The practical answer: install PPSSPP, the PSP emulator, on your phone or computer, then open a PSP game file that you are legally entitled to use. PPSSPP does not include commercial games, does not require a downloaded BIOS, and can run supported ISO, CSO, and (from version 1.17) CHD images. The official download page currently labels version 1.20.4 stable and lists Windows, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and Android VR builds; check that page for the current release and operating-system requirements before installing.
What you need before you start
A complete setup has three parts: the emulator, a game image, and a device capable of running the game. PPSSPP provides the emulator. You must supply the game file yourself. The app does not distribute commercial PSP games because it does not have the rights to do so.
- PPSSPP: Download the official build for your operating system. The current 1.20 line lists Android 5.0 or newer as the Android floor, but requirements and package availability can change.
- A supported game file: PPSSPP documents ISO and CSO files, and its dumping guide documents CHD support beginning with PPSSPP 1.17. A normal ISO is the simplest starting format.
- Controls: Touch controls are available on phones. A physical controller is optional; Windows XInput and DirectInput pads and many Android Bluetooth gamepads are supported, with some device-specific limitations.
- Storage: Keep enough free space for your game images and, on Android, grant the app access to the folder that contains them.
PPSSPP emulates PSP software. It is not a player for PSP UMD-Video discs, and it does not run PlayStation 1 games that relied on the PSP’s proprietary built-in emulator.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
| Platform | Official availability and installation | Practical considerations |

| Linux | Flatpak and AppImage builds are described on the official pages. | After installation, use the Games tab to locate your image. Distribution-specific file permissions may affect which folders are visible. |
| Android VR | An Android VR build is listed on the current download page. | Follow the package’s current installation instructions; the supplied material does not establish game-by-game performance. |
Install PPSSPP from the official source
- Open PPSSPP’s official download page and identify the current stable release. At the time covered by this guide, the page labels 1.20.4 stable.
- Select the package matching your operating system: a store app or APK on Android, the App Store version on iOS, an installer or portable ZIP on Windows, a DMG on macOS, or Flatpak/AppImage on Linux.
- Complete the normal operating-system installation. On Android, use the store or the official APK instructions rather than a third-party “modded Gold” package; PPSSPP warns against unofficial modified APKs.
- Launch PPSSPP once so it can create its folders and request any storage permissions. The official introduction says the default settings should generally be suitable for a first run.
PPSSPP Gold is described in the official FAQ as a way to support development. It is not required for the emulator to function, and the available documentation does not establish a performance advantage for it.
Get a game file through a defensible route
PPSSPP reads a digital image of PSP software; it does not provide that software. The official FAQ asks, “How can I run my real PSP games in PPSSPP?” The answer is to provide your own ISO or CSO. The technical instructions below explain the documented transfer method, not a blanket statement about copyright law. Rules differ by country, and ownership of a physical disc does not automatically resolve every copying or distribution question in every jurisdiction.
Dump a UMD with a PSP
For the official UMD workflow, you need a PSP running custom firmware, a computer or other device that can copy files over USB, and a USB Mini cable. The process exposes the inserted disc as a virtual ISO so it can be copied.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Insert the UMD into the PSP.
- Connect the PSP to the computer with the USB Mini cable.
- In the custom-firmware menu, select UMD Disc as the USB device.
- On the PSP, open Settings and choose USB Connection.
- Wait for the computer to mount the virtual disc image, then copy the ISO file to a folder you control.
- Safely disconnect the PSP before removing the cable or changing the USB mode.
The cable alone is not enough: this method depends on the PSP, the appropriate firmware configuration, and a device that can copy the exposed file.
Use a PSP digital download you already possess
The dumping guide says digital downloads copied from a real PSP can be played directly. Transfer the resulting supported game files to the phone or computer without changing their contents. Keep your original source and a backup until you have confirmed that the copied file opens.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Use demos or homebrew
The official documentation also points readers to free demos and homebrew. These are alternatives when you do not own a commercial UMD or digital purchase. Avoid ROM-download sites and do not imply that downloading a commercial image is authorized merely because the file is easy to find.
Understand ISO, CSO, and CHD files
| Format | What it is | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| ISO | A raw copy of a PSP disc. | Recommended first choice because it is the straightforward format and requires no conversion. |
| CSO | A compressed ISO-style image. | PPSSPP can load it directly. Compression may reduce storage use, but do not compress a working ISO unless you have a reason. |
| CHD | A compressed disc-image format documented by PPSSPP’s dumping guide. | Support begins with PPSSPP 1.17. Use the guide’s format and compression guidance when creating one; it is not necessary for ordinary setup. |
Do not rename an unrelated archive and expect PPSSPP to recognize it. If a download is still inside a ZIP or another container, extract it first and point PPSSPP to the actual ISO, CSO, or CHD file. Keep one known-good copy before experimenting with compression.

