Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted CS 1.6 servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The simplest way to play Counter-Strike 1.6 with friends in 2026 is to use the in-game Create Server listen server. It works immediately for players on the same home or campus network. Friends in different homes need an internet-reachable server, firewall permission and usually UDP port forwarding. For a game that should remain online without the host playing, run a standalone Half-Life Dedicated Server (HLDS).
This guide covers all three setups, the exact connection steps, port and router requirements, multiple PCs behind one router, security settings and fixes for the problems that stop friends from joining.

Choose the right CS 1.6 multiplayer setup
Your network determines which hosting method is practical. Use this comparison before changing router settings.
| Situation | Best method | Host actions | How friends connect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyone is on the same home, school or campus LAN | In-game Create Server (listen server) | Start a map, allow the game through the local firewall and share the private address if discovery fails | Find Servers → LAN, or connect private-ip:port |
| Friends are in different homes | Internet listen server or dedicated HLDS | Set internet mode, choose a password, allow the server through the firewall and forward the server port when the router requires it | Add the host’s public IP and port under Steam’s server Favorites, or use the console connect command |
| You want a persistent server or the host should not play | Standalone Half-Life Dedicated Server | Install GoldSource server software, configure the map, player limit, password and port, then leave the process running | Connect to the server’s public IP and port |
Valve describes listen servers as suitable for small LAN games rather than public servers. Its dedicated-server documentation treats standalone HLDS as the advanced option for internet hosting of GoldSource games such as Counter-Strike.
#1 Best Overall
- Single-elimination, team-based online shooter
- Completely overhauled with better graphics, new characters, items, and environments
- Package includes Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Day of Defeat: Source
- Real-world physics adds depth the gameplay
- Internet connection required for online play
A listen server is easiest because the host launches the game and plays in the same process. The trade-off is that the match ends when the host exits or loses connection. HLDS needs more setup but can stay online independently, making it better for a regular weekly session. A hosted server removes router administration from your home, but provider availability, support and current pricing vary by country and should be checked before purchase.
What everyone needs before starting
- A legitimate Steam installation of Counter-Strike 1.6 (or the Counter-Strike 1 Anthology product) on every playing PC.
- The same game release and compatible map files. A player missing the server’s map will be unable to load that match.
- A working local network for LAN play, or an internet connection for remote play.
- Permission to change the host computer’s firewall and, for most home internet connections, the router.
- A private password if the match is only for your group.
There is no single universal player-count or latency guarantee for every setup. Your practical limit depends on the host computer, upload connection, map and number of clients. Keep the server private while testing, then increase the player limit only if the host remains stable.

How to play CS 1.6 over a LAN
A listen server is the fastest arrangement when every computer is attached to the same router or campus network. The host’s game process runs the server while the host plays.
Host: create the LAN server
- Install and launch Counter-Strike 1.6.
- Choose New Game or Create Server from the main menu.
- Select the map, set the player limit and start the server.
- When Windows asks, allow
hl.exeor Counter-Strike through the private-network firewall. Do not expose it to public networks unless you intentionally need internet players. - Set a server password if you want a closed session, then send that password to the group privately.
Use a private network profile for a home or trusted campus network. A public-network firewall profile is intentionally stricter; changing it merely to make discovery work can expose more services than necessary.
Friends: join through LAN discovery
- Open Find Servers → LAN on each friend’s PC.
- Select the host’s server and enter the password when prompted.
- If the server does not appear, confirm that every PC is on the same IP subnet and that the host firewall allows the game.
Join manually when discovery fails
On the host, find the private IPv4 address shown by the operating system’s network details (often an address beginning with 192.168., 10. or 172.16. through 172.31.). Friends can open the developer console and run:
Recommended Free Tools
connect 192.168.x.x:27015
Replace the address with the host’s actual private IP and replace 27015 if the server is using another port. The running server configuration is authoritative.
Guest Wi-Fi frequently isolates wireless clients, so a phone, laptop and desktop can appear to use the same router while still being unable to communicate. Move everyone to the main LAN, use Ethernet, or ask the network administrator to permit client-to-client traffic. On a school or workplace network, you may not have permission to change firewall or router rules; use the network’s approved gaming segment instead.

