Place the two speakers and your listening position at roughly the three corners of an equilateral triangle, keep the left and right paths as symmetrical as the room allows, put the tweeters near seated ear height, and adjust toe-in and wall distance in small steps. Start with the ranges in the table below, then keep the position that gives you a locked center vocal, even bass and a stable stereo stage.

Start with geometry, not a favorite measurement

Stereo imaging depends on both speakers reaching your ears under similar conditions. In a small room, matching the left and right distances to the front wall, side walls and listener is usually more important than finding one supposedly perfect number. An asymmetrical placement can pull vocals toward one side and make bass different in each channel.

Use the speakers and your chair as the three points of an approximately equilateral triangle. Sonodyne describes this geometry for monitor placement, and Cambridge Audio calls it the standard starting point for stereo. Teufel Support gives compact speakers a minimum separation of about 1.2 m (2026 guidance). If the speakers are 1.2 m apart, begin with your ears about 1.2 m from each speaker; increase both distances together when the room permits.

Measure from the acoustic centers of the speaker fronts, not from the outside edges of cabinets. Keep the cabinets facing the same direction and at the same height. If one speaker must be closer to a wall than the other, move both speakers and the listener until the mismatch is as small as possible rather than treating one channel as an afterthought.

Useful starting dimensions

Placement dimension Starting point Qualification
Speaker-to-speaker separation About 1.2 m minimum for compact speakers Teufel Support, 2026; a starting value, not a universal limit
Distance behind each speaker 60–120 cm Teufel Support, 2026; adjust for room, cabinet and port behavior
Distance to side walls 60–90 cm Teufel Support, 2026; symmetry matters more than hitting one exact figure
Alternative front and side-wall start 1–2 ft (305–610 mm) from each wall TAD Compact Reference CR1TX owner’s manual, 2019
Clearance from reflecting surfaces At least 40 cm Sonodyne product guidance; use as a minimum starting point where possible
Clearance from room corners At least 0.6 m Boston Acoustics manual guidance; corners often exaggerate bass
Seated tweeter height Approximately 91–106 cm Teufel Support, 2026; align as closely as practical with your ear height

These figures overlap but are not contradictory: manufacturers publish different starting assumptions for different rooms and products. The TAD manual, for example, uses a shorter 305–610 mm wall range than Teufel’s broader 60–120 cm recommendation. Use the speaker’s own manual first, then use the room’s response and stereo image to refine the result.

Set up the room in a repeatable sequence

  1. Clear the test area. Remove objects that can rattle, block a rear port or force one cabinet into a corner. Mark the centerline of the wall behind the speakers with removable tape.
  2. Find the room’s most symmetrical position. Choose a wall where the left and right boundaries are as similar as possible. Avoid placing one speaker beside an open doorway while the other is beside a solid wall if another arrangement is available.
  3. Place the speakers on the same front-wall line. Start with the chosen rear-wall clearance and keep both cabinet fronts equally far from that wall. If a speaker has a rear-firing port, leave the clearance specified by its manual; do not push it against the wall to save space.
  4. Set the initial separation. Begin at about 1.2 m or the largest spacing that still lets you sit at a comparable distance from both speakers. Compact bookshelf models can work well in near-field layouts, so closer listening is acceptable when the room cannot accommodate a large triangle.
  5. Position the chair on the centerline. Put your ears at the third point of the triangle. Do not place the chair hard against the back wall if moving it forward is possible; a small change in listening distance can be more useful than moving only one speaker.
  6. Match the side clearances. Measure from each speaker to its nearest side boundary. If the numbers differ, shift the pair together or move the chair until the left and right geometry is as close as the furniture allows.
  7. Set the height. Adjust stands, shelves or monitor supports so the tweeters are close to seated ear height. Teufel’s approximate 91–106 cm range is a practical reference, but your actual ear height takes priority. The supports must be stable and must not obstruct a port.
  8. Apply a modest toe-in. Turn both speakers toward the listening position. Teufel suggests about 15 degrees as a starting point; TAD says to turn the speakers inward, while Paradigm recommends aiming the axes to cross just behind the listener.
  9. Listen before making another change. Use a centered vocal, a recording with sustained low notes and a track with obvious left-to-right ambience. Change only one variable at a time and move a cabinet by only a few centimetres between tests.

