You cannot follow a movie watch order yet. CD PROJEKT RED announced a live-action Cyberpunk project with Anonymous Content on October 5, 2023, but described it as being at a very early stage in an August 29, 2025 investor chat. No release date or confirmed story connection to the game was provided in those official updates.
If you want to enter the setting now, start with Cyberpunk 2077. It is an open-world role-playing game about V, a hired gun in Night City. Your platform, expansion plans and need for continuing updates should determine which edition you buy.

First, correct the movie premise
The “movie” in this question is not a currently watchable film. The announced project is live action and is being developed by CD PROJEKT RED and Anonymous Content. The October 5, 2023 announcement established development, not a finished production, trailer, theatrical date or streaming date.
In an official investor chat on August 29, 2025, CD PROJEKT described the project as being at a very early stage and cautioned that readers should not expect imminent updates. The official material covered here does not provide a release date, cast, director, plot synopsis or statement that the film will retell V’s story.

That changes the practical answer. There is no movie to watch first, and there is no verified game-to-film viewing order. Playing the game can familiarize you with Night City, but it is not officially required preparation for the live-action project. It also cannot currently be described as a way to avoid spoilers for a confirmed film plot, because no such plot has been announced.
Production information can change. Before making a purchase specifically to prepare for a future film, check CD PROJEKT RED’s latest official news for a new status, release timing or explanation of how the project relates to the game.
What you are actually playing
CD PROJEKT RED’s official game catalog describes Cyberpunk 2077 as: “Telling the story of V, a hired gun on the rise, Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world role-playing game set in the most dangerous city of the future.” That is the safest spoiler-light starting point.

You create or direct V and experience a story set in Night City. The PlayStation listing emphasizes that choices and relationships shape the story and world. In other words, the game is not simply a linear film that you watch through; it is an interactive role-playing experience in which your decisions affect what you see and how V’s story develops.
You do not need to know the game’s ending, major characters or mission outcomes to begin. If a future adaptation uses different characters, a different period or a separate storyline, the game may still be useful as setting background without being a scene-by-scene prerequisite.
Choose an edition by hardware and expansion plans
The most important buying questions are which hardware you already own, whether you want the Phantom Liberty expansion and whether access to later patches matters to you. The official material available for this guide does not establish a complete, current price comparison, so check the live store listing for your region before purchasing.

Switch 2: the clearest all-in bundle
For a Switch 2 owner, the Ultimate Edition is the straightforward choice if you want both the original game and Phantom Liberty. CD PROJEKT RED’s June 23, 2025 explanation says it includes the base game, the expansion and every update released since launch.

PlayStation 5: choose it when support and the expansion matter
PlayStation’s official page draws a firm line at November 8, 2022. The PS4 version received its last patch on that date; patches released afterward require PS5. PlayStation also states that PS5 is needed for Phantom Liberty.
If you are deciding between buying the game for an older console or moving to PS5, treat continued patch access and the expansion as separate requirements from simply owning the base game. A PS5 purchase is the appropriate route when both of those features are important.
PlayStation 4: a playable but fixed support state
PS4 remains relevant for someone who already owns that hardware and only wants the base game in the support state it reached by November 8, 2022. It is not the right choice if your plan includes Phantom Liberty or patches released after that date.
Do not buy a PS4 copy assuming that a later download will turn it into the PS5-supported version. Check the store’s version label and upgrade terms for your region instead of relying on a generic product title.
Other platforms: verify the live listing
The sources used for this article do not provide a full cross-platform matrix or current prices. For a platform not covered in the table, confirm three things on its current official store page: that your hardware is supported, whether the listing is the base game or a bundle, and whether Phantom Liberty is included or sold separately.
A spoiler-light way to start playing
Use this sequence if your goal is to learn the setting without treating the game as a mandatory film prequel.
- Set your purpose. Decide whether you want a short introduction to Night City, the complete base-game experience or the base game plus Phantom Liberty. There is no official requirement to finish a particular number of missions before a future film.
- Check your hardware and edition. On Switch 2, verify that you are buying the Ultimate Edition if you want the expansion included. On PlayStation, use PS5 if later patches or Phantom Liberty are priorities. If you are using PS4, accept the November 8, 2022 patch cutoff before buying.
- Install the version shown by your store. Read the edition name, included content and platform label rather than assuming that a similarly named listing contains the same package. Regional store details can differ.
- Begin V’s story in Night City. The game’s central premise is V as a rising hired gun. You can approach it without reading plot summaries, character guides or ending explanations.
- Make choices naturally. Because choices and relationships shape the story and world, playing without a detailed spoiler guide gives you a better sense of the role-playing structure. There is no confirmed film plot that you need to preserve or protect.
- Add the expansion only if it matches your plan. Phantom Liberty is optional from the standpoint of understanding the announced live-action project. It is included in the Switch 2 Ultimate Edition and requires PS5 on PlayStation.
- Stop at the level of familiarity you want. A setting primer does not require completing every activity. Continue into the broader story if you want a deeper relationship with Night City, or stop once you understand the world and tone.
How much of the game should you play?
No official source gives a required playtime or says that the live-action project adapts a particular section of the game. Choose a scope based on your own objective.

