A safe zoo day starts before you leave: check the zoo’s current rules, choose exhibits your child can handle, plan continuous supervision, stay behind barriers, and wash hands after animal areas. Treat every animal-contact space as potentially contaminated, even when animals look healthy. The zoo’s own visitor information is the final authority because hours, closures, contact rules, food policies, stroller access, and accessibility arrangements vary by facility.

1. Check the specific zoo before you go

Do not rely on a generic zoo checklist. Visit the facility’s official visitor-information page shortly before your trip and note the rules that apply to that location and date.

Confirm hours and entry arrangements

  • Check opening and closing times, timed-entry requirements, ticket instructions, and any limits on same-day admission.
  • Look for temporary closures, construction, weather notices, and exhibits that may be unavailable.
  • Save the zoo’s contact or guest-services details in case you need clarification on the day.

Read the rules for contact exhibits

“Touch” or feeding areas are not governed by one universal standard. The facility may specify which animals may be touched, where visitors may stand, how to touch an animal, whether food is supplied by staff, and which personal items must stay outside. CDC guidance says to follow written and verbal instructions at contact exhibits. If a rule is unclear, ask an employee before your child approaches an animal.

Check practical policies

  • Review bag, food, drink, stroller, and toy policies.
  • Read accessibility information, including routes, entrances, restrooms, and any reservation requirements.
  • Check whether a particular exhibit has age, height, or supervision restrictions.

These details can change independently of the zoo’s general admission information, so recheck them close to the visit rather than assuming last season’s rules still apply.

2. Decide whether the planned activities fit your child

Use the child’s ability, not just the child’s interest

A child who is excited about animals may still be unable to follow a barrier, food, or handwashing rule. Choose experiences your child can manage while staying close enough for you to intervene immediately. A crowded walk-through exhibit, a noisy feeding session, and a quiet viewing area place different demands on attention and impulse control.

Apply the under-five public-health restriction

CDC guidance says children younger than five should not touch reptiles, amphibians, or poultry at animal exhibits. This is an age-specific instruction, not a suggestion to relax the rule if a child appears calm or an animal appears clean.

Decide what “participation” means

Your child can observe, ask questions, draw what they see, or listen to a keeper without touching an animal. Planning non-contact alternatives prevents a disappointing moment from becoming an argument at the enclosure.

3. Use accreditation as one selection signal

If professional oversight matters to your family, verify the facility’s current status in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) directory. The directory listed 240 accredited institutions as of March 2026; that number is time-bound and can change.

AZA describes safety as one of the three core principles on which AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums operate. Accreditation can therefore be one useful input when comparing facilities, alongside the zoo’s current visitor rules, age-appropriate exhibits, and accessibility information. It is not a guarantee that an incident cannot happen, and it does not replace following staff instructions.

4. Make a simple family plan before leaving

Set three rules your child can repeat

Use short, positive instructions that are easy to remember:

  1. Stay with the responsible adult.
  2. Stand behind barriers and use the marked paths.
  3. Ask before touching, eating, or giving anything to an animal.

Explain that signs and staff directions override what the child may have done at another zoo or petting farm.

Choose a regrouping point

On arrival, identify a recognizable meeting place and show your child where guest services or staff posts are located. This is a family-planning measure, not a substitute for supervision. Very young children may not be able to navigate to the meeting point alone, so keep them within sight and reach whenever practical.

Pack ordinary day-out supplies

Bring items allowed by the facility and suited to the weather and your child’s routine. CDC outdoor-preparation guidance includes a first-aid kit as an optional item; it is a sensible general precaution, not zoo-specific equipment and not a guarantee against injury. Do not assume that a particular bag, food item, stroller, or drink is permitted until the zoo’s current policy confirms it.

5. Supervise continuously around animals

Keep a responsible adult in charge

Children should remain with a caregiver who is actively watching, rather than relying on an older child, a phone camera, or a group’s general attention. Rotate adults only after clearly transferring responsibility. At busy exhibits, stand where you can see both the child and the animal, not just the display sign.

Respect barriers and paths

Barriers are part of exhibit safety. Keep every part of the child’s body, stroller, and personal belongings on the visitor side unless staff explicitly direct otherwise. Never climb, lean over, reach through, or encourage a child to squeeze under a barrier. Do not throw coins, food, toys, stones, or other objects into a habitat. AZA’s visitor-safety guidance says visitors help protect animals by staying behind barriers and not throwing items into habitats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep hands and objects away from mouths

Do not let a child put fingers, pacifiers, cups, or toys near an animal’s mouth. Around animals, also prevent the child from putting their own fingers or other objects in their mouth. A seemingly gentle animal can move suddenly, and an object can carry germs even when no bite or scratch occurs.

