Yes—you can play 7 Days to Die with friends without renting a dedicated server. One player starts the world from the game client and becomes the peer-to-peer host. Friends join that live session through the multiplayer or server browser. The important limitation is persistence: the world is available only while the host is playing, and everyone is disconnected when the host quits, crashes, or loses the connection. A dedicated server is necessary only when the group needs a world that stays online independently of its original host.

What “without a dedicated server” means

In a normal co-op session, the game client does two jobs on the host’s computer: it renders the host’s game and provides the session authority that connects the other players. This is usually called peer-to-peer (P2P) hosting. It is not restricted to players on the same home network. An official Fun Pimps forum explanation describes peer-to-peer as multiplayer started through the client and open to remote connections, provided the session is visible to other players.

The other players connect to the host’s running game rather than to a separate, headless server process. That removes server-rental fees and avoids installing and maintaining a second application, but it also makes the host a single point of failure.

The world is available only while the host is playing

The host must keep the session running. If the host returns to the menu, closes the game, crashes, or loses the relevant network connection, the peer-to-peer world ends for everyone. The saved world is not deleted; the host can start it again later with Continue Game, but friends cannot enter it while that host is offline.

This differs from a dedicated server, which runs independently of any player’s game client. A dedicated server can remain online overnight or while the usual host is unavailable.

What you need before starting

Check these conditions before troubleshooting invitations. A mismatch in any one of them can prevent discovery or joining.

Requirement What to verify Why it matters
Game edition and build Every player is running the same current edition and compatible build. Different builds can use incompatible networking or save formats.
Multiplayer configuration Players use compatible anti-cheat, mod, and cross-play settings. Modified files or incompatible settings can hide a session or reject a connection.
Host connection The host has a stable broadband connection with enough upload capacity. All players’ traffic depends on the host’s connection.
Client hardware The host meets the game’s published requirements and has resources available for hosting and rendering. The host performs both gameplay and networking work on one machine.
Platform privacy and network access Firewall, NAT, account privacy, and platform multiplayer permissions allow online play. Local security or privacy blocks can prevent discovery even when the game itself is configured correctly.

Windows hardware figures

Steam’s published Windows requirements, listed for the 2024 PC release, specify a minimum of 8 GB RAM, a 2.8 GHz quad-core processor, 2 GB of dedicated graphics memory, and broadband internet. The recommended figures are 12 GB RAM, a 3.2 GHz quad-core processor, and 4 GB of graphics memory. These are game requirements, not a promise of a particular frame rate or player experience.

Steam warns that running a dedicated server and the game client on the same computer can require roughly twice the memory allocation. That warning applies to the separate server process. Ordinary peer-to-peer hosting does not require launching that additional process, although the host still needs enough headroom for the game, operating system, voice chat, and other applications.

How to host a peer-to-peer game

The labels below describe the standard client flow. Menu wording or placement can change between builds and platforms, but the sequence is the same: create or load a world, make it discoverable, and keep the host in the session.

  1. Update every player first. Have everyone install the same current game update and confirm that no one is launching an older branch, incompatible beta, or different edition.
  2. Start the game client. The player who will host should launch the game on the platform where the world is saved.
  3. Choose New Game or Continue Game. Use New Game for a new world, or Continue Game to load an existing save. Configure the world and gameplay options before starting.
  4. Enable a discoverable multiplayer session. Set the session visibility so friends can find it. A world left in a private or single-player state will not appear as an open peer-to-peer listing.
  5. Start the world and remain in it. The host must finish loading into the game. Leaving the host at a menu or closing the client prevents friends from joining the active world.
  6. Tell friends which account or listing to use. Friends should open the game’s multiplayer or server browser and look under the peer-to-peer tab or equivalent client-hosted category. Where the build supports it, the host’s SteamID can be entered in search instead of relying on a long public listing.
  7. Confirm the players in the session. Once everyone has loaded in, the host should avoid quitting or changing network conditions. The world remains available to the group only for the duration of that host session.

How friends join

Friends do not need a server-rental address for this arrangement. They open the game’s multiplayer/server browser, switch to the peer-to-peer view, and select the host’s listing. If the browser offers SteamID search, searching for the host’s SteamID can be more reliable than scrolling through public results.

If a friend joins successfully but is disconnected when the host exits, that is expected peer-to-peer behavior rather than a failed save. The host must load the world again before the group can play.

Peer-to-peer, LAN, and dedicated hosting are different modes

The client offers more than one way to start multiplayer. LAN co-op is intended for players reachable on the same local network. Peer-to-peer co-op uses the client host for remote players as well; it is not merely another name for LAN. A dedicated server is a separate, headless process that does not require the host’s playable client to remain open.

The table describes the architectural difference, not a guaranteed player limit, price, region, backup policy, or mod policy. Those details depend on the particular dedicated-server setup and should be checked against its current documentation.

Cross-platform and edition considerations

Steam lists Online Co-op, LAN Co-op, and Cross-Platform Multiplayer for 7 Days to Die, with the PC release dated July 25, 2024. That listing does not mean every combination of platform, build, account configuration, or mod setup will connect automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cross-play behavior is build- and configuration-dependent. Before inviting a player on another platform, verify that both platforms are supported by the current build and that all participants are using compatible settings. A platform update, game hotfix, experimental branch, or modified installation can temporarily make two players incompatible even when both own the game.

