Yes, you can watch a 3D Blu-ray on an ordinary PC monitor, but the monitor does not create stereoscopic 3D by itself. The practical workaround is Anaglyph Red/Cyan: compatible Blu-ray 3D software converts the two views into a red-and-cyan image, and you watch through matching red/cyan glasses. You need a Blu-ray-capable optical drive, a player edition that supports Blu-ray 3D and anaglyph output, the correct glasses, and an HDCP-compliant digital display connection.
What you need before you start
Check every item below before buying software or troubleshooting. Ordinary Blu-ray playback and Blu-ray 3D playback are separate capabilities, so a player that opens a conventional Blu-ray is not automatically suitable for a 3D disc.
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Blu-ray optical drive | Internal or external drive identified as BD-ROM, BD-RE, or a compatible Blu-ray combo drive | A DVD-only drive cannot read a Blu-ray movie. |
| Playback software | The exact edition explicitly supports Blu-ray 3D disc playback and Anaglyph Red/Cyan output | General Blu-ray support does not prove 3D support. |
| Display | Your existing monitor connected through a supported digital path | Protected Blu-ray video can require HDCP-compliant output. |
| Glasses | Red/cyan anaglyph glasses that match the player’s selected mode | The filters separate the two views for your eyes. |
| Settings | 3D playback enabled, Anaglyph Red/Cyan selected, and eye order correct | An incorrect mode can produce a doubled or uncomfortable picture. |
Check the optical drive
Look at the drive label, the computer’s specifications, or the operating system’s device information. It must identify Blu-ray support, not merely DVD or CD support. A Super Multi Blu combo drive is one example of the required class. If the computer has no internal drive, an external USB Blu-ray drive can work, provided its specifications say it supports Blu-ray movie discs and your operating system.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that any USB optical drive is suitable. DVD-only external drives are common and cannot read the larger-capacity Blu-ray format.

Confirm the software edition, not just the product name
Before purchasing or installing a player, look for two separate claims in the vendor’s documentation:
- Blu-ray 3D disc playback.
- A display mode named Anaglyph Red/Cyan, red/cyan anaglyph, or equivalent.
CyberLink’s older PowerDVD PC Mode Help documents the no-3D-display workflow and says that, when supported, PowerDVD can play 3D content in Anaglyph Red/Cyan mode with red/cyan glasses. The same help also notes that Blu-ray 3D may depend on the PowerDVD version or edition. CyberLink’s current product specification page lists Blu-ray disc playback, but it does not establish that every currently sold edition still offers Blu-ray 3D disc playback or red/cyan output. Treat older manuals as evidence of a historical feature, not as proof that a current license includes it. Verify the exact edition with the vendor before paying.
Why a normal monitor can show this kind of 3D
A normal flat panel displays one two-dimensional image. It does not independently send a left-eye view to one eye and a right-eye view to the other. Anaglyph works around that limitation in software:
- The player decodes the stereoscopic Blu-ray content into separate left and right views.
- It combines those views into differently colored channels, normally red and cyan.
- The red/cyan glasses filter the image so each eye receives the intended view.
- Your visual system combines the views and perceives depth.
This is a color-filtered presentation, not the same as a full-color 3D-ready television, monitor, or headset. The method is useful when you want to use an existing monitor, but it cannot provide the same color or display characteristics as a dedicated stereoscopic system.
Step-by-step: play the disc in Anaglyph Red/Cyan mode
1. Connect a supported display path
Connect the PC directly to the monitor with a digital connection supported by the player and display. CyberLink’s documentation identifies DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort as output paths for protected Blu-ray playback when HDCP requirements are met. A direct connection is the safest assumption.
Avoid building the setup around an unverified adapter, splitter, capture device, or remote-display path. Such equipment can interrupt the protected video handshake, and the player may refuse to show the movie even if ordinary desktop video appears normally.
2. Install a player edition that explicitly supports Blu-ray 3D
Install the player, restart the computer if its installer requests it, and open its edition or feature information. Confirm that Blu-ray 3D is included. If the software documentation only says “Blu-ray playback,” do not interpret that as 3D support.

