You can play classic games through official subscription libraries, individual digital re-releases, or standalone collections. The right route depends on the specific game, your platform and region, whether you want to pay once or keep a subscription, and whether the game is downloaded or streamed. “Classic games” is not one universal catalog, and these official options do not establish a general legal rule for every old game or unofficial copy.
How can I play classic games legally?
Look for a current offering from the game’s publisher or your platform’s official store. In practice, the main options are a subscription library, a separately sold re-release, or a collection that bundles several games. Nintendo describes all three routes: Nintendo Classics, eShop releases, and packaged collections (Nintendo’s overview).
That is a practical way to find authorized access, not a universal legal test. The official listings discussed here describe what those companies offer; they do not determine the status of every emulator, ROM, backup, import, or older physical copy. For a specific legal question, consult authoritative guidance for your jurisdiction.

How do I access the classic games library?
There is no single classic-games library that covers every publisher or platform. Catalogs differ by service, plan, region, and title, and can change. Check the current local listing for the exact game rather than assuming that a system’s entire back catalog is available.

Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo says members have ongoing access to its NES, Super NES, and Game Boy classic libraries. Its support instructions also cover Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube libraries across Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, with membership requirements applying to several libraries. Which systems and games you can access depends on the applicable membership and platform; consult Nintendo’s access instructions and classic-games catalog.
Membership access is not the same as owning a separate copy of each game. Nintendo says an internet connection may be needed periodically to validate membership. It also says there is no set schedule for new releases, so do not choose a subscription on the assumption that a particular game will be added by a certain date (Nintendo’s FAQ).

PlayStation offers a Classics Catalog through PlayStation Plus, but access depends on the selected plan and whether the title is available in your region. The official PlayStation Plus catalog says PS3 classics in the catalog are streaming only. Check the game’s listing and make sure streaming works for your connection and setup before relying on that option.

Do I need a subscription or can I buy a collection?
No subscription is necessary if the game you want is sold separately or included in a standalone collection for your platform. A subscription can be useful when you want to explore a library, but access is tied to the service’s terms and catalog. A separate purchase avoids relying on a subscription catalog, though availability and compatibility still depend on the specific release.
Buy an individual re-release
A digital re-release is a direct option when you have a particular game in mind and it is sold for your system. Nintendo identifies its eShop as one route for classic titles, alongside Nintendo Classics and packaged collections. Availability is title- and territory-specific; there is no comprehensive list here of every current individual re-release. Search the official store for your console and confirm that the listing names the game and your platform.

- Capcom Classics Collection includes the following features -
- Experience more than 20 groundbreaking and revolutionary games of their time on one disk
- Hundreds of hours of nostalgic gameplay
- Enjoy a wealth of added features including original artwork, remixed music and playing tips
Choose a standalone collection
A collection bundles a curated set of games into one product. For example, Atari describes Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration as an interactive trip through 50 years of video-game history, with more than 100 playable classics and six new titles. Atari lists Nintendo Switch and PlayStation among its supported platforms. Check the specific platform listing for the edition and included content; a platform being listed does not by itself establish that every title or feature is identical across editions.

- Game: Confirm the exact title is included or sold. A system name or collection label does not guarantee a particular game.
- Platform and region: Verify the release works on your hardware and is available in your territory.
- Payment and access: Establish whether it requires a subscription or is a separate purchase, and whether ongoing membership validation applies.
- Delivery method: Check whether you download and run the game or stream it. PlayStation says PS3 classics in its Classics Catalog stream only.
- Hardware: Look for required accessories or compatibility conditions; Nintendo says Virtual Boy games require a dedicated accessory.
Official catalog details and subscription terms can change. Check the live listing before paying, especially if access method, region, or a specific included game is decisive.
