The practical answer: on a current system, buy Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. It includes Grand Theft Auto III with Vice City and San Andreas, and is sold for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC. On PC, the supported storefronts are Steam and the Rockstar Games Launcher; on consoles, use the platform’s digital store, with a physical Switch edition also announced.

The Definitive Edition is the straightforward modern route: it adds updated controls, higher-resolution textures, revised lighting and environments, and longer draw distances. If you specifically want the 2002-era PC release, treat that as a separate historical version whose current standalone availability depends on region and storefront rather than assuming it is still sold everywhere.

Where you can play GTA III today

Rockstar’s current product listing places GTA III inside Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. The collection, rather than a newly listed standalone GTA III product, is the normal purchase for modern hardware.

Platform How to get GTA III Important details
Windows PC Buy the trilogy through Steam or the Rockstar Games Launcher. Steam publishes specific 64-bit Windows 10 hardware requirements, requires a Rockstar Games Social Club account and broadband internet, and marks the game compatible with Steam Deck.
PlayStation 5 Purchase the trilogy in the PlayStation Store. Rockstar lists PS5 support and documents up to 4K resolution at 60 FPS.
PlayStation 4 Purchase the trilogy in the PlayStation Store. Rockstar lists PS4 support; the package still contains all three games.
Xbox Series X|S Purchase the trilogy in the Microsoft Store. A physical Xbox edition was announced, with availability depending on territory and stock. Rockstar documents up to 4K at 60 FPS on Xbox Series X. The listing covers both Series X and Series S, but the cited feature description is specifically for Series X.
Xbox One Purchase the trilogy in the Microsoft Store or look for the announced physical Xbox edition where sold. GTA III is included in the three-game bundle.
Nintendo Switch Buy the digital version from Nintendo eShop or seek the announced physical Switch release. The Switch cartridge is the clearest current physical-console option, but it is a trilogy cartridge, not a GTA III-only release.

Store prices, stock, subscription access, patches and account policies can change by country. Before paying, select your country in the relevant store and confirm that the listing is the trilogy bundle and that it supports your exact console model.

What you are buying

GTA III is packaged with two other games

The current product is a collection of three complete games: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. You do not need to purchase the games separately to play GTA III through this release, and the modern listings described here do not establish a separately sold Definitive Edition of GTA III alone.

This matters when comparing prices or storage: a purchase advertised as “GTA III Definitive Edition” may be shorthand for the trilogy listing, while the entitlement you receive is for the full collection.

Definitive Edition versus the original PC release

The original PC version is a 2002-era release. Steam Support records its historical PC release date as May 21, 2002. The modern collection is a different build with presentation and control changes. Current first-party information establishes the modern trilogy listings, but not a universally available standalone digital listing for the original version in every region. If historical fidelity is your priority, check the exact edition name, publisher and release date shown by your local storefront before buying.

Use the minimum column as a compatibility floor, not a promise of a particular frame rate or image quality. The recommended column gives more headroom for the game’s higher-resolution assets and settings, but Steam does not attach a guaranteed performance figure to it.

Install through Steam

  1. Open the Steam client and search for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
  2. Open the listing and read the edition name carefully. GTA III is one component of the trilogy.
  3. Check the system requirements against your 64-bit Windows 10 PC, including 8 GB of RAM minimum, the listed processor and graphics card, and at least 5 GB of free storage.
  4. Buy the collection, then select it in your Steam Library and choose Install.
  5. Allow Steam to download the game files. Keep broadband internet available for installation and entitlement checks.
  6. When Steam launches the game or requests authentication, sign in to or create the required third-party Rockstar Games Social Club account.
  7. Start the trilogy from Steam and select GTA III from the collection’s game menu.

Steam lists the game as compatible with Steam Deck. Compatibility is a storefront designation; it does not change the account, entitlement or internet requirements shown for the PC release.

Install through the Rockstar Games Launcher

  1. Install and open the Rockstar Games Launcher on your Windows PC.
  2. Sign in with your Rockstar account, or create one when prompted.
  3. Find Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition in the launcher’s library or store area.
  4. Complete the purchase or redeem an existing entitlement, then choose the installation location.
  5. Confirm that the drive has at least the published 5 GB of available space and begin the download.
  6. After installation, launch the collection and choose GTA III.

The Steam route still invokes Rockstar account authentication, while the Rockstar Games Launcher route uses that account directly. In either case, keep the account credentials available and expect an internet connection during installation or entitlement verification.

Prepare the PC before installing

  • Install 64-bit Windows 10 updates and current graphics drivers supplied for your Nvidia or AMD GPU.
  • Close applications that consume large amounts of memory or disk bandwidth while the game downloads.
  • Verify that the target drive has more than the stated 5 GB free so the installer and temporary download files have room to work.
  • Use the same Rockstar account that owns the entitlement. A Steam account and a Rockstar account are separate identities.
  • If you intend to use a Steam Deck, install through Steam so the entitlement appears in the Steam library.

Playing on PlayStation

PS5

  1. Open PlayStation Store on the PS5.
  2. Search for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
  3. Confirm that the listing includes GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas and that the platform is PS5.
  4. Purchase and download the collection, then start it from the Games home screen.
  5. Choose GTA III from the collection’s title selection screen.

Rockstar documents support for up to 4K resolution at 60 FPS on PS5. “Up to” describes the platform feature target; the actual output can vary with the display, selected mode and in-game conditions.

