On a Galaxy tablet, the taskbar’s app shortcuts come from the Home screen’s favorites bar. Add an app by dragging it from Home or Apps into that bar, change the order in the bar, and remove a shortcut by dragging it out or choosing Remove from its touch-and-hold menu. The taskbar can be enabled or disabled at Settings > Display > Taskbar.
How the Galaxy tablet taskbar works
Samsung does not maintain a separate app list just for the tablet taskbar. The shortcuts shown along the bottom are drawn from the Home screen favorites bar. Consequently, taskbar customization is performed on the Home screen: whatever apps occupy the favorites bar are the apps available in the taskbar.
Samsung’s support guide describes four taskbar app slots for Galaxy tablets. That limit is separate from Galaxy Z Fold phones, whose taskbar can include up to eight slots, including selected apps and recent apps. The Fold arrangement and its recent-app option do not apply to tablets. Before changing the shortcuts
- Use the tablet’s Home screen or Apps screen; no keyboard, stylus, accessory, or additional software is required.
- Make sure the app you want to add is installed and visible in Home or Apps.
- Remember that removing a shortcut from the favorites bar does not uninstall the app from the tablet. It only removes that shortcut from the taskbar source.
- Samsung’s screens and menu names can vary by model, installed software version, and service provider. If a control described below is missing, follow the Home screen and Display instructions for the exact tablet model.
How to pin an app to the taskbar
“Pinning” in this context means placing an app in the Home screen favorites bar so it appears in the taskbar.

- Go to the tablet’s Home screen. You can also open the Apps screen.
- Find the app you want to keep in the taskbar.
- Touch and hold the app, then drag it toward the favorites bar near the bottom of the Home screen.
- Release it in an available favorites-bar position. The shortcut now appears in the taskbar because the taskbar mirrors that bar.
If the bar is full, first remove a shortcut you no longer need or move an existing shortcut to another position. Galaxy tablets provide four taskbar app slots according to Samsung’s guide, so adding an app does not create unlimited space.
How to reorder taskbar apps
Reorder the apps in the Home screen favorites bar rather than trying to edit a separate taskbar panel.

- Return to the Home screen.
- Touch and hold the shortcut in the favorites bar.
- Drag it left or right to the desired position among the other favorites.
- Release it when the insertion position is correct, then check the taskbar to confirm the new sequence.
Samsung’s taskbar article explains that the favorites bar supplies the taskbar and documents adding and removing shortcuts, but it does not publish a separate, universal taskbar-reordering gesture. If dragging does not change the order on your tablet, use the model-specific Home screen instructions rather than assuming every Galaxy software version behaves identically. Verify that you are moving the icon in the favorites bar, not an unrelated Home screen icon.
How to remove an app shortcut
You have two Samsung-documented ways to remove a shortcut from the favorites bar and therefore from the taskbar.

Drag the shortcut out
- On the Home screen, touch and hold the app in the favorites bar.
- Drag it out of the favorites bar to another valid location on the Home screen, or to the removal area presented by your tablet.
- Release the icon. The app remains installed, but its taskbar shortcut is gone.
Use the Remove command
- Touch and hold the app shortcut in the favorites bar.
- When the pop-up menu appears, tap Remove.
- Confirm that the shortcut has disappeared from the favorites bar and taskbar.
Remove is not the same as Uninstall. The documented action removes the shortcut; open the Apps screen if you still want to launch the application.
How to turn the taskbar on or off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Taskbar.
- Use the switch at the top of the Taskbar screen to enable or disable it.
Samsung says the taskbar is on by default in the setup covered by its support guide. Turning it off hides the taskbar; it does not delete the apps from the favorites bar or uninstall them.

Troubleshooting when the taskbar does not change
The Taskbar entry is missing
Open Settings > Display and look for Taskbar. Samsung warns that available settings vary by device model and software version, so an older or differently configured tablet may not expose the same menu. Check the support instructions for the precise model and installed software instead of applying a Fold-phone procedure.
The app will not stay in the bar
Confirm that you released the icon inside the favorites bar and that an available slot exists. Tablets have four taskbar app slots in Samsung’s documented arrangement. If all four are occupied, remove or move one before adding another.

Reordering appears not to work
Perform the drag from the Home screen favorites bar, which is the source Samsung identifies for tablet taskbar shortcuts. Touch and hold until the icon can be moved, drag it clearly past the neighboring icon, and release only when the insertion position is visible. If the order still does not change, consult the Home screen guide for your tablet model and software version; Samsung’s taskbar article does not specify one reorder gesture that is guaranteed across all versions.
The shortcut disappeared but the app is still installed
That is expected after using Remove or dragging the icon out. Search for the app in the Apps screen to launch it, then drag it back into the favorites bar if you want it restored to the taskbar.
The taskbar itself is not visible
Check Settings > Display > Taskbar and turn on the switch. If the switch is already on but the interface differs, verify the tablet model and software version because Samsung notes that menus can vary.

Tablet versus Galaxy Z Fold instructions
Do not import Fold-phone advice into a tablet setup. Samsung describes Galaxy Z Fold models as supporting up to eight taskbar slots, with six selected apps and two recent apps. Galaxy tablets are listed with four app slots, and the recent-app option described for Fold models is unavailable on tablets. The steps in this guide are therefore for Galaxy tablets: manage the Home favorites bar and use the tablet’s own Taskbar setting.

Model and software caveat
Samsung’s US support page gives the Galaxy Tab S8, Tab S9, Tab S10, Tab S11, and Tab A11+ as examples of tablets with the taskbar. That list is not a promise that every Galaxy tablet exposes identical screens. Samsung also cautions that settings can differ by model, software version, and service provider. Use the labels currently shown on your device, and consult model-specific Home screen guidance when a gesture or menu is unavailable.
