A foldable phone can use its outer cover display as a live viewfinder for the rear cameras, while the partially folded inner display can turn the handset into a self-supporting camera. The exact taps differ by model: Google Pixel Fold, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 do not share one universal gesture. Choose the instructions for your phone, then use a timer, hand gesture or Flex/tabletop position when you need hands-free framing.

What the cover and inner screens actually do

Most foldables give you two useful camera arrangements. First, the cover screen can show a preview while the rear cameras face you. This produces a rear-camera selfie or portrait without asking someone else to frame the shot. Second, a partly folded phone can stand on a table. One display may show the live image while the other presents controls, allowing a group photo, hands-free video or a steadier night exposure.

Those capabilities are related but not identical. A cover-screen rear-camera selfie depends on a camera mode that supports switching the preview to the outer display. A tabletop or Flex-mode setup depends on the hinge angle, the camera app and whether the phone can rest securely. A dual-preview option can show the scene on both displays, but manufacturer manuals limit it to selected shooting modes.

Do not assume that a gesture, menu name or lens choice from one foldable exists on another. The Pixel Fold, Galaxy Z Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 workflows below are model-specific.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Choose the right workflow

Workflow Best for What appears on screen Main limitation
Cover-screen rear-camera selfie Selfies and portraits using the rear cameras The outer display supplies framing while the rear cameras face you Activation differs by model, and some shooting modes do not support it
Tabletop or Flex mode Group photos, timer shots, hands-free video and steady night shots Preview and controls can occupy separate halves; some Pixel workflows use an outer-screen preview You need a stable surface and a fold angle supported by the specific phone and app
Dual preview Letting both the photographer and subject see framing The main and cover displays show the scene simultaneously The user guide says availability is limited to certain shooting modes
Folded cover-screen camera Quick photos or video without opening the main display A camera interface runs on the outer display Available cameras, modes and controls vary by device

Prepare the phone before you fold it

  • Identify the exact model and software version. Instructions for the original Pixel Fold are not interchangeable with Galaxy Z Fold6 or Galaxy Z Flip6 instructions.
  • Clean both camera lenses and the cover display. Smudges are especially visible when you use the outer screen to compose a rear-camera selfie.
  • Choose a hinge angle and surface that will not let the phone slide or tip. A smooth, uneven or vibrating surface can ruin a timer shot.
  • Decide whether you need the rear cameras, the inner camera or a cover-screen-only capture. The app may switch cameras when you change screens.
  • For people photos, select a three- or ten-second timer before you move into position. A timer gives you time to put the phone down and step into frame.
  • For long exposures, silence avoidable notifications and keep the phone untouched until the capture finishes.

Google Pixel Fold: use the outer display for a rear-camera selfie

Google’s Pixel Fold help instructions use a command called Switch screen. These steps describe the Pixel Fold workflow specifically, not a universal Android feature.

  1. Open Camera.
  2. Tap Switch screen. The camera display moves to the outer display and the rear camera becomes the camera pointed at your subject.
  3. If the phone is folded, unfold it so the outside screen and rear cameras face you. If it is already open, turn the phone so the rear cameras face you while you watch the outer display.
  4. Use the cover screen to position your face or the group. Check the edges of the frame because the outer display is smaller than the inner screen.
  5. Press the shutter. Hold the handset steady until the image is recorded.

This arrangement uses the rear camera system while keeping a live view visible to the person holding the phone. It is useful when you want the rear cameras’ framing rather than the inner camera’s normal selfie view, but the available lens and shooting mode still depend on what the Camera app permits after switching screens.

Pixel Fold: make a hands-free group photo on a table

A Pixel Fold can use its hinge as a stand. Google’s wording is: “Fold your phone into an L shape (or tabletop mode).” Set the phone down with the rear cameras facing the people who will be photographed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Camera.
  2. Fold the phone into an L shape and place it on a stable, level surface. Aim the rear cameras toward the group.
  3. Confirm that the outside screen shows the photo preview. Adjust the hinge angle or the phone’s position until everyone is inside the frame.
  4. Select the three-second or ten-second timer.
  5. Press the shutter, move into position and remain still when the countdown ends.
  6. If your Pixel Fold shows the hand-trigger option, raise a hand after the timer is selected. Google documents a raised-hand gesture that can trigger the shutter, so you do not have to reach back to the phone.

