Plan from the exact switch model’s maximum documented electrical input and heat output, then design rack power, redundancy, airflow, liquid distribution and facility heat rejection around those values. Typical consumption is useful for operating budgets, but maximum load determines infrastructure. A published cooling capacity or rack-density figure is never a universal target: it applies only to the product, configuration and conditions stated by its manufacturer.
1. Freeze the switch configuration before sizing anything
“High-density AI switch” is not a sufficient engineering specification. Two switches with similar port counts can have different ASICs, optics, power supplies, airflow directions and cooling interfaces. Create a configuration record for every proposed model before requesting electrical or mechanical capacity.
Record the variables that change power and heat
- Exact model and hardware revision.
- Port speed and the number of populated ports.
- Optic, DAC or AOC type and quantity.
- Number of installed line cards or other modules.
- Power-supply count, rating and intended operating mode.
- Ambient temperature and elevation limits for the installation.
- Airflow direction, liquid connections and any required cooling distribution unit (CDU).
- Whether the switch will run at full line rate, a partial port population or a reduced-power mode.
Keep this record under change control. Replacing a DAC with an optical transceiver, adding ports or changing the power-supply arrangement can invalidate an earlier thermal or electrical calculation.
Separate maximum provisioning from typical operation
Use the manufacturer’s maximum input draw and maximum heat-dissipation figure when sizing feeders, PDUs, busways, breakers, cooling equipment and emergency power. Record typical draw separately for energy forecasts and operating cost estimates. Cisco’s N9164E-NS4-O documentation illustrates why the distinction matters: it lists 1,455 W typical consumption for a stated configuration at 50% capacity and 25°C, and 2,209 W maximum for a stated configuration at 100% capacity and 40°C. Cisco notes that the values can change with optics and line-rate configuration. Those figures describe that model and those test conditions; they are not a generic per-switch allowance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ask the vendor for both input power and heat output. They are often close in a steady-state electrical device, but the installation manual may account for conversion losses, fan power or liquid-heat removal in a particular way. Use the definitions in that manual consistently.
2. Convert the load envelope into an electrical design
Verify voltage, frequency, current and connectors
Read the installation manual for supported voltage ranges, frequency, maximum current per input, plug or terminal type and permitted branch-circuit protection. For example, the NVIDIA CS8500 system manual specifies 200–240 VAC at 50/60 Hz, a maximum 16 A per AC source and PDU connections using C19 sockets. A rack PDU with C19 outlets is therefore a physical interface to check for that system, not a universal recommendation for every AI switch.
Confirm whether the current figure is per power supply, per AC source or for the complete chassis. Check whether the stated current is a continuous operating value, an inrush value or a circuit-sizing maximum. Your electrical engineer must then apply the applicable local code, derating, breaker and conductor rules.

Document the intended resilience model before ordering PDUs. Common patterns include redundant switch power supplies fed from independent A and B sources, a dual-grid arrangement, or a single source with spare capacity. The correct choice depends on the switch’s supported behavior and the facility’s reliability target.
For the CS8500, the documented N+N arrangement uses two power grids and requires 220 V. Do not infer that requirement for another model. Verify that each supply can carry the required load after the other source is lost, and obtain the vendor’s statement about operation during a PSU, feed or grid failure.
Size upstream equipment from the worst credible state
- Sum the maximum input values for all switches, CDUs, pumps, heat exchangers and rack auxiliaries on the branch.
- Identify which of those loads are on each independent feed.
- Check the one-feed-failed case if the design promises A/B or N+N resilience.
- Add only the engineering margin required by your electrical standard and site engineer; do not substitute an arbitrary percentage for a documented calculation.
- Verify that UPS, generator, transfer equipment and distribution panels support the same voltage, frequency, phase and transient requirements.
Keep rack-level metering on both feeds. A total-rack reading can hide an overloaded source when the other source is lightly used.

