premise, scenes spanning Mobile Suit Gundam through Iron-Blooded Orphans, and three-player campaign support | A single-universe canon chronology |
| Build and share custom mobile suits | GUNDAM BREAKER 4 | Part assembly, upgrades, battles, co-op and creation sharing | A retelling of one anime timeline |
| Follow SEED specifically | MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM SEED BATTLE DESTINY REMASTERED | It stays in the SEED continuity and is the current remastered entry listed for 22 May 2025 | A UC sequel |
| Play strategy across series | The relevant SD GUNDAM G GENERATION edition | Strategy-RPG structure that collects multiple series | Automatically complete coverage of every Gundam era |
| Compete with a broad roster | The available MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM EXTREME VS. product in your region | Competitive fighting/action focus | A story-order campaign |
Can I play Gundam games in story order?
Yes, but only after choosing one continuity. Use this checklist before starting a game:
- Does the title name UC, SEED, Wing, 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans or another universe?
- Does its description give a year or event that can be placed on that universe’s timeline?
- Is it a retelling, a side story, an original scenario or a crossover?
- Does the edition include multiple series, making a single chronological placement impossible?
- Are you following calendar chronology, or the order that best explains the characters and setting?
If the answers point to a single universe and a dated event, place the game on that universe’s timeline. If the answers point to a collection or distortion, play it as a separate sampler. This approach avoids the most common error: treating a crossover roster as evidence that all of its series share one canon.

Platform availability is title- and region-specific. The official store listing confirms a physical Nintendo Switch edition of GUNDAM BREAKER 4; it does not establish that every other title in this guide is available on Switch, PlayStation, PC or another platform. The same caution applies to language support and network features.
Before purchasing, check the local product page for:
- Supported platform and whether the listing is physical, digital or both.
- Available interface, subtitle and voice languages.
- Whether online play requires a platform subscription or account.
- Regional release date, server status and cross-play rules.
- Whether downloadable content or a remaster is sold separately.
For co-op, Battle Alliance officially supports a three-player team. GUNDAM BREAKER 4 includes co-op and creation sharing in its described loop. For Extreme VS., network and platform availability must be verified for the specific product in your region rather than assumed from the franchise name.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using release date as story date
A 2025 remaster can depict events from an earlier fictional period. Release order tells you when you could buy the game; story order tells you where its events sit inside a named universe. Keep those lists separate.
Putting every title into UC
SEED, Wing, 00, Iron-Blooded Orphans, G, X and other universes are not UC chapters. Label each game by continuity before arranging it.
Forcing a crossover into one timeline
Battle Alliance explicitly relies on a world where Gundam canon twists and turns. Its mixed-era missions are the feature, not a chronology problem to solve.
Assuming a collection includes every era
SD GUNDAM G GENERATION editions differ in included series. Check the edition’s roster and campaign scope before calling it complete.
Confusing competitive content with narrative content
Extreme VS. is best understood as competitive fighting/action content. A character or mobile suit appearing on its roster does not establish a playable story sequence.
A practical two-track route
If you are new to Gundam and want both context and chronology, use two tracks rather than forcing one list:
- Start with SD GUNDAM BATTLE ALLIANCE to sample multiple eras and identify the universes that interest you.
- Choose one universe, such as UC or SEED, and follow its official story sequence through the principal animation or other source works.
- Return to games tied to that universe, placing side stories by their stated fictional year.
- Use GUNDAM BREAKER 4 when you want a creative break from canon and a custom-build-focused campaign.
- Use SD GUNDAM G GENERATION for a strategy-RPG tour, confirming the edition’s included eras.
- Choose Extreme VS. when competition and roster variety matter more than plot.
This route preserves the distinction between a game’s play style and its continuity. You can enjoy a crossover immediately without treating it as a spoiler-free replacement for any individual series.
