A Pendulum Summon lets you Special Summon multiple eligible monsters at once by placing Pendulum Monster Cards in both Pendulum Zones and using their Pendulum Scales to set a Level range. You can summon eligible monsters from your hand and face-up Pendulum Monsters from your Extra Deck, but the Extra Deck monsters have a strict placement limit.
What Pendulum Monster Cards do
A Pendulum Monster Card has two roles. Played as a monster, it uses its Monster Effect and can participate in battles and other monster actions. Activated in a Pendulum Zone as a Spell Card, it uses its Pendulum Effect and provides a Pendulum Scale. Konami describes them as cards that “blur the line between Monsters and Spells!” in its Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Beginner’s Guide.
The two Pendulum Zones are the spaces used to establish a pair of Scales. You need one Pendulum Monster Card in each zone before you can declare a Pendulum Summon.
How to Pendulum Summon
- During your Main Phase, activate a Pendulum Monster Card in each Pendulum Zone. Each card is treated as a Spell Card while it is there.
- Read the two Pendulum Scales. The values define the eligible Level interval; monsters exactly equal to either Scale are excluded.
- Declare a Pendulum Summon once per turn. Special Summon any number of eligible monsters you choose from your hand, along with eligible face-up Pendulum Monsters in your Extra Deck.
- Place Extra Deck Pendulum Monsters in a legal zone. Each must go to the Extra Monster Zone or a Main Monster Zone a Link Monster points to.
For example, Scales 1 and 8 allow Levels 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Level 1 and Level 8 monsters are not between those Scales, so they cannot be summoned by that Pendulum Summon. The rulebook sets out this range-based procedure in its official rulebook.

Where Pendulum Monsters go when they leave the field
If a Pendulum Monster Card on the field would be sent to the Graveyard, it is placed face-up in the Extra Deck instead. That face-up card can potentially be Pendulum Summoned later if its Level fits the current Scales and you have a legal zone for it. This rule is specifically about Pendulum Monster Cards on the field that would be sent to the Graveyard; it does not mean every Pendulum Monster always goes to the Extra Deck.
The Extra Deck placement rule still applies
A Pendulum Monster summoned from the Extra Deck cannot be placed in any available Main Monster Zone at will. It must be summoned to the Extra Monster Zone or to a Main Monster Zone that a Link Monster points to. Konami’s beginner guide states this placement rule directly.

This restriction remains in place after Konami’s 2021 rules update. That update allowed Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Monsters to be summoned from the Extra Deck to Main Monster Zones without needing a Link Monster arrow; it did not remove the Extra Deck zone restriction for Pendulum Monsters or Link Monsters. Check card text for exceptions and restrictions
The procedure above is the baseline, but individual card effects can change Scales, limit which monsters may be Pendulum Summoned, or affect face-up Pendulum Monsters in the Extra Deck. Read the full text of the cards involved and consult the current official rules when resolving a specific interaction.
