To play Diablo II in a headset, use D2R VR, an unofficial community mod for Diablo II: Resurrected. It adds stereo overhead, third-person, mixed-reality floor, and first-person camera modes. The first-person mode is an early preview rather than a fully calibrated replacement for the normal game, and the project supports offline single-player use only. You need a legitimate PC installation of Resurrected, the documented game/loader versions, ReShade with depth support, BodyWalk/FlatVR components, and a Windows PC VR setup for headset play.
What D2R VR actually adds
D2R VR is not a virtual-reality version of the original 2000 Diablo II. Its target is Diablo II: Resurrected, Blizzard’s remastered release. The mod supplies the VR presentation and input layer; it does not include Blizzard’s game files, and it is not made, endorsed, or supported by Blizzard Entertainment.
The project documents four ways to view the game:
- Overhead stereo: the familiar Diablo perspective rendered separately for each eye.
- Third person: a camera positioned behind the hero.
- Mixed-reality floor view: the game is placed on the floor in your room.
- First person: the hero’s arms and weapons are represented through the motion controllers.
You can also run the mod on a normal monitor with a mouse and keyboard. That flat mode is useful for testing the installation and does not require a headset or the BodyWalk/FlatVR VR components.
Requirements and compatibility
Gather the following before installing. The versions below are the pairing documented by the project’s README, not a promise that every future game update will remain compatible.

| Item | What the project specifies | Why it is needed |
|---|---|---|
| Game | A legitimate installed copy of Diablo II: Resurrected | D2R VR is a mod, not a standalone game, and it does not redistribute Blizzard files. |
| Game and loader versions | Resurrected build 3.3.93787 with D2RLoader 1.3.1 | The loader uses version-specific addresses. The README says other builds require their addresses to be checked. |
| ReShade | ReShade with add-on support and the Generic Depth add-on enabled | The mod uses the depth information for its VR presentation. |
| VR components | BodyWalk 1.78 or later, including FlatVR and its Game Link plugin | These components provide headset movement, virtual-display support, and game linking. |
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, x64, as specified by the BodyWalkVR listing | The documented installer and VR integration target 64-bit Windows. |
| Headset | A PC VR headset for headset mode | The project does not name or endorse a particular headset model. |
Build and loader compatibility is the most important caveat. If the installed game has been updated beyond the documented build, do not assume that D2RLoader 1.3.1 will work. Check the project’s current documentation for the supported pairing and any address updates before changing files or troubleshooting the headset.
Install the mod and its supporting software
The exact installer package can change, but the README’s workflow is consistent: install the game and prerequisites first, then use the D2R VR setup materials to place the mod components beside the game executable.
- Install or update Resurrected. Confirm that you own and can launch the PC version normally. If you need a particular documented build, follow the project’s current instructions for obtaining or retaining that build rather than guessing at files.
- Install the matching D2RLoader. For the documented setup, that is D2RLoader 1.3.1 paired with game build 3.3.93787. A mismatch can prevent the game from launching or cause the injected components to fail.
- Install ReShade with add-on support. Enable the Generic Depth add-on during configuration. A standard ReShade installation without add-on support is not the same setup.
- Install BodyWalk 1.78 or later for headset play. Ensure FlatVR and the Game Link plugin are included. These are separate products from D2R VR and have their own installation and licensing terms.
- Run the D2R VR setup or installer. The project places its settings executable,
D2R_VR_Settings.exe, besideD2R.exeand creates a desktop shortcut. If the settings program is somewhere else, check that you selected the actual Resurrected installation directory.
Flat-monitor users can stop after the D2R VR components are installed. You do not need a headset, BodyWalk, or FlatVR merely to run the game window on a monitor, although ReShade and the loader requirements still apply to the mod installation.
Configure Resurrected for stereo rendering
Open the game’s video options before launching through the VR settings program. The README gives these values for its stereo-rendering path:
- Vertical Sync: Off.
- Frame cap: 180. The project’s stated reason is to provide 90 frames per eye.
- Anti-aliasing: FXAA or MSAA. Do not select TAA for this setup.
- DLSS: Either on or off is documented as acceptable.
- Ambient occlusion: Medium.
These are D2R VR’s own instructions, not universal settings for every VR game. If a newer game build adds or renames options, use the current project documentation and keep the resulting image stable rather than blindly copying an old value.

Make the game view square
The headset expects a square game view. The README describes two ways to provide it:
- Run the game in a window and drag the window edges until its width and height are approximately equal.
- Create a square virtual monitor in FlatVR, then run Resurrected on that virtual display.
A visibly rectangular source can produce distorted or incorrectly scaled views in the headset. Set the square shape before launching the VR mode, and repeat the check if Windows or the game resets the window size.
Launch D2R VR and select first person
- Open
D2R_VR_Settings.exefrom the game folder or the desktop shortcut. - Use the documented menu path Home > Launch Diablo II (D2RLoader). Launching the ordinary game shortcut may bypass the loader and leave the mod inactive.
- Once the game is running, select a view with the function keys. F1 through F4 select the documented views, and F12 cycles through them.
- Press F4 for first person. If you are unsure which mode is active, press F12 until the view changes, then use F4 to return directly to the first-person preview.
First-person mode is not a hidden first-person camera in the original game. D2R VR changes the camera and maps actions to the VR controllers while the underlying Diablo systems remain those of Resurrected.
How first-person controls work
The project describes first person as an early preview. The most important limitation is calibration: weapon placement and aiming may be incorrect for many weapons. Treat the mode as experimental, especially when switching among character classes, weapon types, and attack ranges.
Ranged weapons and spells
Bows and spells use the right trigger. The attack follows the direction of the corresponding hand, so the visual controller orientation matters. If a projectile leaves at an unexpected angle, first check your hand orientation and recenter the view before assuming the game or headset is defective.

