The most reliable way to run the classic PC edition of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on Windows 10 or 11 is to start with a clean, legitimate installation, keep the game’s frame limiter enabled, and add three focused compatibility tools: SilentPatch for modern-system fixes, GInput for XInput controllers, and GTAVC.WidescreenFix for correct widescreen rendering. Rockstar’s official 1.1 patch is optional and should be used only for the specific graphics-corruption problem it addresses; it is not a general widescreen or gamepad upgrade.
What this setup changes
Vice City’s original Windows release predates widescreen monitors, high-refresh displays, DirectPlay changes, and today’s Xbox-compatible USB controllers. The game can still run well, but an unmodified installation may show stretched or incorrectly aligned HUD elements, a misplaced crosshair, missing controller features, crashes, video-memory errors, or physics that behave incorrectly at high frame rates.
Each recommended component has a separate job:
- SilentPatch: modern compatibility and crash fixes for the classic PC build, including fixes related to DirectPlay, video-memory detection, high-refresh-rate behavior, HUD scaling and other long-standing issues. Silent’s Blog lists Build 12.1, updated August 15, 2026.
- GInput: translates modern XInput pads into console-style Vice City controls, adds vibration that the original PC release did not provide, offers multiple layouts and switches automatically between keyboard/mouse and controller input.
- GTAVC.WidescreenFix: corrects widescreen presentation, including HUD and crosshair/bullet-impact alignment.
- Frame Limiter: an in-game setting that should remain enabled because the old engine can develop car-physics, gravity and sound problems when it runs at high FPS.
This guide targets the classic PC version, not a separately maintained modern remaster. Files and behavior can differ between editions, so install these components only in the version for which their documentation is written.

Use a legitimate classic PC copy
Install or verify a legitimate copy of the original Windows release. Avoid mixing files from different editions or copying a modded executable into a different release; version mismatches are a common reason for crashes and missing features.

Back up the game and saves
- Close the game and its launcher.
- Copy the complete game directory to a backup location. This preserves the original executable and gives you a clean rollback point.
- Back up the Vice City save-data folder separately. Keep the backup outside the game directory so an uninstall or file verification cannot remove it.
Know the historical requirements
The 2002–2003 manual lists 1.55 GB of free disk space and a 64 MB DirectX 9.0-compatible video card, plus a USB or joystick-port gamepad as an optional control device. Those figures describe the original release and are historical requirements, not useful minimums for a current Windows computer. A modern PC normally exceeds them; compatibility with the old engine and its files is the practical concern.
Install the fixes in the right order
1. Apply Rockstar’s 1.1 patch only when its problem matches yours
Rockstar’s current patch page describes version 1.1 as an unsupported graphics-corruption fix for certain video-card and PC combinations. Rockstar also states that “This is the only change that has been made from your original version of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.” Apply it only when you are seeing that documented corruption or when the release’s instructions specifically require it. The patch changes GTA-VC.EXE to version 1.1; it does not add widescreen support, XInput mappings, vibration or general Windows 10/11 modernization.
2. Add SilentPatch
Download the classic-PC build described in Silent’s documentation. Put SilentPatch’s files, including its DirectDraw component, in the main Vice City directory—the folder that contains GTA-VC.EXE, not a subfolder such as models or data. Build 12.1 is listed as updated August 15, 2026.

SilentPatch addresses compatibility issues that are otherwise difficult to diagnose: crashes, the old DirectPlay dependency, incorrect video-memory handling, high-refresh-rate behavior and HUD scaling. It does not remove the old engine’s high-FPS limitations, so do not treat a high refresh rate as a reason to disable the frame limiter.
3. Add GInput for an Xbox-compatible or other XInput pad
Place the GInput files in the same main directory as the executable. GInput replaces the original DirectInput path with XInput handling, supplies console-style mappings and vibration, supports multiple control layouts, and can switch between keyboard/mouse and pad input automatically. Its release documentation dates the project to September 29, 2019.
Connect the controller before launching the game and confirm that Windows sees it as an XInput device. If a controller only exposes a legacy DirectInput mode, GInput cannot identify it as an XInput pad without an appropriate compatibility layer from the controller manufacturer.

4. Add GTAVC.WidescreenFix
Copy the widescreen package’s listed files into the main game directory:
d3d8.dllglobal.iniGTAVC.WidescreenFix.asiGTAVC.WidescreenFix.ini
The fix makes widescreen the default and corrects the unmodified game’s crosshair and bullet-impact alignment, as well as widescreen HUD behavior. Do not put these files in the Windows system directory or in a nested mod folder; the loader must find them beside the game executable.
5. Launch and configure the game
- Start Vice City from the executable or shortcut you normally use.
- Open the display options and select the monitor’s native resolution if it is offered correctly.
- Confirm that the image fills the screen without stretched menus or a displaced crosshair.
- Open the controller settings and test steering, camera movement, aiming, confirm/cancel and vibration.
- Leave Frame Limiter enabled. Save, quit and relaunch once to verify that the settings persist.

