Start by identifying what the cable carries and which local rules apply. Mains-power wiring and communications cable have different requirements; the right cable, protection, wall-entry detail, and permits depend on the cable’s rating, exposure, wall construction, and jurisdiction. For electrical power work, use a qualified electrician when required by local law or when you are unsure how to do it safely.
Identify the cable and check local requirements first
Before choosing a route or drilling, establish whether the cable carries mains power or communications signals such as coaxial, Ethernet, or optical fiber. Those categories are not interchangeable: a cable’s rating and permitted installation method depend on its use and exposure. Local code adoption, permit requirements, and inspection rules also vary.
- For power wiring: check the locally adopted electrical and building codes, permits, and inspection requirements. Have a qualified electrician handle the work when required or when the circuit, protection, or code requirements are unfamiliar.
- For communications wiring: confirm the cable classification and the locally adopted rules for bringing that cable into a building. Requirements for outside-plant cable may differ from those for cable intended for indoor use.
- For either type: account for sunlight, water, physical impact, and burial if applicable, as well as the exterior finish, wall cavity, and any fire rating.
The International Code Council’s 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) identifies Schedule 80 PVC conduit among methods for protecting exposed wiring subject to physical damage, and addresses sunlight-resistant marking for conductors or cables exposed to direct sunlight. Those are examples tied to the code’s conditions, not universal instructions that Schedule 80 PVC is required or suitable for every cable. Check the locally adopted code and the cable’s listing and rating. See the 2021 IRC wiring-methods chapter.

Plan the full path, not just the hole through the wall. A cable exposed outdoors may need protection from sunlight, water, or impact; the appropriate cable and protection method depend on its rating and the installation conditions. For example, a conduit material cited for physical-damage protection in one IRC provision should not be treated as a default for every circuit or communications line.

Consider the exterior cladding, any drainage cavity behind it, the wall’s interior finish, and the route’s proximity to other services. Keep the cable from rubbing against a sharp edge at the opening, and avoid a route that compromises the wall’s weather-management or fire-resistance features. If the cable will be buried or pass through a location with unusual exposure, verify the applicable cable and protection requirements before proceeding.
Detail the wall opening for water, abrasion, and condensation
A wall penetration needs to manage water as part of the wall assembly. Simply applying caulk around a cable is not a universal weatherproofing detail: the right entry hardware and seal depend on the cable size, cladding, cavity drainage, and wall construction. The cable must also be protected from abrasion where it passes through the opening.

BRANZ’s New Zealand guidance treats cable penetrations through exterior cavity walls as a water-management issue and notes that solid conduit can protect cable against damage. Its discussion reflects New Zealand building and wiring requirements, not a rule for other jurisdictions. Read BRANZ guidance on cables through exterior cavity walls.
Condensation can also matter where a sleeve or raceway crosses between areas at different temperatures. The 2021 IRC excerpt says that, where condensation is a known concern, an approved material is used to seal the sleeve against warm-air circulation into the colder section. That specific provision is not a substitute for a wall-appropriate weatherproof entry detail. Check the IRC wiring-methods provisions.

Preserve fire protection at rated walls and floors
If the route crosses a firewall or a rated horizontal fire separation, the penetration may need a firestop system that preserves the required fire rating. Ontario’s Building Code provision reviewed for this topic requires applicable penetrations to use a firestop system meeting the required rating. That is an Ontario-specific provision, not a universal detail; ask the local building official or a qualified professional what applies to the assembly in your location. See Ontario’s Building Code.

Some outside-plant communications, coaxial, or optical-fiber cable may be subject to additional limits when it enters a building, particularly if it is unlisted for indoor use. A 2024 NFPA Panel 16 public-comment submittal reproduces proposed NEC Article 800 text describing conditions for certain unlisted cables, including a maximum interior length of 15 m (50 ft), termination or enclosure details, and limits on where the cable may be run. The document is a public-comment submittal, not proof that this text is adopted NEC language or applies in your jurisdiction.

Before work begins
- Identify whether the cable carries power or communications signals and confirm its rating for the route.
- Check local code adoption, permits, inspections, and whether the work requires a licensed electrician.
- Choose protection appropriate to sunlight, water, impact, burial, and the wall assembly; do not assume one conduit or sealant fits all cases.
- Plan an entry that manages water, prevents cable abrasion, and addresses condensation where relevant.
- Determine whether the wall or floor is fire-rated and preserve its required fire protection.
- For outside-plant communications cable, verify its indoor-use classification and locally applicable entry and termination requirements.
