The most reliable way to play GTA Online with selected friends is to create an Invite Only Session from Story Mode, then invite your friends after the private session loads. If PC players appear offline, Rockstar’s documented fixes are to set Presence Visibility to Everyone, retry the invitation, and—when both players are in the same Crew—use Join Crew Members. Crews are separate from session invitations: Crew invitations are accepted from the My Crews page.
What you need to know before inviting friends
GTA Online has two different social systems that are easy to confuse:
- Session access: an invitation brings a friend into the GTA Online session you are currently playing.
- Crews: a persistent in-game group that can help friends find and join one another, especially on PC when ordinary invitations fail.
An Invite Only Session is private in terms of access: you create it, then choose who to invite. It is not the same as a solo session, and it does not make every activity available to any number of players. Freemode Events can run in private sessions, but many require a minimum number of participants. Time Trials are unavailable in private and solo sessions.
The steps below use the exact menu labels in Rockstar’s current support instructions. Rockstar’s Invite Only Session article was updated May 26, 2026. Menu wording and platform behavior can change, so a console or PC screen may not look identical to another platform.

Before you start: a short preparation checklist
- Have the host reach Story Mode before creating the private session. Rockstar’s documented flow begins there, rather than from a populated public lobby.
- Ask friends to finish loading GTA Online and remain available to accept a prompt. Someone who is still loading may not appear as joinable immediately.
- Decide whether you need a private lobby or simply want to find one another. Invite Only is the appropriate choice when you do not want unrelated players entering.
- Do not assume that PC, PlayStation, and Xbox show identical invitation screens. The detailed visibility and Crew-member workaround documented by Rockstar is specifically a PC procedure.
- If you plan to use a Crew as a fallback, make sure the relevant players belong to the same Crew before testing Join Crew Members.
There is no single menu sequence that should be treated as universal across every platform. Use the exact labels shown on your screen, but keep the distinction between a session invitation and a Crew invitation clear.
Create an Invite Only Session
Start in Story Mode rather than trying to convert an already populated public lobby. The documented route loads a new session after you confirm that you want to leave the current one.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Navigate to the Online tab and select it.
- Scroll down to Find New Session and select it.
- Select Invite Only Session.
The game prompts you to leave the current session and loads a new private session. Wait until the new session has finished loading before sending invitations. If you invite someone while a transition is still in progress, the invitation can appear delayed or fail to put the player in your session.
The host should remain in the new lobby long enough to verify that it has loaded normally. If the game returns you to a previous screen, repeat the same Story Mode sequence instead of assuming that an incomplete transition created a usable private lobby. The important point is that Invite Only Session is selected inside the Find New Session flow; it is not a separate option that must be found in the general player list.
Invite friends after the private session loads
Use the invitation controls available on your platform
Once you are inside the Invite Only Session, open the game’s online player or invitation controls and select the friends you want to bring in. The exact screens and button prompts differ between PC and consoles, so do not assume that a control shown in a PC support article has the same name or location on a console.
Have each friend accept the invitation through the platform or game prompt they receive. A player who declines, misses, or lets an invitation expire may remain outside the session even though the session itself is working normally. Send a fresh invitation after confirming that the friend is online and has finished loading GTA Online.
Invite one friend at a time when diagnosing a problem
If several people are trying to join at once, test with one friend first. A successful one-person join confirms that the session was created correctly and narrows the problem to a particular account, platform, or invitation. After that friend arrives, invite the remaining players.
For a larger group, keep track of who has accepted and who is still waiting. A private session does not automatically fill with members of your friends list or Crew. Each person must enter through an invitation or an available join route, and every person’s loading state can be different.

