A workable Nigerian business-internet continuity plan combines a genuinely independent second access path, automatic dual-WAN failover, backup power for every network device, and routine outage drills. Start with the applications and downtime you can tolerate, then verify address-level coverage, route diversity, data terms, support obligations and power requirements before signing a second contract.

Start with the business impact, not a product

Backup internet is insurance against lost transactions, inaccessible cloud systems and disconnected staff. The right design for a small shop is not the right design for a call centre, clinic or multi-branch company. Write down what must continue when the primary connection fails and how long an interruption is acceptable.

List the traffic that must survive

  • Card, point-of-sale and payment-authorisation traffic.
  • Cloud accounting, inventory, payroll and customer-support systems.
  • Voice and video calls, messaging and dispatch applications.
  • Staff VPN access to headquarters, file servers or hosted applications.
  • Inbound services such as a public website, remote cameras or a mail gateway.

Record a minimum acceptable backup performance for each critical workflow. A branch that needs messaging and payment authorisation may function with a much smaller backup link than a call centre carrying many simultaneous voice sessions or a clinic sending large files. Define a maximum tolerable interruption (for example, a few minutes rather than an hour) and decide which non-critical traffic will be blocked or rate-limited during failover.

Map the primary connection’s failure domains

Two subscriptions are not automatically two independent paths. They can enter the same building through one duct, use the same fibre route, terminate on the same tower, depend on the same upstream network or fail when the same local power circuit goes down. A backup is most valuable when it avoids the primary link’s failure mode.

Document the primary path

  • Access technology (fibre, fixed wireless, microwave, mobile or satellite).
  • Where the cable or radio path enters the premises and where the provider’s equipment is located.
  • Known upstream carrier, exchange, tower or data-centre dependencies.
  • Every device that needs power: ONT or modem, router, switches, Wi-Fi access points, radios and security appliances.
  • Support telephone numbers, account identifiers, escalation contacts and the provider’s restoration process.

Ask prospective providers about independence

Request the last-mile route, upstream dependencies, local power arrangements and restoration procedure in writing. Provider or brand diversity alone does not prove route diversity. If both services use the same building entry or tower, a construction cut or local equipment failure can remove both at once. A wired primary paired with a cellular or satellite path usually attacks a different physical failure mode, but only a site-specific discussion can establish that.

Compare the access technologies available at your address

Nigerian businesses can evaluate wired or dedicated access, fixed wireless or microwave, mobile broadband and satellite/VSAT. Availability and real-world performance depend on the precise premises, not the provider’s national footprint.

Option Useful when Verify before purchase
Fibre or dedicated wired access The address is covered and predictable performance, upload capacity or contractual support justify a second wired path. Separate building entry and upstream route, SLA and restoration terms, upload speed, static-IP availability, installation lead time and shared upstream infrastructure.
Fixed wireless or microwave Fibre is absent or a radio path can be installed quickly. Site survey and line of sight, antenna location, antenna and indoor equipment power, local capacity, weather assumptions and route independence.
Mobile broadband A cellular signal is usable and short- or moderate-duration backup capacity is sufficient. Signal inside the premises, supported bands, congestion at busy times, data allowance or fair-use policy, SIM registration, router compatibility and whether the tower shares a dependency with the primary.
Satellite/VSAT The site is remote, temporary or poorly served by terrestrial networks. Service footprint, plan capacity, latency, terminal and power requirements, installation, weather assumptions and total recurring and equipment costs.

Fibre and dedicated access

Dedicated access can provide the upload performance, static addressing and support process required by VPNs or hosted services, but only where the address is served and the route is genuinely separate. Smile describes dedicated internet delivered by point-to-point microwave radio or optical fibre, with listed availability in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Onitsha, Asaba, Benin and Kaduna; confirm current coverage and terms at your premises on its Data Solutions page. Dotmac describes shared and dedicated business access, static-IP options, service-level support, monitoring and enterprise escalation; request its address-level coverage check and any required survey through its business internet page.

Do not treat a provider’s marketing uptime as independently measured performance. Access and Content Ltd’s website states a “99.9% SLA reliable” claim; ask to see the contractual uptime definition, exclusions, measurement method, response target, restoration target and service-credit formula at acl.ng.

Fixed wireless and microwave

A radio link may be practical where a fibre build is unavailable, but it normally requires a line-of-sight survey and an antenna with a clear mounting position. Confirm whether the radio uses the same tower, backhaul or local power arrangement as the primary. Include the outdoor radio, indoor power injector and any network switch in the power-backup calculation; a router on a UPS cannot keep an unpowered antenna online.

