Short answer: use an official digital listing if the game is still sold, or buy an authentic used copy and run it on hardware that supports its original format. An old Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, or Windows release does not automatically work on an Xbox Series console, PlayStation 5, or current Windows installation.
The practical route depends on the exact game and edition. Shrek 2 has separate console and PC releases, Shrek SuperSlam was released for several sixth-generation systems and Windows, and Shrek Forever After had a documented Steam release as well as a DVD-ROM PC edition. Check live store listings and compatibility catalogs immediately before paying.

- Authentic used physical copy: purchase an original disc or cartridge and use the original console, or a newer console with documented backward compatibility.
A used disc is not the same as downloading a ROM or a cracked executable. ROM sites, unauthorized copies, and console modifications intended to bypass software protections can create copyright, security, and account risks. The safest rule is to match the copy to the hardware it was made for and confirm support before buying.

Availability, prices, regional licensing, and stock change. A historical announcement proves that a game was sold at one point; it does not prove that the same listing is purchasable today.
Which Shrek game and edition do you have?
Start with the exact title, platform, and edition printed on the case or listing. “Shrek 2” is not one interchangeable product: its console versions and PC version were developed and distributed separately.

How Xbox backward compatibility works
Microsoft describes backward compatibility as support for selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Compatible digital games appear in the console’s Ready to Install section. With a compatible disc, the console downloads the game, but the original disc must remain inserted as the ownership license.

What this means for Shrek discs
The cited Xbox documentation does not confirm Shrek 2 or Shrek SuperSlam in the current backward-compatibility catalog. Do not buy an original Shrek Xbox disc on the assumption that it will run on Xbox One or Series X. Open Microsoft’s live compatibility list on the day you shop and search for the exact title. If it is absent, plan on original Xbox hardware or another authorized release.
Xbox purchase checklist
- Identify whether the listing is for the original Xbox release, not an Xbox 360 or unrelated platform edition.
- Check the current backward-compatibility catalog for your country.
- For a digital result, verify that the product page names your console generation and account region.
- For a disc result, confirm that you own a disc-capable console and understand that the disc must stay inserted after installation.
- On Series S, buy only a currently supported digital edition; an original disc cannot be used.
Playing on PlayStation 5
What Sony’s policy does and does not cover
Sony states that PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games. That is a PS4-to-PS5 policy. It does not establish support for PlayStation 2 discs.
Consequently, a PlayStation 2 copy of Shrek 2 or Shrek SuperSlam should be treated as an original-format game. Use a working PlayStation 2 or another device Sony explicitly lists for that title, unless Sony offers a separately listed re-release for PS5. Do not infer PS2 support from the fact that the PS5 runs many PS4 games.
How to evaluate a PS5 listing
- Look for a product page that explicitly says PS5, rather than a seller’s claim that an old PS2 disc is “backward compatible.”
- Check whether the purchase is a native digital release, a remaster, or a PS4 version playable on PS5; those are different products from a PS2 disc.
- Confirm the release is licensed and available in your account’s region.
- If no current listing exists, buy the original disc only if you also have compatible PlayStation 2 hardware.
Playing on a modern Windows PC
Shrek Forever After: the clearest digital lead
Valve announced on August 27, 2010: “The #1 animated franchise of all time is back with Shrek Forever After™ The Game and is now available for purchase on Steam.” This documents a Steam release at that time, not guaranteed current availability. Search the current Steam store while signed into the account and region that will own the game. If no purchase button appears, do not assume an old key or a third-party download is authorized.

Physical PC editions
The official Shrek Forever After PC manual specifies DVD-ROM installation. If autoplay is disabled, it directs the user to open the disc and run setup.exe. A physical copy therefore requires:
- the correct Windows disc edition and a readable disc;
- an internal optical drive or a lawful external USB DVD drive;
- administrator access to install software, if Windows requests it;
- patience for possible compatibility settings or community patches on a current Windows version.
The manual documents the original installation procedure; it does not guarantee that the 2010 program will run unchanged on every current Windows release. Keep the disc, manual, and any legitimate product key. Avoid replacing the executable with an untrusted “no-disc” crack.
PC installation procedure for a DVD copy
- Check the disc label and case to ensure it is the Windows edition, not a console release.
- Connect the optical drive and insert the DVD.
- If Windows opens an autoplay prompt, choose the installer. If nothing happens, open File Explorer, select the DVD drive, and run
setup.exeas described in the manual. - Install to a folder you can access and record any legitimate serial number supplied with the copy.
- Start the game from its installed shortcut. If it fails, note the exact error before changing files.
- Try Windows’ built-in compatibility options for the installed executable. Use only patches from a reputable preservation or game-support community, and keep a backup of the original files.
Should you check GOG and preservation stores?
GOG says its Preservation Program is intended to keep classic games playable on modern systems, with DRM-free delivery and dedicated technical support. That makes preservation-focused stores sensible places to check. The cited program page does not list a Shrek title, however, so it is not evidence that any Shrek game is currently sold there.

Search the store directly for the exact title and edition. A listing should identify the supported operating system, delivery method, and any included fixes. If the title is not listed, return to the official-store-or-authentic-disc options rather than downloading an unauthorized package.

How to buy a used copy without buying the wrong game
Verify the platform before the price
Read the platform name in the listing title, photos, and description. A “Shrek 2” case may be for PlayStation 2, original Xbox, GameCube, or Windows. Those discs are not interchangeable.
Inspect the physical copy
- Ask for clear photos of both sides of the disc or cartridge.
- Confirm the region or television standard when relevant to the original console.
- Check for deep scratches, cracks around the center hole, missing labels, or water damage.
- Make sure the manual, case, and product key are included if the PC edition needs them.
- Read the seller’s return policy in case the disc cannot be read.
Budget for the complete setup
The game price is only one part of the total. A physical route may also require the original console, a compatible controller, memory hardware, cables, and—on PC—a DVD drive. A digital route may cost more or less depending on current licensing, but it removes disc wear and usually simplifies installation. Compare the complete setup rather than the cheapest listing alone.

Shrek Forever After
This is the strongest candidate for a legal modern-PC search because Steam announced its availability in 2010. Verify the live Steam page before paying. If you own the DVD edition, follow the manual’s DVD-ROM and setup.exe procedure and be prepared for current-Windows compatibility work.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The console does not recognize the disc
- Recheck the platform: a GameCube, PlayStation 2, and original Xbox disc have different formats.
- Clean the disc gently and inspect for cracks or deep scratches.
- Confirm that the console model has the necessary drive and is in the correct region where applicable.
- For Xbox One or Series, search the live compatibility catalog. If the title is not supported, no amount of reinserting the disc will add compatibility.
The game appears in a listing but cannot be purchased
Storefront ownership and licensing are region- and date-dependent. Sign in to the account that will play the game, check the product page directly, and confirm that a purchase or download option is present. Treat an old announcement, video, or search result as historical information rather than a current sale.
The PC DVD installs but will not launch
- Confirm that installation completed and that the disc is readable.
- Run the installed program with the compatibility options available in Windows.
- Check whether the game expects the original DVD or a product key.
- Search for a reputable, version-specific community fix; do not use a random executable replacement.
- Keep the original files so you can undo a patch or reinstall cleanly.
A seller claims “works on PS5” or “works on Series S”
Ask for the exact official listing that supports the modern console. A seller’s description is not a compatibility guarantee. Series S cannot read discs at all, and Sony’s PS5 policy for PS4 games does not establish PS2-disc support.