3. Select air, hybrid or liquid cooling from the actual heat path
| Approach | Heat path | What must be validated | Typical design risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air cooled | Fans move heat from the chassis into the hot aisle; room or row cooling rejects it. | Maximum fan power, airflow in the required direction, inlet temperature, rack pressure and room heat-rejection capacity. | Recirculation or insufficient room cooling can raise inlet temperature even when electrical capacity is adequate. |
| Hybrid liquid and air | Liquid captures most heat from designated components while air cools the remaining components and exhausts residual heat. | Liquid flow, coolant compatibility, CDU capacity, air inlet temperature, fan airflow and service clearances. | Designers may size only the liquid loop and overlook power supplies, management modules or other air-cooled parts. |
| Direct liquid cooled | A liquid loop removes heat at cold plates or another direct-to-chip interface. | CDU, primary and secondary loops, water quality, pressure, flow, leak detection, isolation and maintenance procedures. | Facility water or controls may not meet the equipment loop’s requirements; a leak or pump failure can affect the rack quickly. |
Use a model-specific thermal diagram rather than a label such as “liquid-ready.” It should show which components are liquid cooled, which remain air cooled, the direction of air movement and the location of sensors and isolation points.

The CS8500 hybrid example
The NVIDIA CS8500 manual states that liquid removes 90% of the system’s heat and air removes 10%. The split applies to that documented hybrid design, not to all high-density switches. Its management modules and power supplies are air cooled, so the rack still needs a correctly conditioned cold aisle and an unobstructed hot-aisle path.
Separate available products from roadmaps
Cisco’s direct-to-chip switch page describes next-generation liquid-cooled switches as in development and explicitly says they are not yet commercially available on that page. Treat projected benefits as a technology roadmap, not as an installation option or a guaranteed efficiency result. The page mentions a future-deployment goal of up to 30% to 50% energy savings; that is a stated goal, not an independently verified saving for a shipping switch.
4. Map airflow to the rack and aisle layout
Follow the documented inlet-to-outlet direction
The CS8500 documentation specifies airflow from the spine side, positioned toward the cold aisle, to the leaf side, positioned toward the hot aisle. A rack plan that reverses that orientation can feed heated exhaust back into the switch even if the room has enough total cooling capacity. Mark the inlet and outlet sides on rack elevations and floor plans, and verify the direction after installation.
Preserve panels, blanks and service clearances
The same manual calls for retaining the upper air panel and installing blanks in unused module slots. These parts maintain the intended pressure and prevent bypass airflow. Include them in the bill of materials and in the commissioning checklist. Do not remove panels to make space for cables or hoses without written vendor approval.
Route power, data and liquid lines so that they do not block fans, cold-plate connections, filters, quick disconnects or service doors. Leave enough room to remove a power supply, management module or line card without disconnecting an adjacent live circuit.

5. Treat the CDU as the boundary between facility and equipment loops
Keep primary and secondary water separated
A CDU transfers heat between a facility loop and an equipment loop while keeping their fluids separate. NVIDIA’s CS8500 cooling manual states: "The water in the primary and secondary loops are not mixed within the CDU." The separation protects the switch-side loop from unsuitable facility water and allows the equipment manufacturer to specify its own coolant chemistry and materials.
Validate the secondary loop in detail
- Water or coolant quality limits, including filtration and treatment.
- Allowed materials, seals and hose types to prevent galvanic or chemical corrosion.
- Maximum and minimum pressure at the switch inlet and return.
- Required flow rate and the control range of pumps or valves.
- Supply and return temperature limits at the rack.
- Leak detection, automatic isolation and alarm contacts.
- Sampling, flushing, filling and maintenance procedures.
Request the exact coolant specification and compatibility list from the switch vendor and CDU supplier. “Facility water available” does not prove that the facility loop can be connected directly to the switch.
Plan access and monitoring
Provide isolation valves, drain or fill points where the vendor requires them, and enough clearance to service pumps, filters and heat exchangers. Bring flow, temperature, pressure, leak and pump-state signals into the building-management or data-center-infrastructure-management system. Alarm thresholds should be set from the equipment manual, not from a generic chiller default.

