Dicevaders is a single-player, turn-based dice roguelike deckbuilder in which you build an alien force on a grid, roll dice to activate columns, and combine units, artifacts, commander perks, and dice manipulation into scoring turns. “Combat” is primarily a scoring system rather than traditional movement-and-attack tactics: your board produces an attack score, and you improve that score over successive turns until the current target is reached.

What Dicevaders is—and what “combat” means

Dicevaders is made by Pengonauts and published by Playstack. Steam describes it as a tactical scoring and combo builder: you draft pieces, place them on a grid, and use dice results to decide which columns activate. Earth’s StarVaders Pilots are the opposing force, but the central decision is how efficiently your board converts a roll into damage or progress.

That distinction matters if you have played conventional tactics games. The available descriptions do not present a normal battlefield in which units walk across tiles, select individual enemies, and trade attacks. Instead, units occupy grid spaces and contribute strength or effects when their columns score. A launch-era PC Gamer account describes a target-damage goal over a series of turns; treat that as an observed explanation of play rather than a permanent, quoted rulebook definition. Commander-specific effects and future patches can change the details.

The beginner’s objective is therefore twofold:

  • Build a board whose important columns can score consistently.
  • Spend dice-manipulation resources only when they create a meaningfully better scoring turn or a necessary shop opportunity.

A large unit with an impressive number is not automatically a good purchase. A smaller unit that activates on most turns can contribute more over the run if your dice and board repeatedly reach its column.

The turn cycle, step by step

Use the following sequence as a reliable mental model. Individual commanders can add or alter effects, so read the in-game tooltip for the commander you selected.

  1. Resolve start-of-turn effects. Some commander or engine effects happen before the dice roll. The unofficial Dicevaders.Wiki beginner guide gives examples of these pre-roll triggers. Let them resolve before deciding how to spend manipulation resources.
  2. Roll the dice row. Results correspond to grid columns. A roll tells you which parts of the board are eligible to score, not simply how much damage you deal immediately.
  3. Inspect the board that can score. Check the units and artifacts in the activated columns, their current strength, and any effects that require neighboring pieces, repeated results, or another condition.
  4. Shape the roll when the improvement is worthwhile. Budges can adjust dice, while Chrono can reroll dice and refresh the shop. Both are limited resources, so compare the expected gain with the opportunity cost before using one.
  5. Resolve scoring and effects. Units fire or contribute, artifacts apply their effects, and your attack score advances. The exact order and bonuses can depend on your commander and current build.
  6. Use the between-turn shop and upgrades. Spend the run’s money on pieces, artifacts, upgrades, or additional dice resources that make future scoring more reliable. Then reassess which columns your new board can actually activate.

The sequence is more useful than memorizing a fixed “best” roll. Before every decision, ask which columns your engine can score now, what one change would improve that outcome, and whether the resource spent on that change will be unavailable at a more important moment later.

How dice activate columns and create combos

Dice are both random input and a planning tool. The official Steam description specifically calls out aligning dice into pairs, triples, or quadruples for combos. Repeated results can therefore be more valuable than several unrelated numbers, provided your board has pieces that benefit from those activations.

Roll pattern How to think about it Beginner check
One result in a useful column A single column may still score a strong unit or trigger an essential effect. Do not reroll automatically; first inspect the value already available.
A pair Two matching results can activate a repeated pattern and are a common reliable foundation. Protect a dependable pair unless a reroll clearly enables a much better board state.
A triple Three matching results can support a larger combo when your units and artifacts are arranged to exploit it. Confirm that the third activation adds real strength rather than merely changing the number on the screen.
A quadruple Four matching results represent the largest repeated pattern specifically highlighted in the store description. Chase it only when the board and available resources make the payoff substantial.

These patterns are not valuable in isolation. A pair that activates two useful columns can outperform a speculative attempt at a quadruple that leaves your strongest pieces inactive. The independent beginner guide recommends favoring dependable scoring over breaking a reliable pair too early.

Read dice results together with board coverage. If most of your strength sits in columns you rarely roll, buying more strength there may not solve the problem. A less powerful unit in a frequently activated column can improve the run’s average output and make your future decisions easier.

Budges: adjusting a die without wasting the turn

Budges are the resource used to manipulate a throw. A launch-era press account describes a Budge as moving a die up or down by one and says that Budges are finite, with opportunities to buy more between turns. Because this detail comes from launch coverage rather than a permanent rulebook, confirm the current direction, limits, and price in the live tooltip.

  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

When a Budge is usually justified

  • It converts an otherwise inactive roll into a scoring column containing a major unit or an important trigger.
  • It completes a pair, triple, or other combo that your existing board is already prepared to use.
  • It prevents a high-value turn from being lost when only one die is out of position.