6. Handle touch and feeding exhibits carefully

Follow the exhibit’s exact method

Some facilities provide a designated hand position, a one-way route, or a staff-directed touch. Follow the posted sequence and stop when an employee asks you to stop. Never improvise contact with an animal outside the approved area.

Do not bring your own food to animals

Keep human food and drinks away from animal areas, and never share your snack with an animal. Feeding an animal can harm the animal, provoke competition, or violate the facility’s rules even if the food seems harmless.

Leave personal items outside when required

CDC guidance specifically advises leaving items such as strollers, cups, and toys outside animal exhibits when the exhibit’s rules call for it. Use the designated storage or waiting area rather than placing belongings on a railing, floor, or habitat edge.

7. Treat animal areas as a hand-hygiene zone

Wash after contact and when leaving

CDC says to wash hands with soap and water after touching animals and after leaving animal areas, even if the child did not touch an animal. This includes children who only touched a fence, feeding tool, floor, or another surface inside the exhibit.

Use sanitizer only as a fallback

When soap and running water are unavailable, CDC says hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol can be used, followed by washing with soap and water when possible. Sanitizer is not a reason to skip the next available sink, and it should be stored where a young child cannot drink it.

Keep food separate from animal contact

Plan meals and snacks for a place away from animal areas. Wash hands before eating, particularly after leaving a contact exhibit. Keep bottles, pacifiers, and utensils out of animal spaces unless the facility explicitly permits them.

Understand why the rule applies to healthy-looking animals

CDC states: “Even animals that look clean and healthy can carry harmful germs.” From 2010 through 2015, CDC recorded about 100 outbreaks of illness in people linked to animals in public settings. That is a historical count across six years and multiple types of public animal venues, not an annual rate, a current estimate, or a zoo-only figure. It explains why handwashing and separation of food remain appropriate even when an exhibit appears clean.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Follow signs and staff directions when conditions change

Exhibit rules may change during feeding, veterinary work, crowd control, maintenance, or an animal’s unexpected behavior. Treat a closed gate, temporary sign, rope line, or staff instruction as authoritative, even if the exhibit was open earlier.

Do not attempt to retrieve a dropped toy, phone, hat, or stroller part from an enclosure. Tell an employee where it is and follow the facility’s recovery procedure. Visitors should not enter a restricted area or distract an animal to recover property.

9. Know what to do if someone is separated, injured, or frightened

If your group is separated

  1. Keep the remaining children with the responsible adult.
  2. Tell the nearest employee or guest-services desk immediately.
  3. Give the child’s name, clothing description, last known location, and any medical or communication information that helps staff.
  4. Use the meeting point only as part of the plan; do not send another child to search alone.

If a child is scratched, bitten, knocked down, or otherwise injured

  1. Move away from the animal and barrier without entering a restricted area.
  2. Alert zoo staff and follow their first-aid and reporting instructions.
  3. Do not try to handle an animal, clean an enclosure, or investigate the incident yourself.
  4. Follow any medical advice given by qualified professionals and the facility’s emergency process.

If an alarm or evacuation instruction occurs

Follow the zoo’s announcements, signs, and employee directions. AZA describes accreditation requirements that include emergency planning and drills for fire, relevant weather emergencies, visitor or staff injury, and animal escape. Those are facility-preparedness measures; they are not instructions for visitors to intervene or approach an escaped animal.

10. Compare facilities using evidence you can verify

There is no universal ranking of the safest zoo, and the available guidance does not score individual facilities. If you are choosing among nearby options, compare the following current, checkable information:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What to check Questions for the facility’s current information Why it matters
Accreditation status Is the zoo listed as currently accredited in the AZA directory? Provides one external oversight signal, but not a promise that incidents cannot occur.
Visitor rules Are hours, closures, entry procedures, food policies, stroller rules, and contact-exhibit instructions clearly posted? Lets you prepare for the rules that actually apply on your visit.
Age-appropriate experiences Can your child observe animals without entering a contact area, and are any age restrictions stated? Helps match the outing to the child’s ability to follow instructions; children under five should not touch reptiles, amphibians, or poultry at animal exhibits.
Accessibility information Does the facility explain accessible entrances, routes, restrooms, and exhibit access? Reduces surprises and identifies questions to resolve with the zoo before arrival.
On-site assistance Are guest-services locations and emergency-contact procedures identified? Gives your family a clear place to seek help if plans change.