Mobile broadband

Mobile data can be an effective backup when the carrier’s signal and capacity are adequate at the office, shop or branch. Test reception where the router will actually sit, not only outside the building. Check performance at opening time, peak trading periods and during rain or other conditions that affect the site. Compare data allowances, throttling or fair-use rules and the cost of sustained failover. A national subscriber figure does not establish service at your premises: the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reported 158,066,217 active GSM internet subscribers in August 2026 in its Industry Statistics, but that is national context rather than a coverage or throughput guarantee.

Satellite and VSAT

Satellite is worth checking for remote, temporary or terrestrial-limited sites. NIGCOMSAT presents broadband for business continuity, remote or hard-to-reach locations and temporary sites within its satellite footprint; validate the specific service area, plan, terminal, installation and power requirements on its Broadband page. Expect higher latency than many terrestrial links, which can affect interactive VPNs, voice, video and some payment workflows. Test the actual applications and confirm capacity and weather assumptions before relying on it as the sole fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decide how much backup capacity you need

Measure normal and peak traffic for the applications that must remain available, then reserve headroom for protocol overhead and short bursts. Separate upload from download: cloud backups, video calls, camera feeds and file transfers can make upload the limiting factor. If the backup is intentionally smaller, create a failover policy that preserves payments, DNS, messaging and business-critical cloud tools while pausing operating-system updates, guest Wi-Fi, streaming and large synchronisation jobs.

For a branch, document the number of simultaneous payment terminals, staff sessions and voice calls the backup must support. For a clinic or school, include any records, telemedicine or examination traffic that cannot be delayed. Capacity should be a stated requirement in the provider quote, not an assumption based on a headline speed.

Install automatic failover with a dual-WAN design

A dual-WAN router can connect the primary and secondary links, run health checks and move selected traffic when the primary fails. Match the router’s interfaces to the actual services: for example, Ethernet WAN for a fibre ONT plus a second Ethernet WAN, or an integrated cellular modem and SIM. Verify supported cellular bands, carrier compatibility, throughput under failover and whether the router can use policy-based routing.

  1. Connect both services. Put the primary ONT/modem on WAN1 and the independent link (second Ethernet handoff, cellular modem or satellite terminal) on WAN2. Label cables and record provider account details.
  2. Configure health checks. Use more than a physical-link check where the router allows it. Test reachability to reliable external destinations and require repeated failures before declaring an outage, so a transient packet loss does not cause needless switching.
  3. Set traffic policy. Keep payment, DNS, VPN and essential cloud traffic eligible for WAN2. Decide whether guest Wi-Fi, backups and other bulk traffic should be blocked or shaped while on the smaller link.
  4. Choose failback behaviour. Automatic return to WAN1 can cause flapping if the primary is unstable. Use a recovery delay or manual approval where the router supports it, and document who may force a link change.
  5. Check public-address effects. A failover path normally has a different public IP. Confirm the impact on VPN peers, firewall allowlists, remote-access portals, payment services, geofencing, DNS records and any inbound service. If an application requires a fixed source address, obtain a static IP on the backup or redesign that dependency.
  6. Back up the configuration. Store an encrypted copy of the router configuration, WAN credentials, SIM details, support contacts and the procedure for temporary manual tethering.

Failover keeps outbound sessions available; it does not magically preserve every existing connection. Some VPNs, voice calls and TCP sessions will reconnect when the public IP changes. Test the real software and terminals used by the business rather than trusting a dashboard showing “WAN2 online.”

Keep the network powered during Nigerian outages

Internet equipment needs electricity even when the provider’s network is still operating. Size a UPS or other backup supply for the modem or ONT, dual-WAN router, switches, Wi-Fi access points, firewall, radio or satellite terminal and any local power injector required by the backup path. A UPS that powers only the router will not keep a fibre ONT, outdoor radio or satellite terminal online.

  • Record each device’s input voltage, wattage or amp rating and startup draw.
  • Calculate the runtime needed to bridge generator startup or the target outage window; account for battery ageing and conversion losses.
  • Separate network loads from non-essential office equipment so printers, monitors and kettles cannot exhaust the communications battery.
  • Test the UPS under the actual connected load and verify that the router and modem do not reboot when utility power is removed.
  • Plan generator, inverter or solar support if the expected outage exceeds UPS runtime, and protect equipment from unstable power.

The provider’s own tower, exchange or satellite gateway may also lose power. Customer-side backup reduces one failure domain but cannot guarantee service during a wider outage.

Verify providers and contracts at the premises

Request an address-level coverage result and a site survey where line of sight, building entry or fibre availability is uncertain. Compare the following in the written quote and contract:

  • Last-mile technology, building entry and upstream route, including what is shared with the primary.
  • Download and upload commitments, latency expectations, data caps, throttling and fair-use conditions.
  • Static IP availability, IPv4/IPv6 support and any restrictions affecting VPNs or allowlists.
  • Installation lead time, equipment ownership, maintenance access, relocation and exit terms.
  • Support hours, escalation contacts, response and restoration targets, uptime measurement and service credits.
  • Recurring fees, installation charges, equipment or replacement costs and the cost of keeping the link idle until needed.

