The simplest current route is Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection. It brings a curated selection of early arcade games, home versions and rarer releases to Windows PC and modern consoles, with documentary material and online features. It is not advertised as every Mortal Kombat release, so check the current title list if one particular game or port is essential.
PC players can use the Steam edition; console players should compare the exact PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo edition in their local store. Digital and physical formats, online-service subscriptions, regional availability and the included version can differ.

What you can play today
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection is the practical starting point for revisiting the series’ early years without locating obsolete hardware. Steam describes a package built from selected arcade games, well-known home versions and rarer releases. It also adds an interactive documentary with interviews and archival material, a historical timeline, character histories, unlockable secrets and configurable settings. Atari’s product information advertises online play and cross-play between the supported platforms.
Those descriptions establish a substantial historical collection, not a complete archive of every Mortal Kombat game, revision or home conversion. If you need a specific installment, regional version or arcade revision, verify that title in the current platform listing before buying. A store page can change as editions are updated, delisted or replaced.

Choose the right edition before you buy
When PC is the best fit
- You want the Steam version, Steam Cloud and Remote Play Together.
- You already have a compatible controller or want to play on a monitor with flexible display options.
- You want online PvP with the Steam version’s advertised rollback netcode.
- You prefer a download and do not need a physical case or cartridge.
When a console edition is more convenient
- You want to play from a television with minimal setup.
- You need couch multiplayer through shared-screen play or a console controller.
- You prefer a physical copy, where the platform and regional listing offer one.
- You want cross-play with friends but do not all use the same platform.
Digital versus physical
Digital editions are tied to the account and storefront used for purchase. A physical copy requires the correct console format and may be subject to stock or regional packaging. Atari’s standard-edition page lists physical versions for Switch 2, Switch, PS5 and Xbox; confirm the exact console label before ordering. Do not assume that a physical disc or card contains every version included in another platform’s download.
How to play on Windows PC through Steam
1. Check the hardware first
Steam lists the following requirements for the Windows edition. The minimum and recommended entries are not performance guarantees for every resolution or display setting; they are the store’s published baselines.
| Requirement | Minimum listed | Recommended listed |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit | Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i3-4100 or AMD A8-6600K | Intel Core i3-10100 or AMD Ryzen 3 4300G |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GeForce GTX 460 or Radeon R7 250X | GeForce GTX 950 or Radeon RX 550 |
| Storage | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| Internet | Not stated as a minimum in the listed specification | Broadband internet |
The requirements are reproduced from the Steam listing. Leave additional free space for operating-system updates and other installed games, and use the recommended tier as the safer target if you intend to play online or run other applications at the same time.
2. Install the game
- Open the Steam client and sign in to the account that will own the game.
- Open the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection store page, confirm that it is the Windows edition, and complete the purchase.
- Choose Library, select the collection, and choose Install. Select a drive with at least the listed 16 GB plus working space for your system.
- Launch it after installation and allow Steam to finish any first-run setup. Steam lists single-player, online PvP, shared-screen PvP, full controller support, Steam Cloud and Remote Play Together for this edition.
3. Configure controls and play modes
Connect a compatible controller before launching if you want a traditional fighting-game layout. Steam identifies full controller support, but button labels and menu behavior can still vary by controller and operating-system configuration. Test movement, blocking, attacks and menu navigation in a non-ranked or single-player mode before inviting another player.

- Dual Speakers for crisp arcade sound
- WiFi Leaderboards to challenge the world, Online Multiplayer
- Real feel Joysticks and Buttons
For local play, use the shared-screen option and connect the additional controller before selecting the second-player slot. For remote sessions, Steam’s Remote Play Together can be used where the host and participants meet the service’s account and network requirements. Online PvP is a separate mode from local play, and a stable broadband connection is the safer choice for both players.
How to play on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5
The PlayStation Store lists PS4 and PS5 editions. Open the listing from the console or the regional web store, then verify the edition label, included platform and any compatibility wording before purchase. The United States page is available at PlayStation Store; readers elsewhere should use their local storefront because price, age rating, language support and online terms can vary.
- Search the PlayStation Store for the collection and open the product page.
- Check whether the purchase is marked for PS4, PS5 or both, rather than relying on a search-result thumbnail.
- Review the current game list if you are buying for one particular classic release.
- Purchase and download the edition shown for your console, then start the collection from the game library.
- For online play, check the console’s current PlayStation account and multiplayer-service requirement shown at checkout or in the game’s network menu.
A PS5 owner should not infer that every PS4 entitlement, disc or save feature is identical to the PS5 edition. Use the store’s own edition description as the authority for the purchase you are making.
How to play on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
Nintendo UK lists the Switch download version with an October 30, 2025 release date. Atari’s physical standard-edition page lists Switch 2 and Switch formats. Open the Nintendo eShop or a local retailer’s product page and confirm the system printed in the title, because a Switch download, Switch physical card and Switch 2 product are not interchangeable labels.
- On Switch, open Nintendo eShop and search for Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection.
- Confirm the regional product page, release information and whether the listing is a download or a physical edition.
- Check the storage requirement shown by your local listing and ensure the console or microSD card has room for the download.
- For a physical purchase, match the card or package to Switch or Switch 2 before opening it.
- After installation, pair the controllers you intend to use and test local play before arranging an online session.
The Nintendo UK listing is not a universal price or availability statement. Use your own country’s eShop for the final purchase decision. The official Nintendo page is here.

