Short answer: You cannot open Nintendo’s NES, Super NES, or Game Boy Nintendo Classics apps without an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo also says it does not plan to sell those Nintendo Classics games individually outside the service. To play retro games without a subscription, buy a separately sold Switch port or a licensed compilation whose catalog includes the game you want.
What you can and cannot play without a membership
Nintendo separates its retro catalog into two types: subscription software delivered through Nintendo Switch Online and games sold as ordinary Switch products. The distinction matters because buying a controller, downloading the app, or using a different account on the same console does not remove the membership check.
Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ says members retain access to the company’s classic-game libraries while their membership is active. It also says Nintendo has no plans to sell those Nintendo Classics games outside Nintendo Switch Online or to re-create the former Virtual Console model on Switch.
- Without Nintendo Switch Online: Nintendo’s NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy library apps are not available to an unsubscribed account. Nintendo Switch 2 owners also need the applicable membership tier for GameCube classics.
- With separately purchased software: You can play Switch games and licensed retro compilations that are sold independently, including products from publishers such as Konami, SEGA and Atari. These products have their own game lists and do not unlock Nintendo’s subscription apps.
- With an optional retro controller: A classic-style controller can change the feel of a game, but it cannot satisfy Nintendo’s account or membership requirement.
Nintendo’s classic libraries and the membership tier they require
The standard Nintendo Switch Online plan includes the NES, Super NES and Game Boy applications. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds the higher-generation libraries. The account launching the classic-game software must be the account with the membership, even if another user on the same console subscribes.

| Classic library | Required access | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| NES | Nintendo Switch Online | Access lasts while the launching account’s membership is active. |
| Super NES | Nintendo Switch Online | Expansion Pack is not required for this library. |
| Game Boy | Nintendo Switch Online | The account using the app must have its own eligible membership. |
| Nintendo 64 | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Included in the higher tier, not the standard plan. |
| SEGA Genesis | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Included in the higher tier, not the standard plan. |
| Game Boy Advance | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Included in the higher tier, not the standard plan. |
| Virtual Boy | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | Included in the higher tier where Nintendo offers the library. |
| GameCube on Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | GameCube classics are available only on Nintendo Switch 2. |
Nintendo permits offline use of these applications, but the console must periodically verify the membership. Nintendo’s support information specifies an online verification at least once every seven days. If the membership expires, the classic games become inaccessible; save data stays on the console and can be used again if the membership is renewed.
If you do have a membership: install the correct Nintendo Classics app
These steps are useful when a reader is deciding whether a subscription is necessary. They also prevent a common mistake: downloading the app with one user and then trying to launch it with a different, unsubscribed user.
- On the Switch, open Nintendo eShop with the user account that has the Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Open the Nintendo Switch Online or membership-content area and choose the classic library for the system you want.
- Download the matching application, such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System or Game Boy app.
- Launch the application with that same subscribed user account. A membership on another account on the console does not meet this account requirement.
- Connect the console to the internet periodically so Nintendo can validate the membership. Offline play is supported between checks, but access can be blocked after the verification window expires.
Nintendo documents the download path in How to Access the Nintendo Classics Game Libraries. The app itself is not a standalone purchase: installing it does not create a permanent license to the games inside it.
The official subscription-free route
If the exact game you want exists only in one of Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics apps, there is no separate Nintendo eShop purchase that bypasses the membership requirement. Nintendo’s FAQ says, “There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems.” It also says Nintendo Classics games are not planned for sale outside Nintendo Switch Online.
That does not mean every retro game on Switch is subscription-only. Publishers sell individual ports and licensed collections as normal Switch products. Those purchases can be played without Nintendo Switch Online unless a particular game separately requires online features. The collection’s catalog, not its age or marketing language, determines whether it contains the game you want.

Konami Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection
Nintendo’s U.S. store page for Konami’s Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection lists it as a Switch product sold separately from Nintendo Switch Online. It is an arcade-focused Konami compilation, so it is relevant when you want a title from that publisher’s arcade history rather than an NES or Super NES game from Nintendo’s own subscription catalog. Check the store listing for the specific games included in the edition available in your country.
SEGA Mega Drive Classics
Nintendo Australia describes SEGA Mega Drive Classics as a Switch collection containing more than 50 titles. Its catalog represents SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis software, not Nintendo’s NES, Super NES or Game Boy libraries. Availability, packaging and the exact listing can differ by region, so confirm the local eShop or retailer page before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAtari 50: The Anniversary Celebration
Atari’s product page for Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration describes 90-plus classic games in the standard edition and more than 100 playable classics in the expanded edition. Those numbers are Atari’s catalog descriptions for the named editions, not a count of all retro games on Switch. Make sure the seller identifies the edition you are purchasing and whether it is physical or digital.
| Collection | Publisher and style | Catalog information stated by the publisher or platform page | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection | Konami; arcade games | The linked Nintendo U.S. store page lists the collection and its included titles. | Confirm that the particular Konami game you want appears in the current regional listing. |
| SEGA Mega Drive Classics | SEGA; Mega Drive/Genesis games | More than 50 titles, according to Nintendo Australia. | Check your country’s listing, the exact catalog and whether you are buying a physical or digital edition. |
| Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, standard edition | Atari; Atari history and classic games | 90-plus classic games, according to Atari’s product page. | Verify that the standard edition is the one offered by the seller and review its game list. |
| Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration, expanded edition | Atari; expanded Atari collection | More than 100 playable classics, according to Atari’s product page. | Check that the expanded edition is available in your region and identify its format. |
None of these collections is interchangeable with another. A SEGA compilation will not add Nintendo’s NES catalog, and an Atari anthology will not provide the games in the Nintendo Entertainment System app. Treat every collection as a separate product with a fixed list of included titles.

