Open Start, type the app’s name, then right-click (or press and hold) the result. Choose Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar, depending on where you want the shortcut. If the app is already running, right-click its taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar. These methods are built into Windows 11 and Windows 10; the wording and menu placement can vary slightly by build.

If the app does not appear in search, first verify that it is installed. Use Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11, then follow the troubleshooting paths below for Microsoft Store, Office, or hard-to-find installed programs.

Pin an installed app from Start search

Start search is the normal route for both traditional desktop programs and Microsoft Store apps. You do not need to create a shortcut manually when Windows can find the app.

  1. Open Start by selecting the Windows logo on the taskbar or pressing the Windows key.
  2. Type the app’s name. Wait for the matching result to appear in the search panel.
  3. Right-click the result. On a touchscreen, press and hold it until the context menu opens.
  4. Select Pin to Start to add it to the Start menu’s pinned area. If the menu offers Pin to taskbar, select that option to place the icon on the taskbar.

Microsoft’s taskbar guidance covers pinning from search in both Windows 11 and Windows 10. The available commands depend on the app type and Windows build, so you may see one pin command, both commands, or a More submenu. Use the labels Windows displays rather than assuming that every app exposes identical options. See Microsoft’s Customize the Taskbar in Windows instructions.

When the result opens instead of showing a menu

If a single click launches the app, close it and repeat the process with a right-click. You can also select the result with the arrow keys and open its context menu with Shift+F10, as described in Microsoft’s Start-menu accessibility guidance. The menu may place the pin command under More.

Pin an app that is already open

This is usually the fastest solution when search is awkward but the program is running.

  1. Launch the app normally.
  2. Find its icon on the taskbar. A running app may show an underline or highlight beneath the icon.
  3. Right-click the icon, or press and hold it on a touch device.
  4. Select Pin to taskbar. The icon remains on the taskbar after you close the app.

If the menu says Unpin from taskbar instead, the app is already pinned. Selecting that command removes the permanent shortcut but does not uninstall the program.

Use the keyboard to reach pin commands

Windows supports a keyboard-only route that is useful with a screen reader, without a mouse, or when the context menu is difficult to open.

  1. Press the Windows key to open Start.
  2. Use the arrow keys to move through the pinned list, or choose All apps and navigate to the program.
  3. With the app selected, press Shift+F10 to open its context menu.
  4. Choose Pin to Start, or choose More and then Pin to taskbar when that is how the command is presented.

Microsoft documents this navigation sequence in Use a screen reader to explore and navigate the Start menu. The exact order of items can change as Windows updates, but the keyboard context-menu key and Shift+F10 provide the same function.

Find an app through the Apps folder

Some installed programs are hard to locate in the Start list, especially when their displayed name differs from the name you remember. Windows provides a virtual folder containing installed applications.

  1. Press Windows key+R to open the Run dialog, or open File Explorer’s address bar.
  2. Enter shell:AppsFolder and press Enter.
  3. Browse the icons and identify the app.
  4. Right-click the app to inspect the available commands. If direct pinning is offered, choose the relevant pin option. Otherwise, use Create shortcut to place a desktop shortcut, then launch the app and pin its running taskbar icon.

Microsoft describes shell:AppsFolder as a way to browse installed apps and create a desktop shortcut when an app is difficult to locate in Start. See the keyboard and Apps-folder details in Microsoft’s Start-menu accessibility article.

What to do when Start search cannot find the app

A missing search result does not necessarily mean pinning is broken. Windows may not have the program installed, the app may use a different display name, or a product-specific access problem may be preventing it from appearing.

Confirm that the program is installed

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps in Windows 11. In some Windows 10 builds, the equivalent list is labeled Apps & features.
  4. Search or scroll through the installed-program list.

If the app is absent from the installed-apps list, Windows has nothing to pin. Reinstall it from the software publisher or the Microsoft Store, using the source appropriate for that app. Microsoft’s general procedure is documented in How to check if an app or program is installed in Windows.

