Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is an Active Time Battle RPG in which you build a flexible party, spend ATB charges on abilities, exploit enemy weaknesses, and develop characters, weapons, materia, and summons. Start with Auto mode for routine fights, move to Semi or Manual when a boss demands timing, and inspect enemy information before spending upgrade materials. What is the basic way to play Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis?
Each encounter combines real-time Active Time Battle gauges with menu-selected abilities. Your characters’ gauges fill during combat; when a gauge is ready, choose an ability, materia spell, summon, or limit break. The official game-system description also identifies Command Stance and Limit Combo as game-specific tactical systems. You are not only choosing the strongest attack: you are deciding when to spend ATB, which target to hit, and whether the party should stay aggressive or protect itself.

Square Enix lists the game for iOS, Android, and Steam and describes it as free-to-play with in-app purchases. The same account can be used across mobile and Steam with cross-save according to Square Enix’s Steam announcement. Solo and co-op battles are supported, and parties and equipment are customizable, so there is no single team or weapon that is best for every quest.

How does combat work?
Learn the ATB ability cycle
Watch the controlled character’s ATB gauge, wait for it to fill, and select an available command. Abilities can deal physical or magical damage, heal, apply support effects, or target a particular sigil. Materia expands the commands available to a character, while summons and limit breaks provide larger, more specialized effects. Because gauges refill continuously, the useful skill is spending a charge at the right moment rather than pressing every command immediately.
In a simple encounter, use ordinary abilities to defeat targets as gauges refill. In a difficult encounter, hold a charge for a healing window, a vulnerability, or a sigil that must be broken quickly. Limit Combo and Command Stance add another layer: treat them as tools for coordinating the party’s damage and survivability instead of buttons to trigger on cooldown without checking the battlefield.
Choose Auto, Semi, or Manual
The combat guide for Ever Crisis describes three control modes. Their practical differences are below.

Auto is convenient, but the combat guide cautions that it can make poor decisions in complex fights. A sensible learning path is Auto for straightforward battles, Semi to practice stance control, and Manual whenever a boss mechanic, target priority, or healing timing cannot be left to the game. This is a practical progression, not an official difficulty ranking.
What does attack stance do?
Attack stance favors offense. It increases your pressure on the enemy and is the stance to use when you are pushing damage or trying to break sigils. Defense stance reduces incoming damage and increases healing, making it the safer choice while the party is injured or an enemy is preparing a dangerous attack.

Stance switching is a response to conditions, not a permanent setting. Remain in attack stance while the party is healthy and the enemy is vulnerable; move to defense when incoming damage rises, a heal is needed, or survival is more important than a small increase in damage. Return to attack after the danger passes. In Semi mode you make this decision while the controlled character’s abilities are automated; in Manual mode you coordinate the stance with each ability selection.
How do I break sigils?
Read the enemy information first
Before a difficult quest, open its enemy information. The combat guide says this screen shows weaknesses, resistances, immunities, and other relevant mechanics. Use it to identify which damage types and sigils your party must cover. Entering a fight without checking can leave you repeatedly using an element the target resists or bringing no ability that can answer its special phase.

Interrupt a Stream Phase
When a boss enters Stream Phase, a sigil bar appears. Use abilities with the matching sigils to deplete that bar and interrupt the phase. Change to attack stance while you are actively breaking the bar, but switch toward defense if the party cannot survive the incoming pressure. If the bar is not falling, pause and verify that the selected commands actually match the displayed sigils; adding unrelated damage will not substitute for the required symbols.
Build for the mechanic, not a universal tier list
The useful comparison is whether a character, weapon, or materia answers the current enemy’s weakness or sigil requirement, whether the party can deal enough damage while keeping itself alive, and whether you have reliable materials to improve the option. A fixed “best character” list ignores the game’s customizable parties and changing encounter requirements.
A repeatable preparation loop
Use this sequence before a quest that has defeated you or introduces a new mechanic.

- Inspect the quest. Open enemy information and note weaknesses, resistances, immunities, and any sigil requirement.
- Form the party. Select characters and equipment that cover the required damage or sigils and leave room for healing or survival. The game supports customizable parties and equipment.
- Set a control mode. Begin in Auto only when the encounter is simple. Choose Semi or Manual if you need to control stance, timing, or target selection.
- Enter in attack stance. Use it for normal damage and for breaking a sigil bar when the correct symbols are available.
- Watch party condition. Shift toward defense when damage spikes or healing is urgent. Do not wait for a character to fall before reacting.
- Take over difficult decisions. In Manual, reserve ATB for the heal, sigil, or target that matters instead of allowing Auto to spend it elsewhere.
- Review the loss. If the party still fails, identify whether the problem was a missing weakness or sigil, insufficient survival, or an upgrade gap. Then improve the relevant system rather than raising character level blindly.
What should I upgrade first?
Think of progression as four connected tracks: characters, weapons, materia, and summons. Square Enix’s official overview names character strengthening and statstream or limit-break growth, weapon and materia enhancement, materia synthesis, and summon strengthening. Chocobo expeditions can also return items and character experience. Each track solves a different problem, so spend materials according to what the next encounter exposes.

