You can play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on a Windows PC, PlayStation 5 or 4, Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One, and supported Android or iOS devices. The current console and PC collection is Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which bundles San Andreas with GTA III and Vice City. On PC, decide first between that edition and the older standalone Windows release; their installation, account, and control guidance are different. On mobile, use the current app-store listing for your exact phone, operating-system version, region, and app build, and treat controller support as device-dependent.
Choose the San Andreas release before you install
There are two materially different PC setup paths. The original Windows release is documented by a legacy PC manual. The Definitive Edition is a separate product with its own PC requirements page and online-account conditions. Instructions for one should not be copied blindly to the other.
| Release | What you get | Platforms Rockstar lists | Setup and controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Windows release | Standalone Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas | Windows PC documentation in the original PC manual | Use the legacy manual and the settings in that edition. The supplied material does not establish the Definitive Edition’s account or network requirements for this release. |
| Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, GTA III, and Vice City | PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, including the Rockstar Games Launcher | Rockstar describes modernized GTA V-style controls and targeting. On PC, installation and online play require a Rockstar Games account and an internet connection for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. |
The trilogy is sold as a three-game collection, so check the exact product listing before paying. Platform availability and storefront routes can change by country and device. Confirm the edition name, included games, and supported platform in the live store listing for your region.
How to play GTA: San Andreas on PC
1. Pick the edition that matches your goal
Choose the original Windows release if you specifically need the legacy PC edition and its older manual. Choose the Definitive Edition if you want the currently listed PC collection and its updated control and targeting design. Do not assume that an old installation guide, save-game procedure, or control map applies to both.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
2. Verify the PC listing and requirements
For the Definitive Edition, open Rockstar’s current PC system-requirements page and compare your computer with both the minimum and recommended specifications before downloading. The requirements page is the authority for the edition you are buying; do not substitute requirements copied from a forum or from the original game’s manual.
- Confirm that the listing says Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition if that is the version you intend to install.
- Compare the operating-system, processor, memory, graphics, storage, and other requirements shown on Rockstar’s page with your PC.
- Leave enough storage for the launcher and the installed collection, not just the individual San Andreas executable.
- If your computer only meets the minimum specification, expect to use the in-game graphics options conservatively; the published minimum is a compatibility threshold, not a promise of a particular frame rate.
3. Install the Definitive Edition with its account and network conditions in mind
Rockstar states that the Definitive Edition requires a Rockstar Games account and an internet connection for activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification. Have the account credentials ready, sign in to the required launcher or store, and keep the computer online during activation. Periodic verification means that an installation that worked previously can still need a connection later when the entitlement is checked.
Those conditions come from the Definitive Edition requirements page. They should not automatically be imposed on the older standalone Windows release, whose surfaced manual is a separate document.

Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
4. Start the game and select San Andreas
After the trilogy finishes installing, launch it from the store or launcher used for your purchase and choose San Andreas from the collection. If you installed the original release, start its own executable or shortcut instead. The title screen and menus identify which edition is running; verify that before changing controls or troubleshooting.
5. Set keyboard, mouse, or gamepad controls
The original PC manual contains legacy installation and control information. The Definitive Edition uses the modernized control and targeting approach that Rockstar describes as GTA V-style. Open the game’s controls or settings menu, review every action, and test movement, camera, vehicle controls, aiming, and menu navigation before beginning a long session.
- A keyboard and mouse can be configured through the PC controls menu.
- A compatible gamepad can be selected and tested in the same menu when the game and operating system recognize it.
- Use the prompts shown by your installed edition. A control tutorial or chart made for another edition can show different actions.
Common PC problems
- Activation fails: confirm that you are signed in to the Rockstar Games account associated with the purchase and that the PC is online. The Definitive Edition’s periodic verification requirement can also explain a later entitlement error.
- The game will not launch: recheck that the store listing, launcher, and installed files all belong to the same edition. A legacy manual cannot repair a Definitive Edition installation, and vice versa.
- The controller is ignored: connect it before launching, verify that the operating system sees it, then open the in-game control settings and select the detected device. If prompts remain wrong, follow the prompts for the current edition rather than copying a console layout.
- Controls feel unfamiliar: reset the control profile in settings and remap only after identifying whether you are running the original release or the Definitive Edition.

Install and launch
- Open the PlayStation store on your console or its official web storefront.
- Search for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
- Check the platform label (PS5 or PS4), the included-games description, and the edition name.
- Complete the purchase or download through the store, then install the collection.
- Launch the trilogy and choose San Andreas from its game-selection screen.
Use the correct button prompts
Rockstar says the Definitive Edition has modernized controls and targeting. Button prompts can differ by PlayStation generation, edition, language, and control setting. Follow the prompts displayed on your console and review the in-game controls menu instead of applying a button chart from Xbox, PC, or the original release.

Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One availability
The trilogy is listed for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. Select the store listing that names the Xbox generation you own, confirm that San Andreas is one of the included games, and check the live regional listing before purchasing.
Install and launch
- Open Microsoft Store on the Xbox console.
- Search for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
- Verify the Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S platform label and the three-game contents.
- Install the collection from the listing associated with your account.
- Open the trilogy and select San Andreas.
Controller and prompts
The Definitive Edition’s modernized targeting does not make PlayStation and Xbox buttons interchangeable. Read the on-screen prompts for your Xbox controller and adjust the control settings inside the game. If a guide shows a different button, first check whether it describes another console generation or the original release.

