You can play Diablo II: Resurrected in VR with the community-made D2R VR mod. It adds a stereoscopic overhead view, a trailing third-person camera, a mixed-reality floor diorama, and an experimental controller-driven first-person view. The documented setup targets D2R build 3.3.93787 under D2RLoader 1.3.1, plus ReShade with its Generic Depth add-on and, for headset controls, BodyWalk 1.78 or later with FlatVR and the Game Link plugin. D2R VR is an offline, single-player project; do not inject it into an online game.
This guide follows the project’s official README and repository (accessed October 13, 2026), including its version requirements, controls, settings and warnings.
What D2R VR actually supports
D2R VR is a community mod/plugin for the 3D remaster Diablo II: Resurrected. It is not a VR conversion of the original 2000 release of Diablo II, and it does not include the game’s files. You need your own working D2R installation before adding the mod.
The project exposes four camera modes through the function keys. The first three are documented as practical ways to view and control the game; F4 is explicitly an early preview.

|---|---|---|---|
| F1 | Overhead camera rendered in stereo | The familiar Diablo perspective, but with depth in the headset | Documented playable view |
| F2 | Free camera behind the hero | Third-person exploration with the character in front of you | Documented playable view |
| F3 | The game placed on the floor | A mixed-reality diorama that you can look down on and walk around | Documented playable view |
| F4 | First person, with the hero’s arms following the controllers | Direct controller-based first-person combat | Early preview; weapon position and aim can be wrong |
You can also run the project flat on a monitor with a mouse and keyboard when no headset is connected. That makes it possible to check whether the plugin loads before troubleshooting VR hardware.
Requirements, versions and safety limits
The project’s current documentation is specific about the software combination it supports. Treat the versions below as a compatibility target rather than a guarantee for every later game update.
| Component | Required version or setting | Purpose and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Diablo II: Resurrected | Build 3.3.93787 | The game build named by the README for the documented setup |
| D2RLoader | 1.3.1 | The loader used with the documented game build |
| ReShade | Add-on support enabled | Provides the add-on framework used by the depth setup |
| ReShade add-on | Generic Depth enabled | Supplies the depth information the stereo configuration expects |
| BodyWalk | 1.78 or later | Required for headset play and controller mapping |
| FlatVR | Used with BodyWalk | Provides the flat-game VR environment described by the project |
| BodyWalk Game Link | Enabled | Connects BodyWalk’s controller mapping to the game |
If your game has another build, the README says its memory addresses need to be checked. The plugin reports the address information in its log, so do not assume that a newer or older build will work unchanged.

D2R VR changes the running game by injecting code. The project’s warning is unambiguous:
“Offline single-player only. Injecting code into the game online can get the account banned.”
Use it only for offline single-player sessions. Keep the mod out of online play and do not test it in a mode connected to the game’s online services. The README also states that the project is not made, endorsed or supported by Blizzard Entertainment.

How to install D2R VR
The following order keeps the documented dependencies clear. Names and versions are taken from the project README; installer screens may change as the community project evolves.
- Confirm the game build. Check that your Diablo II: Resurrected installation is build
3.3.93787. If it is a different build, plan to inspect the plugin log for the addresses the project says must be checked. - Prepare D2RLoader. Use D2RLoader
1.3.1with the documented game build. The loader and game version are a pair in the project’s requirements, so changing one without checking the other can prevent the plugin from loading. - Install ReShade with add-on support. The standard ReShade installation must include add-on support for this setup. Enable the Generic Depth add-on; ordinary shader installation without that add-on does not match the README’s stereo requirements.
- Install the headset dependencies. For headset play, install BodyWalk version
1.78or later, then configure FlatVR and BodyWalk’s Game Link plugin. These components provide the controller-to-gamepad path used by the VR modes. - Install the D2R VR project. Follow the ready installer linked from the project’s official repository. Do not expect the installer to supply Diablo II: Resurrected; it installs the community mod around your existing game files.
- Launch the settings program. Start
D2R_VR_Settings.exefrom the same folder asD2R.exe. The README says its settings apply while the game is running, so make changes with D2R active when you are testing a configuration. - Test without a headset if necessary. The project can run flat on a monitor with mouse and keyboard. This is a useful first check for a loader or build problem before adding headset tracking and controller variables.
- Start an offline single-player session only. Once the mod loads, select one of the documented views with F1, F2, F3 or F4. Do not take the injected build online.
Configure the stereo image and headset display
Frame pacing and anti-aliasing
For the documented stereo configuration, the README recommends turning VSync off and setting a frame cap of 180, described as 90 frames per eye. It recommends FXAA or MSAA instead of TAA. These are project settings, not an independent performance benchmark, so your actual frame rate and comfort will depend on your PC, headset and runtime.
The current README allows DLSS to be either on or off and distinguishes how it behaves in stereo. Older snippets that say DLSS must always be disabled do not match the current documentation. If you use DLSS, evaluate the result in the headset rather than applying an obsolete blanket rule.
Make the picture square
For a square headset image, the project suggests running the game windowed and resizing it. An alternative is a square-resolution virtual monitor in FlatVR. The goal is to give the stereo view a square presentation; this is a display-layout recommendation, not a claim that every headset runtime handles window sizing identically.

