Place and finish a glass ionomer cement (GIC) restoration by following the selected product’s current instructions for use (IFU), not a category-wide recipe. The material type determines tooth conditioning, powder–liquid or capsule handling, working time, moisture protection, and when finishing is safe. The sequence is: confirm the indication, prepare and condition as directed, mix and adapt during the glossy-to-gel stage, protect the setting surface, then finish at the product-specific time.
Clinical scope: This is a clinician-facing overview, not a treatment plan for a particular patient. Use the current IFU, local regulations, and professional judgment for every case. The American Dental Association (ADA) describes glass ionomers as generally intended for non-load-bearing fillings. Their relatively low stress-bearing properties and greater susceptibility to abrasive wear than resin composites make material and site selection critical; do not assume that every GIC is suitable for a posterior contact, a high-load area, or a core build-up.
1. Select the material before preparing the tooth
“Glass ionomer cement” includes conventional auto-cure materials, resin-modified glass ionomers and other systems with different indications. The restorative product, not the generic material name, controls the clinical workflow. GC Australasia’s Glass Ionomer Restorative Cement (GIC) Usage Guide compares products such as Fuji BULK, EQUIA Forte Fil with its coating system, Fuji II LC, Fuji VII EP/Fuji VII and Fuji IX variants. The guide illustrates how handling, aesthetics, clinical case and timing vary; it is not a substitute for the current IFU for the product in your hand.

- Confirm whether the product is indicated for the planned restoration, tooth type and cavity class.
- Assess occlusal loading, contact location, remaining tooth structure and the patient’s caries-risk and moisture-control circumstances.
- Do not use a general “GIC is suitable for posterior teeth” assumption. The ADA’s material overview specifically cautions about non-load-bearing use and abrasive wear.
- Determine whether the product is conventional auto-cure, resin-modified or another formulation, because this affects setting behavior, light-curing, protection and finishing.

Record these details before starting. A guide that is older than the current product labeling can still explain the principles, but the manufacturer’s current regional IFU takes precedence.
2. Prepare the tooth and establish moisture control
Prepare and clean the tooth according to the selected product’s IFU. Remove unsupported or infected structure as clinically indicated, preserve sound tissue, and create access that permits adaptation and finishing. The exact cavity design depends on the restoration and tooth; no universal preparation outline applies to all GIC products.
Control saliva, blood and sulcular fluid
Use the isolation method appropriate for the case and product. Keep the field clean while preserving the surface condition required by the IFU. A glass ionomer can be damaged by contamination during early set, but excessive desiccation can also compromise a surface that should remain slightly moist. Do not dry the dentin aggressively simply because the field looks cleaner.
Clean without leaving a residue
Remove debris and temporary materials, rinse thoroughly and leave the substrate in the condition specified by the IFU. If a liner, base or adhesive is planned, verify compatibility; do not add an unlisted bonding step. StatPearls’ review of glass ionomer cement provides background on placement and protection, but product-specific directions remain controlling.

3. Condition only when and how the IFU directs
Conditioning is product-dependent. Some GIC systems use a polyalkenoic-acid conditioner to remove the smear layer and improve wetting; others specify a different preparation or no separate conditioner. Apply only the named conditioner at the stated concentration and time.
Example: GC CAVITY CONDITIONER
GC America describes CAVITY CONDITIONER as a component used before glass-ionomer restorative materials, bases, liners or core build-up materials. Its product page states a 10-second application, followed by thorough rinsing and blot drying. That sequence belongs to this conditioner and its indicated use; it is not a universal 10-second rule for every GIC or every conditioner.
- Apply the selected conditioner to the prepared surfaces for the exact IFU time.
- Rinse thoroughly so residual conditioner does not remain on the tooth.
- Blot dry or otherwise leave the surface exactly as directed. Avoid desiccating dentin when the IFU calls for a moist substrate.
- Proceed immediately to mixing and placement so the conditioned surface is not contaminated.
4. Mix and place during the material’s manipulation stage
Dispense a capsule or measure powder and liquid using the manufacturer’s method. The powder-to-liquid ratio is not interchangeable between products. A hand-mixed cement that is too dry may lose flow and adaptation; an overly liquid mix may alter strength, working time and setting behavior. Do not correct a failed proportion by adding powder or liquid after the stated mixing sequence.