Do not confuse a session invitation with a Crew invitation
A session invitation is a request to enter the current lobby. A Crew invitation adds a player to a Crew; it does not automatically place that player in your current session. If your goal is to join a Crew, use the Crew acceptance steps below. If your goal is to play immediately, send a session invitation after the private lobby has loaded.
PC fix when friends appear offline or invitations fail
Rockstar’s PC support instructions address a specific symptom: both players are using GTA Online, but each sees the other as Offline and neither can invite the other. Follow the fixes in this order.
1. Set Presence Visibility to Everyone
- Open the Rockstar Games menu.
- Open Game Settings.
- Set Presence Visibility to Everyone.
- Return to GTA Online and try the invitation again.
This setting controls whether your account is visible for presence and joining features. Both players should check the setting, not only the person sending the invitation. After changing it, give the game a moment to refresh the account status, then retry rather than immediately switching to several different join methods.

2. Try Join Crew Members
If the ordinary invitation still does not work, use Pause Menu > Online > Join Crew Members. Rockstar’s condition for this route is explicit: you and your friend must be in the same Crew. If one player is not a member of that Crew, this particular join option will not solve the problem.
This route is a useful diagnostic as well as a workaround. If it succeeds, the private session and the players’ online status are usable, while the original friend invitation was the part that failed. If it is unavailable, check Crew membership before concluding that the session itself is broken.
3. Join from the Crew member list
Rockstar documents another PC route:
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Online.
- Open Crews.
- Select My Crews.
- Choose View Members.
- Select the friend’s name.
- Choose Join Game.
This is a join request through the Crew member list rather than a conventional friend invitation. If Join Game is unavailable, verify that both accounts are in the same Crew and that the friend is actually in GTA Online rather than only signed in to the account service. The member-list route is especially useful when the normal friends display is reporting stale or incorrect Offline status.
Join or accept a Crew invitation
Accept an invitation from My Crews
To accept a Crew invitation, open the My Crews page and review the pending invitation. New invitations also appear in the Activity counter on the Rockstar Games account. Accepting the Crew invitation establishes membership; it does not replace the separate step of joining a friend’s current session.

Use a Crew for recurring groups
A Crew is useful when the same people play together regularly. Once everyone belongs to the same Crew, the PC troubleshooting route Join Crew Members becomes available. Crews can also connect members beyond the account’s direct friends list, which matters for large communities.
For a recurring group, settle Crew membership before a play session begins. That prevents a failed invitation from turning into an on-the-spot account-management task. Crew membership remains a group relationship; it does not remove the need to create or join the desired session each time you play.
Understand the 250-friend figure
Rockstar’s account help page lists a maximum of 250 friends at a time on Rockstar Games. That is an account friend-list limit, not the number of players allowed in a GTA Online lobby. Do not use the 250 figure to estimate session capacity.

That makes a Crew practical for a large community, but it still does not promise that every member can occupy one session simultaneously or that a particular activity will start with any number of players.
Private session, public session, or solo session?
The central choice is how much control you want over session access. An Invite Only Session is entered through the Story Mode menu sequence above and lets the host decide which friends receive invitations. A broader session can expose you to players you did not invite, while a solo session is not a substitute for a group lobby when friends need to participate.
Private does not mean every feature is enabled. Rockstar’s activity guidance specifically separates private-session Freemode Events from Time Trials, and individual events may impose their own participant minimum. Choose the session type around the activity you want to run, not only around who you want to see in the lobby.
What you can do in a private session
Freemode Events
Freemode Events are available in private sessions. However, Rockstar states that many individual events require a minimum number of participants before they can begin. A private lobby can therefore be working correctly while a particular event remains unavailable because too few eligible players are present.
When an event does not start, count the players who actually joined rather than the people who were invited. An invitation that is still pending does not satisfy an event’s participation requirement. The exact minimum depends on the event, so do not treat one successful event as proof that every other Freemode Event uses the same threshold.

Time Trials
Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions. If a friend is looking for a Time Trial marker and cannot start it in your Invite Only Session, moving to a session type that supports the activity is required; changing invitations or Crew settings will not make a Time Trial start in a private or solo lobby.
Why a private session may still feel empty
Invite Only means that you control who enters; it does not automatically populate the session with friends. Each friend must accept an invitation or use an available join route. Event rules then determine whether the activity can start with the players who actually joined.
That distinction explains two common false diagnoses: an empty lobby does not necessarily mean the session failed, and a disabled event does not necessarily mean the invitations failed. First verify who is inside the lobby, then compare the activity with its session and participant rules.

