Decide what the image must communicate, then describe the subject, scene, composition, visual treatment, lighting, and constraints in that order. This turns a vague idea into a short visual brief that an image model can interpret. You do not need a giant block of adjectives: OpenAI Academy says, “A good image prompt does not need to be long. In most cases, 1–3 clear sentences are enough.” The useful work happens before generation, when you choose the decisions that affect layout and meaning.

This guide gives you a repeatable planning method, examples for common deliverables, a prompt structure, and a refinement process for when the first result is close but not right. The recommendations reflect provider guidance from OpenAI and Google reviewed October 13, 2026; they are not a guarantee of pixel-perfect placement or a measured performance improvement.

What should you decide before generating an AI image?

Start with the image’s job, not its appearance. A banner, product listing, editorial illustration, social post, diagram, and presentation slide each impose different requirements. A banner may need an uncluttered region for a headline. A product image may need the object to read instantly against a simple background. An instructional diagram may prioritize labels and spatial relationships over atmosphere.

Write the purpose and deliverable in one line. For example: “A wide website hero image that introduces a cloud-security article, with open space on the left for a headline.” That sentence gives the generator a use, a format, and a layout priority before you describe colors or mood.

Purpose changes composition

  • Website hero or banner: choose a wide aspect ratio and reserve a clean area for copy or navigation.
  • Product listing: keep the item prominent, legible, and separated from distracting scenery.
  • Editorial illustration: use the scene and visual metaphor to support the article’s idea.
  • Social post: plan for the platform’s crop and make the subject recognizable at a small size.
  • Diagram or explainer: favor an organized viewpoint, clear grouping, and room for labels.

These are practical applications of the prompt dimensions recommended in OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance. They are planning choices, not universal rules.

How do you define the subject, action, and setting?

Name the central subject, what it is doing, and where the action occurs. This prevents a prompt from relying on mood words such as “beautiful,” “epic,” or “cinematic” to carry information they do not specify.

Subject

Identify the person, object, animal, architecture, or group that should receive the viewer’s attention. Add distinguishing traits only when they matter: “a red commuter bicycle with a front basket” is more useful than “a cool bike.” For a person, relevant details might include age range, clothing, posture, or role. Avoid adding a long inventory of incidental features that compete with the main idea.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Action

Use a concrete verb: “a technician calibrates a sensor,” “a child releases a paper lantern,” or “a ceramic vase sits beside an open book.” The action establishes body position, object relationships, and visual tension. If nothing is happening, describe the state precisely: “a glass bottle stands upright on a wet stone ledge.”

Setting

Choose the location and include details that help communicate the purpose. “A quiet laboratory with stainless-steel benches” supports a technology explainer; “a misty forest” may be appropriate for a fantasy scene but is not enough by itself to explain the subject. Keep the setting proportional to its role. If the background only needs to provide contrast, say so rather than specifying dozens of props.

How do you plan composition and framing?

Composition tells the model how the viewer should encounter the subject. Make the framing, viewpoint, placement, aspect ratio, and empty space explicit. OpenAI’s API guidance recommends naming these elements and treating placement constraints as instructions. They guide the generation but do not guarantee exact coordinates.

Choose the framing

  • Close-up: emphasizes a face, texture, mechanism, or small product detail.
  • Medium view: shows a person or object with enough surrounding context to explain the action.
  • Wide view: establishes a location, group, or relationship between elements.
  • Top-down or flat lay: makes arrangement and comparison easy to read.

State the crop in ordinary language: “a waist-up portrait,” “a full product view,” or “a wide establishing shot.” If the image will be cropped later, keep important features away from the edges.

Set the viewpoint and angle

Specify whether the viewer is at eye level, looking down, looking up, or positioned behind the subject. A low angle can make architecture feel imposing; an overhead view can clarify a tabletop arrangement. If perspective matters, describe the relationship directly: “camera at eye level, three-quarter view from the subject’s right.”

Place the subject deliberately

Say where the focal subject belongs relative to the frame: “subject on the right third,” “centered with symmetrical margins,” or “foreground figure in the lower-left.” Also identify what must remain clear: “leave uncluttered space across the upper-left for a title.” These directions are especially important for banners, thumbnails, and layouts that will receive text.

