Photograph wallpaper with one straight-on image that shows the pattern clearly, then add separate close-up and room-context views. Keep lighting and white balance consistent, avoid edits that change the color, and state the pattern repeat, match type, colorway, and finish in the listing. A photo helps shoppers assess the design, but it cannot guarantee the same appearance in every room or on every screen.
Build an image set around what shoppers need to see
Different views answer different questions. A tight crop may show print detail but hide how the design repeats, while a styled room image conveys scale without reliably showing the paper’s actual color or surface.

- Choose a representative, clean sample. Lay it flat, with the design unobstructed and no folds hiding important parts. Remove distracting objects from around it. Preserve the natural surface rather than stretching or flattening texture out of view.
- Make the camera square to the sample. Position the camera so its sensor is parallel to the flat paper. This practical alignment reduces perspective distortion that can make motifs look skewed. Keep the whole relevant sample in frame and focus on the printed surface.
- Show enough pattern. Include a complete motif or repeat when the sample permits. Wallpaper repeat is the vertical distance from a point in the design to the next identical point; a small isolated motif may not communicate the layout. The Wallcoverings Association notes that most wallpapers, except some textures and murals, have a pattern repeat (Wallcoverings Association).
- Take separate detail and context views. Make a close-up for finish and a room image for scale if useful. Do not rely on the room image to show color precisely: lighting and surrounding surfaces affect appearance.
- Use a steady setup. A phone or camera can work if it can hold focus and detail, stay steady, and produce repeatable color. The available guidance does not establish a required camera type or universal camera angle for listing photos.
Keep color and lighting consistent
Use one lighting setup across all images in a colorway or across related colorways. Avoid combining window daylight with household lamps of a different color, which can cast competing tints. A neutral gray card photographed under the same illumination can provide a white-balance reference in the camera or editing software (Adobe’s gray-card guidance).

A gray card is a reference for white balance, not a screen-calibration system. It can help you make related photographs more consistent; it cannot make every monitor or room display the paper identically.
Edit without changing the wallpaper
- Keep an untouched original before editing.
- Apply restrained, consistent white-balance and exposure corrections across related images.
- Avoid color adjustments that make the wallpaper look like a different colorway, and avoid edits that erase texture or sheen.
- Inspect the exported file to confirm that the sample remains in focus and that the result still represents the paper you photographed.
Wallpaper appearance changes with lighting and display conditions. A Kelly Wearstler wallpaper specification sheet gives this qualification: “This image is for illustrative purposes only. The colors shown are accurate within the constraints of lighting, photography and the color accuracy of your monitor.” Use a similarly restrained note where appropriate rather than promising identical color in every setting.

Give the listing the pattern information a photo cannot
State the colorway and finish, and include the pattern repeat and match type when known. The Wallcoverings Association explains that a pattern number identifies a design and colorway; a dye-lot or run number refers to rolls from the same print run, and different run numbers can indicate tonal or manufacturing variation (Wallcoverings Association).
Match type matters because the same motif can align differently from panel to panel. Spoonflower explains that straight-drop wallpaper aligns adjacent rolls at the same level, while a half-drop design offsets every other panel by half the vertical repeat (Spoonflower wallpaper terms). Do not expect a small crop to communicate those installation details by itself.

If you are evaluating a sample before listing it, observe it in the intended room under changing daylight and evening lighting, and check its dimensions and texture. That is practical sample-assessment guidance, not a guarantee that an online photo can reproduce every room condition (Spoonflower wallpaper terms).
Check marketplace image rules before upload
Image requirements vary by marketplace and category. An older Amazon guide for the lighting category calls for color images, the complete product, a simple clean background—ideally pure white—and only items included in the offer (Amazon lighting category guide). It is not a wallpaper-specific specification or a current universal rule. Check the live requirements for the marketplace and wallpaper category where you are listing; do not assume a particular pixel size, crop, or required image sequence applies everywhere.
