Yes—Clive Barker’s Undying works on a current Windows PC. The least complicated route is the current GOG edition, which is listed for Windows 10 and newer, marked “Windows 11 verified,” DRM-free, playable offline, and installable without the Galaxy client. Install and launch that unmodified version once. If you want widescreen or 4K resolutions, subtitles, controller support, faster loading, restored content, or a modern renderer, install the community Undying Renewal project in the game folder and start the game through its launcher.
The sequence matters: establish a clean, working base installation first, then add Renewal. That gives you a known-good fallback if a renderer, localization patch, or optional gameplay change causes trouble.
What you need to play Undying today
Clive Barker’s Undying was released in 2001. Modern Windows compatibility is easiest with the current GOG release rather than an old disc installation. GOG’s current product page lists Windows 10 and newer, identifies the game as “Windows 11 verified,” and describes the release as DRM-free. You can install it offline and do not need the Galaxy client.

GOG’s product page currently shows a 4.5/5 rating from 423 reviews (snapshot checked October 16, 2026) and uses the statement “This game is 2026-ready.” The same listing publishes these minimum requirements:

Because the original game is a 32-bit Windows title, the limiting factor is usually compatibility between old rendering code and a modern driver—not raw GPU power.
Choose the setup that matches your goal

Install and verify the clean GOG version
Do this before installing any patch. A first launch confirms that Windows can run the store release and gives you a fallback directory that has not been modified.

- Install it to a folder you can access. A short, simple path such as a dedicated games directory is easier to work with than a deeply nested location. The important requirement is that you can identify the folder containing the game executable.
- Launch the unmodified game once. Reach the main menu, then quit normally. This creates or confirms the game’s configuration files and proves that the base files are intact.
- Record the working state. Note the installation folder and keep the original installer or offline backup. If a later mod configuration fails, you can remove or rename the modified folder and restore this clean copy.
Do not copy Renewal files into the directory before this first test. Troubleshooting is much faster when you know whether a failure belongs to the original release or the modification.

Install Undying Renewal for modern features
Undying Renewal is the practical modernization layer for this game. Its documented feature set includes widescreen resolutions up to 4K, subtitles, controller support, a Vulkan renderer, reduced loading times, restored cut content, multiplayer, and optional quality-of-life changes. It is not required to launch the GOG edition; it is the route to modern presentation and input features.
Before you begin
- Complete the clean GOG installation and first launch described above.
- Use the English version of the game. Renewal’s documentation states that its main package requires the English release; localization patches are supplied separately.
- Close the game and any launcher before copying files.
- Keep a backup or be prepared to reinstall the clean GOG version if you need to roll back.
Copy the project into the game folder
- Download the current Undying Renewal archive from the project’s ModDB page.
- Open the archive and extract its contents directly into the folder that contains the GOG installation. Do not create an extra nested folder if the archive already contains the launcher and mod files at its root.
- Locate
UndyingLauncherin that folder and run it. - Start the launcher at least once before trying to play. The project notes that the launcher must patch the game during its first run.
- Click Play in the launcher. Use this launcher for the patched installation rather than starting the original executable directly.
If you need a non-English interface or subtitles, install the appropriate localization patch after the main English package. Keep the localization files associated with the same Renewal version; mixing files from different releases can produce missing text or a failure to start.
Set resolution, subtitles, input, and optional content
Widescreen and 4K
Renewal exposes modern display modes, including widescreen formats and resolutions up to 4K. Select the mode your monitor actually supports, then apply it through the Renewal launcher or the in-game settings it opens. A 4K option changes the output resolution; it does not turn the original textures into 4K assets. If a mode is missing, first confirm that Windows is detecting the monitor at that resolution and that you launched through Renewal rather than the untouched executable.

Subtitles
Subtitles are a Renewal feature rather than a requirement of the base GOG release. Enable them in the launcher’s options before starting. If text is absent after installing a localization patch, verify that the patch matches the English base package and the installed Renewal files.