A timer is still the safer choice when lighting is low or the group is large. Keep the phone where the hinge cannot be bumped, and leave enough clearance that clothing or a bag does not cover a lens.

Do not confuse tabletop camera mode with the rear-camera group setup

Google also documents a separate tabletop camera mode. In that orientation, place the Pixel Fold with the outer screen down and use the Flip Camera button. The upper portion then shows the camera view and the lower portion shows controls. Google’s description for this arrangement refers to using the inner camera, so it is distinct from the rear-camera group-photo procedure above. If you need the rear cameras aimed at the group, use the rear-camera tabletop steps rather than assuming that the tabletop layout has changed lenses automatically.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Pixel Fold: astrophotography and other long exposures

The foldable shape is useful for astrophotography because it can support the phone without a separate mount, but stability matters more than the hinge.

  1. Go to a dark location with a clear view of the sky.
  2. Open Camera and unfold the phone into an L shape.
  3. Set it on a steady surface. Google also allows a suitable stand, but the phone must not rock or slide.
  4. Wait for the message Astrophotography on. If it does not appear, select Night Sight and move the slider to Astro.
  5. Press the shutter and keep the phone completely still while the countdown and exposure run.

Do not pick up the phone to check the result during capture. A small movement can soften stars and foreground details. The same stability rule applies to any night scene that uses a long exposure, even when you are not using the Astro setting.

Galaxy Z Fold6: rear-camera self-portrait and dual preview

Rear-camera self-portrait with the cover preview

The Galaxy Z Fold6 starts this workflow from the cover screen rather than from an inner-screen “switch screen” command.

  1. Open Camera on the cover screen.
  2. Tap SELFIE.
  3. Unfold the device and face the rear camera. The cover screen supplies the preview so you can frame yourself.
  4. Adjust your position and press the shutter.

The Fold6 manual qualifies this feature as available only in some shooting modes. If the SELFIE option or cover preview does not appear, change to a supported mode rather than assuming the phone is malfunctioning. The manual also does not guarantee that every rear lens, resolution or effect remains available in this arrangement.

Show the scene on both displays

  1. Open the camera preview screen.
  2. Tap the dual-preview control.
  3. Check that the scene appears on both the main and cover displays.
  4. Take the photo or start recording video.

Dual preview is mode-dependent according to Samsung’s user guide. It is useful when a subject needs to see the framing, but it is not a promise that every camera mode will offer two simultaneous previews.

Use Fold6 Flex mode

When you partially fold the Fold6, the camera layout can adapt automatically. The phone can rest on a surface, with the preview and controls arranged for the new angle. Samsung’s manual says photos and video can be taken with the cover screen while the device is folded or unfolded, and results can be viewed on the preview screen. The exact layout can change with the selected mode.

Galaxy Z Flip6: capture from the folded cover screen

  1. Wake the cover screen.
  2. Swipe outside the large circle to open Camera, or double-press the Side button.
  3. Swipe to choose a shooting mode.
  4. Use a pinch gesture to zoom if that control is available in the selected mode.
  5. Tap the cover screen to capture the image. Samsung’s manual also lists the volume button and palm gestures as capture alternatives.

The Flip6 can show the scene on both displays by tapping the preview-screen control, but Samsung notes that support depends on the shooting mode. Because the cover display is small, check the corners of the composition before you press the shutter, especially when photographing more than one person.

Set up Samsung Flex mode where it is supported

Samsung’s US support instructions place the Flex mode setting at Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel. Enable the panel, then choose which supported apps should display it. Samsung lists Camera among the apps that can be used while the phone is folded.

Flex mode is not universal across the Galaxy foldable range. Samsung’s current support page explicitly excludes the original Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z TriFold from Flex mode. Menu names and supported apps can also differ by model and region, so a missing Flex panel is not necessarily a camera fault.

That design principle explains why the inner screen can become a control surface while the phone remains upright. It does not mean every third-party camera app will provide the same split layout; Flex behavior depends on app support.

Using the inner screen without losing the shot

Frame on the large display, then move to the cover display

The inner screen is valuable for arranging a group, checking background edges and reading camera controls. Once the composition is correct, you can close or partially fold the device only if the selected camera mode preserves the preview. Watch for a change in orientation or camera selection after folding, and recheck the frame before starting the timer.