11. A practical visit sequence

Use this order to turn the guidance into a low-stress routine:

  1. Several days before: Read the zoo’s official visitor page, confirm admission requirements, and identify closures, contact-exhibit rules, food restrictions, stroller policies, and accessibility details.
  2. Before choosing exhibits: Match the itinerary to your child’s ability to stay with an adult, remain behind barriers, and follow touch and handwashing instructions. Exclude reptile, amphibian, and poultry touching for children younger than five.
  3. Before leaving home: Pack permitted essentials and an optional compact first-aid kit. Avoid bringing food or objects that the facility prohibits in animal areas.
  4. At the entrance: Point out staff locations, choose a recognizable regrouping place, and repeat the three family rules: stay together, stay behind barriers, and ask before touching or feeding.
  5. At each exhibit: Read the sign, position yourself for active supervision, keep hands and belongings out of the habitat, and follow every staff direction.
  6. After animal areas: Wash hands with soap and water. Use 60% or higher alcohol sanitizer only when a sink is unavailable, then wash properly when you can.
  7. If anything changes: Stop, move to the visitor side of the barrier, and ask staff what to do. Never improvise an animal rescue, feeding, or emergency response.

12. The limits of a “safe” zoo plan

Good planning reduces avoidable hazards; it cannot make a public animal setting risk-free. Accreditation, clear signs, supervision, and handwashing each address a different part of the risk, and none replaces the others. Facility rules are local and may change, so the zoo’s current instructions take precedence over a general checklist.

For heat, severe weather, mobility needs, allergies, pregnancy, immune conditions, or other individual concerns, use the facility’s current guidance and seek individualized professional advice when appropriate. The general steps here are visitor-safety information, not personal medical guidance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

13. Extra planning for toddlers and preschoolers

Young children often need more hands-on supervision than a posted rule can convey. Keep a toddler close enough to stop a sudden reach toward a railing, animal, or dropped object. If the child uses a stroller, confirm in advance whether it may enter each exhibit and whether it must remain in a designated area. A stroller, cup, toy, or pacifier that travels through an animal space can also become a hand-to-mouth route for germs, so follow the facility’s instructions about leaving those items outside.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the visit around the child’s ability to wait, walk on marked paths, and follow a one-step instruction. If the child cannot reliably do those things, choose viewing areas rather than a contact exhibit. “Touching” is not required for a meaningful visit: watching a keeper, listening to animal sounds, or identifying animals from behind a barrier are valid alternatives.

14. Questions to ask at guest services

If the website does not answer a safety question, ask an employee before entering an exhibit. Useful questions include: Which animals may children touch? Is there a minimum age, height, or adult-to-child supervision requirement? Where should strollers, cups, toys, and pacifiers be left? Where is the nearest handwashing station? Which route is accessible? What should visitors do if a child becomes separated or an alarm sounds? Getting a clear answer is safer than guessing from another facility’s practice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to the zoo with a toddler?

Bring only items allowed by that zoo’s current policy and suited to the child’s routine. An optional compact first-aid kit is a reasonable general precaution. Confirm whether a stroller, drinks, toys, cups, or food may enter each exhibit; CDC guidance calls for leaving items such as strollers, cups, and toys outside animal areas when rules require it.

Can my child touch animals at the zoo?

Only where the facility explicitly permits contact and only by its posted or staff-directed method. Children younger than five should not touch reptiles, amphibians, or poultry at animal exhibits under CDC guidance. Observation is always an alternative when contact is restricted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I keep my child safe at the zoo?

Keep the child with a responsible adult, stay behind barriers and on marked paths, prevent reaching toward animals or their mouths, never feed animals or throw objects into habitats, and follow signs and staff instructions. Wash hands with soap and water after animal contact and whenever leaving animal areas.

Is hand sanitizer enough after a petting or touch exhibit?

Soap and running water are preferred. If they are unavailable, CDC says sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol can be used as a temporary measure; wash with soap and water when possible. Keep sanitizer where a young child cannot drink it.

Are accredited zoos guaranteed to be safe?

No. AZA identifies safety as one of the three core principles for accredited zoos and aquariums, but accreditation is not a promise that incidents cannot occur. Check current accreditation status, local visitor rules, accessibility information, and age-appropriate exhibits, then supervise your child.

What should I do if my child is separated from me?

Keep any other children with you and notify the nearest employee or guest-services desk immediately. Provide the child’s name, clothing description, last known location, and useful medical or communication information. Do not send another child to search alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if my child drops a toy or phone into an enclosure?

Do not reach over a barrier or enter a restricted area. Tell an employee where the item fell and follow the facility’s recovery procedure. Staff can decide whether and how it can be retrieved safely.

What if a child is bitten, scratched, or knocked down?

Move to the visitor side of the barrier, alert zoo staff, and follow the facility’s first-aid and reporting instructions. Do not handle the animal, clean the enclosure, or investigate the incident yourself. Seek qualified medical advice as directed.

The Bottom Line

Plan from the zoo’s current visitor information, match activities to your child’s ability, and supervise actively at every animal area. Stay behind barriers, never feed animals, follow contact-exhibit rules, keep personal items and food out of animal spaces when required, and wash hands with soap and water after leaving them. These steps reduce avoidable risk without promising a risk-free visit.
