Yes. Several of Square Enix’s most important 1980s and 1990s role-playing games can be played on current hardware, but the right edition depends on whether you value original-style graphics, rebuilt presentation, tactical systems, or modern conveniences. Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster is the broadest collection for an early-series tour; Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake rebuilds a foundational command RPG; Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles combines classic and enhanced modes; and Octopath Traveler delivers newer HD-2D production built around classic ideas.

Use the platform table first, then choose between a pixel remaster, an HD-2D remake, a fully modern remake, or an original-style PC port. Store listings, physical editions, and regional availability can differ by title, so verify the exact edition for your console or PC before buying.

Quick recommendations by the experience you want

  • The broadest tour of early Final Fantasy: Choose Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster. It presents all six games in one updated 2D style and adds optional conveniences such as auto-battle.
  • A traditional, self-contained command RPG: Choose Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. It keeps party building and turn-based commands at the center while rebuilding the world in HD-2D.
  • Grid-based strategy and job customization: Choose Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles. Its enhanced and classic versions let you decide how much modernization you want.
  • Classic systems with a newer game structure: Choose Octopath Traveler. It uses HD-2D visuals and party-based combat without requiring you to begin with an older release.
  • A real-time, cinematic reinterpretation: Choose Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade. It is part of a three-game remake project and is structurally different from the 1997 original.
  • An original-style PC presentation: Choose the Windows Steam version of Chrono Trigger if you specifically want keyboard and mouse support, autosave, higher-resolution graphics, and later interface and widescreen improvements.

Remaster, HD-2D remake or original PC port?

Pixel remasters preserve the basic game while removing friction

A pixel remaster starts from the original 2D design rather than rebuilding the game as a modern 3D production. In the Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster collection, the artwork is updated but remains recognizably pixel based, the music is rearranged, and the interface is redesigned for current screens. Optional features such as auto-battle and font choices let you reduce repetitive input without requiring you to use those aids.

#1 Best Overall
DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake (NSW)
  • DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake is a stunning reimagining of the beloved masterpiece and narrative beginning to The Erdrick Trilogy – the first three games of the mainline DRAGON QUEST series. Featuring vibrant HD-2D graphics, new and modernized features, and a refined narrative, players are invited to set out on an epic fantasy adventure to save the world from a dark evil.
  • A fully modernized remake of the original: Stunning HD-2D visuals fuse pixel art with 3D graphics, bringing players into the world of DRAGON QUEST III like never before, along with an improved and modernized UI, and other quality of life improvements.
  • Traditional DRAGON QUEST style battles: A refined take on the classic turn-based battle system, featuring new animations, additional improvements such as an adjustable battle speed, an auto-battle setting, and more.
  • Immersive world: Deep exploration of a vast world map with an abundance of rich and captivating locations to discover, challenging players to overcome many unexpected encounters during the journey.
  • Experience a timeless musical score: An immersive, authentic, and diverse musical composition that captures the timeless essence and magic of the DRAGON QUEST universe.

This is usually the best compromise for someone who wants to follow the historical progression of a series but does not want to manage every inconvenience of an old release. It also gives you one purchasing decision for six numbered games instead of hunting for separate legacy versions.

HD-2D remakes rebuild the scene around familiar rules

An HD-2D remake keeps the visual language of sprites, tile maps and turn-based commands while adding modern lighting, depth and effects. Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is explicitly presented as a reimagining, so it is not simply an emulated copy with a sharper image. The appeal is a classic ruleset with a presentation designed for current displays.

Choose this route when you want the identity of an older RPG but prefer a rebuilt world, clearer modern production values and a release designed for current consoles and PC storefronts.

Original-style ports are for authenticity and specific PC features

An original-style port aims to keep the underlying release recognizable while adapting it to contemporary hardware. The Windows Steam version of Chrono Trigger is the clearest example in this group: it adds keyboard and mouse support, autosave, higher-resolution graphics, and subsequent interface and widescreen improvements. It is not evidence that the game has a native version on every current console, so do not assume console availability from the existence of a PC listing.

Fully modern remakes change more than the graphics

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade takes the most aggressive approach. It is a real-time reinterpretation and one part of a three-game remake project, not a pixel-faithful presentation of the 1997 game. Select it when you want modern combat and production rather than a historical version of the original design.

Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster: the easiest starting point for the early series

The collection unifies the first six Final Fantasy games under one modern presentation. Updated 2D pixel graphics retain the series’ early visual identity, while rearranged soundtracks and a modern interface make the games easier to approach on current displays. Auto-battle is available as an option, and font choices provide another way to tailor the presentation.

Which game should you start with?

  • Start with Final Fantasy I if you want to watch the formula develop from its earliest form and experience the series chronologically.
  • Start with Final Fantasy IV if you want a more focused, story-forward introduction to the middle of the collection.
  • Start with Final Fantasy VI if you want a story-driven ensemble cast and a later 2D entry that shows how far the original formula evolved.

You do not need to play all six in order to understand them. They are separate numbered adventures, so your choice can be based on the style of story and systems you prefer.

How to use its convenience features

Leave auto-battle disabled during unfamiliar encounters so you can learn enemy patterns and resource management. Turn it on for routine fights once you know the commands you want repeated. Font selection is a presentation choice rather than a difficulty setting; choose the most readable option for your display instead of treating the default as mandatory. The rearranged soundtrack is similarly optional in spirit: it modernizes the audio while preserving the role of music in each game.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake: a traditional command RPG rebuilt for today

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is a reimagining of a formative classic. Its foundation is traditional turn-based command combat and party building, but its world is rendered in HD-2D rather than the original-era presentation. That makes it a strong choice if you want a self-contained adventure with recognizable classic structure without beginning with an unmodified older release.

Who should choose it?

  • Choose it for classic party decisions: You direct a group rather than controlling a single action-game character, making preparation and command selection central.
  • Choose it for a single complete adventure: Unlike a collection, this is one main journey, so you can commit to one setting and progression path.
  • Choose it for HD-2D presentation: You get sprite-based characters and environments combined with modern depth, lighting and effects.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake continues the trilogy on the same broad family of platforms. Treat each product as its own purchase and check the individual storefront listing rather than assuming that owning one automatically grants the others.

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles: two ways to play a tactical classic

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles is designed for players who want grid-based battles, job customization and a political story rather than a conventional linear party RPG. It includes both an enhanced version and a classic version, allowing you to choose between modernization and a closer-to-original experience.

Use classic mode when preservation is the priority

Classic mode is the appropriate choice when you want the original feel and do not want updated presentation elements to mediate the experience. It is also useful for players who have historical curiosity about how the tactical RPG originally played.

Use enhanced mode when you want readability and speed

Enhanced mode adds an updated interface, revised dialogue and voice acting. Fast-forward reduces the time spent watching repeated battle animations, while autosave offers additional protection against losing progress. These features matter more in a tactical game because individual battles can take longer and a poor outcome may otherwise require a large amount of replay.

Switch between the two modes according to your goal: classic for archival authenticity, enhanced for a first playthrough where you want the clearest interface and modern conveniences.

Octopath Traveler: a newer entry point for classic-style systems

Octopath Traveler is not a port of a 1980s or 1990s game. It is a newer title built around familiar ideas: party-based combat, turn planning, exploration and a deliberately retro-inspired visual style. Its HD-2D presentation makes it a practical recommendation for readers who want the look and rhythm of classic role-playing games without accepting the technical limitations of an older release.

Why its broad platform coverage matters

Because it is available across current PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC/Steam families, it can be the safest recommendation when someone has not yet specified hardware. You still need to verify whether the storefront lists the exact console generation you own, especially when a listing groups Xbox One with Xbox Series or PS4 with PS5.

When to choose it instead of a remaster

Choose Octopath Traveler when you want a newly designed game with classic-inspired mechanics. Choose a Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster when you specifically want the original numbered adventures and their historical context. The two options overlap in visual appeal but answer different questions.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade: the modern real-time route

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is for players who want a contemporary, real-time interpretation rather than a pixel remaster or an original-style port. Square Enix describes it as part of a three-game remake project. Its structure, combat and presentation therefore differ from the 1997 release, even though both draw from the same source material.

Buy it when your priority is modern action-oriented presentation and cinematic staging. Do not buy it expecting a compact recreation of the original game’s format or a substitute for a version that preserves the 1997 design.

