You can photograph stars with an iPhone by keeping it completely still, using Night mode when your model supports it, and checking a test shot before making adjustments. A tripod helps, but a steady rock or other firm support can work too. The controls and exposure options vary by iPhone, so there is no single setting that guarantees a good result.
Set up a stable shot
Low-light photos are especially vulnerable to movement. Rest your iPhone on a small tripod or another solid surface, such as a rock or block of wood. NASA recommends an improvised support when a tripod is unavailable, while Apple says a tripod can help produce more detailed Night mode photos.
Frame the sky before taking the picture. If you are using an improvised support, make sure the phone cannot slide or tip during the exposure.

Use Night mode and reduce shutter movement
On supported iPhone models, Night mode turns on automatically in low light. Apple’s iPhone guide says you can open Camera Controls, choose Night Mode, and select from the exposure options available on your device. The selection is saved for the next Night mode photo. These options are model-dependent; Apple does not specify one exposure duration that applies to every iPhone.

Keep the phone still while the photo is being taken. Apple says the Camera app may show crosshairs if it detects movement. A timer, when available, can reduce the vibration caused by tapping the shutter; NASA notes that many camera apps offer a short delay.
Focus, test, and adjust
Try a distant point of light
Where the camera app allows it, tap a distant bright star or a faraway light to set focus. NASA recommends checking whether your app can fine-tune and lock focus. The controls and focus behavior can differ by iPhone, camera mode, and app, so use the options actually shown on your screen.

Take a test photo
Review an initial shot rather than assuming a particular exposure will work. NASA suggests starting with an exposure of a few seconds where the camera permits it, then taking a test photo. Apple’s guide offers device-specific exposure choices rather than a universal time.

Choose the simplest camera setup that meets your needs

NASA advises trying the phone and practicing before deciding whether to buy equipment. No particular tripod model is necessary for this workflow.
Consider a specialist app only for extra controls
A third-party app is optional; the built-in Camera app is enough to try Night mode on a supported iPhone. The US App Store listing for NightCap Camera: Long Exposure describes Stars, Star Trails, Meteors, and ISS modes, along with manual exposure, ISO, focus, and white-balance controls. The listing displayed version 10.1.1 when inspected; features and availability can change. These options may suit someone who wants specialized modes, but they are not required for an ordinary Night mode photo.

Review the image and process it sparingly
After the capture, check whether the stars are sharp and the composition is usable. NASA describes post-processing as an important part of astrophotography and says processing can reveal additional detail. Editing is optional; results depend on the original image, and aggressive adjustments can make a night sky look unnatural.