Put the files where PPSSPP can see them
Android 11 and newer
The current download instructions say Android 11 and newer users may be prompted to choose a PSP folder. Accept the app’s current storage prompt, then place disc images in the PSP/ISO subfolder inside that selected location. Android’s permission wording can vary between releases, so follow the folder picker shown by your installed version rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Windows, macOS, and Linux
Store images anywhere your user account can read. A dedicated folder such as PSP Games keeps the library easy to back up, but PPSSPP does not require a particular desktop path. If a file does not appear, verify that the folder is readable and that you selected the directory containing the image rather than its parent archive.
iPhone and iPad
Use the App Store build’s current file-import and Files navigation instructions. The exact picker and sharing options can change with iOS and PPSSPP releases; the important requirement is that the app receives an actual supported image file, not a cloud-only placeholder that has not been downloaded.

Load a PSP game
Windows or macOS
- Open PPSSPP and select the Games tab.
- Browse to the folder containing your ISO, CSO, or CHD.
- Select the game image. On desktop builds, you can alternatively choose File → Load and select the file directly.
- Wait for the title screen. If the game is listed but fails to start, close it and test the troubleshooting steps below one at a time.
Android
- Open the Games tab.
- Navigate to the PSP folder selected during storage setup, then open
ISO. - Tap the game image to launch it.
- If the library is empty, return to the folder picker and grant access to the directory that actually contains the files.
iPhone or iPad
- Import the game image through the current iOS Files or sharing workflow.
- Open PPSSPP’s Games view and navigate to the location where the app saved the file.
- Tap the image to start it. If iOS reports that the file is unavailable, download it locally and import it again.
Set up controls
Touch controls are the quickest way to start on a phone. They are adequate for testing a game and require no accessory. A physical controller is optional, not a prerequisite.

Windows gamepads
PPSSPP’s FAQ documents support for both XInput and DirectInput controllers. Connect the pad before launching a game, open the control settings, and map any buttons that were not detected correctly. XInput pads often expose a conventional layout; DirectInput devices may require more manual mapping.
Android Bluetooth controllers
Many Android Bluetooth gamepads work, but the FAQ qualifies that support with possible limitations. Pair the controller in Android settings, start PPSSPP, and verify every button, analog stick, trigger, and directional input in the emulator’s control configuration. Some Android accessibility settings or overlay apps can intercept joystick events; temporarily disabling an interfering overlay is a useful diagnostic step.
iPhone and iPad controllers
The supplied documentation confirms the App Store build but does not promise identical behavior for every controller model. Pair through iOS, then check the controls inside PPSSPP before assuming a game-specific problem.
Start with defaults, then adjust one setting
The official introduction recommends beginning with default settings. That approach avoids confusing a game-specific issue with several simultaneous changes. If a title has graphical glitches, missing audio, unstable input, or poor responsiveness, change one relevant option, retest the same scene, and keep a note of the original value so you can undo the change.

