Record the surroundings as carefully as the object. Start promptly, keep an unedited original, note your location and viewing direction, and preserve the device’s metadata. A tighter, higher-resolution view may reveal detail, but it cannot by itself prove an object’s distance, size, speed or identity.

“UFO” or “UAP” means that the observer has not identified what was seen. A photograph or clip documents light reaching a sensor; it does not automatically establish an extraordinary explanation. The most useful recording is one that another person can place in time and space, inspect in its original form, and compare with independent observations.

What to do in the first seconds

Safety and situational awareness come before filming. Do not step into traffic, approach an unsafe area, abandon a duty or stare at a screen when you need to monitor aircraft, vehicles, people or weather. If it is safe to record, use the device already in your hand rather than losing the event while searching for special equipment.

  1. Start recording immediately. Let the opening seconds show some of the scene before you tighten the framing. A continuous original can preserve movement and timing that a later excerpt removes.
  2. Keep a wide view when practical. Include the horizon, buildings, trees, roads, clouds or other fixed references. A wider clip helps establish where the observer was and how the apparent motion relates to the surroundings.
  3. Follow the object without frantic movements. Keep your arms and the phone as steady as conditions allow. If you change zoom, lens or camera mode, say so aloud or write it down afterward.
  4. Do not sacrifice the only useful view. If the object is already near the edge of the frame, changing to a different camera or aggressive zoom can make you lose it. A closer view is optional; preserving a contextual recording is more important.
  5. Capture a still only when it will not interrupt the video. A single frame can be useful, but stopping a continuous recording to take a photograph may remove timing and motion information.

These steps are practical ways to preserve context. They are not a guarantee that a phone can identify an object. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) says higher-resolution video and a smaller field of view can be useful, particularly when an object is close, while also warning that a tight or zoomed image alone does not establish distance or size.

Keep context as well as detail

Make the surroundings visible

Begin with enough of the scene to answer basic questions: What was above or below the object? Was it near a roofline, mountain, tower, streetlight or cloud layer? Did the camera pan, tilt or rotate? A short segment that contains only a bright point is harder to distinguish from a lens flare, aircraft light, satellite, bird, insect or camera artifact than a clip showing the same point against stable landmarks.

Preserve the observer’s viewpoint

Record where you were standing and the direction in which you were looking. A map pin, coordinates or a later map annotation can help. Note whether you were indoors or outdoors, your approximate height above the ground, and any obstruction between you and the sky. The location of the observer is different from the location of the object; a recording normally cannot supply the latter by itself.

Use landmarks without claiming a measurement

Landmarks make a direction easier to describe, but they do not automatically provide scale. Saying “the light passed left of the water tower” is an observation. Saying “it was 20 metres from the tower” requires reliable distance information that an ordinary phone clip usually does not contain.

Camera choices that preserve evidence

Resolution and field of view

Use the highest practical resolution that your device can sustain without making the recording unusably short or unstable. AARO identifies higher-resolution footage as potentially useful. When an object is close enough to remain trackable, a smaller field of view can place more pixels on it. That trade-off should be made only after a wider contextual view is secured.

Do not treat digital zoom, sharpening or an enlarged preview as new information. Digital processing can make edges look more definite while adding patterns that were not present in the captured light. Keep the camera’s original file so any enhancement can be compared with the unaltered frame.

Exposure, focus and automatic processing

Phones continuously adjust focus, exposure, white balance and stabilization. A bright point against a dark sky may be overexposed, clipped or surrounded by blooming. A dark object may disappear when the sky sets the exposure. These effects can change during a pan. If the device allows exposure or focus locking, use it only if you can do so without losing the object, and record that choice in your notes.

Do not assume that a mode labeled “night,” “cinematic,” “enhanced,” “stabilized” or “high resolution” produces a more faithful record. Such modes may combine frames, alter timing or apply noise reduction. The important practice is to preserve the camera’s original output and document the mode used, not to select a particular consumer setting.

Audio and narration

Keep the microphone on when it is safe and useful. Ambient sound can preserve the timing of a passing aircraft, wind, traffic or another witness’s reaction. Narrate observable facts rather than theories: “It is moving from my right to my left,” “the light dimmed,” or “I changed to the telephoto camera.” Avoid statements such as “it is definitely a spacecraft.” If you later form an interpretation, place it in a separate note instead of rewriting the contemporaneous observation.

Ask for independent recordings

When other witnesses are present, ask them to record from where they are standing rather than having everyone crowd around one phone. Different positions can show whether apparent motion belongs to the object or to a moving camera. Keep each person’s original file and note the approximate time, location and viewing direction for each recording.

