Place the sensor in the occupied room, roughly 3–6 feet (0.9–1.8 m) above the floor, with unobstructed airflow and at least 50 cm from people when possible. Keep it away from windows, doors, vents, heaters, sunlight, humidifiers and air cleaners. Let it stabilize, record readings during normal occupancy, and calibrate CO₂ only by following the exact device manual. Temperature and humidity usually need a placement check and a manufacturer-supported offset rather than a universal home calibration routine.
Decide what you want the sensor to measure
There is no single “correct” location for every installation. A monitor beside a bed answers how air changes around a sleeping occupant; one in a kitchen reflects cooking and appliance activity; one near a return-air grille describes air entering the ventilation system. Write down the question first:
- Room-level conditions: choose a representative occupied area, such as a desk, sofa or dining table.
- Sleeping conditions: place it in the bedroom’s occupied zone, but not directly beside the sleeper’s face.
- Ventilation performance: use a stable location where occupants spend time, then compare readings with windows, doors or mechanical ventilation in their normal states.
- Problem investigation: temporarily compare locations to identify drafts, warm surfaces, humidifier plumes or other local effects.
One monitor cannot represent a whole house. A closed bedroom, open-plan living area and basement can have different carbon-dioxide, temperature and humidity patterns. For a large or multi-room home, compare locations or use more than one instrument.
Where to place the monitor
Use the occupied breathing zone
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s indoor-sensor guidance recommends placing sensors near the typical breathing-zone height of 3–6 feet. A shelf, side table or wall mount in that range usually works better than the floor or ceiling. Keep the housing level and make sure the inlet and outlet openings are not covered by books, curtains or decorative objects.

Keep it away from direct exhaled breath
People are concentrated CO₂ sources. The UK Health and Safety Executive advises keeping CO₂ monitors more than 50 cm from people when possible. A device directly in front of a face can show a short-lived plume rather than the room’s mixed air. This is especially important when checking a reading by breathing on the sensor; that is not a valid calibration test.
Avoid local sources and sinks
Do not install the monitor where a small airflow or heat source dominates its inlet. Keep it away from:
- Open windows and exterior doors, where outdoor air can produce an unrepresentative low CO₂ reading or rapid temperature change.
- Heating and cooling supply registers, return grilles and fans, unless the purpose is specifically to measure that airflow.
- Radiators, stoves, televisions, chargers and other warm surfaces.
- Direct sunlight, including sunbeams that move across the room during the day.
- Humidifiers, kettles, showers and clothes-drying areas.
- Portable air cleaners or exhaust fans that alter the nearby air stream.
- High shelves, corners and enclosed cabinets where air mixes differently from the occupied zone.
Health Canada notes that personal heaters and humidifiers can interfere with thermostats and humidity sensors. The same microclimates can bias a combined home monitor.

Provide free airflow
Leave clear space around the sensing openings according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not place the unit inside a drawer, behind a monitor, under a cushion or flush against a wall if that blocks circulation. Passive-diffusion CO₂ sensors need room air to reach the sensing element; a pump-based instrument has different installation requirements, so follow its manual.