- First check the file: Confirm that the image is a supported ISO, CSO, or CHD and that it opens from local storage.
- Then check controls: Test touch input or each physical button outside the game menu.
- Then test settings: Make one change at a time rather than applying an unverified preset from a different device.
- Keep expectations realistic: The official sources provide no universal frame-rate guarantee, device-by-device benchmark, or compatibility percentage.
Why iOS can differ from Android, Windows, or macOS
PPSSPP uses a just-in-time recompiler to improve speed. Its FAQ explains that runtime code generation is allowed on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android, but is disallowed for App Store apps on iOS. The FAQ also says the App Store versions are generally fine. This is a technical distinction, not proof that every iPhone game is slower or that every Android phone is faster: the available documentation contains no controlled comparison by device or game.
If a particular title behaves differently on an iPhone or iPad, first verify the same game image and input setup on both devices, then compare settings methodically. Do not treat an isolated problem as evidence that the entire iOS catalog is incompatible.
Troubleshoot the problems that occur most often
The game does not appear in the library
- Make sure the file is an extracted ISO, CSO, or CHD rather than a ZIP or another archive.
- On Android 11 or newer, confirm that PPSSPP has permission to the selected PSP folder and that the image is inside
PSP/ISO. - On a desktop, browse directly to the folder from the Games tab or use File → Load.
- Check the extension and try a known-good file before changing emulator settings.
PPSSPP asks for a BIOS
A separate PSP BIOS download is not required. The official FAQ states: “No. PPSSPP simulates the BIOS and the entire internal operating system.” Do not install a random BIOS file or follow a download guide that claims one is mandatory.
The game starts but controls do not work
- Open the control configuration and map the device manually.
- On Android, check for accessibility services, floating overlays, or controller-mapping apps that may capture joystick input.
- Reconnect the Bluetooth controller and test it in another app before diagnosing the game image.
- On Windows, try the controller’s other input mode if it supports both XInput and DirectInput.
The game crashes or shows graphical problems
- Return to the default settings and reproduce the problem.
- Confirm that the image was copied completely and that the source file still opens on the device where it was created.
- Change only one graphics or compatibility option at a time, then retest.
- Check the PPSSPP download page and documentation for a newer stable build, because release behavior and operating-system support are volatile.
The device feels slow
Performance depends on the operating system, hardware, game, input method, and emulator configuration. The supplied official pages do not establish a universal minimum phone or PC specification or publish a benchmark table. Close competing applications, begin with defaults, and avoid treating a result on one device as a promise for another.
What PPSSPP can and cannot emulate
- It can: run PSP software supplied as supported game images, including ISO and CSO and, on versions supporting it, CHD.
- It cannot: supply commercial games, replace the legal process of obtaining them, or play PSP UMD-Video content.
- It does not need: a separate PSP BIOS file.
- It does not guarantee: identical performance across every phone, computer, operating-system release, controller, or game.
That scope matters when choosing an emulator. The documentation reviewed here covers PPSSPP’s official setup and controller support, not an independent comparison of competing emulators or a complete compatibility ranking for the PSP library.

Phone versus PC: a practical decision
| Choose a phone when… | Choose a PC when… |
|---|---|
| You want a portable setup and are comfortable with touch controls or a Bluetooth pad. | You prefer a larger display, keyboard access, or a conventional USB gamepad. |
| Your files can be placed in the app’s permitted storage location, especially the Android PSP folder. | You want ordinary desktop file browsing and a simple backup workflow. |
| You have confirmed that your iOS or Android release exposes the controls and storage features you need. | You want the desktop builds’ documented XInput/DirectInput support and JIT runtime code generation. |
When both options are available, test the same legally obtained image on each, keep the default settings initially, and decide based on input comfort and file management rather than an unsupported claim that one platform runs every game best.
Optional accessories
- Bluetooth controller for Android: Useful if touch controls are uncomfortable. Compatibility is not universal, so verify mapping and check for Android overlays that interfere with input.
- PC gamepad: An XInput or DirectInput pad is a supported alternative to keyboard controls on Windows.
- USB Mini-B cable for PSP: Needed only for the documented UMD-transfer workflow, and useful only when you also have a PSP with the required custom-firmware setup and a copying device.
Frequently asked questions
Can PPSSPP play a PSP UMD directly from a phone?
No. The UMD must first be transferred into a supported game image using a separate process; a phone cannot read the PSP disc directly.
Do I need to be online every time I play?
The documented workflow is local: PPSSPP loads a game image stored on the device. Internet access may still be needed to download the app, transfer a file from cloud storage, or install updates.
Can I use the same game file on a phone and a PC?
Yes, provided the file is a supported image and you move it to each device through a lawful transfer route. Each installation still needs permission to read its local copy.
Should I compress every ISO?
No. ISO is the simplest starting format. CSO is supported directly, and CHD is documented from PPSSPP 1.17, but compression is optional and adds another step that can complicate troubleshooting.
Is owning a UMD enough to make any download legal?
Not necessarily. Copyright and personal-copy rules vary by jurisdiction. The official technical guide explains how to expose and copy a disc image, but it does not provide jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