- Choose a background color in
D2R_VR_Settings.exe. - Use Virtual Desktop passthrough and select that same color as the key color.
- Launch F3 and check that the keyed background reveals the passthrough view around the floor-sized game scene.
This is the configuration described by the project. It is not evidence that every headset, runtime or passthrough system supports the same color-key workflow.
Choosing a view: F1, F2, F3 or F4
F1: stereo overhead
F1 preserves Diablo’s recognizable overhead composition while rendering it in stereo. Choose it when you want the original tactical viewpoint with added depth and the least dramatic change to how the battlefield is framed.
F2: trailing third person
F2 moves the free camera behind the hero. It is a good middle ground when you want to see the character in the world without committing to the direct first-person perspective. The camera is still behind the hero, so combat remains easier to read as a third-person scene than as a weapon-level view.

F3 scales the game into a scene on the floor. You can look down into it and physically move around it, which is the mode most closely associated with the project’s mixed-reality presentation. It requires the passthrough color-key configuration described above.
F4: first-person preview
F4 puts the hero’s arms under controller tracking and maps attacks to VR gestures and buttons. It is the most ambitious mode, but it is not a finished first-person conversion. The project states:
“F4 is an early look, not a finished way to play the game: the weapons are not calibrated yet, so how a weapon sits in the hands and where it aims may be off for many of them.”

Controller mapping
In F1, F2 and F3, BodyWalk maps the VR controllers as an Xbox-style gamepad. The README lists the following actions.
| Action | Input in F1–F3 |
|---|---|
| Walk | Move the left stick |
| D-pad directions | Hold the left grip while moving the left stick |
| Map | Click the left stick |
| Menu | Hold the left stick down |
| Recenter | Hold the right stick down |
Because these modes use gamepad-style mapping, the left-stick and grip combinations are the first controls to check if movement or menu navigation does not respond.
F4 first-person mapping
F4 uses a different interaction model that follows the controllers more directly.
| Action | Input in F4 |
|---|---|
| Ranged attacks and spells | Right trigger |
| Melee attacks | Configured Strike Zone |
| Belt potions | Gestures |
| Inventory | Hold the left stick |
| Map | Click the left stick |
| Swap weapon set | Click the right stick |
The Strike Zone and Weapon Adjust settings matter particularly in F4: one determines how melee input is recognized, while the other is the project’s manual response to weapons that do not line up with the controller or reticle.

- End the session before connecting to any online game mode. The project’s code-injection warning applies even if the VR view itself appears to be working normally.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The plugin does not load
- Recheck the exact D2R build: the documented target is
3.3.93787. - Confirm that D2RLoader is
1.3.1. - If your build differs, inspect the plugin log for the address information the README says must be checked for other builds.
- Verify that the mod was installed from the project’s official repository and that the settings executable is next to
D2R.exe.
The stereo view is missing depth
- Confirm that ReShade was installed with add-on support.
- Check that the Generic Depth add-on is enabled.
- Apply changes through
D2R_VR_Settings.exewhile the game is running.
The headset is visible but the controls do nothing
- Headset play requires BodyWalk
1.78or later, FlatVR and BodyWalk’s Game Link plugin. - For F1–F3, test the documented Xbox-style inputs, including holding the left grip for D-pad directions and holding the right stick down to recenter.
- For F4, remember that spells and ranged attacks use the right trigger, melee uses the Strike Zone, and potion use is gesture-based.
The image is stretched or not square
Run the game windowed and resize it, or use a square-resolution virtual monitor in FlatVR as suggested by the project. The exact result can vary with the headset runtime and display setup.
F3 passthrough shows the wrong background
Match the background color selected in D2R VR Settings to the key color selected for Virtual Desktop passthrough. If your runtime does not provide that color-key path, the project documentation does not establish an alternative universal method.
A first-person weapon points incorrectly
This is a known limitation of F4 rather than proof that your installation failed. The project calls the mode an early preview because many weapons are not calibrated. Use Weapon Adjust for manual correction, or switch to F1, F2 or F3 for a more predictable session.
What to expect from compatibility
The documented setup identifies software versions but does not certify a particular headset model. A PC VR headset is the relevant hardware category, while actual support also depends on BodyWalk, FlatVR, Game Link, ReShade add-on support and your runtime’s passthrough behavior. If you are choosing hardware specifically for this mod, treat headset compatibility as something to verify against those dependencies rather than assuming that any headset with a PC connection will behave identically.
The project’s version warning is equally important: a game update can change the addresses the loader or plugin expects. When the installed build is not 3.3.93787, check the plugin log and the project’s current README before changing files or attempting to play.
Bottom line for VR Diablo players
D2R VR is the community project to use if you want Diablo II: Resurrected in a headset. F1 gives you a stereo version of the classic overhead view, F2 follows the hero from behind, and F3 turns the game into a floor-level mixed-reality diorama. F4 adds a compelling first-person experiment, but its weapon alignment is still unfinished. Build your setup around D2R 3.3.93787, D2RLoader 1.3.1, ReShade with Generic Depth, and BodyWalk 1.78 or newer with FlatVR and Game Link. Keep every session offline and single-player.