Set up a useful measurement session
- Install and power the unit as specified. Fit the supplied power adapter or batteries, enable the required measurement mode and check that the vents are open.
- Choose a representative location. Use the breathing-zone height and the separation from occupants described above.
- Allow stabilization. The correct warm-up time is device-specific. Do not interpret the first display value as the room average unless the manual says the instrument is ready immediately.
- Record context. Note the room, height, date and time, number of occupants, windows and doors, heating or cooling state, fans, cooking, showers and any unusual activity.
- Collect repeated readings. Observe ordinary occupied periods rather than relying on one snapshot. For example, record a bedroom overnight and a home office during a normal work session, keeping the location unchanged.
- Compare like with like. When evaluating a change, use the same device, position, occupancy and ventilation state whenever possible.
Documenting the location matters as much as documenting the number. Moving a sensor between a desk, window ledge and HVAC outlet can create apparent “changes” that are really placement changes.
Calibrate CO₂ correctly
CO₂ calibration is not interchangeable with temperature or relative-humidity adjustment. The procedure, reference value, timing and acceptable conditions depend on the monitor and its sensor module. Read the manual for the exact model before changing a calibration setting.
Automatic baseline correction
Many instruments offer automatic baseline correction, sometimes called automatic self-calibration (ASC). The algorithm assumes that the sensor will periodically encounter a known low background, commonly outdoor air near 400 ppm, and uses that observation to correct its baseline over time. That assumption is model-specific and may fail in a home that remains occupied or poorly ventilated around the clock.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor example, Sensirion’s SCD4x datasheet, version 1.7 (April 2025), describes ASC that assumes exposure to outdoor fresh air at 400 ppm for more than three minutes after each accumulated week of operation, with additional measurement-mode requirements. This is documentation for the SCD4x family, not a universal schedule for consumer monitors. If a home never reaches the assumed background, disable or configure the feature only when the manufacturer permits it; do not invent a substitute interval.

Forced recalibration with an external reference
A forced recalibration supplies the instrument with a reference CO₂ concentration after it has equilibrated in a homogeneous, constant environment. For the cited SCD4x procedure, Sensirion specifies operating the sensor in its intended mode for at least three minutes, then entering an externally obtained reference concentration through the documented command sequence.
“Externally obtained” means a value from a suitable calibrated reference or controlled gas source, not a number guessed from an app, a nearby monitor or your own breath. A room with people moving, doors opening or uneven mixing is not a constant calibration environment. Do not use the SCD4x sequence on another product unless that product’s manual explicitly supports it.
Why temperature and humidity matter to CO₂ calibration
DOE calibration guidance explains that temperature affects nondispersive-infrared (NDIR) CO₂ accuracy, while humidity’s independent effect varies among sensor designs. Ideally, calibration accounts for multiple temperatures. A device that is accurate in a laboratory at one temperature can show a different error after being mounted over a heater or in a cold draft. This is a reason to correct the installation before attempting a software calibration.

- Do not enter 400 ppm simply because it is a commonly cited outdoor value.
- Do not calibrate while the inlet is exposed to exhaled breath, a gas plume or rapidly changing ventilation.
- Do not assume a high reading proves the sensor is wrong; occupied rooms can genuinely accumulate CO₂.
- Do not use a universal calendar interval. Follow the manufacturer’s stated conditions and service recommendations.
Check temperature and relative humidity
For temperature and humidity, a representative location is usually more important than a user-accessible “calibrate” button. First move the unit away from heat, sunlight, drafts and moisture sources, then let it stabilize. If the reading still appears wrong, compare it with a suitable reference instrument placed beside it under the same conditions.

Make a fair comparison
- Put the monitor and reference at the same height, separated enough that neither blocks the other’s airflow.
- Keep both away from your hands, windows, vents and appliances.
- Wait for both instruments to settle according to their manuals.
- Compare several readings over time rather than one display update.
- Record the difference and the environmental conditions.
Do not use an informal salt-container test, a boiling-water test or a guessed correction unless the manufacturer specifically documents that method for the sensor. The reviewed technical and public-health guidance does not establish one universal household humidity or temperature recalibration procedure, offset value or calibration interval.
Use an offset only when supported
If the device provides a temperature or relative-humidity offset, apply it only after the comparison above and only within the documented range. Some products allow user offsets; others require service or replacement. An offset that corrects a heater-induced error at one location can make the reading wrong after the monitor is moved, so reassess after any relocation.
Interpret CO₂, temperature and humidity readings responsibly
CO₂ is a ventilation indicator, not a safety verdict
People exhale CO₂, so its trend can reveal how occupancy and outdoor-air supply interact. The Health and Safety Executive describes CO₂ measurements as “only a broad guide to ventilation rather than demonstrating ‘safe levels.’” A rising value during a crowded, closed-window period suggests less dilution than during a well-ventilated period, but CO₂ alone does not measure every pollutant or establish an infection-risk threshold.