Recognize the glossy stage
GC Australasia’s guide states: GIC Manipulation time includes an initial wet and glossy stage, which is essential for establishing chemical bonding to the tooth.
During this stage, the mixed cement should appear wet and glossy. Adapt it to the conditioned surface while that gloss is present and avoid prolonged manipulation that strips the material’s reactive surface.

Use the gel stage for contouring, not for indefinite manipulation
The same guide describes a short gel stage after the initial gloss. The material can be contoured during this phase, but manipulation time ends shortly after surface gloss is lost. Use the product’s stated working time and the visual cue together; the appearance cannot replace the timed IFU, especially when room temperature, slab temperature or mixing method differs from the manufacturer’s test conditions.
Adapt without incorporating voids
- Transfer the mix with the recommended instrument or capsule nozzle.
- Adapt from the deepest area outward, keeping the material in contact with the prepared walls.
- Overfill only as much as needed for contouring and removal of excess.
- Shape proximal and occlusal anatomy while the cement is in the permitted gel stage.
- Stop active manipulation when the IFU time expires or the material loses the specified working characteristics.
For a resin-modified product, follow the stated light-curing sequence and light output requirements. Do not light-cure a conventional auto-cure material unless its labeling expressly permits that step.
5. Protect the restoration while it sets
Glass ionomer is vulnerable to both water contamination and dehydration during early set. GC’s guide defines the moisture-critical period as beginning at the start of mixing and instructs clinicians to avoid moisture contamination during it. Protection therefore starts with mixing, not when finishing begins.

Choose the protective method specified for the product
- Maintain isolation for the entire moisture-critical period stated in the IFU.
- If isolation cannot be guaranteed during a restorative procedure, GC’s guide recommends immediate application of a light-cured resin coating, giving EQUIA Forte Coat as an example. Confirm that the coating is approved for the selected restorative system.
- Do not substitute a coating, varnish or petroleum product simply because it is available. The guide separately names cocoa butter as preferred protection for certain surface-protection uses; that example should not be conflated with the restorative-coating recommendation.
- Keep the surface free of saliva, blood, spray and uncontrolled air drying until the stated protection interval has passed.
Check the coating before curing
Apply a thin, continuous layer without pooling at the margin. Cure for the exact time and with the light intensity specified by the coating IFU. Inspect the margin after curing; repair or remove excess only by a method allowed for that system. A coating does not make an unsuitable restoration suitable for heavy loading.

6. Finish at the product-specific time
Finishing too early can tear or roughen a partially set cement; delaying too long can make excess removal unnecessarily difficult. Confirm the finishing window in the current IFU before touching the restoration with a bur, strip, disc or polisher.
Product example: Gold Label IX
GC India’s Gold Label IX product page states that final finishing may be completed under water six minutes from the start of mixing. The time is measured from mixing, not from placement or the end of contouring, and it applies to that product and regional product page. It is not a category-wide six-minute rule.
Why other GICs may require different intervals
GC Australasia’s comparison guide displays different manipulation, moisture-critical and finishing times for its listed materials. Conventional and resin-reinforced products can differ in set kinetics, surface hardness and finishing recommendations. Use the exact interval, coolant instruction and instrument sequence for the chosen product rather than averaging times from several products.
Recommended Free Tools
Use instruments that match the IFU
- Remove gross excess with the instrument and motion specified by the manufacturer.
- Use matrix strips, finishing strips, discs, burs or polishing systems only when approved for the material and surface.
- Maintain water cooling only when the IFU permits it; uncontrolled spray during early set can damage texture.
- Inspect margins, proximal contact, occlusion and surface texture under good illumination and magnification.
What the older finishing study does—and does not—show
An abstract by Hannig and Rahlf in Deutsche zahnarztliche Zeitschrift (46(3), 232–235, 1991) compared finishing procedures for three GICs. It reports that flexible discs at 24 hours produced the best finishing result among the procedures tested and that early finishing with water spray after 15 minutes was detrimental to surface texture. This is limited historical evidence from an abstract, not a contemporary consensus or a replacement for the current product IFU. It should not be used to override a labeled six-minute, delayed or otherwise product-specific finishing instruction.