How to play CS 1.6 online with friends in different homes
Remote players cannot normally reach a listen server that is visible only inside your LAN. The host must make an internet server reachable and keep it protected with a password.
1. Start the server in internet mode
Create the match with the in-game internet option, or run a dedicated server with sv_lan 0. A server left in LAN mode will not accept ordinary internet connections.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Give the host computer a stable local address
Router forwarding rules point to a private LAN address. Reserve the host’s address in the router’s DHCP settings, or configure a static address according to your network administrator’s plan. Without a stable address, a reboot can send the forwarding rule to the wrong computer.
3. Forward the server’s UDP port
Sign in to the router, open its port-forwarding section and create a rule that sends the server’s UDP port to the host computer’s private address. 27015 is the common/default starting port documented in Valve’s dedicated-server setup, but a particular game build or server wrapper may use another port. Check the server console or configuration and forward the port that is actually listening.
Do not assume that forwarding TCP alone is sufficient; the standard game traffic is UDP. If you deliberately changed the server port, tell every friend to use that same value. On some routers, the field is labelled “external” and “internal” port; use the same number in both fields unless your server documentation says otherwise.
4. Allow the server through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the game or server executable and for the selected UDP port. Apply it to the appropriate private network profile. A router rule cannot help if the operating system silently drops the packet. If Windows presents separate checkboxes for private and public networks, select only the profile the host actually uses.
5. Share the public address privately
Send friends the public IP address shown by the host’s internet connection and the port, for example:
connect 198.51.100.20:27015
Friends using Steam’s browser can open Favorites → Add server by IP address, enter the same address and port, and then launch the game from the resulting entry. A DNS name can be used instead of a changing public IP, but it must point to the current connection. Never post a private match address and password in a public forum unless you want strangers to find it.
Rank #3
6. Keep the server private
Set a strong player password and share it only with the group. Valve specifically describes a player password as useful when you want to play only with friends. Avoid publishing the address in open server lists unless you intend to operate a public server. Remove the forwarding rule after the session if you do not plan to host again.
Which port does CS 1.6 use?
UDP 27015 is the normal starting point. Valve’s server interface documents 27015 as the default UDP port, and common CS 1.6 hosting instructions use it for internet connections. It is not a universal guarantee: the active server configuration, launch option or hosting wrapper can override it.
- Check the server console for the listening port.
- Forward that exact UDP port from the router to the host’s stable private address.
- Allow the same port in the host firewall.
- Give friends the public IP plus
:port. - If you change the port, update the router rule and every connection instruction.
Do not test only from inside the same home. Some routers lack NAT loopback (also called hairpin NAT), so a connection to your own public address can fail even while outside players can connect. Test from a phone hotspot or another genuinely remote network.
Several players behind one home router
When multiple CS 1.6 clients share one router, they may need different Steam clientport values. Valve documents the default as 27005 and permits distinct values from 27005 through 27032.
Assign a unique client port
- Choose a different number in that documented range for each PC, such as
27005,27006and27007. - Open the Steam game launch options for Counter-Strike 1.6.
- Add the option for that computer, for example
-clientport 27006. - Restart the game and test the server list and connection again.
Use a different value on each client, not a different value for every match. This is most useful when one of several local players disappears from the server list, cannot connect, or appears to replace another client. Do not reuse one value on two machines while diagnosing the problem; assign, record and keep each PC’s value stable.
Run a persistent server with Half-Life Dedicated Server
Choose standalone HLDS when the server should remain available without a player hosting from inside the game, or when you need more administrative control. It is the advanced GoldSource route; a small private group does not need to make the server public.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Install and configure HLDS
- Install the legitimate Half-Life Dedicated Server software and the Counter-Strike game files.
- Allow the server executable through the operating system firewall.
- Reserve a stable private LAN address for the machine.
- Forward the chosen UDP port (27015 is the usual starting value) from the router to that address.
- Set a password and decide the map and maximum player count before starting.
Typical GoldSource launch pattern
A common launch pattern is:
hlds.exe -game cstrike +sv_lan 0 +map <map_name> +maxplayers <number> -port 27015
Replace the angle-bracket values with the map and player limit you intend to use. The command illustrates the important settings: Counter-Strike’s cstrike game directory, internet mode through sv_lan 0, a starting map, a player limit and the UDP port. The server’s console output remains the final authority on whether it started successfully and which port it is listening on.

Operate a private HLDS server
- Keep a password configured and distribute it through your private group chat.
- Leave the server unlisted where the server software permits that choice.
- Monitor the console for map errors, rejected passwords and connection attempts.
- Stop the process cleanly when finished and remove the router rule if you no longer need remote access.
HLDS is appropriate when the host should be able to leave the game, but it is not mandatory for a one-evening match. If administration becomes too time-consuming, a managed CS 1.6 host is an alternative; compare its supported game build, map controls, player slots, location, cancellation terms and current price rather than choosing on headline cost alone.
If port forwarding is impossible
Some internet providers place customers behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), and some routers or mobile connections do not permit inbound rules. In that situation, a direct public-IP connection will not work even when the game and firewall are configured correctly.
Your alternatives are:
- Ask the ISP whether a public IPv4 address or an inbound-capable plan is available.
- Run the server on a machine or hosted service with an internet-reachable address.
- Use a reputable VPN or relay service that supports LAN-style game traffic and verify its privacy, compatibility and current cost before relying on it.
- Move the host role to a friend whose connection accepts inbound UDP.
A current Steam listing for Porthole: Local Port Sharing advertises exposing LAN-only games over the internet without router port forwarding or a public IP, using a share code or Steam friends list. It is a third-party relay, not a Valve feature or a guaranteed CS 1.6 solution. Check that it supports your exact game build, understand what traffic it relays, review privacy terms and confirm the current price before buying. A relay is a workaround for NAT limitations, not a replacement for checking the game’s own settings.