Chrono Trigger and the importance of checking catalog gaps

The Windows Steam version of Chrono Trigger demonstrates how a classic can remain accessible on PC through a technically updated port. Keyboard and mouse support, autosave, higher-resolution graphics, interface improvements and widescreen support make it more practical on a modern computer than an untouched legacy build.

However, the available information does not establish a current native release on every modern console. A Steam listing should therefore lead to a PC recommendation, not a claim that the same game is available on PlayStation, Xbox or Switch. For catalog gaps like this, search the exact title in your console’s store and confirm that the product page names your hardware before planning a purchase.

How to verify an edition before you buy

  1. Identify your exact hardware. Write down the platform and generation, such as PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, Steam Deck or Windows PC. A series-level statement is not a guarantee for every generation.
  2. Search the complete title. Include the edition name, such as Pixel Remaster, HD-2D Remake, Intergrade or The Ivalice Chronicles. This prevents an original release, remake and collection from being confused.
  3. Read the platform line on the product page. Confirm that your hardware is named. Pay attention to listings that group generations together, because the supported version may be narrower than the series label suggests.
  4. Check whether the listing is digital or boxed. Physical and digital formats vary by title and region. A boxed edition mentioned elsewhere may not be stocked in your country or may belong to a different platform generation.
  5. Confirm the included mode or collection contents. For Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles, verify that the listing includes both enhanced and classic versions. For Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster, verify whether you are buying the collection or an individual game listing.
  6. Choose the presentation deliberately. Select pixel remaster for updated 2D authenticity, HD-2D remake for a rebuilt classic, a modern remake for real-time reinterpretation, or an original-style PC port for legacy presentation with technical updates.
  7. Install and check controls before committing to a long playthrough. On PC, confirm that the input method shown by the product information matches your plan. The Windows Chrono Trigger port specifically lists keyboard and mouse support; do not generalize that feature to every classic Square Enix release.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming one platform list applies to the whole franchise

Square Enix’s catalog uses different combinations of PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Switch 2, Steam, Windows and mobile support. A game’s series, publisher or original platform does not predict the current edition. Use the title-specific table and then verify the storefront listing for your region.

Confusing a remake with a remaster

A remaster generally preserves more of the original structure while improving presentation or convenience. An HD-2D remake rebuilds the audiovisual layer around the classic rules, and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade changes the format much more substantially with real-time design. Decide whether you want historical continuity or a new interpretation before purchasing.

Expecting every convenience feature in every game

Auto-battle belongs to the Final Fantasy I–VI Pixel Remaster feature set. Fast-forward and autosave are specifically highlighted for The Ivalice Chronicles. The Windows Chrono Trigger version has its own technical improvements. These features are not a universal standard across the catalog.

Relying on a physical-edition assumption

Physical availability varies by region and title, while the announcements cited for several games emphasize digital storefronts. Treat a digital listing as the confirmed purchase route unless a local retailer or the official product page confirms a boxed version for your hardware.

A simple decision framework

  1. Start with the series. Pick Final Fantasy for six numbered entry points or a tactical spin-off, Dragon Quest for traditional command RPG structure, Octopath Traveler for a newer classic-inspired game, or Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for a modern real-time interpretation.
  2. Set your fidelity target. Choose a pixel remaster or classic mode when preserving the old identity matters most. Choose HD-2D when you want a rebuilt but still traditional presentation. Choose the modern remake when you want contemporary action and cinematic design.
  3. Prioritize convenience only after choosing the game. Auto-battle, fast-forward, autosave, font options and interface changes can improve comfort, but they do not turn one game into another. Select the title whose underlying combat and story match your interests.
  4. Match the edition to your hardware. Platform support is title-specific. Confirm the exact product page for your PS4, PS5, Xbox model, Switch generation, Steam Deck or Windows PC before paying.

The result is a reliable way to play classic Square Enix ideas without treating every release as interchangeable: use the Pixel Remaster collection for the widest early Final Fantasy path, HD-2D for rebuilt traditional adventures, The Ivalice Chronicles for tactical combat with two modes, Octopath Traveler for a modern classic-inspired entry, and the listed PC port when a console version has not been established.