Choose the right wall distance

Moving a compact speaker toward a wall generally increases boundary reinforcement, especially in the bass. That can make a small cabinet sound fuller, but excessive reinforcement can become a one-note boom and can vary sharply between the two channels. Moving the cabinet away from the wall usually reduces that effect and can improve depth, at the cost of floor space.

Use the speaker manual’s port and clearance instructions before applying a generic range. TAD’s CR1TX manual starts at 305–610 mm from both the front and side walls, with the listening position roughly equal to speaker spacing. Teufel’s 2026 support guidance starts at 60–120 cm behind the speakers and 60–90 cm from the side walls. Sonodyne specifies at least 40 cm from reflecting surfaces. Treat all of these as starting positions: cabinet alignment, port location, room dimensions and furnishings change the audible result.

Why corners are especially difficult

A corner reinforces sound from two boundaries at once. Boston Acoustics recommends at least 0.6 m from room corners, and Teufel also warns against corner placement. If furniture forces a corner, move both speakers and the listener toward the room center while preserving left/right symmetry. Do not compensate for one corner by placing only the opposite speaker against a different boundary; that creates unequal bass and reflection paths.

Set tweeter height and toe-in for a stable center

The tweeter carries much of the directional information that makes a voice appear between the speakers. Aim for tweeters near your seated ear height rather than pointing one speaker at the floor or ceiling. A shelf that leaves the tweeters well below your ears can blur the center image; use stable stands or another rigid support when practical.

Toe-in controls the trade-off between image focus and listening-area width. With the cabinets aimed straight ahead, the center may sound broad but less precise. A slight inward angle can improve the stereo image; Teufel Support states, “Yes, a slight toe-in can improve the stereo image.” More angle often produces a sharper central vocal for the person in the exact listening seat, while narrowing the sweet spot for people sitting off-axis.

Start near 15 degrees, then aim each speaker at your head. If the center sounds too diffuse, increase the angle a little. If the vocal becomes unnaturally narrow or the treble changes dramatically when you move your head, reduce the angle. The useful endpoint is not a number: it is a voice that stays in one small point between the speakers without making the rest of the stage collapse.

Make small-room compromises deliberately

A textbook triangle may not fit between a desk, sofa and doorway. Preserve the relationships that matter most: equal left/right distances, a listener centered between the speakers, and enough clearance for the cabinet and its port. Move the seat and both speakers together instead of sacrificing symmetry one side at a time.

Layout How to implement it What to watch
Symmetric near-field Place the speakers close together on a desk or short wall, then sit at approximately the same distance from each one. Keep tweeters near ear level and isolate the cabinets from a resonant desktop; the stage should remain centered when you move your head slightly.
Long-wall compromise Use the wall that gives the most equal side boundaries, even if the speakers sit closer to the listener than a conventional living-room system. Compact speakers are often well suited to this shorter listening distance; avoid putting the chair directly against a rear wall if it can move forward.
Furniture-constrained placement Shift the pair and the seat together until each speaker has the closest possible matching clearance. Do not let one cabinet occupy a corner or doorway while the other has open space; compensate by moving the entire arrangement, not one channel.
Shelf placement Use the shelf only if it can support both cabinets securely and leave the manufacturer’s rear clearance unobstructed. A low shelf can put tweeters below ear height; a narrow or hollow shelf can add vibration and coloration.

Klipsch Support describes placement as trial and error because every room, speaker and component setup differs. That is a reason to use a controlled process, not a reason to move everything randomly. Mark each successful position with tape so you can return to it after testing another arrangement.

Control reflections without over-treating the room

Windows, bare plaster and hard floors can reflect the first sound arriving after the direct signal. Strong early reflections reduce image precision and can make the room sound brighter. Teufel recommends carpets, curtains or absorbers where reflections are obvious. ADAM Audio specifies at least 40 cm from surrounding walls to reduce early reflections that degrade sound.

Begin with the speaker distance and symmetry before buying acoustic treatment. A rug between the speakers and chair can reduce floor reflection; curtains can soften a large window behind or beside the system. Do not cover a rear port or wedge a thick absorber directly against a cabinet unless the speaker maker allows it. Furnishings should reduce an obvious reflection while leaving the direct path from each tweeter to your ears clear.

