The official way to play NES games on a Nintendo Switch is Nintendo Switch Online. Download the NES/Nintendo Classics application from Nintendo eShop with an active membership, open it from the HOME Menu, and choose a game. Access is part of the membership rather than a permanent purchase of individual NES ROMs, and Nintendo cautions that catalog availability can change.

Other current consoles offer their own retro catalogs. PlayStation Plus Premium includes Sony’s Classics Catalog on PS4 and PS5, while Ubisoft+ Classics is a publisher collection available through PlayStation and Xbox subscription channels. Neither service is a substitute for Nintendo’s NES library, so the best choice depends on the exact game, console you own, controller preferences, and whether you want subscription access or a permanent purchase.

The quickest answer: use Nintendo Switch Online on Switch

Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s official route to its NES library on a modern Switch console. A member downloads the appropriate Nintendo Classics application from Nintendo eShop, launches it from the HOME Menu, and selects a title from the available library. Compatible games can also support online play, and the service includes classic libraries beyond NES, including Super NES and Game Boy collections.

This is a service entitlement, not a store transaction for each game. Your access is associated with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s catalog information also warns that availability may change, so a game visible today should not be treated as a permanently guaranteed part of the service. Check the current catalog for your account region before subscribing for one particular title.

What you need before starting

A compatible Nintendo Switch console

The procedure applies to Nintendo Switch hardware that can access Nintendo eShop. You will need an internet connection to obtain the classic-game application and to authenticate the membership. Once installed, the app appears alongside your other software on the HOME Menu.

An account with Nintendo Switch Online

The user who opens Nintendo eShop should have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s support instructions tie the classic-game libraries to membership access. If several people use the same console, select the user whose account owns the membership when entering eShop and launching the application.

Enough storage and current system software

The NES application is a download, so leave sufficient free storage and install any pending console updates if eShop or the app refuses to start. The exact storage requirement can vary by application version; Nintendo does not provide a single universal figure in the material describing access.

Optional: a classic-style controller

Nintendo documents specially designed NES-style Switch controllers for members in the United States and Canada. They are optional: Joy-Con controllers, a Switch Pro Controller, and other compatible inputs can run the application. The dedicated controller is relevant when you want the shape, button travel, and directional-pad feel of the original system.

Step-by-step: play an NES game on Nintendo Switch

  1. Open Nintendo eShop. From the Switch HOME Menu, select Nintendo eShop and choose the user with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  2. Find the NES/Nintendo Classics application. Use the eShop search and select the NES or Nintendo Classics library app associated with Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo distributes the application separately from the membership enrollment screen.
  3. Download the application. Start the download and wait for it to finish. If the download is unavailable, verify that the selected user has an active membership, the console is online, and enough storage is free.
  4. Launch it from HOME. Return to the HOME Menu and open the newly installed classic-game application.
  5. Choose a game. Browse the titles shown for your account and region, then select the game you want to start. The list is the practical authority for what your membership can access at that moment.
  6. Configure the input you prefer. Pair an official NES-style Switch controller if you have one, or continue with Joy-Con or another supported controller. Button mapping and comfort matter more than raw performance for these games, which were designed around a simple digital pad and a small number of buttons.
  7. Use the app’s available features. Individual titles may provide online functionality or classic-game conveniences through the application. The exact options can differ by game, so inspect the in-game menu rather than assuming every NES title has identical controls or network features.

Membership access versus buying an NES game outright

On Switch, the official NES route described by Nintendo is subscription-based. You are paying for the right to use the classic-game library while the Nintendo Switch Online membership remains active, not purchasing an individual NES ROM that remains playable independently of the service.

  • Advanced 2.4GHz Wireless Connection Stable 2.4GHz RF wireless technology provides a fast and responsive gaming experience with up to 10 meters (32 ft) of range. No lag, no drops — just smooth gameplay.
  • Simple Plug & Play Setup: No drivers or software required. Just plug the USB receiver into your device and start playing instantly. Compatible with most programs and emulator platforms that support standard USB game controllers.
  • Classic Retro Design with Precision Controls Features a familiar SNES-style layout with super-sensitive buttons for accurate, responsive control. Ideal for NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, RetroArch, BSNES, OpenEmu, and more.
  • Rechargeable Battery with Long Life Built-in 240mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 3 hours of continuous gameplay. Fully charges in about 1 hour. Includes battery level indicator for convenient monitoring.

That distinction affects how you should decide:

  • Choose the membership route if you want several Nintendo classics, online features where supported, and access to the broader Super NES and Game Boy libraries included with the service.
  • Check the current catalog first if one specific game is the reason you are subscribing. Nintendo says availability can change, and the catalog can differ by region.
  • Do not assume an old digital purchase transfers. A game bought on a previous Nintendo platform, or a physical cartridge you own, does not automatically create Switch access. Use the Switch catalog and Nintendo account entitlement shown on the current console.
  • Budget for an ongoing charge. No single current price is established because Nintendo pricing varies by region, plan, tax, and promotional period. Check the price displayed for your account before checkout.