Know what the instrument cannot detect
Consumer monitors detect only the variables for which they are designed. A combined CO₂, temperature and humidity unit does not automatically measure particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, radon, carbon monoxide or smoke. The EPA cautions that consumer-monitor alerts are not designed to warn of immediate danger. Keep a certified carbon-monoxide alarm and smoke alarms; never substitute a CO₂ monitor for either.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot suspicious readings
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| CO₂ jumps when someone approaches | Exhaled breath reaches the inlet | Move the unit more than 50 cm from occupants and avoid breathing on it. |
| Temperature is higher than the room | Sunlight, electronics, a heater or restricted airflow | Relocate to an open shelf in the breathing zone and allow stabilization. |
| Humidity rises only near the monitor | Humidifier, shower steam, cooking plume or poor mixing | Move away from the source and compare with a reference at the same location. |
| CO₂ remains suspiciously low | Outdoor-air draft, automatic baseline assumption or calibration error | Check windows and vents, review ASC requirements and follow the model’s documented reference procedure. |
| Readings differ between rooms | Real differences in occupancy, ventilation or room volume | Compare locations using identical logging and ventilation notes before deciding that one unit is faulty. |
| Values change after moving the unit | New microclimate or insufficient settling time | Wait for the specified stabilization period and record the new position. |
Choosing a monitor for a home
If you are buying a device, treat it as a measurement tool rather than choosing by price or display features. The EPA notes that price alone does not establish monitor performance. Check the product documentation for:
- Explicit CO₂ sensing, rather than an estimate based only on volatile-organic-compound readings.
- Published accuracy, measurement range and operating-temperature and humidity limits.
- The sensor technology and whether calibration is automatic, manual, service-only or unavailable.
- Exact instructions for ASC, forced calibration, warm-up and stabilization.
- Placement restrictions, inlet clearance and whether the unit uses passive diffusion or a pump.
- Data logging or export, if you need to compare occupancy and ventilation over time.
- Independent alarms that can be configured without implying that a reading is a certified danger warning.
A documented module such as the Sensirion SCD4x can be useful for technically inclined builders because its manufacturer publishes calibration procedures, but its documentation does not make every finished home monitor equivalent. Evaluate the complete instrument, enclosure, firmware and instructions.

A practical operating routine
- Keep the monitor permanently in one representative occupied location unless you are deliberately mapping a room.
- Review daily or weekly trends with occupancy and ventilation notes.
- Inspect the vents for dust or obstruction and follow the cleaning instructions; never open the sensing chamber unless the manufacturer permits it.
- Recheck placement after adding a heater, humidifier, air cleaner, fan or furniture that changes airflow.
- Use a reference comparison when a temperature or humidity value seems implausible.
- Perform CO₂ recalibration only under the model’s specified conditions and with a documented external reference when required.
- Keep safety alarms separate: maintain certified smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms regardless of what the monitor displays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I calibrate a CO₂ monitor by taking it outside?
Only if the manufacturer explicitly uses outdoor-air exposure for that model and specifies the required duration and operating mode. The SCD4x documentation, for example, describes an automatic baseline assumption involving outdoor fresh air near 400 ppm for more than three minutes after an accumulated week of operation; that condition is not universal.
How far should a monitor be from a person?
More than 50 cm when possible, while keeping it in the room’s 3–6-foot breathing zone. This reduces direct exhaled-breath effects without placing the instrument on the floor or ceiling.
Does a CO₂ reading tell me whether indoor air is safe?
No. CO₂ is a broad ventilation indicator, not a complete indoor-air-quality measurement or a direct diagnosis of infection risk. Keep certified smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms installed.
Why does my humidity reading change after I move the unit?
The unit may have entered a different microclimate, such as a draft, sunlit area or humidifier plume, or it may not have stabilized. Compare it with a reference at the same location and follow the manufacturer’s settling guidance.
