Dice Throne is a turn-based dice-and-card battle game. On your turn, you manage combat points and cards, roll your hero’s dice up to three times to match an ability on the hero board, resolve any required target and defense steps, then finish with a second Main Phase and cleanup. Status tokens add persistent, spendable, stacked, or unique effects to that core loop.
This guide describes the baseline rules available on October 11, 2026, using the official Rulepop reference and the FAQ-listed Dice Throne Rulebook Version 2.4.3 (2025). An official announcement dated October 5, 2026 says timing and deck-depletion changes take effect on January 1, 2027; those future rules are identified separately below. Check the live official rules reference and the official FAQ and downloads for your hero, expansion, and current date.
What you are trying to do in Dice Throne
Each player controls a hero with a unique board, dice, cards, combat points (CP), and status tokens. The hero board shows combinations of die faces that activate abilities. Your objective in a normal battle is to use those abilities, card effects, and status effects to defeat the opposing hero. The exact abilities, costs, damage values, and token wording come from the selected hero’s board and leaflet, not from a universal list.

The most useful beginner mental model is:
- Roll to unlock: your dice attempt to form one of the combinations printed on your hero board.
- Spend resources to improve: cards and CP can upgrade abilities, alter dice, or create one-time effects.
- Resolve the current effect exactly: follow the ability, card, defense, and token text in the order stated.
- Track tokens on the receiving hero: status effects are represented by tokens taken from the effect’s owner and placed on the affected hero’s board.
Hero-specific rules matter. Two heroes can use the same phase structure but have completely different dice patterns, card interactions, defenses, and status effects.

- Compatible with the entire Dice Throne ecosystem - mix and match heroes for endless unique battles!
Before the first turn
Choose heroes and collect their components
Select the heroes and mode your group wants to play. Give each hero its board, dice, deck, combat-point supply, and the hero leaflet that explains its tokens and special rules. Keep each hero’s status tokens with that hero’s leaflet; when an effect is gained, the token is moved to the receiving player’s board.
Use the current rules reference
The official Rulepop site is a dynamic reference that can adapt to expansions and variants. It supplements the printed rulebook and is the best place to check a specific ruling. The official FAQ provides the downloadable Rulebook Version 2.4.3 (2025). An older broad-framework PDF is available at this rules download, but newer official material takes precedence.
Agree on the mode
A standard duel, multiplayer game, team game, and campaign or cooperative mode can change when targets are chosen and whether a defense step applies. Do not assume that every mode uses the same target sequence. Open the corresponding mode entry in the official reference before beginning.

The baseline turn has two Main Phases separated by the offensive roll and any applicable target or defense resolution. Use this order as a table-side checklist:
| Phase | What happens | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Upkeep | Resolve effects that specifically occur during upkeep. | Read the active hero’s board, leaflet, tokens, and cards for upkeep instructions. |
| Income | Gain the income provided by the current rules and resolve any income effects. | The older rulebook framework says a player gains 1 CP at the start of Income and that the Start Player skips the first Income Phase; verify these baseline details against the FAQ-listed 2025 rulebook. |
| Main Phase 1 | Take permitted actions before rolling. | Use cards, spend CP, and follow each card’s timing restriction. |
| Offensive Roll Phase | Make up to three roll attempts, keeping or rerolling dice between attempts to pursue a listed ability. | Check the exact combination on your hero board and resolve the ability you actually achieve. |
| Targeting | Choose or confirm a target when the selected mode or ability requires it. | Multiplayer, team, and campaign modes can use different targeting procedures. |
| Defensive Roll Phase | The defender rolls a defense ability when the attack and mode provide one. | Some attacks do not create a defense step; follow the attack’s instructions. |
| Main Phase 2 | Take permitted actions after combat resolution. | Use remaining cards or CP only when their timing allows it. |
| Discard Phase | Apply the current discard rules and resolve discard-timed effects. | Check hand limits or other instructions in the current rule set and hero material. |
| End-of-turn cleanup | Resolve effects that last through the turn and pass play as directed by the mode. | Do not remove a persistent token unless its own text, a card, or an ability removes it. |
The selected hero determines which dice combinations are available and what those combinations do. The phase name alone does not tell you whether an action is legal; the ability, card, token, or mode text does.

How the dice activate abilities
Read the board before rolling
Every hero board displays the combinations that unlock its abilities. Identify the combinations you can realistically complete with your five dice, then decide which dice to keep and which to reroll. You are making up to three roll attempts in the Offensive Roll Phase; a successful combination activates the corresponding ability.
Use rerolls deliberately
After each attempt, keep useful faces and reroll the rest. A card or CP effect may alter a die or upgrade an ability, but it must be legal in the current phase. Do not treat a near-match as an activation: the printed combination and any stated symbols or thresholds control.

Once the combination succeeds, read the full ability text, including damage, costs, status effects, and any choice of modes. Resolve that text in order. If it creates a target or defense step, follow the mode’s procedure; otherwise continue through the turn sequence.
Cards and combat points
Combat points
CP is the resource used by many hero and card effects. The broad framework in the older rulebook PDF describes a cap of 15 CP, with 1 CP gained at the start of Income, and a Start Player who skips the first Income Phase. Because the FAQ lists a newer 2025 rulebook, confirm those details in the current download before enforcing them in a tournament or teaching game.
Cards
Cards can upgrade abilities, modify dice, or provide one-time effects. Read a card’s timing, cost, target, and resolution text before playing it. Main Phase 1 and Main Phase 2 are separate opportunities; a card restricted to one cannot be played in the other. A card that modifies dice must also satisfy the timing rules in force for the relevant roll.