7. Compare options when more than one GIC is plausible
When two materials appear clinically possible, compare them on the factors that actually change the procedure. Aesthetic preference alone should not decide a restoration that exceeds the material’s load indication.
| Decision factor | Questions to answer before treatment | Why it changes the workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Site and loading | Is the area non-load-bearing, and what occlusal or abrasion forces will it receive? | ADA cautions that GICs have relatively low stress-bearing properties and greater abrasive wear than resin composites. |
| Material class | Is it conventional auto-cure, resin-modified or another formulation? | Setting, light-curing, moisture protection and finishing can differ. |
| Conditioning | Does the IFU require a named conditioner, and for how long? | Conditioner identity, application time, rinsing and drying determine the substrate state. |
| Manipulation time | What is the powder–liquid or capsule protocol, and when does working time end? | Placement and contouring must occur before loss of the permitted working characteristics. |
| Moisture protection | How long is the moisture-critical period, and is a coating required? | Isolation and surface protection must cover the interval beginning at mixing. |
| Finishing | When may excess be removed, what coolant is allowed and which tools are compatible? | Early or incompatible finishing can damage texture or the margin. |
| Aesthetics | What opacity, shade and surface appearance are indicated for the site? | Cosmetic requirements may favor one indicated product, but do not expand its load indication. |
8. Troubleshoot common procedural failures
The mix loses gloss before adaptation
Likely causes include delayed transfer, excessive mixing, an incorrect ratio or an overheated slab. Discard a mix that has exceeded its manipulation time; do not re-liquefy it with additional liquid. Recheck the capsule activation, ratio, room temperature and timing method before remaking the restoration.
Saliva or water contacts the surface during early set
Stop the source of contamination and assess the product’s IFU. Some systems permit a specified coating; others require a different response. Do not assume that wiping and continuing will restore the original surface. If the contaminated layer cannot be managed within the labeled procedure, remove and replace the material.
The surface appears chalky or cracked
Desiccation, premature finishing, an incorrect mix or inadequate protection can produce a compromised surface. Maintain the specified moisture balance, protect from the start of mixing and postpone finishing until the labeled time. A coating may protect a properly placed restoration, but it does not correct a fundamentally defective mix.
Finishing opens a margin or roughens the surface
Check whether the material had reached the product’s finishing time and whether water spray or the selected instrument was allowed. Use controlled, light pressure and the manufacturer’s sequence. If a marginal defect cannot be corrected without reducing the restoration below acceptable form, replace the restoration rather than repeatedly abrading it.
Occlusion is high after set
Verify occlusion at the appropriate stage permitted by the IFU and adjust with compatible instruments. Reassess whether the selected material is indicated for that load. A technically well-finished GIC can still fail if the site exceeds its stress-bearing indication.
Quick Recap

10. Key source qualifications
- The ADA’s Materials for Direct Restorations, last updated August 16, 2024, provides general material context and states that its informational page does not establish a standard of care.
- GC Australasia’s GIC Usage Guide is a manufacturer guide that appears older; verify every time and product designation against the current IFU.
- GC America’s CAVITY CONDITIONER page supplies the product-specific 10-second application, rinse and blot-dry sequence.
- GC India’s Gold Label IX page supplies the product- and region-specific six-minute-under-water finishing statement.
- StatPearls is a secondary review for background; it does not supersede product labeling.
- Hannig and Rahlf’s 1991 abstract is historical comparative evidence, not a universal finishing protocol.
