The best way to play an old game depends on the exact title, the system it was made for, and whether you can get the game through an authorized modern release, working original media, or a lawful emulation setup. Start by identifying those details; then check compatibility, system-file requirements, display connections, and the rules where you live. Rarity alone does not make a game file or system BIOS legal to download.

Start by identifying the game and its original platform

Before choosing an emulator, buying an adapter, or searching for a download, write down what you are trying to play and what it originally ran on. “The game” may not identify one compatible version: releases can differ by region, hardware revision, or the service they depend on.

  • Title and release: Record the full game title and, if known, its release region or edition.
  • Original system: Identify the console or computer, including its hardware revision if you know it. Compatibility can depend on the particular platform and emulator core.
  • Media or access method: Note whether the game came on a cartridge, optical disc, diskette, or as a digital download tied to an account or online service.
  • What you have: Check whether you have the original game media, a working system and controller, or access to a current official release.
  • Your modern setup: List your computer or other host, operating system, display inputs, and any original hardware you want to use.

These details determine which route is practical. There is no reliable universal compatibility answer for “old games”: the game and platform have to be checked together.

Choose a route that fits your game and equipment

There are three main options: an authorized modern release, original hardware with the original game media, or emulation on a modern host. Which one is best depends on availability, lawful access to the required files, setup effort, compatibility, and whether you need original peripherals or online services.

  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Route What it requires What to check What is not established universally
Authorized modern release A current version offered by the rightsholder or an authorized store in your territory. Whether the exact game is currently available where you live and whether its features meet your needs. Availability, price, compatibility, and feature differences are title- and territory-specific; no particular listing is established here.
Original hardware and media A working original console or computer, readable game media, power supply, and any required controller or peripheral. Whether the system reads the media and whether its video output can reach your display through a suitable signal path. No universal adapter recommendation or display compatibility result is established; system output, revision, region, latency, scaling, and TV inputs can matter.
Emulator or game-engine core on a modern host A compatible host, an emulator or engine core, and game content you are entitled to use. Some cores also require system BIOS files. The selected core’s compatibility notes, file requirements, and instructions for loading the game. Compatibility, accuracy, performance, and required files depend on the specific game, core, and host; no title-specific results are established.

Check for an authorized release first

Look for a current version from the game’s rightsholder or a store authorized to sell it in your region. It may provide the simplest setup if it supports your device and preserves the features you want. Confirm that the listing is for the right game and territory; a release for a related title or a different edition may not be interchangeable. No particular game or storefront can be recommended without knowing the title.

Use original hardware when it is available and working

If you have the system and readable original media, playing on that platform avoids selecting an emulator core and may let you use original controllers or peripherals. It still requires a display connection that works with the system’s output. Do not assume that every old console can connect directly to a current TV, or that a converter will work equally well with every revision. Check the specific system’s output and the display’s inputs before choosing a signal path.

Emulate when the files and setup are suitable

Emulation can let a modern computer run software intended for older hardware, but it is a configuration, not a single universal application that includes every game and system component. A frontend can make it easier to organize or launch compatible software, while the emulator or game-engine core does the work for a particular platform or game. You still need to check the core’s requirements and supply game content lawfully.

How a computer-based emulation setup fits together

RetroArch’s documentation describes it as “a frontend for emulators, game engines and media players.” In practical terms, the frontend is the interface you use to select and launch software; a separately installed compatible core provides the emulation or game-engine functionality. RetroArch is not a bundle containing every emulator and game. Its documentation explains the arrangement in Understanding RetroArch and describes how to load games in Starting a Game.

  1. Find the exact platform and game version. Use the title, release region, and original system you recorded to identify the relevant platform. Avoid selecting a core based only on a broad description such as “retro console.”
  2. Choose a frontend if you want one. A frontend can organize compatible cores and games, but it is optional in the general sense: follow the selected emulator or core’s own installation and launch instructions.
  3. Install a compatible core or emulator. Check its current official documentation for supported systems, host requirements, and game-file formats. Do not assume one core supports every revision or game for a platform.
  4. Check for BIOS or other system-file requirements. Requirements differ by core. If a core needs a BIOS, consult its documentation for the correct file and location, and use only a file you are entitled to use.
  5. Load game content using the core’s instructions. RetroArch documents loading games, including original CD games, but the appropriate method and supported files depend on the core. Use its current guide rather than assuming every disc or file will work.
  6. Connect and configure controls. Follow the frontend or core instructions for controller input. A compatible gamepad may be useful, but no particular model has been tested or verified here.
  7. Test the actual game and features you need. Check whether the title launches and whether required modes, peripherals, or online features work. Successful launch does not establish that every game feature is supported.

For each step, the selected core’s official documentation takes precedence over generic instructions: file naming, supported formats, BIOS needs, and compatibility are not universal.

Do you need a BIOS to emulate a game?

Sometimes. A BIOS is a system file associated with a console or computer; some emulator cores require one, while others may not. The answer depends on the core and platform you choose, so check the core’s current documentation before setting up the game. A BIOS requirement is separate from the game file itself.

Libretro states that “RetroArch and LibRetro do not share any copyrighted system files or game content.” Its BIOS guide directs users to provide their own content in accordance with local law. Do not treat a BIOS download site as official or assume a file is lawful to use because it is easy to find. The same caution applies to game files: rarity or the absence of a commercial release does not by itself grant permission to download, copy, or distribute them.

