You can play a physical disc on a computer without an internal optical drive by connecting an external USB optical drive, using a drive that supports the disc format, and opening software that can play that format. A CD/DVD drive handles CDs and DVDs; Blu-ray playback requires a drive explicitly rated for Blu-ray plus Blu-ray-capable software. For standard high-definition Blu-ray, the display path may also need HDCP support.
What you need before you start
A missing internal drive is a hardware limitation, not a setting that software can overcome. A player application cannot read the disc until a physical optical reader is connected. Lenovo Support states: “An external optical drive will need to be purchased to run a CD or DVD.” The same principle applies to Blu-ray.
1. A physical external drive
Connect an external optical drive over USB. The drive must support the format on your disc. Many inexpensive external drives read CDs and DVDs but do not contain the blue-laser hardware required for Blu-ray. Look for the manufacturer’s supported-media list rather than relying on the words “external DVD drive” or “optical drive.”
2. Playback software for the format
Drive hardware and player software are separate requirements. A computer can recognize a Blu-ray drive while still lacking an application that decrypts and plays a Blu-ray movie. The Windows players described in Lenovo and HP support documentation do not play Blu-ray movies. Blu-ray therefore needs software that explicitly lists Blu-ray movie support for your operating system; availability, licensing and disc support can vary by version and region.

3. A compatible connection and adequate power
Use the cable supplied with the drive or the cable specified in its manual. External-drive packages differ: one ASUS Blu-ray drive guide from 2018 illustrates a package with multiple USB cable types, but that is an example of one model, not a universal current specification. Some drives draw all their power from USB, while others may require a second USB connection or an external power adapter. Follow the exact model’s instructions if the drive is not detected or the disc repeatedly stops spinning.
4. A suitable display chain for Blu-ray
For standard high-definition Blu-ray, HP identifies an HDCP-supporting monitor or HDTV as part of the playback requirements. HDCP is a copy-protection handshake between the player, computer output and display. A failure anywhere in that chain can prevent video even when the drive and software are otherwise compatible. Ultra HD Blu-ray has stricter, configuration-specific requirements and must be checked separately.
Match the drive to your disc
Identify the disc before buying hardware. The label, packaging or player-side markings normally indicate whether it is an audio or data CD, a DVD, a standard Blu-ray movie or an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Disc type | Drive requirement | Software requirement | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio or data CD | External CD/DVD drive or a drive that lists CD support | A CD-capable player or the application appropriate to the data | The computer still needs a physical reader; software alone cannot access the disc. |
| DVD movie or data DVD | External CD/DVD drive or a drive that lists DVD support | A DVD-capable player | Windows DVD Player support described by Lenovo applies to DVD movies in its Windows 10 context, not Blu-ray. |
| Standard Blu-ray movie | External drive whose specifications explicitly list Blu-ray | Software that explicitly supports Blu-ray movies | HP also identifies an HDCP-supporting monitor or HDTV for high-definition playback. |
| Ultra HD Blu-ray | Drive explicitly certified or specified for Ultra HD Blu-ray | Software and a PC configuration that the vendor currently lists for Ultra HD Blu-ray | Do not assume that a standard Blu-ray drive, player or display will handle UHD discs. |
Why a DVD drive may not play Blu-ray
CDs and DVDs use different optical technology from Blu-ray. A drive marketed only for CD/DVD media may accept those discs while rejecting a Blu-ray disc or showing it as unreadable. HP’s guidance is explicit that the optical drive must be Blu-ray-compatible for Blu-ray movie playback. Check the exact model number and supported media types before ordering.

One drive for all three formats
If you want to use CDs, DVDs and standard Blu-rays, select a Blu-ray drive whose specifications also list CD and DVD reading. Blu-ray support does not, by itself, tell you every other format the drive accepts. If you occasionally use Ultra HD Blu-rays, look for that format specifically; “Blu-ray” alone is not enough.
How to set up the external drive
- Identify the disc. Record whether it is a CD, DVD, standard Blu-ray or Ultra HD Blu-ray. Treat a UHD disc as a separate compatibility project.
