You can produce trustworthy online-store product photos with a smartphone, a table beside a window, white poster board, and a sheet of white paper or foam board. Start with that free or low-cost setup, then buy only the accessory that fixes a visible problem—usually a tripod for consistency or a controllable light for difficult shadows. A new camera, studio kit, lightbox, or paid editing subscription is not a prerequisite.
The goal is not dramatic art photography. It is a repeatable set of images that shows exactly what a shopper will receive, with accurate color, useful detail, and enough context to answer questions before purchase.
What you need for a budget product-photo setup
Begin with equipment you already own. Shopify Help advises taking product photos with “the best camera that you have available,” whether that is a smartphone, point-and-shoot camera, or DSLR. Its guidance is available at Taking product photographs. For many small stores, a recent phone is the fastest way to get clear, high-resolution images without learning a separate camera system.

Clean the lens, charge the battery, and use the camera’s normal photo mode rather than an extreme wide-angle or portrait effect. The main camera usually gives a more natural perspective than a front-facing camera. Tap the product to set focus, check the edges for blur, and avoid digital zoom; move the phone closer instead. Keep the same camera and lens for a product batch so color and perspective do not change from item to item.

Do not upgrade merely because dedicated cameras sound more professional. Consider a camera purchase only after you can identify a repeatable shortcoming—such as insufficient detail in large products, unreliable focus, or a need for interchangeable lenses—that your current phone cannot solve.
Surface and backdrop
Use a stable table or counter near a large window. White poster board or heavy paper can create a clean background. For a curved “sweep,” place one sheet on the table and let another sheet rise behind it without a visible corner; secure it with tape or clips outside the frame. A roll of seamless paper is more convenient when you photograph many products because you can roll down a clean section after the current area becomes marked, but it is an optional purchase.
Light and a DIY reflector
Window light is the lowest-cost source. A white foam board, spare poster board, or even clean white paper placed opposite the window bounces light into the shadow side. This reflector does not create light; it redirects some of the window light, softening contrast without adding a lamp.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The starter kit is therefore:
- A smartphone or other camera already on hand
- A stable table or surface
- White poster board or paper for the background
- White paper or foam board for a reflector
- Tape, clips, or a stand to keep the background and reflector steady
These materials let you test the workflow before spending money.
Build the set in a repeatable sequence
- Choose the window. Select the brightest window with enough room for the table. Turn off mixed-color room lights if they make the product look warmer or cooler on one side.
- Place the table. Set the product a short distance from the window rather than directly against the glass. Leave space behind the item for the paper sweep and space beside it for the reflector.
- Install the backdrop. Make the paper clean, wrinkle-free, and large enough that the camera cannot see the table edge, wall, or unrelated objects. Replace or turn the sheet when it becomes dirty.
- Position the product. Remove dust, fingerprints, price stickers, and temporary packaging unless the packaging is part of what the customer receives. Align labels and important features deliberately.
- Start with the reflector away from the product. Take a test frame, then move the white board closer until the shadow side has detail without losing the direction of the light.
- Set the phone position. Hold the camera level with the product for a natural front view. Raise it slightly for objects whose top surface matters, or lower it for a more imposing view. Mark the table and phone position with removable tape when shooting a batch.
- Lock the composition. Use the same distance, angle, background, and amount of empty space for every item in the collection. A small tripod can make this easier, but it is not mandatory in bright window light.
- Capture a test and inspect it at full size. Check focus on the most important detail, highlights on reflective surfaces, shadow detail, color, and unwanted background marks before photographing the entire inventory.
Control window light, shadows, and reflections
When sunlight is too harsh
Direct sun can create hard-edged shadows and bright patches that hide texture. Move the table farther from the window, photograph when the sun is less direct, or diffuse the window with a translucent curtain or other safe diffuser that does not touch a hot lamp. Keep the diffuser outside the frame and make sure it cannot fall onto the product.