Keep controls on the lower half in a tabletop position

In a supported Flex or tabletop layout, put the camera controls on the half that is easiest to reach and keep the preview unobstructed on the other half. This reduces the temptation to touch the phone near the lens or to pick it up after the countdown has started.

Let the subject see framing when appropriate

Dual preview is useful for portraits, demonstrations and video because the person in front of the phone can adjust position without verbal directions. Activate it only after choosing a mode that supports the control. If the option is absent, use the cover-screen preview or take a test frame and reposition the phone.

Hands-free capture: timers, gestures and physical buttons

  • Timer: A three-second delay is usually enough for a quick pose; ten seconds gives a group more time to move into place. Select the delay before pressing the shutter.
  • Hand gesture: On Pixel Fold, Google documents raising a hand after a timer is selected as a shutter trigger. Lighting and distance can affect recognition, so keep the hand visible and use the timer as a fallback.
  • Palm gesture: Samsung’s Flip6 manual lists a palm gesture as an alternative capture method.
  • Volume button: On the Flip6, the volume button can trigger capture when reaching for the screen would disturb the phone.

Gesture controls are convenience features, not substitutes for a stable setup. If a gesture fails, avoid repeatedly waving near the lens; use the physical button or timer instead.

When a phone tripod stand is useful

The hinge can support many shots, but it cannot compensate for a narrow ledge, soft surface or angle that makes the phone slide. A phone tripod stand or adjustable phone stand is optional for hands-free capture, not mandatory. Choose one rated for the device’s size and weight and verify that it can hold the angle needed for the cover or inner display. A stand is particularly useful outdoors, on uneven furniture or when a long exposure must remain motionless.

Troubleshoot a missing preview or failed capture

The cover screen stays blank

  • Confirm that the camera app is open on the cover display, not only on the inner display.
  • On Pixel Fold, look for Switch screen. On Fold6, begin on the cover screen and select SELFIE.
  • Change shooting modes. Samsung manuals limit rear-camera preview and dual preview to certain modes.
  • Close and reopen Camera if the display did not update after folding.

The phone changes cameras after folding

Folding can invoke a different camera layout or camera selection. Check the lens indicator and the preview before pressing the shutter. On Pixel Fold, the documented tabletop camera mode using the inner camera is different from the rear-camera group setup, so select the workflow that matches the camera you intend to use.

The image is blurred

  • Put the phone on a firmer surface or use a stand.
  • Increase the timer delay so touching the shutter does not shake the handset.
  • Do not move the device during Night Sight or astrophotography capture.
  • Recheck that a case, finger or hinge edge is not partly covering a lens.

Flex controls do not appear

Open Settings > Advanced features > Flex mode panel on supported Samsung models and confirm that Camera is enabled. If your model is the original Galaxy Z Fold or Galaxy Z TriFold, Samsung’s support page says Flex mode is excluded. For other phones, app support and terminology can vary by software version and region.

Feature availability across Pixel generations

Google’s help material identifies generation-specific features rather than a single Pixel Fold feature set. It says Made You Look is available on Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, while Instant View is available on Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Those names should not be treated as features of the original Pixel Fold unless your phone’s software explicitly provides them. Core camera behavior, such as the documented Pixel Fold screen-switch and tabletop workflows, should still be checked against your exact model and current software.

A practical decision guide

  1. You are holding the phone for a selfie: Use the model’s cover-screen rear-camera workflow. Pixel Fold uses Switch screen; Fold6 starts with Camera > SELFIE on the cover screen.
  2. You need everyone in a group photo: Fold the phone into an L or tabletop position, aim the appropriate camera at the group, select a timer and move into frame.
  3. You want the subject to monitor framing: Try dual preview, provided the current shooting mode supports it.
  4. You need a steady night or sky exposure: Use an L-shaped support on a stable surface, start the exposure and do not touch the phone until it completes.
  5. The phone cannot hold the required angle: Add a compatible adjustable stand rather than balancing the device against an unstable object.

The best setup is the one that keeps the intended camera pointed at the subject, leaves a visible preview on the screen you can see, and prevents movement during capture. Because foldable camera features are model- and mode-dependent, verify those three conditions before you step away from the phone.