Getting an old system onto a modern TV

Whether original hardware can connect to a modern display depends on the output available from that particular system and the inputs supported by the display. You may need a compatible signal path, but a generic promise that a particular adapter works for “retro consoles” is not enough to establish that it suits your system.

  1. Identify the system’s video output. Check the documentation or markings for the exact console or computer revision rather than guessing from its name alone.
  2. Check the TV’s available inputs. Confirm which input types the display accepts and whether the intended connection can carry the system’s signal.
  3. Verify compatibility for the whole path. Consider region and hardware revision as well as the system output and display input. No specific adapter or converter is verified here.
  4. Consider how the result will feel and look. Scaling and latency can affect play, and the answer can vary with the hardware and display. Check the requirements of the game if timing or a peripheral matters.
  5. Test before committing to a setup. Confirm that the system produces a stable picture and usable sound, and that the controller and game work as intended.

If you do not have original hardware, emulation may be an alternative, but it still requires a compatible core and game content you are entitled to use. Neither route is universally simpler: the right choice depends on the system, media, display, and files available to you.

What to know about legality in the United States

Game ownership, access to a game file, and permission to circumvent copy protection are not the same question. The U.S. Copyright Office’s overview says Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act generally bars circumvention of technological measures controlling access to copyrighted works, subject to limited exemptions determined through a triennial process. An exemption is scoped; it should not be read as blanket permission to download, copy, or distribute games. See the 2024 proceeding and the 2027 proceeding.

The 2027-cycle page states that renewed exemptions remain in force for October 2027 through October 2030. As of October 13, 2026, that cycle is in progress, so proposed or renewed scope should not be treated as a final settled rule without checking the applicable final rule text. Materials or petitions on the 2024 proceeding page are not, by themselves, enacted exemptions.

Section 108 of Title 17 contains limited provisions for qualifying libraries and archives, including conditional reproduction to replace works that are damaged, deteriorating, lost, or in obsolete formats. Those conditions apply to eligible institutions and circumstances; they do not create a general individual right to copy any game. “Obsolete” in this context should not be casually treated as a broad permission to circumvent access controls or obtain files.

This is U.S.-specific context, not a conclusion about the law in every country. The answer can depend on where you live, how you obtained the game and system files, access controls, license terms, and the purpose of the use. For a decision about a particular game, check current law or consult qualified counsel.

Preserving a game is different from setting up a personal play session

For institutional preservation, the Library of Congress recommends a game distribution file and related materials, together with a virtual or emulated platform where available. Where an emulated platform is unavailable, it says original hardware with controllers and a power supply can be acceptable. Its Recommended Formats Statement for software and video games is preservation guidance, not a general consumer copying license.

That guidance also shows why a game file alone may not preserve the experience or the information needed to use it. Preserve relevant documentation and platform information alongside game materials when working in an institutional preservation context. The applicable access, copying, and circumvention rules still matter; a preservation purpose does not automatically answer those legal questions for an individual.

Troubleshoot by checking the part that is failing

The game does not appear or load

  • Confirm that you selected a core intended for the game’s original platform and that the core supports the game’s format.
  • Follow the core’s instructions for loading the specific media or file type. A guide for one core may not apply to another.
  • If the core requires a BIOS, check its documentation for the required file and placement. Do not substitute an unverified download.
  • If you are using original media, check whether the original system reads it and whether the media is in usable condition.

The emulator opens but the game behaves incorrectly

  • Check the core’s compatibility notes for the game and relevant system revision.
  • Confirm that you have the intended regional or edition-specific release.
  • Check whether a required peripheral, system file, or online service is part of the experience. A successful launch alone does not prove those features will work.

The original system has no usable picture on the TV

  • Recheck the exact system output and display inputs, including any revision-specific differences.
  • Verify the compatibility of the complete signal path rather than assuming a converter will work with every console.
  • Check power, cables, and display input selection, then test the system and media independently if possible.

A digital release or game feature depends on a server or account

Check the rightsholder’s current information for the exact game and service. A game tied to account authentication or a network service may depend on that service still operating; the title alone does not establish that it can be played offline or recovered through emulation. Do not assume that ended server support gives permission to bypass access controls or obtain copies.

A practical decision checklist

  • Want the least setup? First see whether the rightsholder offers an authorized current release for your device and territory.
  • Have working original media and hardware? Confirm that the system reads the media and that its video output can reach your display through a compatible path.
  • Using a modern computer? Pick a core for the exact platform, read its current requirements, and confirm its BIOS and game-file needs before setting up the frontend.
  • Missing game or system files? Do not treat rarity, ownership of a physical copy, or a preservation interest as automatic permission to download, copy, or circumvent. Check the law and applicable license terms where you live.
  • Preserving material institutionally? Keep related documentation and platform information with the game materials, and follow the Library of Congress guidance and the rules that apply to your institution.

For an old game on a new computer, the practical route is a compatible emulator or engine core plus lawfully obtained game content, with a BIOS only if that core requires one. For an obsolete console on a modern TV, the answer turns on the exact hardware output and display inputs. Identify the game first, then choose the route whose compatibility, files, and legal conditions you can verify.