A white bounce card on the shadow side can lift dark areas. Move it incrementally: too close can flatten the product and remove the sense of shape, while too far may leave important details unreadable.
Reflective, glossy, and transparent products
Glossy packaging, glass, metal, and polished surfaces record the room around them. First remove bright clutter from the room and your clothing from the reflection. Then change the angle of the product or phone slightly so a bright window is not reflected as a white patch over a label. A larger sheet of white board can create a broad, soft reflection that follows the product’s shape more naturally than a small card.
Recommended Free Tools
Transparent items often need a visible edge against the background. A clean white background can make clear glass disappear, so try a modest change in angle or a darker card outside the frame while keeping the product itself accurately represented. Photographing a colored liquid or translucent material requires particular care: do not alter its color in editing to compensate for an unsuitable background.
Using artificial lights when the window is not enough
Artificial lighting is useful when daylight is inconsistent, the product is too large for the window setup, or you need to photograph on a schedule. Amazon’s seller guidance describes using one or more lights and recording their positions so a batch can be repeated. Treat that as a method, not a universal arrangement: product size, surface reflectivity, and the style you want determine whether one broad source, two sources, or a source plus reflector works best.
When you change a lamp’s height, distance, or angle, note the change and retake a reference frame. Consistent positions matter more than owning several lights. Never mix household bulbs of different color temperatures with daylight unless you deliberately want that effect and can keep it consistent.

Use a tripod only when it solves a problem
A tripod keeps framing stable and makes a multi-item session faster. It is especially helpful when you use manual camera controls, a small aperture, low light, or a slower shutter speed, because hand movement can soften the image. It also preserves the same angle when you replace one product with another.

In bright window light, a phone can often produce a sharp frame handheld. If your test shots are sharp and your composition is easy to repeat, skip the tripod. If images vary in height, tilt, or sharpness, a phone tripod for product photography is a sensible first accessory. Choose a mount that holds the phone securely and can be adjusted to the viewing angle you actually use; an expensive camera tripod is unnecessary for a phone-only workflow.
Photograph more than one view
One clean hero image rarely answers every buying question. Plan a small set in which each frame has a job. Keep the background and color treatment consistent, but change the view when it reveals useful information.
| Image style | What it answers | How to shoot it on a budget |
|---|---|---|
| Plain-background product view | What the item looks like without distractions | Use the paper sweep, even window light, and a level camera. Make this the clearest general view. |
| Lifestyle or context view | How the product is used, worn, held, or sized in a real setting | Use a tidy location and natural light. Include only context that helps explain use; do not let props hide the product. |
| Packaging view | What arrives in the shipment and how it is presented | Show the actual box, inserts, labels, and included accessories. Keep the arrangement truthful to the delivered package. |
| Close-up or detail view | Texture, finish, controls, stitching, connectors, or other construction details | Move the phone closer, refocus, and check sharpness at full size. Do not use digital zoom to create detail that is not captured. |
| Group or variation view | Available colors, sizes, components, or a set of multiple items | Arrange every included piece clearly and label variations in the listing text. Avoid making separate items look included when they are sold separately. |
Use angles that address likely questions: What is included? How large is it relative to a familiar object? Where are the ports, closures, seams, or controls? Which surface is glossy or textured? A close-up should reveal a real feature, not merely repeat the hero image at a larger crop.
Camera technique for consistent results
Focus and exposure
Tap the product’s most important area to focus. On a phone, press and hold when available to lock focus and exposure while you recompose. Watch bright highlights on white products and dark areas on black products; an automatic exposure can favor the background instead of the item. Make small exposure adjustments and compare a test frame before continuing.

Perspective and framing
Keep the phone parallel to a flat front face when you need straight edges. Tilting it up or down can make a rectangular package look distorted. For a three-quarter view, move the product rather than relying on a dramatic wide-angle setting. Leave enough margin to crop consistently later, but do not place the product so small that important details disappear.
Color and white balance
Use one light source where possible and keep the same source throughout a batch. A white card in the first frame can help you notice a color cast; remove it for the final image. Compare the screen image with the physical item under neutral room light. If the product’s color is central to the purchase decision, describe any unavoidable finish or lighting variation in the listing rather than correcting it away.
Edit lightly and preserve trust
Editing should remove distractions introduced by the shoot, not change the product. Review each image for focus, exposure, color cast, crooked framing, dust, and background marks. Shopify Help gives lightening a background as an example of a retouching task and notes that third-party apps or Shopify Partners can assist; the specific tool is less important than the result being accurate.
Safe adjustments generally include:
- Correcting a slight tilt or cropping excess empty space
- Balancing exposure so the product is visible without clipped highlights
- Removing a temporary speck on the backdrop or sensor dust
- Making a background more evenly white when the product edges remain intact
- Applying the same restrained correction to every image in a product set
Do not recolor an item, smooth away meaningful texture, enlarge it beyond its real proportions, remove scratches that buyers will receive, or erase an included component. Do not add shadows, reflections, or accessories that suggest something comes with the purchase when it does not. Keep an untouched original file so you can review or redo an edit later.