NASA’s Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Independent Study Team Final Report, published September 14, 2023, explains that near-simultaneous smartphone observations can be collated. Their metadata may help analysts investigate an object’s possible location and estimate velocity or size. Those are potential analytical uses, not measurements that every group of phone recordings will produce. Clocks, positions, lens characteristics and the object’s distance all affect whether a comparison is meaningful.

What to write down while the event is fresh

Device metadata may be incomplete or altered when a file is copied, exported or posted. Make a separate contemporaneous note, either on paper or in a digital note, and keep it with the original file.

  • Date and time: include the time zone and, if known, the clock or network source used by the device.
  • Start, end and duration: record when you first noticed the object, when recording began, when it left view and when you stopped.
  • Observer location: save a map pin or coordinates and describe the viewing direction, such as compass bearing or a fixed landmark.
  • Weather and visibility: note cloud cover, haze, rain, wind, brightness of the sky and nearby artificial lights.
  • Device and camera: identify the make and model, the camera or sensor used, recording mode, resolution, frame rate if displayed, and any lens or zoom changes.
  • Direct observations: describe shape, colour, brightness, apparent changes, sound and movement without assigning an identity.
  • Other witnesses: list who was present, where each person stood and whether they made an independent recording.
  • Files created: note the original filename, file type and any later copy, trim, conversion or upload.

NASA identifies sensor type, manufacturer, noise characteristics, acquisition time, sensitivity, storage characteristics, sensor location and exposure as useful metadata. You may not be able to retrieve every item from a phone, but recording which details are available prevents a later description from being mistaken for a camera measurement.

Protect the original file

Make a preservation copy before sharing

Keep the first image or video produced by the device in a separate location. Do not trim, stabilize, sharpen, add captions, change speed, convert formats or compress that only copy. Make a working duplicate for ordinary sharing and label it as an edited or exported version.

AARO cautions that compression introduces artifacts and says uncompressed data accompanied by camera specifications is more useful. A social-media download is therefore not an adequate substitute for the camera’s original file. Preserve any sidecar metadata file that travels separately from the image or video, and retain the original folder structure when practical.

Label derivatives clearly

Use filenames or notes that distinguish the original from a derivative, for example by recording the creation date, device and edit performed. Keep a written record of who made each copy and when. If you apply stabilization or enlargement for viewing, do not present the result without also retaining the unprocessed version for comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not overwrite metadata accidentally

Messaging apps, cloud galleries, editing programs and screen recordings can remove GPS coordinates, timestamps, exposure information or camera identifiers. Exporting a clip may also change its frame rate or duration. Before sending a file through a service, check whether it creates a transformed copy and keep the source file untouched.

Wide context, tight detail and multiple viewpoints

Choice What it can add Important limitation Practical approach
Wide contextual view Surroundings, fixed landmarks, horizon and camera movement The object may occupy few pixels Start here or preserve a continuous wide segment before changing framing
Tighter, higher-resolution view More visible detail when the object is close and remains in frame Does not establish distance, size or identity by itself Use only after context is secured; document zoom or lens changes
One recording A time-ordered record from one viewpoint Camera motion and perspective remain difficult to separate from object motion Preserve the complete original and detailed observation notes
Independent near-simultaneous recordings Different viewpoints and metadata that may support later comparison Different clocks, positions and camera characteristics can prevent reliable triangulation Have witnesses record separately and retain each original with its location and time

The useful choice depends on what is happening. A tight frame is not inherently better than a wide one; it answers a different question. Context helps establish geometry and motion, while detail may help describe the recorded light or shape.

What a phone recording can and cannot establish

A phone records light reaching a sensor. The result depends on lens design, exposure, focus, movement, stabilization, compression and atmospheric conditions. NASA notes that many UAP observations are coincidental and are made with instruments not designed or calibrated to constrain an object’s movement. Associated sensor and acquisition metadata are often absent.

Identity

A clip may document an unidentified appearance, but it does not prove that the object is a spacecraft, drone, aircraft, balloon, astronomical object or anything else. Identification requires comparison with reliable contextual information and, in some cases, additional sensors or records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distance and size

Without a known distance or a second calibrated viewpoint, apparent size in a frame is not physical size. A small nearby object and a large distant object can occupy similar portions of an image. A landmark in the frame supplies context, not an automatic scale measurement.

Speed and trajectory

Apparent movement in a handheld clip combines object motion, camera movement, perspective and changing exposure. Reliable speed requires distance, timing, field of view and sensor information. Avoid converting a point’s movement across the screen into kilometres per hour unless those variables are independently established.