Select an aspect ratio

Match the ratio to the destination before you generate. A wide composition can be damaged when forced into a square crop, while a portrait-oriented subject may lose context in a banner. If your tool offers named sizes, choose the closest available option and repeat the intended use in the prompt. The ratio is a layout constraint, not a substitute for describing the crop.

Plan negative space

Negative space is deliberate room around the subject. Describe its location and quality: “smooth, low-detail background on the left,” “clear sky above the building,” or “dark empty margin on the right for white type.” Do not merely request “minimalism” if the real requirement is a text-safe area.

How do you describe visual style in actionable terms?

Style works best when it names visible characteristics rather than a general compliment. Google’s official prompt examples use concrete treatments such as oil painting, photorealistic imagery, sci-fi concept art, and watercolor illustration. OpenAI guidance likewise recommends specifying the desired style and visible details.

Name the medium or treatment

Start with one primary treatment: photorealistic photograph, watercolor illustration, ink drawing, editorial collage, clay animation still, or 3D render. Combining several unrelated media can make the result ambiguous. If you need a hybrid, state the hierarchy: “a realistic product photograph with a subtle paper-collage border.”

Specify materials and texture

Describe what surfaces should look and feel like: brushed aluminum, rough watercolor paper, translucent glass, matte ceramic, fine film grain, or crisp vector edges. Materials help distinguish an object from its surroundings and make a style request observable.

Choose a restrained palette

Name a few dominant colors and their role: “deep navy and warm amber with small teal accents,” “muted earth tones,” or “high-contrast black and ivory.” A palette is more useful than “colorful.” If brand or accessibility requirements apply, state which colors must remain distinct and where they appear.

Define contrast and detail

Use terms such as soft contrast, hard-edged shadows, low detail in the background, or finely resolved foreground texture. Avoid stacking contradictory directions such as “soft and harsh shadows everywhere.” Decide which region deserves detail and which should recede.

How should you plan lighting and color temperature?

Lighting controls emphasis, depth, and emotional tone. Describe the source, direction, and quality. OpenAI Academy gives the actionable example “soft natural light from a window on the left,” which communicates more than “beautiful lighting.”

Source and direction

  • Source: window light, overcast sky, studio softbox, candle, neon sign, or reflected daylight.
  • Direction: from the left, behind the subject, overhead, or rim light from the rear.
  • Quality: soft and diffused, crisp and directional, hazy, or high-contrast.

Connect lighting to the composition: “backlight the translucent leaves while keeping the foreground readable.” If the image must support text, avoid placing the brightest, busiest area behind the copy.

Temperature and mood

Use warm or cool language alongside a physical description: “cool blue ambient light with a warm desk lamp,” or “late-afternoon golden light with long shadows.” Mood words can supplement, but should not replace, source and direction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What constraints belong in the brief?

List requirements that materially affect the result. Constraints can include what must appear, what must remain absent, how the subject is oriented, and where detail must be withheld.

  • Required objects, people, symbols, or text-safe areas.
  • Orientation, count, or relationship: “three containers in a row,” “open laptop facing the viewer.”
  • Exclusions that prevent confusion: “no extra logos, no visible watermark, no crowd in the background.”
  • Crop and safety margins for later resizing.
  • Color, contrast, or accessibility needs.
  • Continuity requirements when making a variation: preserve the subject’s pose and camera angle.

Phrase constraints positively where possible: “keep the left third uncluttered” is easier to interpret than a long list of things not to do. Keep only constraints that matter; excessive restrictions can leave the generator little room to compose.

A practical visual-brief template

Assemble the decisions into a compact paragraph or a few labeled lines:

Purpose/deliverable: [what the image is for and its format].
Subject and action: [who or what, doing what].
Scene: [where it happens and only the useful context].
Composition: [framing, viewpoint, placement, aspect ratio, negative space].
Visual style: [medium, materials, texture, palette, contrast].
Lighting: [source, direction, quality, color temperature].
Constraints: [must include, preserve, exclude, or leave clear].

For a complex request, organize details as scene, subject, details, and constraints. A natural-language version might be: “Wide website hero image for an article about home energy monitoring. A homeowner checks a small display beside a window in a bright kitchen. Eye-level medium-wide view, person on the right third, clear low-detail counter space on the left for a headline, 16:9 composition. Photorealistic editorial photography, pale wood and soft green palette, realistic glass and metal textures, soft natural light from the left. No extra screens or readable brand marks.”