How to play GTA: San Andreas on mobile
Find the current Android or iOS listing
Rockstar maintains mobile update notes for Android and iOS versions. Search the official app store on your phone, open the current San Andreas listing, and check the supported device, operating-system version, region, and purchase eligibility shown there. Mobile availability is not a single universal specification: the app build and the phone’s software both matter.
iOS support threshold dated August 18, 2026
Rockstar’s support information dated August 18, 2026, says iOS 17 or higher is required for its titles to continue receiving updates and support. That is a support and update threshold, not proof that every older device immediately stops running an already-installed copy. If your iPhone or iPad is below iOS 17, check the app’s current compatibility notice and understand that future updates or support may not be available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install and update safely
- Update the phone to the newest operating-system version it officially supports.
- Open the device’s official app store and locate the current San Andreas listing.
- Read the compatibility and region information shown for your exact device.
- Install or update the app, then launch it once while connected to a reliable network so the store and game can complete their checks.
- Open the game’s control settings and test touch, camera, driving, and aiming before starting a mission.
Do not treat a historical mobile launch price or an old compatibility announcement as a current offer. Current price, stock, and purchasing routes must come from the live store listing for your region.

Can you use a controller on mobile?
Sometimes. Rockstar’s mobile controller guidance discusses USB devices and controllers supported by the phone, including PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 controllers when the particular phone-and-game combination supports them. That is general, historical guidance rather than a guarantee for every current San Andreas app build or every modern controller.
- Check whether your phone’s operating system recognizes the controller before opening the game.
- Use the current San Andreas app notes and the controller manufacturer’s device documentation to confirm compatibility.
- Connect the controller, launch the game, and look for a controller or input option in the game’s settings.
- If the game still shows touch controls, disconnect and reconnect the device, restart the app, and test again; some combinations may not expose controller input.
- Keep a touch-control fallback available because support can change with the phone, operating-system version, and app build.
Which platform and edition should you choose?
| Your situation | Most practical path | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|
| You own a Windows PC and want the currently listed collection | Definitive Edition on PC | Rockstar’s current minimum and recommended requirements, Rockstar Games account, and internet connection for activation and periodic verification |
| You specifically need the legacy Windows release | Original PC edition | That the product is the original Windows release and that its manual and control instructions match the installation |
| You own a PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4 | Definitive Edition trilogy for the matching PlayStation generation | Platform label, regional listing, included games, and the in-game control prompts |
| You own an Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One | Definitive Edition trilogy for the matching Xbox generation | Platform label, regional listing, included games, and controller prompts |
| You want to play on a phone or tablet | Current Android or iOS San Andreas app listing | Exact device, operating system, region, app-build compatibility, and any current support notes |
| You prefer physical buttons on mobile | Use a controller only after compatibility is confirmed | Phone support, game-build support, connection method, and whether the game exposes controller settings |
No source establishes one edition or input method as universally superior. Choose according to the device you already own, whether you want the three-game collection, the control style you prefer, and the requirements your hardware can meet.
Controls: keyboard, gamepad, console pad, or touch
Keyboard and mouse
Keyboard and mouse are available choices on PC, but the exact bindings depend on the edition. The original manual documents the legacy layout; the Definitive Edition has its own modernized control and targeting design. Open the controls menu, test each critical action, and save your profile after remapping.
Gamepads on PC and consoles
A compatible gamepad can be used on PC when the operating system and the installed edition detect it. PlayStation and Xbox consoles use their respective on-screen prompts. Do not infer that a button labeled on one platform performs the same action on another.
Touch controls on mobile
Touch controls are the fallback when no compatible controller is available. Use the app’s settings to adjust or review the touch layout, then test camera movement, acceleration, braking, aiming, and menu selection. A controller that pairs with the phone is not automatically supported by the game.
A reliable troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the edition: read the title shown in the store, launcher, or main menu. Decide whether it is the original Windows release or the Definitive Edition.
- Confirm the platform: check PS5 versus PS4, Xbox Series X|S versus Xbox One, Windows, Android, or iOS. A platform-specific listing is more reliable than a third-party compatibility claim.
- Recheck requirements: on PC, compare the Definitive Edition with Rockstar’s current requirements page. On mobile, compare the exact phone and operating-system version with the current app listing.
- Check entitlement and connectivity: for the Definitive Edition on PC, sign in to the required Rockstar Games account and connect to the internet for activation or periodic verification.
- Reset input: reconnect the controller or keyboard, restart the game, and open the edition’s own control settings. Use the prompts displayed by that installation.
- Update from the official channel: install the current store or launcher update available for your device. On iOS, remember that Rockstar’s August 18, 2026 support threshold is iOS 17 for continued updates and support.
- Escalate with precise details: when contacting support, include the edition, platform generation, operating-system version, controller model or connection type, and the exact error text.
What to verify before buying
- The product title and whether San Andreas is standalone or part of the Definitive Edition trilogy.
- The exact platform generation: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PC.
- For PC Definitive Edition, the current minimum and recommended requirements and the Rockstar account and internet conditions.
- For mobile, the current app listing’s device, operating-system, region, and purchase-eligibility information.
- Whether your preferred controller is recognized by both the phone or computer and the installed game build.
- That the regional store listing still offers the edition you intend to buy; prices, stock, and routes can change.
Bottom line
For a current multi-platform purchase, start with Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition and select the listing that matches your PC, PlayStation, or Xbox generation; San Andreas is included with GTA III and Vice City. On PC, check the separate Definitive Edition requirements and prepare for Rockstar account and internet verification. On mobile, compatibility is specific to the current app build, device, operating system, and region, while controller support must be confirmed rather than assumed. The original Windows release follows its own legacy manual and should be configured as a separate product.