6. Match heat rejection to the facility
The CS8500 manual describes two arrangements: a water-to-water CDU when facility water is available, and a water-to-air heat exchanger when it is not. Select between them only after checking the site’s water temperature, flow, pressure, treatment, seasonal operation and maintenance capability.
Water-to-water path
In this arrangement, the facility loop carries heat away from the CDU. Confirm that the central plant can provide the required flow at the hottest design condition and that the return temperature remains within the plant’s operating envelope. Check whether the plant is redundant enough for the switch service level and whether a maintenance isolation leaves adequate cooling.
Water-to-air path
A water-to-air heat exchanger rejects the secondary-loop heat into the surrounding air. The room or row must then have sufficient sensible-cooling capacity and an airflow path that does not raise the rack inlet temperature. Account for fan power, acoustic limits, filter maintenance and the heat exchanger’s own footprint.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not substitute vendor capacity labels for engineering
Vendor pages illustrate the range of available infrastructure but do not set a target for your rack. Dell describes a rack-mount CDU with up to 160 kW of cooling capacity. Schneider Electric cites up to 227 kW per rack for a reference design co-developed for an NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 system. Supermicro describes in-rack CDUs up to 250 kW and 33 kW power shelves. Each number belongs to a particular product, configuration and operating envelope; none establishes the safe capacity of an arbitrary switch rack.
7. Account for rack space, weight and service access
Cooling hardware consumes rack units and can change the rack’s center of gravity. The NVIDIA CS8500 documentation describes a 29U chassis with a separate 4U in-rack CDU, redundant hot-swappable power supplies, and documented configurations of 800 HDR ports or 1,600 HDR100 ports. Those are model-specific dimensions and capacities. Include the chassis, CDU, PDUs, cable bend radius, hose loops, blanking panels and service clearance in the rack elevation before approving the layout.
Check floor loading and seismic requirements for the fully populated rack, not an empty chassis. Confirm that doors, lift equipment and aisle widths can accommodate the assembled rack and that a failed CDU or power supply can be removed without taking unrelated equipment offline.
8. Use a repeatable capacity calculation
Build a calculation sheet with one row per device and a separate row for each supporting load. At minimum, include:
| Calculation item | Required input | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Switch electrical load | Manufacturer maximum input by configuration | Sets branch, PDU, UPS and generator provisioning. |
| Switch heat load | Manufacturer maximum heat output or the defined equivalent | Sets room, row, CDU and heat-exchanger capacity. |
| Typical operating load | Vendor typical value with its temperature, port and optics assumptions | Supports energy and operating-cost forecasts without reducing the design maximum. |
| Auxiliary loads | CDU pumps, controls, fans, heat exchangers, monitoring and lighting | Prevents non-switch loads from disappearing in rack totals. |
| Resilience case | Load after one feed, PSU, pump or cooling path fails | Tests whether the promised redundancy actually carries the rack. |
For a row of identical switches, calculate the maximum electrical load as the sum of each switch’s documented maximum plus the maximum of the supporting equipment. Apply the same method to heat. If the vendor reports power and heat under different configurations, do not combine them casually; obtain a consistent worst-case pair or document the assumptions in the engineering record.