Do not spend resources by assumption
- Do not pay CP unless the effect lists a CP cost.
- Do not play a card outside its stated phase or timing window.
- Do not use a die modifier after the roll window has closed.
- When an upgrade changes an ability, use the upgraded text for that activation rather than combining old and new text unless the card says to do so.
Status effects: the rules that prevent most mistakes
Where tokens come from and where they go
Each hero’s leaflet lists that hero’s status effects and supplies the corresponding tokens. When a hero gains or is inflicted with an effect, take that token from its owner’s leaflet and place it on the receiving hero’s board. The receiving board is the record of who is currently affected.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To remove an effect, return its token to the appropriate space on the hero’s leaflet. If the hero that inflicted an effect is defeated, effects it already placed on another hero remain in play unless a rule removes them.
Spendable effects
A spendable effect is discarded when used and provides the benefit written on the token or its associated text. Unless the effect says otherwise, it can be spent during any phase of any player’s turn and resolves immediately. Once spent, it cannot be interrupted. Return or discard it as instructed; do not leave a spent token active.
Persistent effects
A persistent effect remains until a card, effect, or ability removes it. Its token stays on the affected hero’s board between turns. If the effect has a stack limit, that limit caps how many tokens of that type one player may have. When an effect raises its own stack limit, the increase applies only to that player and lasts for the rest of the game.
Unique effects
Unique effects override general status-effect rules when their individual wording says so. Follow the token, leaflet, card, or ability text even when it differs from the normal spendable or persistent procedure. Do not infer an exception from a token’s color, name, or whether it looks helpful.

Companions are not status effects
Companion pieces may look like status tokens, but they are a separate game element. An effect that changes, removes, or limits status effects does not automatically affect a companion.
Status-effect checklist
- Identify the exact hero leaflet that defines the token.
- Move the token from its owner’s leaflet to the receiving hero’s board when it is gained.
- Check whether it is spendable, persistent, stacked, or unique.
- Apply the printed timing, duration, stack limit, and removal instruction.
- Return the token to the correct leaflet space when it is removed.
- Keep effects in play after the inflicting hero is defeated unless a rule says otherwise.
Never determine an effect from appearance alone. The hero leaflet and current official rulings are authoritative for that token.
Timing and player interaction
Timing questions often arise when both players want to modify dice or play an action. The official October 5, 2026 announcement states that a rules update begins on January 1, 2027. Its summary says the active player gets the first chance to take actions and modify dice; the non-active player can act only when altering Offensive Ability dice, altering their defense dice, or when damage is about to be received. During other die rolls, players may take only actions that affect those dice. The announcement describes these as timing clarifications and says the core Golden Rules do not change.
On October 11, 2026, those are announced future rules, not yet effective rules. For games before January 1, use the then-current official reference. Near and after the effective date, recheck the full advanced rules and PDF at the official update page rather than relying on a pre-2027 summary.
Deck depletion and the 2027 change
The same announcement changes what happens when a player runs out of cards: beginning January 1, 2027, the discard pile will no longer be reshuffled to form a new deck. Until that date, follow the active official rules for deck depletion. Because this is a version-sensitive rule, write the effective date on any house reference sheet and update it when the new advanced rules are published.

Common first-game errors and fixes
Activating a near-match
Symptom: a player treats four matching symbols or an almost-complete sequence as an ability. Fix: compare the final dice to the exact combination printed on the hero board. Only a listed combination activates that ability.
Skipping the defense question
Symptom: an attacker rolls damage and immediately applies it. Fix: check whether that attack and mode create a Defensive Roll Phase. If the defender has a defense ability, resolve it before applying the final result.
Removing tokens at the end of every turn
Symptom: persistent tokens disappear during cleanup. Fix: remove a persistent effect only when its own text, a card, or an ability removes it.
Moving a token to the wrong place
Symptom: a status token is left on the inflicter’s board or returned to a generic supply. Fix: take the token from its owner’s leaflet and place it on the receiving hero’s board; return it to the appropriate leaflet space when removed.
Applying a status-effect modifier to a companion
Symptom: a companion is removed or altered by a status rule. Fix: companions are separate from status effects and require their own instructions.
Using the wrong edition of a timing rule
Symptom: players argue over who acts first or whether a discard pile can be reshuffled. Fix: state the game date, consult the current Rulepop entry, and apply the January 1, 2027 changes only when they are effective.
A compact teaching script
- Explain that the hero board lists dice combinations and the leaflet defines that hero’s tokens.
- Show the turn order: Upkeep, Income, Main Phase 1, Offensive Roll, any required targeting and defense, Main Phase 2, Discard, and cleanup.
- Have the active player roll up to three times, keeping and rerolling dice to pursue one printed ability.
- Resolve the ability exactly, including target, defense, damage, and token instructions.
- Demonstrate one spendable token and one persistent token so players see the difference between discarding and leaving a token in play.
- Point out the official Rulepop reference and the hero leaflet for questions that the table summary cannot answer.
This approach teaches the repeatable structure without pretending that every hero or game mode has identical effects.