How the Switch experience differs from original NES hardware

Controls and input feel

The biggest practical difference is the controller. Original NES games assume a compact, hard-edged directional pad and two face buttons. Joy-Con controls are functional, but their small separated buttons and detachable design can feel less natural for precise platforming or repeated directional taps. A dedicated NES-style Switch controller is the closest official accessory option for that original layout.

Display and aspect ratio

Modern televisions often upscale the image and may add their own processing. Use the Switch’s display settings and your television’s game or low-latency mode when available. Avoid judging the game by a large-screen image alone: pixel art designed for a standard-definition CRT can look softer, sharper, or more blocky after modern scaling.

Save behavior and convenience features

Classic-game applications can add conveniences that original cartridges did not provide. Nintendo’s general service description emphasizes access to classic software and online play in compatible titles; the exact save, suspend, or display controls depend on the application and game. Open the software’s pause or options menu to see what is actually available instead of assuming a universal rewind or save-anywhere function.

Online play

Nintendo says online play is available in compatible classic titles. Compatibility is title-specific, so a game that was originally single-player will not automatically gain a network mode. When online play exists, an active membership and an internet connection are required, and the other player may need the relevant account access as well.

Regional and catalog limitations to check

Catalogs are not necessarily identical worldwide

Nintendo’s availability warning is important for travelers, families with multiple account regions, and anyone following a recommendation from another country. The titles shown in your application are the ones your account can use in its current region. A game listed on a North American page may not appear in the same form elsewhere.

Availability can change

Nintendo does not promise that every classic title remains in the library forever. Catalog updates can add games, remove games, or alter which software is presented through an application. Before renewing solely for one title, open the current catalog on your console or check Nintendo’s current service information for your region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Membership status controls access

If the membership expires, classic-library access tied to that membership can stop even though the application remains installed. Renewing the membership restores the entitlement when the title is still offered, but it does not guarantee that a removed title will return.

What other modern consoles offer

There is no single cross-platform “NES service.” Modern systems group retro software by platform holder, publisher, or compatibility program. The following options are useful comparisons, but they do not all contain Nintendo’s NES games.

Option Hardware What it provides Purchase model NES replacement? Features stated by the provider
Nintendo Switch Online classic libraries Nintendo Switch Nintendo’s NES, Super NES, and Game Boy collections, subject to current catalog availability Membership access; not a permanent individual-ROM purchase Yes, this is the official Switch route to Nintendo’s NES library Online play in compatible titles; optional NES-style Switch controller support
PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Selected PlayStation-family and PSP classics Premium subscription tier No; it is a PlayStation-focused catalog Sony describes save-anytime and rewind interface features for selected classics
PlayStation Plus Extra or Essential PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Other subscription benefits, but not the Premium Classics Catalog Lower PlayStation Plus tiers No The Classics Catalog is identified as a Premium benefit, not an Extra or Essential benefit
Ubisoft+ Classics through PlayStation subscriptions PlayStation A publisher catalog of older Ubisoft franchises Access through supported PlayStation Plus arrangements No; it is not an NES library Ubisoft identifies it as a PlayStation subscription channel
Ubisoft+ Classics through Xbox Xbox The same type of publisher-focused Ubisoft collection through the supported Xbox channel Access through Game Pass Ultimate No; it is not an NES library Ubisoft identifies Xbox access through Game Pass Ultimate
Other authorized retro offerings Varies Examples include Atari Flashback Classics and Xbox backward-compatibility services Varies by program Not stated Listed as authorized retro offerings in a 2024 Entertainment Software Association filing hosted by the U.S. Copyright Office

PlayStation 4 and PS5: when Premium makes sense

PlayStation Plus Premium is the relevant Sony comparison for retro players. Sony identifies its Classics Catalog as a Premium benefit; Extra and Essential do not include that catalog. The available software is centered on PlayStation-family and PSP classics rather than Nintendo’s NES library.

Sony describes selected classics with save-anytime and rewind interface features. Those functions can make older games more approachable, especially when you are learning an unfamiliar title or replaying a difficult section. They do not convert a PlayStation classic into an NES version, and they do not provide access to Nintendo exclusives.

2 Pack Wireless USB SNES Controller for Switch 1/2, Windows PC, Mac(Purple)
  • USB Wireless SNES Controller-fully compatible with Switch & Switch 2. Great for retro emulators on Windows PC, macOS, Linux and Raspberry Pi.
  • 2.4GHz Wireless: Stable 10m(33ft) range with zero-lag performance
  • Plug & Play: Standard USB receiver; no drivers needed for compatible devices
  • Responsive Controls: High-sensitivity buttons for precise retro gaming
  • Built-in rechargeable battery, 10-hour runtime

Choose this route when your primary console is a PS4 or PS5 and you want Sony’s historical catalog in the same subscription ecosystem. If your target is a particular NES game, verify the exact title and platform version in the current Classics Catalog before paying for Premium.