How long should an image prompt be?

Use the shortest wording that preserves the decisions the image needs. OpenAI Academy’s guidance says one to three clear sentences are often enough. A short prompt can still be specific if each phrase does useful work. Add detail when a missing decision causes a visible problem; remove decorative adjectives that do not change the image.

Separate essential constraints from flexible preferences. The subject, action, destination, crop, and text-safe area are usually essential. The exact texture of a background wall may be flexible. This balance gives the model a clear target without turning the brief into an inflexible checklist.

Decision axis Questions to ask What a strong choice does
Purpose and legibility Will the intended audience understand the subject and message quickly? Prioritizes a readable focal point at the final display size.
Framing and placement Does the crop fit the channel, and is there room for copy or controls? Protects important features and reserves usable negative space.
Style and medium Does the treatment fit the tone and context? Uses a recognizable medium with observable materials and texture.
Palette and lighting Do color and light direct attention where it belongs? Creates emphasis without making text or the subject hard to read.
Specificity versus flexibility Are essential constraints clear while minor details remain open? Controls the outcome without overconstraining interpretation.

These are editorial decision criteria derived from provider guidance, not a formal scoring system or validated test.

What should you do after the first generation?

Inspect the image against the brief rather than judging it only by overall impression. Mark which decisions succeeded and identify the single most important mismatch.

  1. Check purpose: can the image perform its intended job at the destination size?
  2. Check subject and action: is the focal object clear, and is the action understandable?
  3. Check composition: are the crop, viewpoint, placement, and text-safe area usable?
  4. Check style: do medium, materials, texture, palette, and contrast match the brief?
  5. Check lighting: is the intended source and direction visible without hiding key details?
  6. Choose one focused change: revise the largest problem and keep the parts that already work.

OpenAI describes requesting variations and adjusting composition or size. In practice, targeted edits make it easier to tell whether a change solved the problem. If the result feels crowded, change the framing or move the subject; if it feels too cold, adjust the light source or color temperature; if the medium is wrong, name it directly. Avoid rewriting every instruction after each attempt.

Common mismatch and focused fix

Symptom Likely planning gap Next instruction to try
Text area is busy Negative space was not located or described. “Keep the upper-left low-detail and evenly lit for a headline.”
Subject is too small Framing was vague. “Use a medium close-up; subject fills most of the frame.”
Scene feels generic Action or setting lacked concrete details. Add the specific action, location, and one or two meaningful props.
Style is inconsistent Several media or broad mood words competed. Name one primary medium and observable texture, palette, and contrast.
Lighting misses the mood Only an emotional adjective was supplied. Specify source, direction, quality, and warm or cool temperature.

Should you sketch the composition first?

A quick thumbnail can help when placement is difficult to explain in words. Draw rectangles for the final aspect ratio, mark the subject as simple shapes, and shade the area that must remain open for text. An artist sketchbook is optional; ordinary paper or a digital canvas works just as well. The cited guidance supports planning composition and placement, but does not make sketching necessary or recommend a particular product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the limits of prompt planning?

Clear planning improves communication with the model, but it cannot guarantee exact geometry, perfect text rendering, or pixel-level adherence to a placement instruction. Provider documentation describes composition and constraints as useful directions, not deterministic controls. Model behavior and interfaces can change, so check the current documentation for the image tool you use.

No relevant published statistic was identified in the official guidance reviewed that quantifies a percentage improvement or time saving from planning composition and style before generation. Treat the workflow as a practical method for making decisions explicit, not as a measured performance claim.

Final pre-generation checklist

  • Have I written the image’s purpose and destination?
  • Is the main subject unmistakable?
  • Have I stated the action or stable state?
  • Does the setting add useful context?
  • Are framing, viewpoint, placement, aspect ratio, and negative space explicit?
  • Did I name a visible medium, palette, texture, and contrast level?
  • Did I specify lighting source, direction, quality, and temperature?
  • Are essential inclusions, exclusions, and continuity requirements listed?
  • Can I remove any adjective that does not change a visible decision?
  • Do I know which single change I will make if the first result misses?