You can combine the official 1.1 patch with the mod-assisted setup when its narrow graphics-corruption case applies. Installing it solely because it is newer will not provide any of the features supplied by SilentPatch, GInput or the widescreen fix.
Set up widescreen without introducing new display problems
Select a supported resolution
Use the resolution that matches the monitor’s aspect ratio when the game lists it. A 16:9 display should not be forced into a 4:3 mode unless you are diagnosing a problem. If the game reports only a few old resolutions, first verify that SilentPatch and the widescreen files are in the directory containing GTA-VC.EXE.
Check the HUD and aiming reticle
Do not judge success only by whether the 3D world fills the screen. Open a mission or free-roam area and check the radar, health/armor display, subtitles and crosshair. The unmodified widescreen mode can leave the crosshair visually separated from the point where bullets land; GTAVC.WidescreenFix is intended to correct that relationship.
Keep the frame limiter on after every test
Disabling the limiter can make a display appear smoother, but the old engine may then run vehicle physics, gravity and sound incorrectly. If you temporarily turn it off while diagnosing a slowdown, restore it before normal play and before comparing controller behavior.

Make an Xbox controller work
Connect the pad as XInput
Use a wired or wireless USB/XInput gamepad for PC and confirm in Windows’ controller settings that it is detected. Start the game only after the pad is connected. GInput’s purpose is to replace Vice City’s DirectInput handling with XInput, so the device must expose an XInput interface.
Verify the in-game actions
- Move the left stick and confirm walking and vehicle steering respond proportionally.
- Test the right stick or camera controls, then aim and fire.
- Check menu navigation, confirm/cancel and the pause button.
- Trigger an event that normally produces vibration and verify that feedback is present.
- Move the mouse or press a keyboard key and confirm that automatic input switching does not lock the game to the wrong device.
If controls are present but arranged incorrectly, review GInput’s available control layouts rather than changing unrelated display settings. If no controls respond, recheck that GInput is beside GTA-VC.EXE and that Windows identifies the pad as XInput.
Troubleshoot slow performance, crashes and bad settings
Start with sound and video drivers
Rockstar’s support guidance says that old sound and video drivers were the main cause found during its testing. Update both drivers from the hardware manufacturers before changing several game options at once. Reboot after installation, then test Vice City with the frame limiter enabled.

Use the low-load diagnostic settings
If the game is still slow or unstable, Rockstar lists these temporary diagnostic changes:
- Lower the draw distance.
- Temporarily disable the frame limiter only to determine whether the symptom changes; re-enable it for play.
- Turn off subtitles and widescreen.
- Test at 640×480 with 16-bit color.
- Set audio hardware to automatic detection.
- Disable Dynamic Acoustic Modelling.
These settings are diagnostic fallbacks, not a recommendation to play permanently at a low resolution. Re-enable features one at a time after the fault is identified so you know which setting caused the change.
Reset cached configuration after hardware changes
When a graphics or audio-card change leaves Vice City using a wrong resolution or failing during startup, remove the documented cached files as applicable: TXD.DIR, TXD.IMG, CAPS.DAT and GTA_VC.SET. Back up any file before deleting it. The game recreates required settings or cache data on the next launch; you may need to select the resolution and controls again.

Separate a mod problem from a game problem
- Quit the game and restore the clean-folder backup.
- Launch the untouched copy with the frame limiter enabled.
- Add SilentPatch and test startup and basic play.
- Add GInput and test the controller.
- Add GTAVC.WidescreenFix and test resolution, HUD and crosshair alignment.
This order identifies the component that introduced a failure without requiring you to guess. Keep only one copy of each file in the directory; duplicate DLLs or ASI files from older attempts can load an unintended version.

What to expect from the finished installation
A correctly configured classic installation should start at the selected widescreen resolution, keep the HUD and crosshair aligned, accept an XInput controller with console-style mappings and vibration, and remain playable with the frame limiter enabled. SilentPatch improves compatibility but does not turn Vice City’s engine into a modern uncapped game. The official 1.1 executable remains optional and problem-specific.
Keep the backup, record which files you added, and change one variable at a time when troubleshooting. That makes it possible to return to the clean release or identify whether a display, controller or compatibility component is responsible for a new symptom.