Characters: levels and character streams
The character and weapon upgrade guide describes two character-development routes: ordinary character levels and character streams. Levels provide the straightforward increase you expect from gaining experience. Character streams raise stats and unlock or improve limit breaks, giving longer-term development beyond the level number.
When a fight is close, first check whether the active characters can gain a level or make an accessible stream upgrade. A stream node that improves a relevant limit break may matter more for a boss than a small, unrelated stat increase. Stream terminology and menu placement can change with updates, so use the labels shown in your current client rather than treating an older guide’s screen order as permanent.
Weapons: levels, caps, rarity, and overboosting
Weapons have their own levels. The upgrade guide describes level caps that can be raised, rarity upgrades below five stars, and overboosting when duplicate copies are available. These are separate from character levels: a well-leveled character can still underperform if the equipped weapon is neglected.
Start by enhancing the weapons that supply the damage, healing, or sigil coverage your current party actually uses. Raise a level cap when the weapon is blocked by it, and consider a rarity upgrade when the system makes that option available. Overboosting depends on duplicates, so do not plan your early progress around obtaining a particular number of copies. The guide’s terminology is version-sensitive; confirm the current requirement in the in-game upgrade screen.

Materia: coverage before perfection
Materia determines which additional abilities a character can bring into battle. Enhance useful materia with items and synthesize new materia with recipes, as described by Square Enix. Before optimizing minor stats, make sure the party can answer the enemy information you read: carry the needed element, sigil, healing, or support effect.
Materia synthesis can involve random outcomes, so avoid treating one perfect roll as a prerequisite for learning the game. Improve the materia that repeatedly solves a real encounter problem, and revisit the loadout when a new quest reveals a resistance or immunity. A materia that matches a required sigil is more valuable in that fight than a stronger-looking option that cannot interrupt the mechanic.
Summons: a separate power source
Summons are part of the combat toolset and have their own strengthening path. Use them when their effect fits the encounter rather than assuming every summon should be upgraded equally. If a boss survives your normal ability cycle but your party is otherwise stable, a summon upgrade may provide the missing burst; if the problem is that the party dies first, character, weapon, or healing improvements are the more direct answer.
Chocobo expeditions: passive returns
Square Enix describes sending chocobos on expeditions with characters to explore and earn items and character experience points. Start expeditions when you are leaving the game so the system can return resources while you are away. Treat the rewards as an additional stream of materials and experience, not as a replacement for choosing upgrades that address the next battle.
How should I compare characters, weapons, and materia?
Do not compare them in isolation. Use three questions:

- Does it answer the encounter? Check the enemy’s weakness, resistance, immunity, and sigil requirement. An option that covers the mechanic has practical value even if another option has a higher displayed number.
- Can the party finish safely? Balance damage with healing or other survival tools. A fast defeat is irrelevant if the party cannot withstand the boss’s dangerous phase.
- Can you improve it reliably? Prefer upgrades supported by materials, levels, streams, or available weapon enhancements. Do not sacrifice a dependable improvement chasing an unverified ideal build.
This framework also explains why a universal tier list is a poor beginner substitute for reading the quest. Party customization, solo and co-op modes, and changing enemy mechanics mean that the right answer depends on the fight and on the resources you possess.
Solo and co-op: what changes?
Square Enix confirms both solo and co-op battles. In solo play, you are responsible for the whole party’s composition, equipment, stance decisions, and ability timing. Co-op adds coordination: agree on which role covers damage, healing, or sigil breaking before the fight, and avoid duplicating a tool while leaving a required weakness uncovered.
Use solo encounters to learn the controls and test a loadout. Move to co-op when you understand the enemy information and can explain what your character contributes. The presence of co-op does not make a particular character or weapon mandatory; it changes how responsibilities can be divided.
What to do when a boss stops your progress
If damage is too low
Confirm that the enemy is not resisting your main damage type, then check weapon levels and caps. Add a materia or weapon that exploits the listed weakness, and use attack stance during the damage window. If the party still lacks burst, review character streams, limit-break improvements, and summon strengthening.
If the party dies before the timer or phase ends
Use defense stance sooner, keep a healing command available, and move to Manual so ATB is not spent on low-priority attacks. Inspect the enemy information again for a mechanic you missed. Character strengthening and weapon upgrades can raise the margin for error without requiring a completely different party.
If a Stream Phase will not break
Look at the sigil bar and select abilities with the matching sigils. Confirm that the ability is available and that the party member carrying it is not being left on Auto at the wrong moment. Switch to Manual for the phase, remain in attack stance while breaking, and return to defense if the incoming damage threatens a defeat.
If upgrades feel confusing
Work through the guaranteed systems in the order the client exposes them: character levels and streams, weapon enhancement, useful materia, then summons or additional optimization. The exact menu labels can change, especially for streams, weapon rarity, and overboosting, so read the current upgrade screen and its material requirements before committing resources.