How to choose a subscription-free game or collection
Use this process before spending money. It is more reliable than searching for a collection by a broad phrase such as “classic Nintendo games,” because store pages often use “classic” to describe several unrelated platforms.
- Write down the exact game title. Include the original platform if you know it, such as NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Mega Drive or arcade. Similar titles can appear in several versions.
- Identify the rights holder or publisher. Nintendo, Konami, SEGA and Atari maintain different catalogs. A compilation from one publisher generally cannot substitute for a Nintendo Classics app from another.
- Search the local Nintendo eShop and reputable retailers. Look for a separately sold Switch product rather than the Nintendo Classics application. If the result is only a Nintendo Classics app, it is membership-gated.
- Open the full game list. Do not rely on the number of games or the word “collection” in the title. Confirm the exact title, version and language or regional edition where those details matter.
- Check the platform and edition. A Mega Drive/Genesis version, arcade version and NES version can differ in controls, graphics, content and save behavior. For Atari 50, distinguish the standard and expanded editions.
- Confirm format and local availability. Physical and digital editions can have different stock, packaging and included bonuses. Nintendo’s Australia listing for SEGA Mega Drive Classics and the U.S. listing for Konami’s collection illustrate why regional store pages should be checked directly.
- Check the network wording. The collection may be playable offline even if a separate feature uses internet access. Do not assume that buying a game grants access to Nintendo’s subscription applications.
Why another account’s subscription does not unlock the games
Nintendo ties access to the user account that launches the classic software. If User A has Nintendo Switch Online and User B does not, User B cannot normally open the NES, Super NES or Game Boy library simply because both accounts are on the same console. Downloading the app while signed in as User A also does not transfer the membership entitlement to User B.

When troubleshooting, first select the account that actually holds the membership, then launch the corresponding library. If that account’s membership has ended, renewal restores access to the apps and to their existing save data, but the save data is not itself a substitute for an active membership.
Offline play, verification and save data
Nintendo supports offline play for its classic applications after they have been installed and accessed by an eligible account. The important limitation is periodic verification: the console must connect to the internet at least once every seven days to confirm membership status. Plan a verification connection before traveling or using the console somewhere without internet access.

- Membership active and recently verified: the classic app can be used offline.
- More than seven days without verification: the app may require an internet connection before it will launch.
- Membership expired: the games become inaccessible, although save data remains stored on the console.
- Membership renewed: access can resume, allowing the retained save data to be used again.
These rules apply to Nintendo’s subscription apps. A separately purchased collection has its own licensing and connectivity behavior, which should be checked on its product page.

Nintendo’s Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics listing says the optional Nintendo wireless NES controller is not required to play the library. The controller can provide a more familiar shape and button layout, but the listing still marks the software as requiring Nintendo Switch Online.

The console has a subscription on another user
Sign in with the user whose account is subscribed. Nintendo’s stated account rule means that another user’s membership on the same console does not satisfy the check for an unsubscribed account.
The games worked before a trip but now will not start offline
Connect the console to the internet and launch the app with the subscribed account so Nintendo can verify the membership. The service allows offline play, but verification is required at least every seven days.
The membership ended and saved progress seems missing
Ending the membership blocks access to the classic games but does not delete the save data stored on the console, according to Nintendo’s FAQ. Renew the membership and launch the same classic app with the same account to use the saved progress again.
A collection does not contain the expected game
Recheck the exact product edition and its title list. A publisher’s collection is limited to its advertised catalog; a game’s presence in a Nintendo Classics app does not imply that it appears in a separately sold compilation.
Decision guide: which route fits your goal?
- You want a specific NES, Super NES or Game Boy game that appears only in Nintendo’s app: Nintendo Switch Online is the official Switch access route; Nintendo says those Nintendo Classics games are not planned for individual sale.
- You want to avoid any subscription and are flexible about the publisher or platform: Search for a separately purchased Switch port or licensed collection, then verify its exact catalog.
- You want a broad retro package: Compare the included lists and editions of products such as SEGA Mega Drive Classics or Atari 50 rather than comparing headline game counts alone.
- You mainly want the original controller feel: Use an optional compatible controller, but treat it as an accessory. It does not change software access rules.
The practical answer is therefore specific rather than universal: Nintendo’s own NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries remain subscription services, and the higher-tier libraries require Expansion Pack. Without Nintendo Switch Online, play only the classic games that a publisher has released separately for Switch, after confirming that the exact title and edition are available in your region.