For PowerDVD specifically, historical PowerDVD 16 help describes the anaglyph option, while PowerDVD 18 help documents related 3D settings and safety guidance. Those documents do not guarantee that a current PowerDVD edition has the same feature set. Check the current edition’s specification or obtain written confirmation from the vendor.
3. Insert the 3D Blu-ray
Put the disc in the Blu-ray drive and open it from the player’s disc command. If the disc is not detected, first confirm that the drive is actually Blu-ray-capable and that the operating system sees it. A DVD drive, even one that can play ordinary DVDs perfectly, will not read the Blu-ray data layer.
4. Open the player’s 3D display preferences
Open the player’s settings or preferences and locate the 3D display configuration. In the documented PowerDVD workflow, this is under the 3D display preferences. Version-specific labels can differ, so look for terms such as 3D display, 3D mode, output type, or display configuration.
Enable 3D playback if the player presents it as a separate switch. Then choose Anaglyph Red/Cyan as the display mode. Do not choose a shutter-glasses, polarized, headset, or other display mode unless you own the matching hardware.

5. Put on matching red/cyan glasses
Use glasses made for red/cyan anaglyph output. The two lenses are not interchangeable with glasses designed for another 3D system. Hold the glasses in the normal orientation, with the red filter over the eye specified by the player’s mode.
Cheap paper glasses can demonstrate the effect, but the important characteristic is the filter pairing, not the frame style. The glasses must match the software’s color scheme; red/green or another combination will not correctly decode red/cyan output.
6. Start playback and correct the eye order if necessary
Start the movie and check whether foreground objects look in front of the screen and background objects recede naturally. If the scene looks inside-out, severely doubled, or causes immediate discomfort, pause the movie and inspect the eye-order setting. CyberLink’s 3D guide documents a swap eye option for reversing the left/right assignment. Enable it only when the views are reversed, then test again.

Commercial Blu-ray titles use copy protection. The player may require an HDCP-compliant digital output before it will display the protected movie. CyberLink describes compliant DVI, HDMI, or DisplayPort output for protected Blu-ray playback and lists HDCP-compliant digital output among its requirements.
That requirement applies even though the final picture is being rendered as anaglyph. Converting the picture to red/cyan does not remove the disc’s protection requirements. If the player reports an output or authorization error:
- Connect the PC directly to the monitor.
- Use a digital port supported by both devices.
- Remove splitters, capture hardware, and unnecessary adapters.
- Power-cycle the monitor and restart the player so the HDCP handshake is renegotiated.
- Test with the monitor’s native digital input rather than a remote or streamed display.
No general promise can be made that every adapter, dock, capture device, or remote-desktop arrangement will pass protected Blu-ray video.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The disc is not recognized
- Confirm that the optical drive is BD-ROM, BD-RE, or a Blu-ray combo drive.
- Try another known-good Blu-ray disc to distinguish a disc problem from a drive limitation.
- If the computer uses an external drive, check its USB connection and the drive’s stated operating-system compatibility.
- Do not continue adjusting 3D settings until the player can read the disc.
The player opens the disc but only offers 2D playback
This usually means that the installed edition supports ordinary Blu-ray playback without supporting Blu-ray 3D, or that 3D playback is disabled in preferences. Recheck the edition’s feature list and the 3D playback switch. A product page that says only “Blu-ray playback” is not sufficient evidence of 3D support.
There is no Anaglyph Red/Cyan option
The installed edition may not include anaglyph output, the player may be in a non-3D mode, or the option may appear only after a 3D disc is inserted. Look in the 3D display preferences while the disc is loaded. If the setting is still absent, do not assume that a hidden driver will add it; verify whether that exact edition supports the mode.
The picture is doubled or depth appears reversed
- Confirm that the glasses are red/cyan and are being worn in the intended orientation.
- Recheck that Anaglyph Red/Cyan, rather than another anaglyph color pairing, is selected.
- Use the player’s swap-eye control if the depth looks inverted.
- Pause immediately if the image remains uncomfortable.
The image is black, blocked, or replaced by an error
Check the HDCP path first. Connect directly to the monitor using HDMI, DisplayPort, or supported DVI, and remove intermediate devices. If the desktop works but the protected movie does not, the failure is consistent with an output-protection or authorization problem rather than a 3D setting.

