Some 1990s CD-ROM games can run on Linux with Wine, but there is no single method that works for every title. First check whether the game was made for Windows or DOS, and whether it is supported by ScummVM. Then choose the matching route and make sure the game can access its disc data and, if needed, CD audio.
Choose the right route for the game
| What the game needs | Route to try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A Windows executable | Wine, optionally managed through Lutris | Wine runs Windows programs; Lutris can manage games and use a game-optimized Wine version while playing. |
| A DOS executable | DOSBox | DOSBox emulates a DOS environment and can expose a CD-ROM through the interface many DOS games expect. |
| A title supported by ScummVM | ScummVM | ScummVM replaces the original executable and runs supported games using their data files. |
These routes are not interchangeable. ScummVM is not a general Windows compatibility layer, and DOSBox is intended for DOS games rather than Windows executables. For Windows games, Lutris recommends installing a recent Wine version; its guidance says Lutris uses a custom game-optimized Wine version while playing. The external Wine setup is not needed for Lutris’s Flatpak build. See Lutris’s download guidance.
Before installing anything, look up the exact title in Lutris’s installer documentation or ScummVM’s compatibility information. A listed installer or supported title can provide game-specific requirements, but it is not a guarantee that the game will work on every Linux distribution or system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a Windows game, start with Wine or Lutris
If the CD contains a Windows installer or game executable, try Wine. Lutris provides a way to manage games and Wine versions, but the right setup can vary by title. Follow any instructions attached to the exact game rather than assuming a generic installation will handle its installer, disc check, or copy protection.

If the computer has no optical drive, an external USB CD/DVD drive can make a physical disc readable. That addresses disc access only; it does not solve compatibility, copy-protection, or game-specific setup problems.
For a DOS game, install and mount the CD in DOSBox
DOSBox’s manual says, “You should always install your game inside DOSBox.” Install from within the emulated DOS environment rather than installing the game through a different system and expecting the result to work there.
DOSBox needs the Linux system’s disc or image mounted as an emulated CD-ROM so a DOS game can use the expected CD interface. Its manual gives this example:

mount d /media/cdrom -t cdrom
Replace /media/cdrom with the actual mount point on your Linux system. Mount points and disc labels vary. If a game does not recognize the disc, check that the mount points to the correct drive and try the volume label expected by the game. DOSBox documents CD-ROM mounting in its manual and MOUNT reference.
When installing from a CD, mount both a folder for the emulated hard drive and the CD-ROM. The DOSBox manual describes this setup and its CD-ROM mode, which provides the MSCDEX interface DOS games may require.
Preserve CD audio when the game needs it
Disc images do not all preserve the same content. DOSBox’s documentation distinguishes data-only ISO images from mixed-mode discs: an ISO contains data, while a CUE/BIN pair can preserve audio tracks. If the game uses CD audio, prefer a properly prepared CUE/BIN image rather than assuming an ISO will include the music. See the DOSBox manual.

ScummVM can usually play CD audio directly from the game CD. Its documentation also describes extracting tracks, converting them to MP3, FLAC, M4A, or OGG, and placing them beside the game data. The exact file layout can depend on the title; consult ScummVM’s game-file instructions.

Handle multi-disc games according to the runtime
DOSBox
DOSBox can mount multiple disc images and switch between them during play with Ctrl+F4. The images must be mounted in a way the game can use, and a game’s own disc checks may still require the correct physical disc or a properly prepared image. Consult the DOSBox manual for its image-mounting guidance.
ScummVM
ScummVM requires the needed game files together on disk and cannot run a multi-CD game directly from the CDs. Copy the required files into a hard-drive folder, following that title’s file instructions. The ScummVM game-file guide explains the requirements.

What to check when a game will not launch
- Confirm the original platform. A Windows game needs a Windows compatibility route such as Wine; a DOS game belongs in DOSBox; ScummVM applies only to titles it supports.
- Check title-specific setup. Look for a Lutris installer or ScummVM compatibility and file instructions for the exact game.
- Verify CD access. For DOSBox, make sure the correct Linux mount point is exposed in CD-ROM mode and that any required volume label is correct.
- Check the image format if audio is missing. A data-only ISO may not contain mixed-mode CD audio; CUE/BIN can preserve those tracks.
- For a multi-disc ScummVM game, put the required files on disk. ScummVM does not run these games directly from the CDs.
The documentation establishes these setup options, not a universal success rate. A successful launch for one title does not show that another 1990s game will run, and no particular game’s compatibility can be inferred without its exact requirements.
Sources and scope
This guide draws on project documentation: Lutris download guidance, Lutris installer documentation, the DOSBox v0.74-3 manual, the DOSBox MOUNT reference, and ScummVM’s documentation for version 2.9.0 and game files in version 2.9.1. The guidance describes documented capabilities and setup; it does not establish that an unspecified game works on a particular Linux system.