- Check the drive specification. Confirm the exact model lists the target format and the operating system you intend to use. For an all-purpose purchase, verify CD, DVD and standard Blu-ray support individually.
- Connect the drive directly to the computer. Use the supplied or specified USB cable. If the manual calls for two USB plugs, connect both; if it specifies an external adapter, use that adapter. Avoid diagnosing playback until the operating system can see the drive.
- Allow the operating system to recognize it. Wait for the drive to appear in the system’s device list or file browser. A visible drive does not prove that movie playback software is installed; it only confirms that the hardware connection is working at a basic level.
- Install or open suitable playback software. Use a player that explicitly supports the disc format and your operating-system version. For Blu-ray movies, a generic media player or a DVD-only application is not sufficient unless its current documentation specifically adds Blu-ray support.
- Insert the disc. Place it label-side up when using a tray-loading drive, or follow the slot-loading drive’s markings. Automatic launch is not guaranteed. If nothing opens, start the player manually and select the external drive from its Open Disc, Source or equivalent command.
- Choose the correct title or track. A movie disc normally opens through its menu; an audio CD may appear as tracks; a data disc should be opened in the file browser or the application associated with its files. The available choices depend on the disc and player.
- Eject from the operating system or player. Stop playback before pressing the drive’s eject button or disconnecting the USB cable. Removing a disc while it is being read can interrupt playback or leave an application in an error state.
Windows-specific behavior and limitations
Lenovo’s Windows-focused support article describes Windows 10 behavior that is easy to misunderstand. Windows Media Player is included with the Windows 10 desktop, but the article says it no longer plays DVDs. The Windows DVD Player app is described as playing DVD movies, not Blu-ray. Blu-ray playback therefore requires a Blu-ray-capable drive and a non-Microsoft program that supports Blu-ray.
HP likewise says Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center do not play Blu-ray movies in Windows and notes that systems without preinstalled software may need a third-party solution. These statements describe the referenced Windows support context, not a guarantee for every future Windows release, edition or regional store listing. Check the current requirements for the exact Windows version and player before purchasing a drive or software license.
If Windows does not show the drive
- Reconnect the USB cable at both ends and try a different USB port.
- If the model uses two USB connections or an external adapter, connect the required power source.
- Check whether the drive appears in Windows’ device or file-management interface.
- Test with a known-good CD or DVD if the drive is supposed to support those formats.
- Consult the drive manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and Windows version.
macOS and Linux considerations
The available manufacturer material does not establish a dependable, current, named player recommendation for macOS or Linux. The hardware steps remain the same: use an external drive with the required media support, connect it according to the model’s manual, and verify that the operating system recognizes it. Then check the playback application’s official requirements, licensing terms and Blu-ray support for your specific operating-system version.

Do not assume that software advertised for Windows also supports macOS or Linux, or that a program that opens data files can play a protected movie disc. For Blu-ray, confirm support before buying a license. If a vendor lists only DVD or ordinary media playback, that does not establish Blu-ray compatibility.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Standard Blu-ray versus Ultra HD Blu-ray
Standard high-definition Blu-ray
For a standard Blu-ray movie, the basic chain is a Blu-ray-capable external optical drive, Blu-ray playback software and a display path that meets the player’s copy-protection requirements. HP identifies HDCP support on the monitor or HDTV as a high-definition Blu-ray requirement. Check the computer’s video output, any adapter or dock in the path, the cable and the display when playback fails with a protection or black-screen message.
Ultra HD Blu-ray
Ultra HD Blu-ray is not simply a higher-resolution version of an ordinary Blu-ray workflow. CyberLink’s Ultra HD Blu-ray documentation describes one specific PowerDVD configuration involving certified Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drives, HDCP 2.2 display output and additional platform constraints. That page lists older Windows and Intel generations, so it should not be treated as a universal specification for current computers or for all Blu-ray playback.