Rockstar’s May 7, 2024 title-update notes say that voice chat now defaults to off on console platforms. Console players who want in-game voice communication should check:
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Voice Chat.
- Set Voice Chat Enabled to on.
The cited update note does not establish the current default for PC, so do not assume that PC uses the same default. A headset with a microphone is an optional way to make voice chat easier, but Rockstar’s setting documentation does not require a particular accessory.
Each console player should check the setting on their own account. Turning voice chat on for the host does not establish that every invited player has enabled it, and voice chat is separate from the session and Crew systems.
Game access and accessory notes
If you are shopping for access, “Grand Theft Auto V PS5” is a useful platform-specific search phrase, but confirm the platform, edition, territory, and current listing before purchasing. These instructions do not establish a universal retail edition requirement, and they should not be read as a reason to buy another copy when you already have access to GTA Online on your platform.

Troubleshooting by symptom
“I cannot find Invite Only Session.”
- Return to Story Mode and use Pause Menu > Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session.
- Make sure you selected Find New Session first; Invite Only Session is an option within that flow.
- Allow the game to leave the existing session and finish loading the new one.
“My friend is online, but appears Offline on PC.”
- Both players should set Presence Visibility to Everyone under the Rockstar Games menu’s Game Settings.
- Retry the invitation after changing the setting.
- If the problem continues, use Join Crew Members, provided both players are in the same Crew.
- Alternatively, use Pause Menu > Online > Crews > My Crews > View Members, select the friend, and choose Join Game.
“The Crew invitation never appeared.”
- Open the My Crews page directly.
- Check the Activity counter on the Rockstar Games account for a new invitation.
- Do not look only at the GTA Online session-invitation screen; Crew invitations are handled separately.
“We joined, but a Freemode Event will not start.”
- Confirm that the activity is a Freemode Event rather than a Time Trial.
- Check whether the specific event requires more participants.
- Count only players who have actually entered the session, not pending invitees.
- Remember that Time Trials are excluded from private and solo sessions.
“We need to talk, but nobody can hear anyone on console.”
- Open Pause Menu > Settings > Voice Chat.
- Turn on Voice Chat Enabled.
- Check each player’s setting individually, because console voice chat defaults off according to Rockstar’s update notes.
“The Crew join option is missing.”
- Confirm that both players are members of the same Crew; Rockstar makes that a condition for Join Crew Members.
- Check the friend’s entry under My Crews > View Members.
- Remember that Crew membership and session access are separate. After joining the Crew, use Join Game or a normal session invitation.
A reliable play-together routine
- Have everyone finish loading into GTA Online and confirm the intended friends are available.
- The host returns to Story Mode and creates an Invite Only Session through Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session.
- The host waits for the private session to finish loading.
- The host invites one friend and confirms that the friend arrives.
- Invite the remaining players.
- If a PC friend appears offline, set Presence Visibility to Everyone for both accounts and retry.
- If ordinary PC invitations still fail, confirm shared Crew membership and use Join Crew Members or the My Crews > View Members > Join Game route.
- Before launching a Freemode Event, check its player requirement; do not expect a Time Trial to run in this private session.
- For console voice coordination, enable Voice Chat Enabled under the Voice Chat settings.
This order separates session creation, joining, activity selection, and voice coordination. That makes it easier to identify the failing step instead of repeatedly recreating the lobby without changing the relevant setting.

What these instructions do not establish
These steps do not establish universal cross-platform play, identical invitation menus on every console and PC configuration, current regional game availability, or a specific retail edition requirement. They also do not establish a lobby capacity from the 250-friend account limit. Those details can vary by platform, account, territory, and later game updates. Use the menu labels shown in your own game and check current Rockstar support guidance if a label or behavior has changed.

Why does my friend appear Offline on GTA Online PC?
