The supported way to play many classic PlayStation games on a PS4 or PS5 is through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Open PlayStation Plus on your console, find the title, and use the Download or Stream option shown on its listing. In the United States, Classics Catalog access is part of PlayStation Plus Premium. Some titles, especially many classic PS3 games, are streaming-only. A PS5 cannot read PS3 game discs, so check the current listing in your local console store before subscribing or buying anything.
What “classic PlayStation games” means on PS4 and PS5
There is no single switch that makes every original PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable or PlayStation 3 game run on a modern console. The practical, officially documented route covered here is the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Sony groups eligible titles in the service and marks each game with the play method currently available for your account and region.
The catalog contains games from several generations. Sony’s examples include PS1 titles such as Resident Evil: Director’s Cut, The Legend of Dragoon, Tekken 2 and Ridge Racer Type 4; PS2 titles such as Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Dark Cloud and Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus; PSP titles such as Killzone: Liberation and Resistance: Retribution; and PS3/PS4-era examples including Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, God of War III Remastered and The Last of Us Remastered. These are examples, not a permanent inventory. A game can be unavailable in your country, leave the service, or offer a different play method from the one shown elsewhere.
The original PlayStation launched in 1994. Its age does not by itself determine whether a particular game works on your PS4 or PS5; the current catalog listing and your membership do.

What you need before starting
- A PS4 or PS5 connected to your PlayStation account. The catalog is accessed from the console’s PlayStation Plus area.
- The membership tier that includes Classics Catalog in your market. In the US comparison, that is PlayStation Plus Premium. Essential is shown with the core benefits, and Extra adds the Game Catalog; neither is shown with Classics Catalog access on that comparison.
- A title that is currently listed for your region and plan. Catalog contents and removal dates change, so verify the individual game before you commit to a subscription.
- A broadband connection if you plan to stream. Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps for Classics Catalog streaming. Streaming at 1080p requires a title that supports 1080p and a connection of at least 15 Mbps.
- A compatible controller. The standard PS5 DualSense and PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 are the controller types Sony describes for these consoles. Sony cautions that not every third-party controller works with every game or service feature.
PlayStation Plus access is a service benefit, not a permanent purchase of every game in the catalog. If your membership ends or a title is removed, access can end even if you previously downloaded the game through the service.
How to play a classic game on PS5
- From the PS5 Games home screen, scroll to PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits tab.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Browse or search for the game you want, then open its product page.
- Choose Download or Stream if that option appears. The available button is the authoritative answer for that title, account and region.
If you have already claimed or installed a PlayStation Plus game, Sony also makes PlayStation Plus games available through Game Library. The library view is useful when you know the title but do not want to browse the catalog again.
How to find and play a classic game on PS4
- From the PS4 function screen, scroll to PlayStation Plus.
- Select Classics Catalog.
- Open the listing for the title you want.
- Select Download or Stream when the listing offers it.
The same region, membership and availability rules apply on PS4. A title visible on one console is not a guarantee that it is currently offered to every account, and a game’s listing can change over time.

Download or stream: which option should you use?
| Option | What the listing shows | Connection requirement | Important trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Download | The game can be installed from the catalog for your plan and region. | No active streaming session is required after the download. | Availability still depends on the membership and the title remaining in the catalog. The listing determines whether this option exists. |
| Stream | The game can be played from Sony’s cloud service without a local game installation. | At least 5 Mbps; 1080p requires a 1080p-capable title and at least 15 Mbps. | A queue can occur, image quality can fall at lower speeds, and several console features and accessories are unavailable while streaming. |
Do not assume that a game offering streaming also offers a download. Sony says a wide selection of classic PS3 games in Classics Catalog is streaming-only. The product page’s buttons, rather than the game’s age or platform label, tell you which route is available.
Do you need PlayStation Plus Premium?
For the United States, Sony’s PlayStation Plus comparison places Classics Catalog and Cloud Streaming under the Premium tier. The same comparison lists Essential’s core benefits and Extra’s Game Catalog, but does not show Classics Catalog as an Essential or Extra benefit.
Plan names, benefits and prices can differ outside the US. Before subscribing, open the PlayStation Plus page on your own console or regional PlayStation website and confirm all three of these points:
- your local tier includes Classics Catalog;
- the specific game is in the catalog for your account’s country; and
- the title offers the method you want, such as Download rather than Stream.
Sony’s catalog FAQ says Premium members can choose to download or stream games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog when the individual listing supports that method. It also notes that titles can have removal dates. Treat a subscription as ongoing access under service rules, not ownership of a permanent digital copy.

Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. Sony’s backward-compatibility support page states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” Do not insert an original PS3 disc into a PS5 expecting it to install or authenticate.
Sony also warns that a PS4 digital game obtained through the PS3 game-to-PS4 upgrade program may require the original PS3 disc. Because the PS5 cannot use that disc, the upgrade path does not make the physical PS3 media usable on PS5.
This restriction should not be generalized into a promise that every PS1, PS2 or PSP retail disc works on a PS4 or PS5. The documented route here is the service catalog. Check the current digital listing for the game you want instead of buying legacy media for a console that may not support it.
Which classic games can you find?
Sony’s editorial catalog page organizes examples by the original platform generation. The following table shows the examples Sony names and the safe way to interpret them.
| Catalog grouping | Examples named by Sony | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| PS1 Classics | Resident Evil: Director’s Cut; The Legend of Dragoon; Tekken 2; Ridge Racer Type 4 | Whether the title is currently listed in your country and whether Download, Stream or both are offered. |
| PS2 Classics | Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy; Dark Cloud; Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus | The same live listing, plan and play-method checks. |
| PSP Classics | Killzone: Liberation; Resistance: Retribution | Current regional availability and the button shown on the title page. |
| PS3/PS4-era classics | Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection; God of War III Remastered; The Last of Us Remastered | Whether the listing treats the game as a catalog benefit, a stream, a download or another current offer. |
The list is illustrative rather than exhaustive. A title’s presence in an editorial article does not guarantee that it remains in the service, appears in every region or has the same access method today.
Streaming requirements and restrictions
Bandwidth and picture quality
Sony’s minimum requirement for Classics Catalog streaming is 5 Mbps. For 1080p streaming, the game must support 1080p and the connection should be at least 15 Mbps. If the connection is slower, Sony says the stream can use a lower resolution. These are connection thresholds, not a promise of a particular frame rate, latency or image quality.
Features that are unavailable while streaming
On PS4 and PS5, Sony lists the following limitations during streaming:

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

A queue may also occur before a streaming session starts. If the title offers a download, downloading avoids the live streaming session and these streaming-specific restrictions, although the game remains subject to the membership and catalog rules.

For PS3 games streamed through the service, Sony maps the original controls to the modern touchpad. On a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4, the left side of the touchpad acts as SELECT and the right side acts as START. You must click the touchpad; tapping it does not perform the same input.
How to choose the right route
Choose a download when the listing offers it
A download is the simpler choice when you want to avoid dependence on an active streaming session, a possible queue or the streaming-only feature restrictions. It is also the only catalog route for a game whose listing does not provide Stream. The title page still controls access: a download does not turn a subscription benefit into permanent ownership.
Choose streaming when the game is streaming-only
Streaming is the documented way to play many classic PS3 titles in the catalog. Confirm that your connection meets the 5 Mbps minimum, and use the 15 Mbps threshold only when the title supports 1080p and you want that resolution. Plan for a queue and for the unavailable features listed above.
Check the listing before changing your plan
If one particular game is your reason for subscribing, search for that game first. Confirm the local product page, the required plan and the Download or Stream buttons. This check prevents a common mistake: subscribing for a title that is absent in your region, has left the catalog or is available only through a method you cannot use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshooting common problems
The Classics Catalog does not appear
- Check that you are signed in to the account whose membership you intend to use.
- Review your regional PlayStation Plus comparison. In the US, Classics Catalog is a Premium benefit; the comparison does not show it under Essential or Extra.
- Confirm that your console is online and that you are opening the PlayStation Plus area rather than only the general Game Catalog.
- Search Game Library if you previously added the title and are trying to locate an existing entitlement.
There is no Download button
The absence of Download usually means that the catalog listing does not offer a local installation for that title, plan or region. Many classic PS3 games are streaming-only. Use Stream if it is shown and your connection meets Sony’s requirement; otherwise, verify the title in the local catalog before assuming a download is available elsewhere.
The stream looks soft or unstable
Check the connection against Sony’s thresholds: 5 Mbps is the minimum for streaming, while 15 Mbps is the stated requirement for 1080p when the title supports 1080p. A lower speed can reduce resolution. The support information does not establish a guaranteed latency or frame-rate figure, so do not treat a speed test as a promise of identical performance in every session.

You are waiting in a queue
A queue is a documented possibility for streaming. Wait for the session to become available, or use Download if the game’s listing provides that option. A queue does not mean the title is missing from your membership.
A controller or accessory does not work
Streaming does not support third-party controllers, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move, HD Camera, PlayStation Camera, Remote Play, Share Play, Share Screen or broadcasting. Use a supported DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 for the documented control path. In streamed PS3 games, click the left or right side of the touchpad for SELECT or START rather than tapping.

A game you expected is gone
Catalog availability changes over time, and Sony says individual titles may have removal dates. Reopen the current regional listing and confirm the game’s status. Do not rely on an old article, video or screenshot as proof that the title is still included.
Important limits on discs and older purchases
The official support information establishes the PS3-disc restriction on PS5, but it does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every PS1, PS2 or PSP retail disc on every PS4 and PS5 model. That means you should not infer broad disc compatibility from the existence of a similarly named catalog version.
When you own older physical media, identify the exact console, edition and disc generation first. For PS3 discs specifically, the answer on PS5 is fixed: they are not supported. For other legacy media, rely on the current console store listing or the manufacturer’s compatibility information for that exact product rather than assuming that the original disc will boot.
A quick decision checklist
- Want a PS1, PS2, PSP or PS3-era game? Search the Classics Catalog on your PS4 or PS5.
- In the US? Confirm that your account has PlayStation Plus Premium; Essential and Extra are not shown with Classics Catalog access in Sony’s comparison.
- Outside the US? Check your regional plan name and benefits instead of copying the US tier label.
- See Download? Install it through the listing and remember that access remains tied to the membership and catalog status.
- See Stream only? Ensure at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p when the game supports it, and expect streaming restrictions or a queue.
- Planning to use a PS3 disc on PS5? Do not buy or insert it for that purpose; PS5 does not support PS3 discs.
- Relying on an example from an older list? Verify the live local listing, because catalog contents and removal dates change.
Bottom line
On PS4 and PS5, start with PlayStation Plus, open Classics Catalog, and follow the Download or Stream button on the individual game page. In the US, Premium is the tier that includes the catalog. Downloads avoid streaming-session limits; streaming is required for titles marked streaming-only and needs at least 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps required for 1080p when supported. The catalog is regional and changeable, and PS5 cannot play PS3 discs, so the current listing on your own console is the final compatibility check.