There is often no single position that maximizes both bass smoothness and stereo depth. Cambridge Audio describes the final location as a compromise between the spot with the best bass and the spot with the best stereo image. Choose the position that keeps both defects moderate rather than optimizing one at the expense of the other.

Use stands that support the placement goal

A pair of bookshelf or compact monitor stands is useful when furniture leaves the tweeters too low. Select stands that are heavy and stable enough for the exact speaker, have a top plate that fits the cabinet, and allow the required rear and side clearance. Verify the stand’s load rating and dimensions before purchase; a stand that is too small can be less stable than a solid shelf.

Place each stand on an even surface and check that the two tweeters are at matching heights. Secure the speakers according to the stand maker’s instructions if children, pets or vibration make tipping possible. The stand is a placement aid, not a substitute for symmetry: it should let you reproduce the same distances and toe-in on both sides.

Evaluate each change with three listening checks

  1. Center-image stability: play a centered spoken voice or vocal. It should appear between the cabinets, not cling to the left or right speaker. Lean your head slightly left and right; a small movement should not make the image jump abruptly.
  2. Bass smoothness: use familiar music with sustained bass. Full bass is useful; a single booming note or a hollow gap indicates that a boundary or listening position is exciting a room mode. Move both speakers or the chair a few centimetres and test again.
  3. Spatial width and depth: use a recording with ambience or percussion spread across the stage. Teufel recommends checking clearly perceivable spatiality after each adjustment. The stage should extend beyond the cabinet edges without collapsing toward one side.

Write down the position, toe-in and listening distance for every test. Change only one factor—rear clearance, side clearance, separation, chair distance, height or toe-in—before judging the next version. Small-room acoustics can make a change seem dramatic at one seat and insignificant a short distance away.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely placement cause First adjustment
Center vocal pulls left or right Unequal speaker-to-listener distance, side-wall reflection or furniture asymmetry Re-measure both paths, center the chair and match side clearances before changing tone controls.
Bass is boomy on one side One cabinet is nearer a corner or boundary Move the pair away from corners, beginning with at least 0.6 m where possible, and keep the listener centered.
Bass is thin Speakers or chair are at a room cancellation point, or the cabinets are too far from boundaries for the room Move both speakers or the chair a few centimetres, then compare with the previous marked position.
Voice sounds vague between speakers Tweeters too low, speakers too far apart for the listening distance, or insufficient toe-in Raise the tweeters toward seated ear height, restore an approximate equilateral triangle and add a small amount of toe-in.
Sweet spot is uncomfortably narrow Excessive toe-in Reduce the angle gradually; aim for axes crossing just behind the listener or a less aggressive angle.
Treble sounds harsh or glassy Strong reflections from a window, bare wall or hard floor Add a rug or curtains, increase clearance from the reflecting surface where possible and recheck the direct path.
Sound changes when a speaker is moved close to the wall Boundary reinforcement or a rear port interacting with the wall Return to the manufacturer’s clearance range and test a larger gap before changing toe-in.

A practical final checklist

  • Both speakers are on the same front-wall line and have matching left/right geometry.
  • The separation and listening distance form an approximately equilateral triangle; compact systems can use a near-field version of that triangle.
  • Neither speaker is in a corner; at least 0.6 m from corners is a useful Boston Acoustics starting point.
  • Rear and side clearances follow the speaker manual first, with the cited 305–610 mm, 40 cm, or 60–120 cm ranges used only as starting references.
  • Tweeters are close to seated ear height, approximately 91–106 cm in Teufel’s guidance.
  • Toe-in is modest and equal on both sides; adjust it until a vocal locks in the center without an overly narrow sweet spot.
  • Stands or shelves are stable, correctly rated and do not block ports.
  • One variable was changed at a time, in increments of only a few centimetres.
  • The final position passes the centered-voice, smooth-bass and stable-stage tests.

TAD’s CR1TX owner’s manual summarizes why this care matters: “Speaker placement within the listening room will have a great impact upon the total performance of TAD Compact Reference speaker system in terms of bass performance, tonal accuracy, and imaging.” In a small room, careful symmetry and controlled experiments usually deliver a larger improvement than chasing a single published distance.
