The practical answer: a PS5 does not generally read original PS1, PS2, or PS3 game discs. To play a specific classic, first look for it in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, where an eligible title may be downloadable or streamable. If it is not there, search the PlayStation Store for a separate digital PS4 or PS5 release, remake, or remaster. PS3 classics offered through the catalog are streaming-only. Availability depends on your country, account region, membership, and the title’s current listing.
What works on PS5—and what does not
PS5 classic-game access is based on the exact title and the way Sony currently offers it, not simply on the age of the console or disc. The original disc formats below are not a general backward-compatibility route:

Sony describes the PS4/PS5 path separately from its classic catalog. The company says more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS4 and PS5 in disc or digital formats; that does not make an original PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc compatible. Option 1: Use the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog
On the US PlayStation Plus plans page, the Classics Catalog is listed as a Premium benefit. The exact plan name, catalog, and benefits can differ by country, and games can be added or removed. Treat the catalog as service access tied to an applicable active membership rather than permanent ownership of every listed game. Check your local listing before subscribing or renewing.

Find a game on your PS5
- Write down the exact title, including subtitles or regional versions. Different releases can have different Store pages.
- Confirm the country or region attached to your PlayStation Network account. Catalog selection and plan benefits are region-specific.
- From the PS5 Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Go to Benefits, then open Classics Catalog.
- Search for the title or browse the catalog. Open the game’s details page rather than assuming that a similarly named entry is the same release.
- Read the page’s access label. An eligible entry may show Download, Stream, or both. Confirm that your membership level is accepted before starting.
PlayStation’s official instructions for this path are in How to access the PlayStation Plus classics catalog on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles. The interface can change, so use the labels shown on your console rather than an older menu guide.
Download a catalog game
When the listing offers Download, the game is installed on the console in the same general way as another digital PS5 title. Select Download, allow the installation to finish, and launch it from the Games home screen or Game Library. Download availability does not mean the game is yours to keep after your qualifying membership ends; the entitlement is checked against the service.
Stream a catalog game
If the listing offers Stream, select that option to start cloud streaming without installing the full game. PlayStation states that streaming requires a broadband connection with a minimum speed of 5 Mbps. For supported games and supported 1080p streaming, the published threshold is at least 15 Mbps. Those are Sony’s service requirements, not a guarantee that every home network will deliver identical latency or image quality.

Important streaming restrictions
Streaming is not feature-equivalent to running an installed game. PlayStation’s support information lists several unsupported functions and devices while a Classics Catalog game is being streamed:
- Broadcasting
- Share Play
- Share Screen
- Remote Play
- PlayStation VR
- PlayStation Move
- Mouse and keyboard input
- Third-party controllers
A standard compatible PlayStation controller is therefore the safest choice for a streamed classic. If a game depends on one of the unavailable features or accessories, confirm that limitation before committing to streaming.
Option 2: Buy a separate digital PS4 or PS5 release
A classic may be absent from the subscription catalog but available as an individual Store product. Search the PlayStation Store on your PS5, or use the Store associated with your account’s region, for the exact title. The result might be a digital PS4 version that runs on PS5, a native PS5 edition, a remake, or a remaster. Read the product description and edition information carefully: a similarly titled modern game is not necessarily the original release.
This route is a one-time purchase for that specific Store entitlement rather than access dependent on a catalog membership. The game remains subject to the Store account and licensing rules, and the edition may differ from the original in graphics, controls, content, or features. Sony’s public pages establish that individual titles and current prices vary; they do not establish a universal price or guarantee that an unnamed game is sold in every country.

Option 3: Use a compatible PS4 edition
Many older games returned as PS4 releases. A digital PS4 edition can be downloaded to a PS5 from the account that owns it. A physical PS4 disc can be used only with a PS5 model that has a disc drive: insert the disc, install the game, and keep the disc inserted when you play because it acts as the license. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read any physical disc.
Compatibility of a particular PS4 title, plus any upgrade entitlement, is title-specific. A PS4 port is also not the same thing as inserting the game’s original PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc. Check the Store page or the publisher’s current product information for edition differences before buying a second copy.
Choose the right route for your situation

Why an original classic disc usually will not work
PS5 backward compatibility is not a universal emulator for every earlier PlayStation disc. Sony’s supported routes distinguish PS4 compatibility from the Classics Catalog and modern Store releases. Consequently, placing an original PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc in the drive generally produces no playable version. The disc drive in a PS5 model that includes one does not change that software support.
The practical test is the title listing, not the disc’s physical condition. If Sony has not provided a compatible catalog or modern release for that game, the PS5 has no officially supported way to launch the original disc.

Membership, catalog changes, and ownership
The US PlayStation Plus page identifies Classics Catalog access as a Premium benefit. Plans and benefits are not identical worldwide, so open the PlayStation Plus page for your account region. A catalog game can also leave the service. Before paying for a higher tier, search for the title while signed in and confirm its current access method.
- Membership check: Make sure your active plan includes Classics Catalog access; a lower tier may not.
- Availability check: Confirm the game is still listed in your country, not merely mentioned in an old article or video.
- Access check: Note whether the title is downloadable, streamable, or both.
- Edition check: Compare the catalog version with any Store version if you care about language, add-ons, save compatibility, or presentation.
- Exit check: If the game leaves the catalog or your membership expires, catalog entitlement may no longer permit play.
Regional and title-specific differences
There is no single worldwide list of classic games. Country licensing, age ratings, languages, and publisher agreements can change which titles appear and whether they can be downloaded or streamed. The cited PlayStation pages are primarily US pages; use your own country’s PlayStation Store and Plus catalog for the authoritative result.
Search by the complete title and inspect the release details. A game may have several regional names, a censored or edited edition, a separate compilation, or a modern remake with a different product page. A listing in one country does not prove that the same listing exists for another account region.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
The game does not appear in Classics Catalog
- Search the exact title in the PlayStation Store, including alternate subtitle or spelling.
- Check that you are signed into the intended PSN account and country region.
- Look for a PS4, PS5, remake, remaster, or compilation release instead of the original entry.
- Do not purchase Premium solely on the assumption that an absent title will be added.
There is no Download button
The listing may be stream-only. This is expected for PS3 classics in the catalog. Check the Stream button and the connection requirements, or search for an installable PS4/PS5 release. A slow connection cannot create a download option that Sony has not provided.

Streaming starts but is unstable
- Verify that the connection meets PlayStation’s 5 Mbps minimum; supported 1080p streaming requires at least 15 Mbps.
- Use a wired connection where practical, or move the console closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
- Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity on the network.
- Retry outside peak periods if the service reports a queue.
- Choose Download or an individual release when the game offers one.
The published speed figures are minimum thresholds. They do not measure latency, packet loss, congestion, or the quality of your wireless signal.
A PS4 disc is rejected
Confirm that you own a PS5 model with a disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read the disc. If the console has a drive, check the disc for damage, insert it with the label orientation shown by the console, and confirm that the particular PS4 title is supported. None of these steps makes an original PS1, PS2, or PS3 disc compatible.
A streamed game does not support my accessory
Review the streaming restrictions before troubleshooting the accessory. PlayStation lists third-party controllers, mouse and keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, Remote Play, Share Play, Share Screen, and broadcasting among unsupported functions or devices for streamed classics. Use a compatible standard controller and install the game, when a Download option exists, if you need a feature that streaming blocks.