If your disc is marked 4K or Ultra HD Blu-ray, check the current requirements from the software vendor and the drive manufacturer for your exact computer, graphics output, display and operating-system version. Do not buy a standard external Blu-ray drive on the assumption that it will read UHD discs.

Choosing an external drive: the checks that matter
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Supported formats | CD, DVD, standard Blu-ray and, where needed, explicit Ultra HD Blu-ray support | A drive that reads DVDs is not automatically a Blu-ray drive, and standard Blu-ray support is not automatically UHD support. |
| USB connection | Connector type and whether the included cable fits your computer | External packages can include different cable arrangements. |
| Power | Bus-powered operation, a second USB plug or an external adapter as specified by the model | Insufficient power can cause disconnects, failed spins or unreadable discs. |
| Playback software | Whether a suitable player is included, separately licensed or must be obtained | Drive hardware does not supply Blu-ray playback automatically. |
| Operating-system support | The manufacturer’s current statement for your Windows, macOS or Linux version | Compatibility can change by operating-system release and software version. |
| Display chain | HDCP support for applicable standard Blu-ray playback; current UHD requirements where relevant | The drive and player can work while the protected video path still fails. |
Speed, noise, reliability and price are model-specific. Without current product-level specifications or testing, they are not useful grounds for declaring one external drive universally better than another.
Troubleshooting when a disc will not play
Work from the physical connection toward the software and display. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to identify the actual fault.
The computer does not detect the drive
- Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, then try another port.
- Apply the model’s specified power arrangement, including a second USB connection or adapter if required.
- Check the drive in the operating system before inserting a disc.
- Review the manufacturer’s instructions for drivers, firmware or operating-system limitations specific to that model.
The drive is detected but the disc is not
- Confirm that the drive’s supported-media list includes the disc type.
- Try a known-good disc of a format the drive is supposed to read.
- Inspect the problem disc for dirt, scratches, cracks or warping and clean it according to the disc maker’s guidance.
- Check whether the disc is Ultra HD Blu-ray rather than standard Blu-ray.
The disc appears, but the player will not start it
- Verify that the player supports the exact format, not merely generic media files.
- For Blu-ray movies, use software that explicitly lists Blu-ray support; a DVD-only application is insufficient.
- Open the player manually and select the external drive instead of waiting for autoplay.
- Check the player’s current operating-system and licensing requirements.
Blu-ray video is black, blocked or reports a protection error
- Confirm that the drive is Blu-ray-capable and that the software supports Blu-ray movies.
- Check the monitor or HDTV for HDCP support as HP recommends for high-definition Blu-ray.
- Trace the entire video path, including docks, adapters, receivers and cables, because any link can affect the protected signal.
- If the disc is UHD, stop applying ordinary Blu-ray assumptions and verify the current UHD configuration requirements for the exact hardware and software.
Playback stops or the drive disconnects
- Use the cable and power arrangement specified for the drive.
- Try a direct USB connection rather than an unpowered hub.
- Test another disc to distinguish a media problem from a drive or power problem.
- Check for dirt or physical damage on the disc and follow the drive maker’s support procedure if the fault persists.
Quick decision guide
- Only CDs: An external CD/DVD drive and a CD-capable player are usually the narrowest hardware match.
- CDs and DVDs: Choose an external drive whose specifications list both formats, then use DVD-capable software for movie DVDs.
- CDs, DVDs and standard Blu-rays: Choose a Blu-ray drive that also lists CD and DVD support, obtain Blu-ray-capable software, and check the HDCP display path.
- Ultra HD Blu-rays: Treat the purchase as a full configuration check. Confirm explicit UHD drive support and current software, operating-system, graphics-output and display requirements before spending money.
Bottom line
The reliable solution is an external USB optical drive matched to the disc, plus software that supports that format. CDs and DVDs can use a compatible CD/DVD drive; Blu-ray movies require an explicitly Blu-ray-capable drive and Blu-ray software; standard high-definition playback may also require HDCP support. A 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray needs separate, current verification of the complete PC and display configuration.