Some settings often discussed for cross-platform compatibility belong to dedicated-server configuration rather than the normal client-hosted menu. The official dedicated-server support information lists ServerAllowCrossplay=true, EACEnabled=true, IgnoreEOSSanctions=false, and a maximum ServerMaxPlayerCount of 8 in the cross-platform server context. Do not assume that editing these server variables is necessary—or even possible—for a peer-to-peer session. They become relevant when administering a dedicated server.

Why your friend cannot see the session

Work through the checks in this order. Start with version and session state before changing network settings.

  • Confirm the host is actually in a multiplayer world. A save sitting at the title screen, a single-player launch, or a host who has returned to the menu will not provide an active listing.
  • Check the game build on every machine. Compare the displayed version and update status. A small hotfix can be enough to prevent joining.
  • Use the peer-to-peer tab. Searching only a dedicated-server list can hide a client-hosted game. If available in that build, search by the host’s SteamID.
  • Check privacy and firewall permissions. The operating system firewall, platform account privacy, router NAT behavior, or a security suite can block discovery or the connection handshake. Use the platform’s current support instructions for the exact controls.
  • Match anti-cheat and modification state. Temporarily remove incompatible mods or altered files when cross-platform visibility is required, then verify the current official rules for the build before re-enabling them.
  • Restart the client and network session. Have the host close and relaunch the game, then start the world again. Friends should refresh the browser after the host is fully loaded.
  • Test an alternate DNS resolver only as a diagnostic. The official support extract lists Cloudflare DNS at 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1, or Google DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, as alternatives to try. DNS changes are not a guaranteed fix and should be reverted or documented if they do not help.

When the listing appears but joining fails

A visible listing means discovery worked, but it does not prove that the connection can complete. Recheck the host’s firewall and NAT status, then compare versions, anti-cheat state, and installed modifications. If only one friend fails while others join, the problem is more likely on that player’s platform, privacy settings, local network, or installation than in the host’s save.

When everyone disconnects together

A simultaneous disconnect normally points to the host leaving, crashing, or losing connectivity. The client-hosted world has no independent process to keep it running. The host should restart the game, load the save with Continue Game, and have the others join the new session.

How the host’s network affects the group

Because the host’s machine is also the session authority, the host’s upload capacity, latency, and connection stability influence every connected player. A host on a congested Wi-Fi connection may produce lag or disconnections for the entire group even if the other players have fast internet.

For scheduled co-op, use the most stable connection available, close unnecessary bandwidth-heavy applications, and avoid changing networks while the world is active. These steps cannot overcome an incompatible build or blocked firewall, but they reduce failures caused by the host’s local conditions.

When a dedicated server becomes worthwhile

Move to a dedicated server when the group’s requirement changes from “we play when the host is available” to “the world should be available independently.” Typical signs include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Players need to enter the world while the original host is asleep, traveling, or offline.
  • The group plays on rotating schedules and cannot agree on one permanent host.
  • The host’s computer struggles to render the game while also serving the session.
  • You need administrator-controlled updates, scheduled maintenance, or a separately managed machine.
  • A cross-platform setup requires server-side options that are not exposed by the client-hosted flow.

A dedicated server adds work: installation, configuration, updates, access control, backups, and possible hosting or hardware costs. Provider-specific player slots, locations, uptime, backup systems, anti-cheat behavior, and mod policies are not universal, so confirm them before committing. The important trade-off is straightforward: you pay in setup or hosting complexity to gain an independently running world.

Choosing the right approach for common groups

Group situation Recommended approach Reason
Two to a few friends who play together at the same time Peer-to-peer client hosting No server rental is needed, and setup is limited to starting a world and joining the listing.
Friends who play at different hours Dedicated server The world can stay online when the usual host is not playing.
Players on different platforms First test the current supported cross-play combination with matching builds and settings Cross-platform behavior varies by build and configuration; ownership alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Host has an unstable connection Use a more stable host or consider a dedicated server Every player depends on the host’s connection in a peer-to-peer session.
Group wants minimal administration Peer-to-peer There is no separate server process to install, patch, or monitor.

Key limitations to explain to your friends

Set expectations before the first session:

  • The host’s game client is the active server for that session.
  • Friends can join remotely; peer-to-peer is not limited to LAN.
  • The host must remain in the game for everyone else to remain connected.
  • Quitting ends the live session, but the host can load the saved world again later.
  • Cross-play depends on the current platform, build, anti-cheat, and modification combination.
  • A dedicated server is optional for ordinary co-op but required for an independently available world.

Bottom line

For a normal, scheduled co-op game, start a world with New Game or Continue Game, make it visible, and have friends join from the peer-to-peer browser or by SteamID where supported. You do not need to rent a dedicated server. The decisive limitation is that the host’s client controls the session: when that host stops playing, the world is unavailable until the host starts it again. Choose a dedicated server only when persistent access, separate resources, or server-side administration justifies the additional setup and cost.