When to keep the Budge

  • The adjustment would activate a weak or empty column.
  • You would break a dependable pair merely to pursue a larger pattern with no matching board payoff.
  • The current turn already scores enough and a later target is likely to require precise manipulation.

Think of a Budge as buying reliability, not as correcting every imperfect roll. Before spending it, identify the exact column or combo it creates and the effect that will follow. If you cannot name the resulting benefit, save the resource.

Chrono: rerolls and shop refreshes

Chrono has two explicitly described uses: rerolling dice and refreshing the shop. The independent guide warns against hoarding Chrono indefinitely, while also treating it as a resource that should be spent deliberately. The right choice depends on whether the immediate scoring opportunity or the next shop has greater value for your current build.

Use Chrono to reroll when

  • The initial roll misses the columns where your engine is concentrated.
  • A reroll can complete a combo that several pieces are already waiting for.
  • The current target requires a strong scoring turn and your unmodified result cannot approach it.

Use Chrono to refresh the shop when

  • Your board has a clear gap, such as no reliable piece for a frequently activated column.
  • A commander perk or artifact interaction makes a particular type of draft unusually valuable.
  • The current shop contains no purchase that improves a pattern you can realistically activate.

Do not treat Chrono as unlimited retries. A reroll that changes weak numbers into different weak numbers has consumed future flexibility. Likewise, refreshing a shop without enough money or board space can leave you with no practical upgrade. Check your funds, open spaces, and current column coverage first.

Building the board: units, artifacts, commanders, and upgrades

Units are the scoring engine

Units occupy the grid and provide the strength or effects that turn an activated column into progress. Evaluate a unit on two axes: its immediate contribution and the frequency with which your dice can activate its location. A unit that is powerful but isolated from your normal roll patterns may be less useful than a modest unit that scores almost every turn.

When comparing two units, ask:

  • Which columns can activate this unit with the dice patterns I am already pursuing?
  • Does it need a pair, triple, neighboring piece, or another condition?
  • Does its effect improve the rest of the board, or does it only add isolated strength?
  • Will I have enough grid space and dice coverage to use it after the next few purchases?

Artifacts add effects and positional value

Artifacts provide additional effects and synergies. Placement matters: the unofficial guide notes that artifact experience is tied to columns, so an artifact’s location can influence how often its benefit is realized. Treat an artifact as part of the board’s geometry, not as a detached card in an inventory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying one, identify the column or pattern it improves. An artifact that enhances a column you activate repeatedly can compound over many turns; the same artifact in a rarely scored column may remain dormant. If moving or replacing it has a cost in the current version, read the tooltip before committing.

Commanders define the run’s priorities

Commanders have different perks, scaling, and synergies. A strategy that works for one commander may not transfer cleanly to another. Learn the selected commander’s perk before drafting heavily, especially if the perk changes start-of-turn effects, dice behavior, or the value of a particular board arrangement.

For a first run, choose purchases that make the commander’s perk easier to trigger rather than trying to force a generally popular build. There is no supported static tier list in the available material, and balance can change with updates. Compare commanders by their starting perk, how their engine scales, and how forgiving their dice manipulation is—not by an unverified ranking.

Upgrades compete for the same run budget

Between turns, the press gameplay account describes purchasing units, artifacts, and dice resources. Money is therefore an opportunity-cost decision. An upgrade that raises a number but does not improve activation may be weaker than a resource that lets you reach an existing combo. Conversely, buying only manipulation resources can leave the board too weak to benefit from better rolls.

Use a simple purchase test: Will this item increase the score of a pattern I can activate in the next one or two turns? If not, defer it unless it solves a structural problem such as an empty scoring column or a missing commander synergy.

A first-run plan for beginners

  1. Read the commander perk before the first purchase. Note whether it rewards a particular column, timing window, dice pattern, or effect.
  2. Map your starting board. Identify which columns contain units, which contain artifacts, and which are empty. This gives you a practical target for the first shop.
  3. Take the first reliable scoring pattern. Favor a pair or a frequently activated column over a dramatic combo you cannot yet support.
  4. Buy for coverage before excess strength. If one column is consistently inactive, a purchase that fills or improves coverage can raise more turns than a larger number in an already-served column.
  5. Reserve one manipulation resource for a consequential turn. You do not need to spend every Budge or Chrono immediately, but do not preserve them so rigidly that an important shop or target is missed.
  6. Recheck the board after every draft. A new unit or artifact can change which dice results are valuable. Update your plan rather than following the original pattern automatically.
  7. Use the shop as a correction tool. If the board cannot activate its strongest pieces, refresh with Chrono only when the likely improvement justifies the resource and you can afford the resulting purchase.
  8. Learn from the failed turn. If a roll did not score, decide whether the problem was dice placement, insufficient board coverage, an unmet effect condition, or an overly ambitious combo. Fix that specific cause on the next purchase.

