Use a plain, matte background, soft even light, and a steady camera to show a collectible statue clearly and honestly. Photograph the whole piece from multiple sides, then add close-ups of its details, markings, and any damage. Include a ruler or tape measure for scale, and put the statue’s dimensions in the listing text.
Prepare the setup before moving the statue
First secure the surface where the statue will sit and the background behind it. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2019 art object care and handling guidance recommends securing both before positioning an object. It also advises moving the camera rather than the object when practical, so you can find the right angle while minimizing handling.
Use a stable surface and avoid makeshift supports if the statue could wobble or fall. If it is heavy, fragile, or difficult to position safely, ask someone experienced with handling it for help. Set up the background and lighting before placing the statue so you do not have to move it repeatedly.

Choose a background that separates the statue from the scene
A plain, smooth, non-reflective background keeps attention on the object. The Field Museum recommends a neutral solid color and identifies gray as a preferred option, but gray is a starting point—not a universal rule. Choose a matte paper or fabric color that makes the statue’s outline and surface details easy to see. For example, a dark statue may stand out better against a light background, while a pale statue may need a darker one.

Check the entire frame for distracting objects, creases, or a background that blends into the statue. A costly or branded backdrop is not necessary; a clean, plain surface can work.
Light the statue to reveal its shape and finish
Aim for even light that shows the statue’s form without creating deep distracting shadows or washed-out highlights. Indirect daylight can work. Move the light or statue only when safe, and adjust the light’s distance or level if the image looks too dark or reflective areas lose detail.
For shiny, glazed, or reflective finishes
Hard light can create bright spots that obscure the finish. The Field Museum suggests placing thin fabric, such as a white T-shirt, in front of a light source to diffuse it. Keep fabric safely away from anything hot. Take a test photo and adjust the diffusion until the surface detail remains visible.

For shadows on one side
A clean white card can reflect some light into the shadow side. Move it gradually and check the result; the goal is to reveal detail without flattening the statue’s shape.
Stabilize the camera and check focus
A phone or camera stand or tripod can reduce movement and help keep framing consistent. If you do not have one, use a stable surface to support the camera. Select the device’s highest resolution setting, focus carefully, and inspect the image after taking it rather than assuming the screen preview was sharp.
When photographing small details, keep the lens parallel to the surface being recorded where possible. This reduces perspective distortion and helps the detail look more faithful. Avoid relying on an extreme angle to make the statue look larger or more dramatic than it is.

Photograph the full statue, its details, and its condition
A single front view rarely communicates the whole object. Take a clear overall image, then add views that help a buyer understand its shape and condition:
- Front, back, and both sides.
- Top and bottom views, if you can obtain them safely.
- Close-ups of distinctive features, signatures, labels, or markings.
- Close-ups of chips, cracks, scratches, repairs, or other condition issues.
For a large statue, include full-object views as well as closer images of sections. If handling it to get a view would be risky, move the camera around the stationary statue instead. Show damage plainly; do not let framing or lighting conceal a flaw a buyer would reasonably want to see.
Show scale and add dimensions to the listing
A ruler or tape measure in a photograph gives viewers a visual reference. Place it beside the statue without covering important features, and keep it in the same plane as the part being measured when practical. Also write the dimensions in the listing text; a scale reference in a photo complements, rather than replaces, written measurements.

Review the images before uploading
Check the photographs at a size where you can inspect detail. Confirm that:
- The statue is sharp, especially in the main overall views and condition close-ups.
- The color and finish look plausible rather than strongly tinted or washed out.
- The silhouette is distinct from the background.
- Highlights and shadows do not hide important surface details.
- The set includes useful views of the object and clear images of any damage.