The glasses do not produce a convincing 3D effect
Make sure the software output and lenses use the same color pairing. Anaglyph glasses for a different color system cannot decode red/cyan correctly. Also check eye order and remember that anaglyph is inherently color-filtered; muted or altered color is expected compared with ordinary playback.
Budget and buying decisions
The total cost depends on what is already in the computer. If it has a Blu-ray drive and a compatible player, the only physical purchase may be red/cyan glasses. If it has no Blu-ray drive, add an external USB Blu-ray drive rather than a DVD-only model. Software cost varies by edition and seller, so confirm features before treating a low-priced license as a bargain.
Do not buy a 3D television or gaming headset simply because a product listing says “3D.” Those systems may use shutter, polarized, or headset-specific presentation and are not substitutes for the red/cyan mode described here. Conversely, inexpensive anaglyph glasses are useful only when the player can actually render Anaglyph Red/Cyan.
For a software purchase, compare the exact edition, Blu-ray 3D support, anaglyph output, operating-system compatibility, and return or trial terms. A general media-player license that omits Blu-ray 3D does not become suitable because the computer has a powerful graphics processor.
Compatibility checks before installation
- Write down the optical drive model and confirm that it reads Blu-ray movie discs.
- Identify the monitor’s available digital inputs and whether the PC can drive one directly.
- Read the player’s current feature list for both Blu-ray 3D and Anaglyph Red/Cyan.
- Check whether Blu-ray 3D is enabled only in a higher edition.
- Confirm that your operating system is listed for the drive and player.
- Have the glasses in hand before testing, and verify which lens is red.
These checks separate three commonly confused layers: the drive reads the disc, the player decodes and renders it, and the display path is allowed to show protected video. Fixing one layer does not automatically fix the others.
Choosing among the three practical routes
| Route | Additional hardware | Software requirement | Best suited to | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red/cyan anaglyph on the existing monitor | Blu-ray drive and red/cyan glasses | Edition with Blu-ray 3D and Anaglyph Red/Cyan output | Someone who wants to use a normal monitor | Color-filtered image; edition support is version-dependent |
| Dedicated 3D display | 3D-ready monitor or television and its compatible glasses | Player and disc support for that display system | Someone who already owns compatible 3D hardware | Requires matched display hardware and still needs HDCP compliance |
| Ordinary 2D playback | Blu-ray drive only, plus display | Software capable of standard Blu-ray playback | Someone who only needs to watch the movie | Does not provide stereoscopic depth |
Use the anaglyph route when avoiding a new 3D display is more important than preserving full-color presentation. Choose a dedicated 3D display only when the display, glasses, player, and protected-output path are all compatible. Choose 2D when the priority is simply viewing the film and 3D is optional.
What this setup can and cannot promise
What it can do
- Show a Blu-ray 3D movie as a stereoscopic red/cyan image on an ordinary monitor.
- Use a software-rendered mode instead of replacing the monitor.
- Work with an external USB Blu-ray drive when that drive and the player support the disc and computer.
What it cannot do
- Make the monitor generate separate full-color views without software and glasses.
- Turn ordinary Blu-ray support into Blu-ray 3D support.
- Guarantee that a currently sold player edition includes an old feature documented in a historical manual.
- Bypass HDCP restrictions on protected discs.
- Provide a full-color, full-quality dedicated 3D presentation. The documented sources establish the viewing mode and glasses requirement, not a comparative quality measurement.
Final pre-playback checklist
- The optical drive is identified as Blu-ray-capable.
- The player edition explicitly lists Blu-ray 3D disc playback.
- The same edition explicitly lists Anaglyph Red/Cyan output.
- 3D playback is enabled in the player.
- The display mode is set to Anaglyph Red/Cyan.
- Red/cyan glasses match the selected mode.
- The monitor is connected directly through a supported HDCP-compliant digital output.
- The eye order has been checked, with swap-eye available if depth is reversed.
- Playback is stopped if headache, dizziness, nausea, blurry eyesight, or other symptoms occur.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watch a 3D Blu-ray on a normal monitor?
Yes, if a compatible player can render the disc as Anaglyph Red/Cyan and you wear matching red/cyan glasses. The monitor itself does not create separate stereoscopic views.

Will any Blu-ray player app work?
No. Ordinary Blu-ray playback and Blu-ray 3D playback are different features, and anaglyph output is a separate requirement. Check the exact edition’s documentation.
Do I need a 3D monitor for the anaglyph method?
No. An ordinary monitor is sufficient for the red/cyan image, but the software and glasses are essential.
Can a DVD drive read a 3D Blu-ray?
No. The computer needs a BD-ROM, BD-RE, Blu-ray combo, or compatible external USB Blu-ray drive.

The Bottom Line
To play a 3D Blu-ray on a PC without a 3D monitor, use a Blu-ray-capable drive and a player edition that explicitly supports Blu-ray 3D plus Anaglyph Red/Cyan output. Connect the monitor directly through an HDCP-compliant digital path, select the anaglyph mode, and wear matching red/cyan glasses. Confirm current edition support before buying: historical PowerDVD instructions document the method, but older manuals do not guarantee that a currently sold edition includes it.
