You can check a Dell warranty online with the device’s Service Tag, Express Service Code, or, in some cases, Dell’s automatic detection tool. The result normally shows the coverage type, start date, end date, and description of the service.
A Dell Service Tag is usually a seven-character code. It is not the same as a model number, although Dell Support can also search by model when you do not have the tag.
How to check a Dell warranty online
The main route is Dell Support:
- Open Dell.com/Support.
- Under Identify your product or search support, enter the Dell Service Tag, Express Service Code, or model.
- Click Search.
- On the product page, open the warranty or services section. Depending on the regional Dell page, the button may be labelled View Warranty Details or Review Services.
The warranty information should include:
- Warranty or service start date
- Warranty or service end date
- Coverage type, such as Basic Support or a premium support plan
- A description of what the coverage includes
The same product page also provides drivers, manuals, specifications, and support history.
Warranty check using Dell’s Support Services menu
Dell also documents this path:
- Go to Dell.com/Support.
- Select Support.
- Choose Support Services & Warranty.
- Enter the Service Tag.
- Open the identified product’s information page.
- Select Review Services.
Dell’s warranty page may instead expose links named Check Warranty Status or Check Warranty Expiration. The labels vary by country and support flow, but they lead to the same type of warranty information.

Can Dell detect the Service Tag automatically?
Yes. Dell’s warranty flow can offer an automated Service Tag detection option. This is useful when you are checking the warranty from the Dell computer itself and do not want to read the label.
Use Dell’s Check Warranty Status or Check Warranty Expiration page and choose the automatic detection option if it appears. The browser or Dell support tool may ask for permission to identify the system. If detection fails, enter the tag manually or use the Express Service Code.
Where to find a Dell Service Tag
The label location depends on the product.
| Device | Usual location |
|---|---|
| Laptop | Bottom cover. On some XPS and Precision models, it is beneath the system badge. |
| Desktop tower | Back of the tower; some models have a black label with white text on top. |
| Monitor or all-in-one PC | Back of the device. |
| Tablet | Back panel or bezel, depending on the model. |
| Printer | Back of the printer; an all-in-one model may also have it beneath the scanner. |
| Server | Front pull-out information tag, sometimes called a luggage tag or pull tab. |
| Networking device | Front pull-out tab, back, or bottom sticker. |
Some accessories and peripherals do not have a Service Tag. Enterprise products may use other identifiers, including an Enterprise Service Tag, mini-Enterprise Service Tag, Product Serial Number Tag (PSNT), software ID (SWID), or serial number.
Find the Service Tag in Windows PowerShell
For a Dell laptop, desktop, or Windows tablet, you can retrieve the tag from the BIOS information without turning the computer over.
- Press the Windows key and type PowerShell.
- Select Windows PowerShell.
- Run this command:
GWMI -Class Win32_Bios | select SerialNumber
The value returned beside SerialNumber is the Service Tag. Copy it into Dell’s warranty checker.

Older instructions often use:
wmic bios get serialnumber
That advice is outdated. Microsoft has deprecated the WMIC command-line tool, and Dell’s current documented method uses PowerShell instead.
Find the Express Service Code
The Express Service Code is the numeric version of the Service Tag. If you already know the Service Tag:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Search for the product on Dell Support.
- On the identified product page, find the Service Tag.
- Click the More dropdown beside it.
- Read the Express Service Code in the expanded information.
You can use either identifier in Dell’s support and warranty tools.
What to do when Dell rejects the Service Tag
Check the characters carefully. The most common transcription mistakes are:
- O and 0
- Lowercase l and the number 1
- B and 8
Also check that you copied the tag from the computer rather than from a separate dock, monitor, or replacement part. If the Service Tag still is not accepted, try the Express Service Code.

A missing or damaged label does not necessarily prevent identification. Servers, storage systems, and networking equipment may expose the identifier in a web interface, management console, system report, or command line. The exact command depends on the product, so use that device’s Dell user guide rather than applying a laptop command to an enterprise system.

For a list of client computers, Dell provides a separate command-line utility called Dell Command | Warranty. It is intended to retrieve warranty data for systems identified by Service Tag.
To display its help:
DellWarranty-CLI.exe /H
The utility requires an input source. For a CSV file containing Service Tags, use:
DellWarranty-CLI.exe /I=C:FileName.csv
By default, output is written below:
%ProgramData%DellWarranty
The result has a timestamped name such as WarrantyOutput_....csv. Invalid Service Tags produce a timestamped warranty-error output file, which helps separate bad entries from successful results.
Dell’s available Dell Command | Warranty User’s Guide is dated October 2020 and documents older operating systems, including Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10, plus Windows Server 2012 through 2019. Treat it as legacy utility documentation, not as a current Windows 11 support statement. For a small number of computers, the Dell Support website is usually simpler.

Warranty problems that require extra steps
Used or second-hand Dell computer
The warranty record may still be associated with the original registered owner. Dell’s ownership-transfer process can be needed for a used device. Dell requires information about both the current registered owner and the new owner.
Computer moved to another country
A warranty or ownership transfer may be necessary after moving the device to another country or region. Coverage and available support can depend on the destination market.
Warranty renewal is unavailable
Warranty renewal is not offered in every country. If the computer was purchased through a reseller, Dell may direct you back to that reseller for renewal.
Out-of-warranty support
Dell’s online out-of-warranty offers are limited to consumer and commercial computer customers in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and China. They do not apply to server or storage systems.

A Service Tag remains valid for the life of the device and is linked to a Dell account, but it does not itself contain personal information. Dell still advises customers not to post the tag publicly. Share it directly with Dell Support or an authorized technician when necessary.

FAQ
How do I check my Dell warranty without a Service Tag?
Open Dell Support and use the automatic Service Tag detection option if it is offered. You can also search by the Dell model, although the Service Tag gives the most precise warranty result.
Is a Dell Service Tag the same as a serial number?
For most Dell laptops and desktops, the seven-character Service Tag is the identifier used for support and warranty lookup. Enterprise and data-protection products may use different identifiers, such as a PSNT, Enterprise Service Tag, SWID, or product serial number.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What command shows the Dell Service Tag?
In Windows PowerShell, run GWMI -Class Win32_Bios | select SerialNumber. The returned SerialNumber is the Service Tag. The older wmic bios get serialnumber command is no longer Dell’s current documented method.
Why does Dell say my Service Tag is invalid?
Recheck characters that are easy to confuse, especially O/0, lowercase l/1, and B/8. If the tag is correct, try the numeric Express Service Code or contact Dell Support with the product details.
Can I check the warranty for a Dell monitor?
Yes, if the monitor has a Service Tag. The tag is normally on the back. Some accessories and peripherals do not have Service Tags and may require a model, serial number, or purchase documentation instead.
Can I check several Dell warranties at once?
Yes. Dell Command | Warranty can read a CSV of Service Tags with DellWarranty-CLI.exe /I=C:FileName.csv. Its available guide is legacy documentation, so verify compatibility before deploying it in a current Windows environment.

The Bottom Line
For one Dell laptop, desktop, monitor, or other tagged device, use Dell.com/Support, enter the Service Tag or Express Service Code, and open View Warranty Details or Review Services. If the label is inaccessible, retrieve the tag with PowerShell or use Dell’s automatic detection tool. For multiple client systems, Dell Command | Warranty can process a CSV, but its documentation is older and should not be treated as current Windows 11 guidance.