Check the app’s actual name

Some programs install under a company or suite name rather than the name shown on a desktop shortcut, web page, or email. In Installed apps, note the exact listing, then search Start for that name. Also check All apps, where entries are grouped alphabetically.

Microsoft Store-specific checks

Store troubleshooting applies only when the missing item is a Microsoft Store app or when the Microsoft Store itself cannot be found. Microsoft says the Store may be unavailable when Windows is using a local account instead of a Microsoft account. A work-managed computer may also have the Store disabled by an administrator. Sign in with the appropriate Microsoft account if your organization permits it, and ask the device administrator whether Store access is allowed. These conditions do not explain every missing desktop program. The Store-specific guidance is at Microsoft’s Can’t find Microsoft Store app page.

Windows 10 Office exception

Microsoft documents one narrow visibility problem for Office applications on Windows 10: when All apps contains more than 512 apps, Office shortcuts may not appear in the app list or in search. The figure applies to the Office scenario described by Microsoft; it is not evidence that every type of Windows application disappears after 512 entries. If this matches your situation, open the Office program through another existing shortcut or its installation entry, then pin the running taskbar icon. Read the Office-specific explanation at Microsoft’s Can’t find Office applications in Windows 10? article.

Choose the right pin: Start menu or taskbar

Destination What it does Where to use the command
Pin to Start Adds the app to the pinned area of the Start menu. Right-click a Start-search result or an app in the Start menu and select Pin to Start.
Pin to taskbar Leaves an icon on the taskbar for one-click launching, even after the app is closed. Right-click a search result, choose More when necessary, or right-click the icon of an app that is already running.
Create shortcut Places a separate shortcut on the desktop; it is not the same as a Start or taskbar pin. Use the app’s context menu in shell:AppsFolder when a normal Start entry is difficult to locate.

You can use both pins for the same app. Removing a pin does not remove the installed program or its files.

Remove a pin later

Windows uses the same context-menu pattern for removal.

  1. For a Start pin, open Start, right-click the app, and choose Unpin from Start.
  2. For a taskbar pin, right-click the taskbar icon and choose Unpin from taskbar.

The unpin command only removes that shortcut location. To remove the software itself, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the program’s menu, and choose Uninstall when available.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely explanation Next action
The app appears in search but there is no pin command. The command may be nested under More, or that app type may expose a different context menu. Open the full context menu with a right-click or Shift+F10; inspect More; if the program is running, pin it from its taskbar icon.
The app is not in search or All apps. It may not be installed, or its registered display name may be different. Check Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then search using the exact listing.
The Microsoft Store itself is missing. A local-account sign-in or organization policy can affect Store availability. Check Microsoft-account status and ask the administrator about Store access; use the Store-specific Microsoft guidance.
An Office app is missing on Windows 10. Microsoft documents an Office-only issue when All apps contains more than 512 apps. Open Office through another shortcut or its installed entry and pin the running taskbar icon.
The icon disappears after closing the app. The app was launched but never permanently pinned. Reopen it, right-click its taskbar icon, and choose Pin to taskbar.
You can see a shortcut but it launches the wrong item. Several products may have similar names or multiple editions. Confirm the publisher and exact name in Installed apps before pinning the intended entry.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 support context

Microsoft’s taskbar instructions cover both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the pinning commands can still be useful on an existing Windows 10 installation, but security and feature support are no longer equivalent to a supported Windows release. Menu labels may differ by edition and build, so follow the command shown on the computer rather than relying on an older screenshot. The current taskbar documentation is available from Microsoft.

A reliable decision path

Use this order when you are unsure which method applies:

  1. Search Start. If the app appears, use its context menu to pin it.
  2. Check the taskbar. If the app is already open, pin its running icon.
  3. Verify installation. Look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps and search using the listed name.
  4. Open shell:AppsFolder. Browse the complete installed-apps view and create a desktop shortcut if needed.
  5. Apply product-specific checks. For Microsoft Store, review account and administrator access; for Office on Windows 10, consider the documented more-than-512-apps condition.

Once Windows exposes the app in any of these locations, pinning is a shortcut operation: choose the appropriate pin command, and use the matching unpin command if you later want to remove it.