Controller support
The original keyboard-and-mouse controls remain valid. Renewal adds controller support, so connect a standard USB PC controller before starting the launcher and select the available controller settings. If the game does not detect it, test the controller in Windows first, disconnect other gamepads, and restart the launcher after the device is recognized. Avoid changing several input-remapping layers at once; determine whether the issue is Windows detection, the launcher, or the in-game binding.
Restored content, multiplayer, and quality-of-life changes
Renewal documents restored cut content, multiplayer, and optional quality-of-life changes in addition to its display and input features. These options can alter the experience and are not needed for a preservation-focused playthrough. Enable them selectively in the launcher so you know which change is responsible if behavior differs from the original game.
Choose a rendering path
The original renderer may be all you need. If it produces an unusable image or fails on your driver, the modernisation ecosystem documents alternatives. Change only one renderer at a time and keep notes about the setting that worked.

PCGamingWiki also notes that the 32-bit executable may need the Large Address Aware flag on modern machines. Treat that as a troubleshooting option, not a mandatory installation step. Apply it only after the clean game or Renewal configuration demonstrates a problem that the flag is intended to address, and keep an untouched copy so you can undo the change.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
The game does nothing when started
- Launch the GOG installation before adding Renewal. If the clean copy also fails, the problem is not caused by the mod.
- Confirm that you are running the game from the installed folder rather than an incomplete shortcut to an old disc or backup location.
- Run the Renewal launcher once so it can perform its required patching step, then use its Play button.
- Temporarily remove overlays, injectors, and other wrappers. Reintroduce them only after the game starts normally.
The screen is black, distorted, or limited to an unusable resolution
- Return to the original renderer and test the clean GOG installation.
- If the base game works but Renewal does not, switch to one documented alternative—dgVoodoo2 or Vulkan—rather than installing several at once.
- Check Windows display scaling and the monitor’s supported modes. Select a standard resolution first, then move to widescreen or 4K.
- Do not interpret a successful launch at 4K as proof that every visual element is rendered from 4K assets; the setting controls output resolution.
Loading is unusually slow or the mod’s changes are missing
Start from the Renewal launcher, not the original executable. Confirm that the archive was extracted into the folder containing the game files rather than into a second directory. If features still do not appear, restore the clean copy and repeat the extraction with the English package before applying any localization files.
The controller is not recognized
- Verify that Windows sees the USB controller before launching the game.
- Close and reopen UndyingLauncher after connecting the controller.
- Disconnect additional controllers and virtual input devices temporarily.
- Use keyboard and mouse to reach the launcher and confirm that controller support is enabled.
Text or voices are missing after localization
Renewal’s main package requires the English version. A localization patch is an additional layer, not a replacement for that requirement. Remove the localization files, confirm that the English Renewal setup works, then apply the matching language patch again. Do not combine patches intended for different project versions.
The game crashes after changing memory or renderer settings
Undo the last change first. Restore the original renderer, remove the Large Address Aware modification if you applied it, and test the clean or freshly reinstalled GOG copy. Once it works, add Renewal and then reapply a single troubleshooting option. This staged approach identifies the failing layer instead of leaving several unknown changes in place.

How to roll back safely
Renewal is installed by adding files to the game directory, so the most reliable rollback is a clean directory rather than trying to guess which individual files belong to the mod.

- Save personal configuration or game-save files if you want to keep them.
- Rename the modified game folder so it is clearly identifiable.
- Install or restore the untouched GOG release in a new folder.
- Launch the clean copy once and verify that it reaches the main menu.
- Reinstall the same Renewal version only after the base copy is confirmed.
Keep the Renewal archive and any localization patch together with the date you downloaded them. Community-maintained projects can change version and compatibility details, so a setup that works today may require updated files after a future Windows or driver change.
A practical installation recipe
For most Windows 10 and 11 players, the following order gives the best balance between reliability and modern features:
- Install the current GOG edition, which is listed for Windows 10+, marked Windows 11 verified, DRM-free, and usable offline without Galaxy.
- Launch the untouched game once and quit from the main menu.
- Back up or retain the clean installation.
- Extract the English Undying Renewal package into the game folder.
- Run UndyingLauncher once so it patches the installation.
- Choose widescreen or 4K, subtitles, controller support, and any optional content you actually want.
- Start the game with the launcher.
- Only if you encounter a specific rendering or memory problem, test one documented alternative such as dgVoodoo2, Vulkan, or the Large Address Aware flag.
This setup preserves a known-good original while giving you a supported path to modern resolutions, contemporary input, subtitles, faster loading, and alternative rendering. It also keeps troubleshooting reversible: if a new option breaks the game, return to the clean GOG folder and rebuild the modded configuration one change at a time.