Ubisoft+ Classics: useful, but a different category

Ubisoft+ Classics belongs in a broader retro discussion because it can be reached through PlayStation subscription arrangements and through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It is a publisher catalog, however, not a system library and not an NES emulator service. Its value is access to selected older Ubisoft franchises on the platform you already use.

Do not choose Ubisoft+ Classics because a guide says it is an alternative to Nintendo Switch Online for NES games. It does not provide Nintendo’s NES catalog. Consider it only when the older Ubisoft games you want are the objective and your console and subscription channel support the service.

How to choose the best modern-console option

Start with the exact game

Write down the title, region, and version you want. “An NES game” can mean an original Nintendo release, a later remake, a PlayStation-era collection, or a publisher compilation. Search the current catalog on the platform you own rather than relying on a generic retro list.

Match the platform to the library

  • Want Nintendo NES software on a Switch? Start with Nintendo Switch Online and its NES/Nintendo Classics application.
  • Want PlayStation and PSP classics on a PS4 or PS5? Compare the current PlayStation Plus Premium Classics Catalog.
  • Want older Ubisoft franchises? Check Ubisoft+ Classics through the supported PlayStation or Xbox subscription route.
  • Want broader retro categories? Investigate the specific authorized collection or backward-compatibility program and confirm that your target game is listed.

Compare ownership and continuity

Subscription catalogs are convenient for exploring many games, but access follows membership rules and catalog changes. A one-time purchase, when a platform offers one, can provide more predictable long-term access; no individual-purchase option for NES ROMs on Switch is established. Treat each platform’s license model separately and read the current terms shown at checkout.

Consider controller compatibility

For NES games, a good digital directional pad can matter more than resolution or storage. Switch users can add Nintendo’s official NES-style controller where available to members in the United States and Canada. On other consoles, confirm whether the controller you prefer is supported before buying a service or accessory.

Check convenience features

Save-anytime and rewind are explicitly described by Sony for selected PlayStation classics. Nintendo’s service description confirms classic libraries and compatible online play, but the exact convenience controls are application- and title-dependent. Compare the features shown in each game’s menu rather than assuming all retro services behave identically.

Troubleshooting Switch access

The NES application is not visible in eShop

  • Confirm that you selected the user with the active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Check that the console is connected to the internet and that eShop can load other pages.
  • Verify your account region, because catalog and application availability can differ.
  • Install pending system updates and retry the search.

The application is installed but games are unavailable

  • Open the application with the account that owns the membership.
  • Check whether the membership has expired or changed status.
  • Review the current in-app catalog; a title may no longer be offered.
  • Restart the console and reconnect to the internet so the membership entitlement can be checked again.

A controller does not feel right

Try another compatible controller and verify the button layout in the game’s settings. If you are using detached Joy-Con controllers, attach them to the console or use a controller with a conventional directional pad. A dedicated NES-style Switch controller is the most direct solution when the original control layout is important.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online play does not work

First confirm that the specific title supports online play; Nintendo describes the feature as available only in compatible games. Then verify the active membership, internet connection, and any other player’s account access. A classic title without an online mode cannot be made multiplayer through a network setting.

Practical checklist before subscribing

  • Identify the exact NES title and region you need.
  • Open the current Nintendo Switch Online catalog and confirm that title is listed.
  • Check whether your Nintendo account has an active membership.
  • Confirm the classic-game application is available to your account and console.
  • Decide whether Joy-Con controls are sufficient or an NES-style controller is worthwhile.
  • Read the current regional price and renewal terms; no universal price is established here.
  • Remember that catalog availability can change while the application remains installed.
  • If you own only a PS4 or PS5, check Premium’s Classics Catalog instead of expecting Nintendo NES titles.
  • If your target is an older Ubisoft franchise, evaluate Ubisoft+ Classics through the supported PlayStation or Xbox route, not as an NES service.

Bottom line

For Nintendo NES games on a modern console, Nintendo Switch Online on Switch is the simplest and official answer: download the NES/Nintendo Classics app with an active membership, launch it from HOME, and choose a currently available game. An NES-style Switch controller can improve the feel, while compatible titles may add online play. The trade-off is subscription access and a catalog that Nintendo says can change.

PlayStation Plus Premium is a separate choice for PlayStation-family and PSP classics on PS4 and PS5, with save-anytime and rewind features described for selected games. Ubisoft+ Classics is a publisher catalog available through supported PlayStation and Xbox subscription channels, not a Nintendo library. Choose by exact title first, then by platform, membership model, controller support, and the features you will actually use.
