You can photograph the aurora with a Galaxy S22 using Expert RAW’s astrophotography option on supported software, or try the regular Camera app’s night-related features for a simpler approach. For either method, stabilize the phone, make a series of test shots, and adjust exposure to the aurora’s brightness and movement: there is no single setting that works for every display.
Check whether your S22 has Expert RAW astrophotography
Samsung documents astrophotography and multiple exposure for Galaxy S22 series devices running the specified software, through Expert RAW’s Special photo options. Samsung’s support information identifies S22 support on T OS software. Feature visibility can depend on the phone’s software and app state, so check your own device rather than assuming the option is present.
- Install or open Expert RAW. Samsung says the app is downloadable from Galaxy Store and is available on Galaxy S20 or later.
- In Expert RAW, look for Special photo options and check whether astrophotography is available.
- Set the camera resolution to 12MP. Samsung says the special options activate only at that resolution.
- If the option is missing, confirm that the phone and app are up to date and check the resolution setting. Availability is software-specific; the option’s absence does not establish that every S22 lacks support.
When astrophotography mode is available, Samsung documents adjustable focus, white balance, and exposure time, as well as a Sky Guide option. Expert RAW also provides controls for ISO, shutter speed, white balance, exposure, and focus.

Stabilize the phone before choosing settings
Long exposures magnify small movements. Samsung recommends a sturdy tripod for S22 nightscape photography, and NASA’s smartphone astrophotography guidance likewise says a tripod or another means of stabilization is needed for long exposures. Use a tripod with a compatible phone clamp, or place the phone on another firm, stable support.

- Set the phone so it cannot shift during the exposure.
- If tapping the shutter moves the phone, use a timer or remote trigger.
- Compose a wide view with some foreground, such as a landscape silhouette, to give the lights context. This is a composition choice, not an S22-specific camera feature.
Choose an exposure for the aurora you see
There is no established universal ISO and shutter-speed combination for the S22. The right exposure depends on the available light and how quickly the aurora is changing. A longer exposure gathers more light, but it can blur moving structure. A shorter exposure records motion more crisply, but may leave a dim display too dark.
Make a short sequence of test frames rather than committing to one preset. Use the resulting images to decide what to change next:

- Exposure time: Try a shorter capture if moving curtains or rays look smeared. If the scene is too dark, try a longer one, watching for motion blur.
- ISO: Adjust it alongside exposure time when the image is too dark or bright. The available sources do not establish a best ISO value for every S22 aurora photograph.
- Focus: Set and check focus before capturing a sequence; Expert RAW’s astrophotography mode allows focus adjustment.
- White balance: Adjust it if the displayed colors do not look right to you. Expert RAW provides white-balance control.
Compare each frame on the phone and change one or two controls at a time. That makes it easier to see whether a change helped with brightness, color, focus, or motion blur.
Decide between Expert RAW and the regular Camera app
The choice is mainly about convenience versus control, not a guaranteed difference in image quality. Expert RAW is the documented route to astrophotography mode on supported S22 software and gives you more manual adjustments. The regular Camera app may be more straightforward, but its Night Portrait feature is a portrait feature—not an aurora-specific mode. Samsung advises keeping the phone steady during Night Portrait capture.

Choose JPEG, RAW, or both for editing
Expert RAW saves a JPEG and a Linear DNG 16-bit RAW file. The JPEG is convenient to view and share. The RAW file retains more data for later editing, so it offers more latitude for adjustments, but you will need to process it to make use of that flexibility. Capture RAW if you expect to edit the image; choose JPEG for a ready-to-use file, or keep both when you want convenience and an editable original.

NASA describes aurora photographs made from the northern shore of Great Slave Lake in Canada on March 20, 2020, at 11:30 p.m. local time. The photographs used a Samsung Note 8, the native Pro mode, a 10-second exposure, ISO 800, and a tripod. That example illustrates one documented phone capture; it is not an S22 test or a recommended S22 preset. Different phones, sky conditions, and aurora motion can call for different exposure choices.