This plan is intentionally conservative. It teaches the relationship between board position and dice results before you add more complicated synergies.

How to decide what to buy first

Your current situation Usually prioritize Reason
A strong column scores often, but other columns are empty Coverage for an adjacent or commonly rolled column More scoring opportunities can outperform adding strength to the column that already works.
You have a dependable pair but no larger combo support A unit or artifact that rewards the pair or improves its activated columns It preserves reliability while creating a path to scale.
Your commander perk is rarely triggering Pieces and dice resources that make the perk’s condition attainable The commander’s defining advantage should shape the board.
The board is strong but rolls miss it Budges, Chrono, or a repositioning purchase available in the current shop The problem is consistency rather than raw strength.
The shop has only oversized pieces with no activation path Save money or consider a targeted Chrono refresh A high displayed value is not useful if the board cannot score it.

The table is a decision framework, not a fixed build order. Current prices, effects, and commander interactions can change, so verify each item’s tooltip in your version.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

Chasing a quadruple because it looks impressive

A quadruple can be valuable, but the combo only matters if your board has enough relevant effects in the activated columns. Fix this by calculating the immediate payoff before spending a Budge or Chrono. If the completed combo activates weak spaces, keep the reliable pair instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying the biggest number in the shop

Raw strength does not guarantee frequent scoring. Compare activation frequency, effect conditions, commander synergy, and available space. A smaller piece that scores every turn can produce more progress over the run than a large piece that activates rarely.

Ignoring column placement

Grid position is part of the unit’s value, and artifact effects can also depend on columns. Before drafting, look at the dice results you commonly see and place purchases where those results can reach them. If the game offers a placement choice, do not treat it as cosmetic.

Spending every Budge immediately

Budges improve a throw, but finite resources are most valuable when they rescue a high-impact turn or complete a meaningful combo. Keep at least some flexibility unless the current target demands immediate intervention.

Hoarding Chrono forever

The opposite mistake is refusing to reroll or refresh even when the current roll cannot score and the shop cannot repair the board. Use Chrono when it changes the run’s direction, then continue building rather than waiting for a perfect future opportunity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming one commander strategy fits all commanders

Perks and scaling differ. If a plan depends on a particular trigger, verify that the selected commander actually rewards it. Start each run by reading the perk and choosing the first purchase that makes it practical.

Treating the game like conventional tactical combat

Looking for movement paths or individual enemy attacks can obscure the real puzzle. Focus on column activation, score output, combos, and the timing of your limited manipulation resources.

Understanding targets, scoring, and loss of momentum

Descriptions of launch gameplay frame progress around a target-damage goal across turns. In practical terms, each turn is an attempt to convert the current roll and board into enough attack score to keep pace with that goal. If a turn underperforms, diagnose the reason instead of simply buying more strength.

  • Missed columns: The dice did not reach the board’s strongest areas. Improve coverage or use targeted manipulation.
  • Insufficient combo support: You chased repeated results without enough units or artifacts to reward them. Draft supporting effects before increasing the combo ambition.
  • Weak placement: A good item is in a column you rarely activate. Adjust future placement or prioritize effects that work in your active columns.
  • Resource timing: Budges or Chrono were spent on low-impact turns and unavailable when the target demanded a stronger result. Reserve them for turns with a clear payoff.

Because exact target values, damage formulas, and commander exceptions are not established in the available public descriptions, use the current in-game interface as the authority for the number required on a particular turn.

Keeping advice current after updates

Dicevaders was released only weeks before the October 13, 2026 information check, so balance, prices, platform listings, and tooltip wording can change. For a current run, prioritize the live game over an old guide in these areas:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Budges’ exact adjustment rules, limits, and cost.
  • Chrono’s reroll and shop-refresh cost or any commander-specific exception.
  • Unit, artifact, and upgrade prices.
  • Target values, score formulas, and the order in which effects resolve.
  • Regional price, discount, and Nintendo Switch availability.

The unofficial Dicevaders.Wiki beginner page, dated September 27, 2026, is useful for broad early advice but is not an official rulebook. PC Gamer’s October 3 launch account is an observed gameplay explanation, so use it for context rather than assuming every fine-grained detail is permanent. Steam’s product page and current in-game tooltips are the safest references for live rules.

Quick reference for your next turn

  • Which columns can this roll activate?
  • What is the strongest effect already available without spending a resource?
  • Would one Budge create a real combo or merely change an otherwise weak result?
  • Is a Chrono reroll better than saving it for a shop refresh?
  • Does the purchase improve a pattern I can activate, or only increase an isolated number?
  • Does the commander perk influence this choice?
  • Will the new unit or artifact have space and dice coverage on future turns?

If you can answer those questions before rolling again, you are playing Dicevaders’ central game: converting uncertain dice into a repeatable scoring engine through placement, drafting, and disciplined resource use.