Choose purchases by the problem they fix
| Option | Use it when | Budget-first alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Phone tripod | Handheld frames vary, the light is low, or you need identical angles across a batch | Brace the phone against a stable object for a one-off session, then buy a tripod only if inconsistency remains. |
| Seamless paper background | You photograph many products and dirty backdrops slow you down | Use poster board or paper and replace, flip, or roll it when marked. |
| Foam board reflector | A small paper card moves or does not bounce enough light | Tape white paper or poster board to cardboard and position it outside the frame. |
| Small product lightbox | Products are small, window light is unreliable, and you want a contained setup | Use a window, paper sweep, and reflector first. A lightbox is not necessary for every product or style. |
| Artificial light | You need repeatable timing or more control than daylight provides | Schedule batches near the same window at a consistent time and diffuse harsh sun. |
| Paid editing software | Your volume or retouching needs exceed the basic editor you already have | Start with the phone’s editor or another basic tool; verify that any changes remain truthful. |
Prices, stock, and subscription terms vary by seller and region, so compare the accessory’s actual benefit to the problem seen in your test images rather than buying a complete studio kit.

A practical batch workflow
- Prepare inventory. Group products by size, color, and finish. Clean each item and confirm which accessories belong in the package.
- Record a reference frame. Photograph a white card or one approved sample under the final lighting. Keep it with the session files so you can spot a color or exposure shift.
- Shoot the plain-background view first. Keep the camera, product position, and reflector marks fixed. Replace only the item.
- Capture required detail views. Photograph packaging, close-ups, variations, and a useful context image where each one answers a different shopper question.
- Inspect before dismantling. Zoom into focus, edges, labels, and reflections. Reshoot while the set is still assembled.
- Edit and name consistently. Use a predictable filename that identifies the product and view. Keep originals separate from edited exports.
- Review the listing as a buyer. Check that the sequence explains what is included, that color and scale are not misleading, and that every image belongs to the same product or clearly labeled variation.
Troubleshoot common failures
The background looks gray or uneven
Move the product farther from the background, increase the light on the background only if you can do so without changing product color, or adjust exposure carefully. A white surface photographed in shadow can look gray; whitening it in editing is acceptable only when the product edges and color remain accurate.
The product is sharp in one area and blurry elsewhere
Increase the distance slightly, keep the phone level, and tap the most important plane to focus. Use a tripod if movement is the cause. For a very deep object, take additional angles rather than pretending one shallow-focus frame shows every feature clearly.
Shadows are too dark
Bring the white reflector closer to the shadow side, rotate the product toward the window, or diffuse the incoming light. Do not brighten shadows until they become a flat, textureless patch.
There is glare on a label or screen
Change the phone or product angle so the window is not reflected directly toward the lens. Increase the size of the white card to create a broad reflection, and remove bright objects from the room. Recheck that text remains legible.
Images from one batch do not match
Compare window direction, time of day, phone lens, camera height, white balance, background, and reflector distance. Recreate the reference setup and reshoot the outliers. A tripod and tape marks help prevent the problem on the next batch.
Check requirements before publishing
Storefronts and marketplaces can impose different rules for background, file format, cropping, image count, or category-specific content. The available guidance does not establish universal dimensions or file-size limits. Check the current requirements for the exact channel and category before exporting, because those rules can change.
Regardless of channel, verify that the first image is easy to understand at thumbnail size, that subsequent images add information, that the item is centered and sharply focused, and that the photos show the exact product and included parts. Keep a record of the setup that produced an approved batch so the next session can match it.
Quick Recap
Budget checklist
- Use the best camera already available, starting with a smartphone.
- Work on a stable table near a window.
- Form a clean sweep with white poster board or paper.
- Bounce light with a white sheet or foam board.
- Diffuse direct sun when highlights and shadows are harsh.
- Buy a tripod only if movement or inconsistent framing is visible.
- Use a paper sweep, artificial light, or small lightbox only when a specific workflow problem justifies it.
- Capture plain-background, context, packaging, close-up, and group views when they answer different buyer questions.
- Edit exposure and background distractions conservatively; never alter facts about the item.
- Inspect full-size originals before taking down the set and verify current marketplace rules before upload.