The server is not visible on LAN
- Confirm every PC is connected to the same router and subnet; guest Wi-Fi networks often isolate clients.
- Use Find Servers → LAN, not the internet tab.
- Allow
hl.exeor the server executable through the private-network firewall. - Try the host’s private IPv4 address with
connect.
Remote friends time out
- Verify that they are using the current public IP, not the host’s private address.
- Confirm the router forwards UDP, targets the correct host address and uses the server’s actual port.
- Check that
sv_lan 0is active for an internet server. - Test from a phone hotspot or another external network.
- Ask the ISP whether CGNAT or inbound-port blocking is present.
Only one of several home PCs can connect
Assign each client a unique -clientport value between 27005 and 27032, restart the clients and test again.
Friends join and are immediately kicked
- Check that they entered the correct password.
- Confirm the server’s maximum-player setting has not been reached.
- Make sure every player has the required map and a compatible game installation.
- Read the server console for the exact rejection message.
Players experience high latency
- Use a wired connection for the host when possible.
- Stop large uploads, cloud synchronization and video streams during the match.
- Choose a host geographically close to most players.
- If the host’s connection remains unstable, move the server to another player’s network or a managed server.
The host cannot join its own public address
Use the host’s private LAN address from inside the home network. The router may not support NAT loopback even though the forwarding rule works for friends outside the house.
Friends see the server but cannot load the map
Confirm that everyone has the same map name and compatible files. A missing or mismatched map can stop loading even when the network path, password and player slots are correct. Change to a standard map as a test before troubleshooting the router again.
Recommended setup for most groups
For a same-house or campus session, use Create Server, the LAN tab and a private password. For friends in different homes, use an internet listen server if the host is comfortable forwarding UDP 27015; otherwise use HLDS on a machine that can stay online. If the ISP uses CGNAT or the router cannot forward ports, use a compatible relay/VPN solution or move hosting to a connection with an inbound-capable public address.
Keep the server passworded, forward only the port you actually use, and remove the forwarding rule when the private session is over. Those choices provide the simplest path from installation to a working friends-only match without exposing an unnecessary public server.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I play CS 1.6 with friends online?
Start an internet listen server or HLDS with sv_lan 0, allow it through the host firewall, forward its UDP port (usually 27015) to the host’s stable private address, and send friends the public IP, port and password. If your ISP uses CGNAT, move the server to an inbound-capable connection or use a compatible relay.

Use Create Server for a short session or standalone HLDS for a persistent server. Set a player password, choose the map and player limit, allow the executable through the firewall and avoid publishing the address publicly.
Can we play CS 1.6 over LAN without port forwarding?
Yes. Put every PC on the same trusted LAN, start Create Server and use Find Servers → LAN. Port forwarding is for friends connecting from outside your router.
What port does CS 1.6 use?
UDP 27015 is the common Valve-documented default, but the active server configuration is authoritative. Check the console, forward that exact UDP port and include it in the address friends use.
How do I connect to my friend’s CS 1.6 server?
On the same LAN, use Find Servers → LAN or connect private-ip:port. From another home, add the public IP and port in Steam Favorites or run connect public-ip:port, then enter the server password.

Why can only one PC behind our router join?
Assign each CS 1.6 client a different Steam -clientport value. Valve documents the range 27005–27032; restart each game after changing its launch option.
Why does my own public IP fail while friends can connect?
Your router may not support NAT loopback (hairpin NAT). Test from a phone hotspot or another outside network, and use the host’s private LAN address when the host joins locally.
Do I need HLDS for a private game?
No. Create Server is sufficient for a small LAN or one-off session. HLDS is useful when the server should continue running without the host’s game client or when you want additional administration.
The Bottom Line
For LAN play, choose Create Server. For friends in different homes, use an internet server with sv_lan 0, firewall permission, a password and the correct UDP port—normally 27015. Use HLDS for a persistent match, and switch to a relay, VPN or different host when CGNAT prevents inbound connections.