PS4

  1. Open PlayStation Store on the PS4.
  2. Locate the trilogy listing and check the PS4 platform designation.
  3. Complete the purchase and download, or use the physical PlayStation edition where it is sold.
  4. Launch the collection and select GTA III.

Rockstar lists PS4 as a supported platform. The cited 4K/60 FPS feature statement is for PS5, so do not transfer that figure to PS4.

Playing on Xbox

Xbox Series X and Series S

  1. Open Microsoft Store on the console.
  2. Search for the full trilogy title rather than a standalone GTA III listing.
  3. Check that the product supports Xbox Series X|S, then buy and install it.
  4. Start the collection from My games & apps and select GTA III.

Rockstar’s platform list includes both Xbox Series X|S. Its feature description documents up to 4K at 60 FPS for Xbox Series X specifically; that wording should not be read as a specification for Series S.

Xbox One

  1. Open Microsoft Store on the Xbox One.
  2. Find the trilogy and verify Xbox One support.
  3. Purchase and install the collection, then launch GTA III from its title menu.

A physical Xbox release was announced, but stock and regional packaging are not fixed. Check the box or store listing for the supported Xbox generation before buying.

Playing on Nintendo Switch

Digital installation

  1. Open Nintendo eShop on the Switch.
  2. Search for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
  3. Confirm that the listing is for Nintendo Switch and contains GTA III.
  4. Buy the collection and download it to internal storage or a compatible microSD card with enough free space.
  5. Launch the collection and choose GTA III.

Physical cartridge

Rockstar announced a physical Switch edition. This is the most direct modern option for someone who wants a cartridge, but the cartridge represents the three-game collection rather than a standalone GTA III product. Physical availability, packaging and any required downloads can differ by territory, so read the local product description and cartridge packaging before purchase.

What the Definitive Edition changes

Rockstar describes the collection as the original trilogy “updated for a new generation,” with “brilliant new lighting and environmental upgrades, with high-resolution textures, increased draw distances, and much more.” In practical terms, the version differs from the 2002 PC release in several visible and control-related ways.

  • Modern controls: the collection uses a control approach modeled on later GTA games, reducing the friction of playing with a current controller or keyboard-and-mouse setup.
  • Lighting and environments: Rockstar highlights revised lighting and environmental upgrades rather than simply presenting the original assets unchanged.
  • Higher-resolution textures: surfaces and characters are presented with updated texture assets.
  • Longer draw distances: more of the game world can remain visible at once compared with the original presentation.
  • Platform-specific output: Rockstar documents up to 4K/60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X, while the PC version offers hardware-dependent settings and NVIDIA DLSS support.

These improvements make the Definitive Edition the convenient choice for a current console, Steam library or Steam Deck. They also mean it is not a pixel-for-pixel replacement for the 2002 PC build. Choose based on whether modern installation and controls or historical presentation matters more to you.

Choosing the best platform

Common installation and access problems

The store shows the wrong product

Search for the complete collection title and inspect the included games. If a page says only “GTA III” without identifying the trilogy or the Definitive Edition, verify the publisher, platform and edition before paying. Modern availability is centered on the bundle.

Your PC is below the listed requirement

Compare the machine with Steam’s minimum table, not just the game’s name. The minimum is 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5-6600K or AMD FX-6300 class processor, a GTX 760 2 GB or Radeon R9 280 3 GB class GPU, 5 GB free storage, DirectX-compatible sound and broadband internet. If your computer falls short, the storefront specification does not establish reliable playability; upgrading or using a supported console is the safer decision.

The game asks for another account

Steam identifies a third-party Rockstar Games Social Club account as required. Sign in with the Rockstar account that owns or is linked to the entitlement. Creating a second account can leave the game unavailable on the identity that made the purchase.

Installation stops or entitlement cannot be verified

  • Confirm that broadband internet is working and that the launcher or console store is signed in.
  • Check available storage, including the space needed for temporary installation files.
  • Restart Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher or the console, then retry the installation.
  • Check the store listing for maintenance notices, required updates or a platform mismatch.
  • Do not assume a physical disc or cartridge guarantees a completely offline first launch; follow the instructions supplied with that regional edition.

The image does not look like the original

That is expected when comparing the Definitive Edition with the 2002 PC release. Updated lighting, high-resolution textures, longer draw distances and modern controls are deliberate parts of the newer build. If matching the historical look is more important than convenience, verify that you are buying the classic release rather than the modern collection; current standalone availability is not established for every region.

Key dates and edition context

Steam Support records May 21, 2002 as the historical PC release date for GTA III. Steam lists January 19, 2023 as the PC release date for the Definitive Edition. Those dates identify two different releases: the original PC game and the later modern collection. Rockstar’s current platform information concerns the Definitive Edition on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.

A quick decision checklist

  1. Decide whether you want the modern Definitive Edition or are specifically seeking the 2002-era presentation.
  2. Choose PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch based on the hardware you already own.
  3. On PC, compare your processor, graphics card, RAM, Windows version and free storage with Steam’s published specifications.
  4. Remember that every current route described here is a three-game package, not a GTA III-only purchase.
  5. Have a Rockstar Games Social Club account and broadband internet ready for the PC entitlement process.
  6. For a physical copy, verify the local edition and console generation; the announced physical route is the Switch trilogy, with physical Xbox and PlayStation editions announced in selected markets.
  7. After installation, open the collection and select GTA III from its game menu.