NCC publishes operator and industry statistics, but those figures do not promise service at a particular office. Its Q2 2026 ISP table includes operator-submitted subscriber categories and points of presence; it is not a premises-level coverage map. NCC reports 319,735 FTTX subscribers in Q2 2026 and explains that the count includes fibre subscriptions from ISPs and fixed/PNL operators. Use the ISP data table and industry statistics for market context, then obtain a written address check.

NCC’s outage rules add a consumer-information obligation but do not replace a business SLA. In a May 25, 2025 press release, the commission said: “Consumers must also be informed one week in advance where operators have planned service outages.” It also says operators must communicate the cause, affected areas and expected restoration time for major outages, with proportional compensation—including validity extensions where applicable—when a qualifying outage continues for more than 24 hours under the Consumer Code of Practice Regulations. Read the full NCC directive release and still negotiate the response and restoration terms your business needs.

Test the plan before a real outage

A continuity plan is unproven until staff have used it with production-like workflows. Schedule a controlled test outside the busiest trading period, notify the provider if the contract requires it and record results.

  1. Confirm both WANs are healthy, the UPS is charged and the test owner has provider and escalation contacts.
  2. Disconnect or administratively disable the primary WAN at the router; do not merely unplug a workstation.
  3. Measure the time until the router selects WAN2 and note any packet loss or session resets.
  4. Run a payment authorisation, cloud accounting transaction, customer-support login, voice or video call, VPN connection and any critical hosted service.
  5. Check public-IP-dependent services, DNS resolution, inbound access and monitoring alerts.
  6. Measure backup latency, upload and download during representative load. Record data consumption if the backup is cellular or capped.
  7. Restore WAN1 and verify the chosen failback delay, session recovery and monitoring state.
  8. Document failures, assign owners and repeat after provider, router, firmware, SIM, power or network changes.

Keep a laminated or offline procedure for manual tethering or hotspot use if both automated paths fail. Store account credentials and configuration backups where the person on duty can access them without the primary internet connection.

Common design mistakes and their fixes

Two links that share one route

Symptom: both services fail during a building cut or tower outage. Fix: ask for physical and upstream diversity, then test by taking the primary route out of service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Failover configured but business applications break

Symptom: the router reports WAN2 active while VPNs, payment terminals or allowlisted cloud tools fail. Fix: test public-IP requirements, static addressing, DNS, MTU and application reconnection with the actual equipment.

Backup power is undersized

Symptom: the router stays on but the ONT, radio or satellite terminal reboots. Fix: put every required customer-premises device on an appropriately sized supply and test runtime under load.

Mobile backup runs out of data

Symptom: a long outage exhausts the allowance or triggers throttling. Fix: set alerts, shape non-critical traffic, maintain a second SIM or carrier where feasible and price sustained use rather than a short demonstration.

Automatic switching oscillates

Symptom: unstable primary service causes repeated WAN changes and dropped sessions. Fix: tune health-check thresholds and recovery delays, or require manual failback until the primary is stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework

  • Small shop or branch: retain a wired or fixed-wireless primary, add tested mobile broadband, use a dual-WAN router and protect the ONT, router and access point with a UPS. Prioritise payment and messaging over guest traffic.
  • Office with VPN and cloud workloads: seek route-diverse fibre, dedicated access or microwave, confirm static-IP and allowlist requirements, and test VPN reconnection and upload performance.
  • Remote or temporary site: compare mobile and satellite/VSAT after a site survey. Include terminal power, latency-sensitive applications, installation timing and weather assumptions in the decision.
  • High-consequence operation: use physically and operationally diverse links, documented escalation, monitored power and scheduled outage drills. Treat provider claims as proposals until the contract and test establish what is delivered.

What to retain in the continuity runbook

Keep one current document containing the WAN diagrams, provider names and account numbers, coverage and route notes, IP and VPN dependencies, router configuration backup, UPS runtime, escalation contacts, test dates, measured switch time, application results and the manual fallback procedure. Assign an owner and review it after every network or power change. Recheck provider plans and NCC figures periodically because coverage, capacity, tariffs and statistics change.

Bottom line

The best backup internet in Nigeria is not a nationally advertised technology; it is the independent path that works at your exact address, carries your critical workloads, survives the same power and route failures as little as possible, and switches cleanly when tested. Combine address-level provider verification, dual-WAN policy, complete equipment power protection and repeatable drills before declaring the business resilient.