Melee attacks
Melee uses a Strike Zone configured through BodyWalk Mapping. Adjust that mapping to define the physical area in which a swing becomes a strike. A poorly placed zone can make a natural-looking swing fail to register or can trigger attacks too easily.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Potions
Potions use reach gestures mapped to the belt. The gesture is handled through the BodyWalk mapping rather than by clicking a conventional belt icon with a mouse.
Menus and utility actions
Controller inputs cover the inventory, map, weapon-set swap, and recentering. Learn the recenter action before entering combat; it is the quickest way to correct a shifted view after changing your seated or standing position.
Weapon adjustment
The README points to a manual Weapon Adjust setting because many weapons are not yet positioned or aimed perfectly in first person. Make small changes, test a basic attack, and repeat for each weapon class you use. A setting that looks correct for a bow may not be correct for a sword or spell focus.
Choose the view that fits your session
| View | Best use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Overhead stereo | Preserving the familiar Diablo battlefield perspective while adding depth | Less physical immersion than the first-person camera. |
| Third person | Seeing the hero and surroundings from behind | Still uses a conventional follow-camera perspective. |
| Mixed-reality floor | Placing the game world on the floor for a tabletop-like presentation | Requires the FlatVR/BodyWalk path for headset use. |
| First person | Using controller-oriented hands, weapons, and attacks | Preview-stage calibration; the project warns that many weapons may be misaligned. |
There is no requirement to play the entire campaign in first person. Switching to overhead or third person can make inventory-heavy or ranged encounters easier, while first person can be used when you want the most physical interaction.

Headset mode versus flat-monitor mode
| Requirement or feature | PC VR headset | Flat monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Headset | Required | Not required |
| BodyWalk and FlatVR | Required by the documented headset setup | Not required |
| Input | Motion controllers for first-person actions | Mouse and keyboard |
| Square virtual display | Use a square game window or FlatVR virtual monitor | A normal game window is sufficient |
| Available views | Overhead, third person, floor/mixed reality, and first person | The project says it can run flat, but the documented VR-specific presentation is intended for a headset |
Flat mode is a practical way to verify that the loader and mod launch before adding headset variables. It does not turn the first-person preview into a normal mouse-and-keyboard first-person game; its distinctive controls are designed around the controller mapping.

The game launches, but no VR view appears
- Confirm that you launched through Home > Launch Diablo II (D2RLoader), not an ordinary desktop or launcher shortcut.
- Check that
D2R_VR_Settings.exeis besideD2R.exeand that the installer targeted the active game directory. - Verify ReShade was installed with add-on support and that Generic Depth is enabled.
- For headset play, confirm that BodyWalk, FlatVR, and the Game Link plugin are installed and running.
The loader fails after a game update
Compare the installed game build with the documented 3.3.93787 and D2RLoader 1.3.1 pairing. The README warns that other builds need their addresses checked. Do not treat a failed launch as proof that the headset, graphics card, or controller is incompatible; the loader-game mismatch is a separate failure mode.
The image looks stretched or incorrectly scaled
Recheck the game window dimensions. Resize the window to a square, or use a square FlatVR virtual monitor, then relaunch. Changing headset resolution alone does not correct a non-square source image.
The view judders or the stereo image is unstable
Recheck the documented video settings: disable Vertical Sync, set the frame cap to 180, and use FXAA or MSAA instead of TAA. The 180 cap is tied to the project’s 90-frames-per-eye explanation, so changing it can alter the intended stereo timing. If performance remains poor, use the game’s normal graphics controls to reduce load while preserving the required anti-aliasing and synchronization choices where possible.
Depth or effects are missing
Generic Depth must be enabled in a ReShade installation that supports add-ons. A conventional ReShade install without that add-on cannot provide the same depth input. Also verify that another overlay or graphics injector has not disabled ReShade.

Weapons do not line up with the hands
This is a documented limitation of the F4 preview. Use the manual Weapon Adjust setting and test each weapon type separately. For melee, inspect Strike Zone in BodyWalk Mapping; for bows and spells, check right-hand direction and recentering.
Controls seem shifted after moving
Use the controller recenter command, then adopt the position in which you intend to play. If the game is tracking correctly but attacks still miss, review BodyWalk’s mappings rather than repeatedly changing the game camera.
Online safety, licensing, and cost
D2R VR is intended for offline single-player only. The project warns that injecting code into the game online can get the account banned. Do not take the mod into Battle.net or any other online mode, and do not interpret successful offline testing as online support.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe project identifies D2R VR as MIT-licensed and says it ships none of Blizzard’s game files. BodyWalk and FlatVR are separate products and are not covered by the D2R VR license, so their own terms apply. The mod itself is described as free, with no paywalls or exclusive builds; the project mentions Patreon as an optional way to support development, not as a requirement for installation.
You still need the legitimate base game and, for headset play, compatible PC VR hardware. The project does not establish a required headset model, a particular retail edition, or a separate purchase price for the mod.
What to expect before committing to a full playthrough
The strongest case for D2R VR is experimentation: it lets you inspect Resurrected’s familiar world in stereo, place it on a virtual floor, or try controller-oriented attacks. The weakest case is expecting a polished, universally calibrated first-person game. The project itself labels F4 as a preview and calls out weapon positioning and aim problems.
Start with a short offline session. Confirm that the loader works, square the display, recenter the headset, test a bow or spell, test a melee weapon, and use the inventory and map controls. If those actions are comfortable, decide whether to continue in first person or switch among the other documented views. Keeping the game offline and retaining a known-compatible build will make future troubleshooting much simpler.