How to play on Xbox
An official Xbox Store listing is available, and Atari’s physical standard-edition page includes Xbox. Because the retrieved listing does not establish a single console generation or a universal physical format, open the product page for your country and check the exact console name before buying.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the Xbox Store on the console or at the official product page.
- Confirm the supported Xbox console, edition and current game list.
- Purchase and install the digital version, or verify that a physical disc matches your console.
- For local play, connect the controllers before entering shared-screen modes.
- For online console multiplayer, read the current subscription notice. Xbox indicates that a Game Pass subscription tier is required and sold separately for console online multiplayer.
The subscription requirement is a platform rule, not evidence that the collection itself includes a subscription. Xbox may change which tier qualifies, so check the notice attached to your account and region at the time you play.
Online multiplayer and cross-play
Atari says players on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC can meet in online lobbies or Quick Play sessions through cross-play. Steam separately describes rollback netcode for its edition. These are game and network features; they do not remove account, broadband or platform-subscription requirements.
| Question | What is established | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Can different platforms play together? | Cross-play is advertised across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC. | Whether a particular regional edition or update is currently compatible. |
| Is online PvP available on PC? | Steam lists online PvP and rollback netcode. | Your connection quality, account status and any service outage. |
| Is a console subscription required? | Xbox states that console online multiplayer requires a separately sold Game Pass subscription tier. | Current PlayStation and Nintendo terms in your region, plus the qualifying Xbox tier. |
| Can everyone use local multiplayer? | Steam lists shared-screen PvP; console local options depend on the edition’s controls and menus. | Controller count, supported modes and the exact platform release. |
Before scheduling a cross-platform session, have every player update the game, sign in to the required platform account and confirm that cross-play is enabled in the network settings. If one player cannot see the lobby, first check that player’s edition, region, account permissions and online subscription rather than assuming the collection lacks cross-play.

- Rarer releases: less-common early versions included alongside the better-known editions.
- Historical extras: an interactive documentary, interviews, archival material, a timeline and character histories.
The package also advertises unlockable secret characters and settings you can alter. None of the official passages used here establishes a complete title-by-title inventory. Treat a claim such as “all classic games” cautiously: the collection is curated, and a particular arcade revision or home port may not be present. Check the current platform game list before buying for that one release.
Buying checklist for a specific classic game
- Name the exact target. Write down the installment, arcade or home version, and any regional or revision requirement.
- Open the current store page. Do not rely on a retailer headline or an old screenshot; editions can change.
- Read the included-content section. Confirm the target appears as a separately named game or version, not merely in a franchise description.
- Match the platform. Verify PS4 versus PS5, Switch versus Switch 2, the Xbox console label, or Windows PC.
- Choose digital or physical deliberately. A physical edition may be easier to resell or collect, while a download avoids disc or card stock issues.
- Check online needs. Distinguish the collection’s advertised online features from any platform subscription required to use them.
- Save the receipt and edition name. This helps support staff identify the exact product if a download, entitlement or disc is not recognized.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
The game will not install on PC
Compare your system with Steam’s published Windows requirements, especially the 64-bit operating system, memory, graphics card and 16 GB storage entry. Free additional space, restart Steam and retry the installation. If the store page is open in a browser, confirm that the purchase belongs to the same Steam account currently signed in to the client.
A controller is not responding
Reconnect the controller before launching, close other remapping utilities, and test it in Steam’s controller settings. The Steam edition lists full controller support, but a particular device can still be assigned incorrectly. If two players are using local play, connect both controllers before selecting the shared-screen mode.
You cannot find a friend online
Check that both players have the same current edition family, are signed in to their platform accounts and have cross-play enabled where the menu provides that option. Console players should verify the platform’s multiplayer subscription requirement; Xbox specifically identifies a separately sold Game Pass tier for console online multiplayer. If a lobby remains invisible, test a private or Quick Play session and check for a service outage.

Confirm that the package matches the console generation and region, and that the disc or card is inserted correctly. Atari’s listing covers Switch 2, Switch, PS5 and Xbox physical formats, but it does not make every format interchangeable. If the package label and console do not match, contact the retailer before opening or redeeming it.
A wanted classic is missing
Use the current platform-specific game list rather than assuming that a documentary reference or character history means the playable game is included. The collection is a selection of arcade, home and rarer releases. If the exact title or port is absent, you will need a legally available alternative release or original hardware; do not buy until the included-content description answers your question.
Which route should you choose?
| Your priority | Most suitable starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest setup friction on a computer | Steam | One Windows download with controller support, Steam Cloud and Remote Play Together. |
| Television play and a physical collection | Console edition | PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo listings provide dedicated console formats; physical availability varies by platform. |
| Playing with friends on different systems | Any supported edition with cross-play enabled | Atari advertises cross-play across PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and PC; verify regional and account requirements. |
| One exact arcade or home version | Whichever platform lists that version explicitly | The collection is curated, not a guaranteed complete catalog. |
| Offline single-player history | Any edition whose local game list suits you | Online subscriptions are not the deciding factor if you only use local and single-player content. |
Final decision
Start by checking Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection on the platform you already own. Choose Steam when Windows flexibility, controller support and PC online features matter; choose a console edition when television play, local multiplayer or a physical copy matters more. Before paying, confirm the exact system, format, regional store, included classic version and any online subscription. That five-point check prevents the most expensive mistake: buying the right franchise but the wrong edition for the game or hardware you actually want.