Shape and colour

Defocus, blooming, rolling-shutter effects, compression and automatic white balance can alter the apparent outline and colour of a light. Describe what the file shows at its original resolution and identify any processing used for a larger display.

How to review your own footage

  1. Secure the originals first. Copy the image or video and associated metadata before opening it in an editor or uploading it.
  2. Watch the complete file. Note what appears before and after the most interesting moment, including camera movement, refocusing and exposure changes.
  3. Check the file properties. Record duration, dimensions, frame rate, creation time and camera information when available. Treat displayed times as device data, not automatically as a verified event time.
  4. Compare unprocessed and derivative versions. If you enlarge, stabilize or adjust contrast, keep the original visible for frame-by-frame comparison.
  5. Separate observation from interpretation. Make one list of visible or audible events and a separate list of possible explanations. Do not turn a hypothesis into a caption that appears to describe the file.
  6. Check for ordinary scene effects. Look for reflections through glass, insects near the lens, birds, aircraft lights, satellites, bright planets, clouds, camera shake and nearby lights before drawing a stronger conclusion.

This review process does not make a recording conclusive. It makes the limits and provenance of the file clearer to anyone who later examines it.

Reporting: choose the appropriate route

Pilot reports and the FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration says it documents pilot reports made to air traffic control. It may share reports with the UAP Task Force when supporting information, such as radar data, corroborates a report. This describes the FAA’s handling of aviation reports; it is not a general civilian upload service.

AARO’s official form

AARO’s “Submit a Report” page is for current or former U.S. government employees, service members or contractors who have firsthand knowledge of government UAP programs or activities. The page says not to submit general sightings or information outside what the form requests. An ordinary civilian witness should not use that form as a general UFO-sighting portal.

Other civilian reporting

The official material cited here does not establish one universal reporting destination for civilians in every country or jurisdiction. Verify current local directions before sending personal information or an original file to an organization. If you contact an authority, provide a copy rather than surrendering the only original, and state exactly what you observed, when and where you observed it, and what file version you are sending.

How federal records guidance relates to personal files

The National Archives and Records Administration’s guidance, updated May 8, 2024, concerns federal agencies managing records for the UAP Records Collection. It is not a file-transfer requirement for civilian witnesses. Its examples nevertheless show why a record benefits from a title, creation date, originator, location, file type and running time. You can apply those descriptive ideas in your own notes without implying that you are using a federal records format.

Common mistakes and how to recover

Only a compressed social-media copy remains

Save that copy, record where it came from and do not describe it as the camera original. Ask whether the device still contains the source file, an automatic cloud backup or a removable-card copy. If none exists, disclose the compression and avoid claims that depend on fine detail.

The clip was cropped or edited

Keep the edited version, document every change and search for an unedited copy in the camera roll, backup or messaging history. Do not pass off a cropped frame as the complete event; explain what was removed and why.

The object was lost while changing modes

Keep the segment you captured and note the interruption, new lens and approximate timing. A shorter continuous record with an honest gap is more useful than a reconstructed sequence presented as uninterrupted.

No GPS or timestamp is available

Write down the location, time-zone assumption and clock source from memory as soon as possible. Distinguish a recalled time from a device-generated timestamp. Ask other witnesses for their independent times and positions rather than filling gaps with guesses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The footage looks spectacular after enhancement

Return to the unprocessed file. Save the enhanced export separately, identify the software or adjustment, and describe the enhancement as a viewing aid rather than additional captured detail.

A compact handoff package

When you need to show the event to an analyst, journalist, authority or another witness, assemble a package that keeps provenance visible:

  • the untouched original image or video;
  • any sidecar metadata and the device’s camera specifications;
  • a clearly labeled derivative, if an edited copy helps someone view it;
  • your time, time-zone, location and viewing-direction notes;
  • weather, visibility, nearby lights and fixed-landmark descriptions;
  • the device, camera, mode, zoom changes and exposure or focus choices;
  • a factual account of what you directly saw and heard;
  • names or identifiers for other witnesses and links between their independent files.

Keep a private copy of the package and share only the personal information necessary for the recipient’s stated purpose.

The practical standard for a useful UFO recording

The strongest personal record is not necessarily the most dramatic close-up. It is the file that preserves the original sensor data, shows enough surroundings to establish the viewpoint, carries reliable timing and location notes, and makes clear which statements are observations and which are interpretations. Independent recordings can add perspective, but ordinary phone footage still may not contain enough information for systematic analysis.