What Phantom Liberty changes in your buying decision
Phantom Liberty is the major expansion named in the platform guidance. The Switch 2 Ultimate Edition bundles it with the base game and the updates released since launch. On PlayStation, the official listing says PS5 is required.
The available announcements do not establish that the live-action project adapts Phantom Liberty, references its characters or expects viewers to know its events. Treat it as additional game content, not as a confirmed chapter of a movie-preparation sequence.
If you own PS4, this is the clearest incompatibility in the buying decision: the platform page says the expansion is unavailable there. If you want it, plan around PS5 or a platform whose current store listing explicitly includes it.

The November 8, 2022 PS4 patch date is more than a technical footnote. It tells you which support branch you are choosing. PS4 stops at that patch state, while later patches require PS5. The same platform information also ties Phantom Liberty to PS5.
Before purchasing an inexpensive older-console listing, ask whether the lower price is worth losing later patches and the expansion. If you already own PS4 and only want to sample the base game, the older version may meet that narrower goal. If you want the continuing supported version, choose hardware and an edition that the store identifies as current.
Optional extras: rewards and community mods
Owner rewards
The official Cyberpunk.net rewards page offers account-based digital and in-game goodies to owners. These extras are optional and are not needed to understand V, Night City or the announced live-action project. If you want them, use the official rewards instructions and check which edition or ownership verification they require.
Community modifications
The official modding-support guide explains how community mods work and explicitly says CD PROJEKT RED does not review them. That distinction matters: a mod can change the game, but it is not an official part of the movie project or a required way to experience the setting.
Use mods only after you are comfortable with the unmodified game and have checked the current installation guidance for your platform. Keep in mind that community content can be incompatible with updates or with other modifications. If your primary goal is a clean introduction before a future film, skip mods until you know exactly what change you want.

What the historical sales figures tell you
CD PROJEKT reported more than 25 million copies sold for the Cyberpunk 2077 base game and more than 3 million copies of Phantom Liberty in its October 5, 2023 Investor Day highlights. Those are historical figures reported in 2023, not current 2026 totals. They show the game and expansion had substantial reach, but they do not establish what a future film will adapt or when it will arrive.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Waiting for a movie that is not available
Mistake: Searching for a viewing order or delaying the game until a release date appears.
Fix: Treat the live-action project as announced development. Start the game now only if you want the setting or interactive story; do not expect a film to be available for comparison.

Assuming the film will retell the game
Mistake: Looking up the game’s ending to “prepare” for a presumed adaptation.
Fix: No official plot or adaptation relationship has been established in the status covered here. Play spoiler-free if that is more enjoyable, and wait for a confirmed synopsis before drawing connections.
Buying PS4 for an expansion it cannot run
Mistake: Assuming every PlayStation copy has access to Phantom Liberty and later patches.
Fix: The PS4 version stopped receiving patches after November 8, 2022, and PlayStation says PS5 is required for the expansion and later patches.

Using old sales numbers as current totals
Mistake: Presenting the 2023 figures as today’s sales.
Fix: Label them as historical October 2023 reports and do not use them to forecast the film’s audience or release.
When a film date is eventually announced
Revisit your play plan only after an official announcement provides enough information to make a meaningful choice. Check whether the project is described as an adaptation, a new story in the same universe or something else entirely. Then look for a confirmed release date, continuity statement and spoiler-sensitive synopsis.
If it is a separate story, your existing game knowledge may be useful atmosphere rather than required homework. If it is explicitly tied to V’s story, you can decide whether to finish the relevant game content first—but that decision should be based on the confirmed film information, not on the 2023 development announcement.

Buy and play Cyberpunk 2077 because you want an interactive tour of Night City, not because a movie is currently waiting for you. Choose Switch 2 Ultimate Edition for the documented all-in bundle, choose PS5 when later patches or Phantom Liberty matter, and choose PS4 only if the older support state meets your needs. There is no verified movie viewing order to follow yet.