9. Commission the installation in stages
- Document inspection: Confirm model, revision, populated modules, optics, power supplies, CDU and heat-exchanger parts against the approved configuration.
- Electrical verification: Measure voltage, frequency, phase and polarity at every feed before connecting equipment. Confirm C19 outlets or other connectors match the manual.
- Feed labeling: Label A and B sources at the breaker, PDU, cable and switch inlet. Trace each cable physically rather than relying on a drawing.
- Liquid-loop inspection: Verify coolant, materials, pressure, flow, valves, drains, filters and leak sensors against the vendor’s limits.
- Airflow check: Confirm cold-aisle and hot-aisle orientation, upper panels, module blanks, fan direction and unobstructed exhaust.
- Telemetry test: Validate power, inlet temperature, outlet temperature, flow, pressure, leak and fan or pump alarms in the monitoring system.
- Redundancy test: With the vendor-approved procedure, remove one feed or PSU and confirm that the remaining path carries the load without an unsafe temperature rise.
- Cooling-failure test: Test pump, CDU, heat-exchanger and leak alarms with facilities personnel, confirming automatic responses and escalation.
- Load test: Exercise the approved traffic and port configuration while recording inlet temperature, power, flow and alarm history at steady state.
- Handover: Store as-built drawings, set points, serial numbers, coolant records, spare parts and recovery procedures with the operations team.
10. Troubleshoot by symptom and failure domain
One feed trips or a PSU reports a fault
Check whether the surviving feed is on the intended independent source, whether its PDU and breaker have capacity for the failover load, and whether the switch’s documented redundancy mode is enabled. Do not repeatedly pull live power cords as a test; use the vendor’s approved procedure and record the resulting current and temperature.

Inlet temperature rises while room cooling appears normal
Check for reversed rack orientation, missing blanks, an absent upper air panel, blocked filters, cable obstructions or hot-aisle recirculation. Compare the switch’s local inlet sensor with aisle sensors; a comfortable room average can hide a hot rack inlet.
Liquid temperature or flow alarm appears
Check pump state, valve position, filter differential pressure, supply and return temperatures, pressure and leak sensors. Isolate the affected loop only according to the equipment procedure. Do not add untreated facility water or an unapproved coolant to restore flow.
Power readings disagree with the design sheet
Verify the measurement point and whether the meter reports watts, volt-amperes or current per feed. Recheck optics, port population, ambient temperature and software power limits. Update the configuration record before changing breakers or cooling set points.

Before procurement, obtain a signed review from the switch vendor and the site’s electrical, mechanical and operations engineers. The review package should include:
- Current installation and cooling manuals for the exact switch revision.
- Maximum and typical power and heat tables with configuration conditions.
- Rack elevation showing chassis, CDU, PDUs, hose routing and service clearances.
- Single-line electrical diagram with A/B or N+N feeds and the failed-feed case.
- Primary and secondary loop schematic, coolant specification and water-quality limits.
- Airflow drawing showing cold aisle, hot aisle, inlet and exhaust sides.
- Alarm matrix, telemetry points and emergency shutdown or isolation behavior.
- Commissioning plan and acceptance limits for voltage, current, temperature, flow and pressure.
If any value is missing, mark it as an open engineering item and obtain it from the manufacturer. Do not fill the gap with a generic rack-density number.
12. A practical decision framework
Choose the simplest architecture that meets the documented maximum heat and power of the selected switch while preserving the required failure behavior.
- Use air cooling only when the switch’s maximum heat, airflow and inlet-temperature limits fit the room or row system with verified airflow containment.
- Use hybrid cooling when the switch removes most heat through liquid but still has air-cooled power supplies, management hardware or residual heat. Size both paths.
- Use direct liquid cooling when a commercially available switch and validated CDU interface require it and the facility can meet the loop, water-quality, monitoring and service requirements.
- Increase electrical and thermal capacity together when adding ports, optics, line cards or higher-rate operation changes both maximum input and heat output.
- Delay procurement when the vendor has provided only a roadmap, a typical value without a maximum, or a capacity figure without the conditions needed to reproduce it.
The defensible design is the one that ties every breaker, PDU, feed, fan, pump, heat exchanger and alarm to a documented switch configuration and a stated failure case. Facility engineering review is required before installation because no generic guide can account for your site’s voltage, water conditions, climate, rack count or resilience requirements.
